Michaeli Bakery is nothing short of five-stars-delicious. Curious about this upper eastside Israeli bakery I instructed my husband to surprise me. He came home with two decadent croissants -- I think they're about $6 each -- and another goody. (He doesn't recall what he chose!) Apparently Michaeli is known for its chocolate babka -- remember that episode on Seinfeld? -- so that without doubt is on my list to try.

I've been here once on a weekend, I came early in the morning and there was only one other family. They had a lot of options so I picked 3. I believe one was just a regular croissant, which was good. The other two I chose was their specialty only offered on the weekends and a mushroom pastry. These two were not my favorite. This bakery has very specific flavor profiles that I think are personally not for me, but the pastry itself is really good, the staff is lovely, the place is clean and efficient. However, there's nowhere to sit down. I think overall if you liked the flavor profile they offer this would be a five out of five however, I didn't really like anything I had and I probably won't be back.

Michaeli Bakery is a delightful neighborhood spot with fresh, high-quality baked goods. The breads and pastries are flavorful and well-crafted, making it perfect for a quick breakfast or a coffee break.

After spending decades at beloved babka institutions, Lechamim Bakery in Tel Aviv and Breads Bakery in NYC, pastry chef Adir Michaeli struck out on his own to open his first Michaeli Bakery on the Lower East Side in 2019. A few years later, he opened an Upper East Side location as well. To no one's surprise, Michaeli's babkas are world class, the buttery laminated layers so saturated with chocolate that it's unclear at times whether you're eating chocolate babka or babka chocolate. But as famous as the babkas are, the under-the-radar star of the show is the spicy cheese stick. If you like cheese and savory laminated pastries, Michaeli's spicy cheese stick will make you swoon with delight. All the fat content from the toasty cheese and fragrant butter insulates the laminated layers so that even near the end of the day or on humid days, the pastry remains remarkably fresh and crisp. It's almost like eating frico -- but even better. For similar reasons (read: high fat content), bourekas are also worth seeking out. Crisp, well-laminated pastry curls around a moderate amount of filling ranging from the classic feta, potato, spinach or mushroom to more new-fangled "pizza" (filled with tomato sauce and herbs... and perhaps cheese, though we could not detect it). We are partial to the potato version -- because what could be better than carb on carb goodness? Rugelach are less to our taste. We love that the fillings are mostly traditional and not overly sweet (there's poppy, apple, cinnamon, and chocolate among other things). But my family prefers a lighter, crispier style of rugelach with a higher filling to pastry ratio. Michaeli's rugelach are of the softer, breadier style, almost like Italian cornetti. In fact, some of the rugelach are rolled to resemble cornetti. If you are in NYC and have only one chance to try babka, seek out Michaeli or Breads Bakery. (They have very similar products as one might surmise.) While you're at it, take home a spicy cheese straw or two... or a dozen. They're not NYC icons yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they become that someday.

Food/drinks: lovee this bakery!! I've tried several of their pastries & really love the feta cheese pastry, babka (very chocolatey), & croissant!! Atmosphere: very cute, limited high chair seating Service: super friendly every time :) Price: $$ worth it!

    Pistachio Sufganiya

I've been to Michaeli Bakery many times and although I already wrote a review, I had to write another because today I tried a menu item that really blew me away: the pistachio sufganiyot. When I arrived these beauties had just arrived in the case and the person behind the counter convinced me that I had to try one. The dough was tender without too much give, the filling was super creamy and tasted like vanilla and pistachio (and maybe a little like almond?) and the toppings were dainty- freeze dried raspberries and chopped pistachios. The shell tasted like pistachio white chocolate. I would definitely order this again. My other favorites are the chocolate rugelach and the feta boureka.

Made it far enough east that I got to try this place. It was definitely worth it. Now I know why my coworkers rave about it and those I brought treats back for loved it too! I tried 2 of their top 5, the pistachio cherry croissant and the rocher cookie, and the Nutella cookie. I bought the Nutella cookie mainly because it's a gluten free option. I'm not a huge Nutella fan yet I really enjoyed this cookie. I also would normally start away from cherry flavored sweets but I couldn't resist the pistachio cherry croissant. There wasn't a lot of cherry so it too was perfect! The bakery is very long and narrow but they do have some stools along the window if you wanted to sit there.

Incredible bakery in the UES! I tried the pistachio cherry croissant and I haven't been able to stop thinking of it all day! I can't wait to try more of their items soon - the babka looks incredible.

I got the halva and chocolate rugalach, and both were good although I wish the halva one had more halva in it. I had my eye on the halva croissant but they weren't making it today (Sunday) for whatever reason. I'll have to come back.

Croissants, burekas, and rugelach are amazing. And if that wasn't enough, their coffee is excellent as well.

The Mango and Pistachio looked so realistic and mirrored the flavors perfectly. I love the size of their cakes which are perfect to share with a group of 4. I indulged in their Black Sesame Mochi Cake and Blueberry Chiffon Cake which both have the fluffiest sponge cake base, a fluffy vibrant cream, and fresh ingredients and fruit. Give their drinks a try too. I enjoy their matcha here! The Traffic Lights is a strawberry matcha with a mango cream top. Finally decided to try this place after walking by it for years. I refused to try this in the past,…read morebecause I didn't like how many items they put on display. It felt like items weren't made with care and mass produced at a factory or something. I went 10 minutes before they closed and there was still 10+ of each dessert. I'm not convinced that they will dispose of them. Even if they do, it means they didn't do a good job in forecasting demand especially after being in business for multiple years. I ordered mango and yuzu. Both were too sweet and had one dimensional flavor and textures, not refreshing per their stated flavors. Even if their appearances take effort, they don't look pretty enough for me to forgive what goes in my mouth. I'm used to having patisseries with many layers and elements. Mango's sponge probably only took up 20% of the bottom, because I barely had bites of it. Most of my bites didn't have any. I didn't like how liquid the filling was. It didn't exactly ooze out but just melted into a puddle in my mouth. Yuzu looks pretty with the pink and yellow glaze, but it didn't go with the realistic fruit theme. I chose it for the flavor combination which is strawberry, yuzu, and guava. This was slightly better in terms of flavor variety in the mouth. The flower on top had a weird off putting flavor. The bottom crispy rice apparently is supposed to be chocolate but it came out plain. It was tasteless anyway, so not effective in terms of flavor or texture.

I had to run to work after an appointment so I ordered for takeout. The person taking my order was friendly. I opted for the Lumberjack and a black cold brew. I received the drink very quickly, with a short wait for the sandwich. While waiting, one member of the staff stocking up supplies on the side started chatting with me and then she offered to check up on my sandwich. She came out with it shortly thereafter. She was very friendly and helpful. The sandwich held up well during my 15-minute commute to the office. It is a really indulgent sandwich, with each bite revealing the sweetness and butteriness of the maple crueller, the saltiness of the thick cut bacon, and the savoriness of the cheese and the eggs as the yolks popped. I sipped the cold brew in between bites to cut the richness. It was a very satisfying meal. The Lumberjack is not something I would recommend you eat every day, but it's good as an occasional treat. The place was bustling with people, and everyone seemed happy and excited -- from the customers to the team behind the counter and the baristas.
