3 item plate with 1/2 noodle 1/2 rice, spicy pork, and honey pork
    Andrew W.

Yeah I don't quite understand the hate, Orient Express is a perfectly serviceable, albeit below-average, Chinese fast-food restaurant. It's one of the few Panda Express-style in the area, where you don't have to call in your order, you can instantly get in line and get your food from the hot pans. Honestly, the price is why I give this place an acceptable store. For $9.99 for a 3 item (technically 2 items + side) plate, that's a lot cheaper than a lot of other places in the area. I paid $11 after tax. Do note that this place is cash only, but I'm willing to pull out the cash to get a lower price (esp compared to $15 for a similar size plate at Mr. Chau's). The sides were actually restaurant quality! The chow mein had nice and al dente noodles with some wok hei, and the fried rice was tasty and had chunks of chicken in it. It tasted about as good as something you could get a la carte at a chinese takeout restuarant. The entrees on the other hand were slightly below average. The honey pork was decent, they bread and fry their pork pieces like many other Chinese takeout restaurants (shoutout to Evergreen Panda), but the sauce was just whatever. It reminded me a bit of this Shanghainese dish my mom makes "sugar vinegar spareribs", but a worse version. I think overall, the meat and entree options are better at places like Mr. Chau's or Panda Express. As for the ambiance of the venue, I can see why other people call this place "dirty". In my opinion, it was alright, just a bit messy, but I did find it annoying when one of the workers decided to start mopping while I was eating. Looking back, Orient Express is a serviceable Chinese fast-food spot, especially if you're on a budget or if you're in a rush. The price is quite agreeable, but the quality is hit-or-miss. I'd still take this over Mr. Chau's cause I was actually able to finish my food.

It was inevitable, price has increased. 2 item combo is 10.99 and 3 items is 11.99 I come from time to time and even though the price has gone up, this is still the spot for my American Chinese food fix in this area.

Something about old and dingy hole in the wall restaurants that I really enjoy. Place is a budget friendly Chinese take out restaurant that doesn't skimp on the portion. Sure it isn't amazing food but the food is good and the people that work here are very sweet and have been there forever. I will continue to support this Ma and Pap joint as long as they're business.

IMHO We were searching for another Chinese take-out place that offers party trays, after our favorite closed. We've lived on the eastside for over 40 years but had never been to Orient Express, which has been here for 30 plus years. It was a tad dark when we first walked in, and the lady behind the counter seemed slightly startled when she saw us. We asked her a few questions about party trays and if there was a paper menu to hand out. No paper menus, unfortunately. She showed us the two sized trays available but didn't tell us any prices. We decided to order a lunch box of two items and choice of chow Mein, or fried rice for $9.99 plus tax. Our food choices were the chow mein, garlic chicken w/ veggies, and Peking spareribs. They give generous portions, and I weighed the box when I got home. It weighed a whopping 2 lb. 5 oz.!!! I only wish they had a larger menu choice for their party trays. They don't offer my favorites of salt & pepper chicken, or salt & pepper pork, crispy fish, etc. Will we return? Sure. The price is right for quantity portion. (Cash only.)

The lady that serves the food at this place is the nicest person you would ever meet. I been going here for many years and food never disappoints. The one little inconvenience is that you have to pay with cash, but it's seriously not a big deal and the person serve a lot of food for a great price.

That's unusual for my girls and I was so happy they ate! I put away the dumplings & green beans. There were plenty leftovers for the next day lunch. The food was a touch salty. However, not enough to be deterred from going back. Small and yet spacious place. The 4 stars is simply because my go to dumpling place cannot be beat. Altho I'd rather eat here for the wonderful servers & ambiance compared to dingy Dumpling Capitol. We were stuffed and not able to indulge in the dessert dumplings. The ube & chocolate combo sounds fantastic. I will make it a point to save room the next time we hit up San Pedro square and sap center!

The name does not live up to the hype because they were not serious about customer satisfaction…read morefrom my experience. If you're going to be paying $60-$70 for two people, you would at least expect your food not to be burnt and the staff not be rude! I have been looking forward to going to this place for two years, it was a birthday dinner and I was so disappointed by my experience. I understand that it's downtown San Jose and we came in the evening, so maybe that's just how closing staff is. First off when we were seated, I asked to be moved to a more comfortable's table because the chairs were really uncomfortable for me. The staff seemed irritated and said "I guess" which was the first red flag because it's nerve-racking enough to ask for a special request and to be met with an unprofessional answer like that was disheartening. Secondly, two orders of dumplings came out burnt, which was seriously disappointing. We could barely eat them. We didn't end up finishing them. I brought this up to staff. He told me they weren't burnt and that's just how they are. I know the difference between burnt and browned and these were definitely burnt hard on the bottom and inedible. He begrudgingly told me well "I'm sorry but you'd still would have to pay for another order". I don't think that's fair at all so I said "it's fine were ok" I don't wanna give this company any more of my money anyway if this is how they treat their customers. Lastly, once we were done with our food and paid the check, the man came back to our table and asked us if there was anything he could do for us and how if we enjoyed our meal this felt like a slap in the face after everything I've already asked of him that he refused and denied and being met with a disingenuous offer just felt petty. All in all, I wouldn't go here if you're looking for food that is not burnt Service that is helpful and hospitable. Andexperience that is anything above fast casual dining.

Modernized china food takeout restaurant and I'm referring to the look from outside and inside the food itself was 10/10 authentic. The food is amazing we got the Salt and pepper wings - Nic big pieces of chicken wings perfectly fried and seasoned 5/5 Chicken fried rice - nice smoky flavorful great taste 5/5 Chicken chow mein - Nice thin noodles tossed with vegetables. I did enjoy it but not my absolute favorite I feel like it was missing a bit more soy sauce for my liking but it was good so can't complain too much 4/5 Orange chicken - Saucy , Crispy , Flavorful pieces of chicken tossed in orange peel sauce my favorite 5/5 beef in hoisin sauce - slices of thin beef tossed in a hosin based sauce with sautéed vegetables while again not my first choice (I had my daughter with me so no spice on food was mandatory) it was good but lacked some type of flavor for my liking but it wasn't bad if I wasn't into spice I could see myself going for this dish 3.5/5 Overall I would definitely come back and will be back to try different dishes for my first time here I was really impressed! No complaints whatsoever and shoutout the staff for the service very helpful welcoming and attentive even with the restaurant being pretty busy

Family made a reservation and sat at just a normal table but I shortly requested a table with a Lazy Susan. Wanted to make the experience more fun for my family. Starting off we got the egg drop soup which was not super flavorful, it was really watered down. Beef and Broccoli, sesame chicken was good though. Honey Walnut shrimp was okay, didn't like the sauce on it too much. Fried rice and egg rolls were good. I would recommend

Not the same Mayflower that I went to growing up but this place did NOT disappoint…read more We were in the mood for dim sum on the way to the T&T grocery store opening and yelp brought us here. We walked in right at opening to a completely empty dining room. Instead of leaving, we browsed the menu and ordered XLB, pot stickers, jelly fish, and pea sprouts (my personal fav) so glad we didn't leave! The XLB are a nice size, with each precious dumpling cradled in its own foil wrapper for maximum soup retention. The potstickers were full of flavor, packed with protein, delicately wrapped, and had the crispiest, golden bottoms! Jelly fish was fresh and the pea sprouts were a hit! The poor owner answering the phones made sure (in all languages) to inform folks calling in that there were a different May Flower than the other place-felt terrible for her but also understood the importance of differentiating right up front. I can only imagine the number of misorders they have probably dealt with. By the time we were done, the dining room was filled with a mix of what seemed like regulars, locals, large groups of families, small groups of friends... this feels like we stumbled upon a tiny hole in the wall restaurant where everyone who has been before just knows the quality and taste they are going to be getting! Highly recommend you check this place out for a dine in or take out order!

This is one of the handful of American Chinese restaurants that stood the test of time. As is typical of these places, there was an old lady manning the counter and also acting as the server. And as is typical of these places, there was table at the end where they were prepping the fruits and veggies. It's truly remarkable how they are all similar in these ways! We got a couple of dishes and they came out at lightning speed. * Chowmein-3/5- delicious with lots of umami flavor but shockingly greasy. I mean I am used to oily noodles but this one exceeded some limits. *crispy salt and pepper eggplant-3/5- I had a stellar version of this dish at another restaurant in Sunnyvale and was stoked when I saw this on the menu here. Unfortunately it was a poor representation of the dish I loved there. The batter was too much and the dish felt heavy. The hot oil or sauce they had felt old and extremely vinegary as well, I would recommend avoiding it.
