Although business hours state that they close at 9pm, I visited after 5pm on a Tuesday and noticed that the staff had already begun packing the food into pre-made takeout boxes, which prevented me from selecting my preferred entrée options. Despite this, I was still charged the standard price. I chose a box with chow mein as my carb option; however, upon returning home, I found that the portion consisted of two-thirds white rice and only one-third chow mein, which was not what I had expected. In the future, I understand it may be best to visit earlier to have access to the full selection and ensure the order meets expectations. read more

Yeah I don't quite understand the hate, Orient Express is a perfectly serviceable, albeit below-average, Chinese fast-food restaurant. It's one of the few Panda Express-style in the area, where you don't have to call in your order, you can instantly get in line and get your food from the hot pans. Honestly, the price is why I give this place an acceptable store. For $9.99 for a 3 item (technically 2 items + side) plate, that's a lot cheaper than a lot of other places in the area. I paid $11 after tax. Do note that this place is cash only, but I'm willing to pull out the cash to get a lower price (esp compared to $15 for a similar size plate at Mr. Chau's). The sides were actually restaurant quality! The chow mein had nice and al dente noodles with some wok hei, and the fried rice was tasty and had chunks of chicken in it. It tasted about as good as something you could get a la carte at a chinese takeout restuarant. The entrees on the other hand were slightly below average. The honey pork was decent, they bread and fry their pork pieces like many other Chinese takeout restaurants (shoutout to Evergreen Panda), but the sauce was just whatever. It reminded me a bit of this Shanghainese dish my mom makes "sugar vinegar spareribs", but a worse version. I think overall, the meat and entree options are better at places like Mr. Chau's or Panda Express. As for the ambiance of the venue, I can see why other people call this place "dirty". In my opinion, it was alright, just a bit messy, but I did find it annoying when one of the workers decided to start mopping while I was eating. Looking back, Orient Express is a serviceable Chinese fast-food spot, especially if you're on a budget or if you're in a rush. The price is quite agreeable, but the quality is hit-or-miss. I'd still take this over Mr. Chau's cause I was actually able to finish my food. read more

Went at 5pm on a Monday. They seem to packing already for the day. Food is already precooked and you order the 2 or 3 item combo. Noodle was soggy. Rice was dry. Only item that was pretty good was the sweet and sour pork but it was COLD. I might go one more time during lunch. But option the safer is nearby Jade China. IMHO We were searching for another Chinese take-out place that offers party trays, after our favorite closed. We've lived on the eastside for over 40 years but had never been to Orient Express, which has been here for 30 plus years. It was a tad dark when we first walked in, and the lady behind the counter seemed slightly startled when she saw us. We asked her a few questions about party trays and if there was a paper menu to hand out. No paper menus, unfortunately. She showed us the two sized trays available but didn't tell us any prices. We decided to order a lunch box of two items and choice of chow Mein, or fried rice for $9.99 plus tax. Our food choices were the chow mein, garlic chicken w/ veggies, and Peking spareribs. They give generous portions, and I weighed the box when I got home. It weighed a whopping 2 lb. 5 oz.!!! I only wish they had a larger menu choice for their party trays. I couldn't tell what the one side was by sight or by taste. It was bland burnt deep fried breading. After much scrutiny, I deduced it was orange chicken, though the chicken component was questionable. The broccoli beef was also bland with few beef chunks and huge florets of charred broccoli. The chow mein was bland but passable. In the end, although I hate to throw out food, I ended up eating only about one third. I just couldn't make myself go on. I actually would give this place a 3.5 stars. Definitely a quick cafeteria line style place. Get in line, order what you want, pay and get what you order. Simple and fast. Potions are very generous and for $15 I got: 1 qt hot and sour soup 1 qt wonton soup Large order of chicken and broccoli 3 egg rolls Small white rice. All that enough to feed 3 of us on a chilly evening when we want soup more than food food. I also inquired about party trays. Most small is $16 for rice and noodles. Small meat or chicken trays are $29 Definitely good pricing to feed a crowd. Remember is cash only so be ready with it. And the ppl I dealt with today were very nice. That was my Orient Express experience today. $26 and some change that after one bite, went into the trash. I've seen this place a few times while going to Jewel of India next door. You look at the price, you think "Oh wow! Great deal!" Inedible food that I wouldn't even bring home to my dog for fear of getting her sick is not a great deal. My first clue should have been when I walked in and was greeted by greasy windows, and the wafting smell of feet. "OK maybe that's just an odor, maybe the food is good" I reassured myself. The counter itself is greasy. There is glass, and behind the glass is various things that sort of resemble Chinese food. My wife even said, "Hey do you want to go for Indian next door?" I should have listened to her. This is one of those times I regret not listening to my wife. Everyone got their food and we sat down. Remember that foot odor from earlier? It was in the food. The food itself did not taste fresh at all. My deep fried Mongolian beef was soggy and just plain sad. I tried one bit of everything, it was all nasty with foot flavor. "OK Family, let's politely carry our boxes outside, and throw them away" I wasn't about to get into an argument with the lady running the joint for a refund. I just knew she wouldn't. So that's what we did. We walked out, and threw it in the trash. I was not giving myself, or my family food poisoning from meat that had an "off" flavor, and smelled like feet. This is like Panda without the line. Food is fast food level GOOD, served by an older couple arguing in Mandarin; fried rice/chow mein with an entree for $7.50. Come on! For what this place is supposed to be, it's a five star. Tip: just get steamed rice and sweet and sour chicken, or orange chicken or teriyaki chicken. Meat and rice! So good. This place is one of my favorite little hole in the wall gems whenever I travel back to San Jose (I now live in Sacramento). It's nestled right in the middle of the hood, in a dingy parking lot, but the food is delish and it's super cheap. They're cash only, just FYI, but there is an ATM inside if you need it. I usually get a 3 item plate (it'll last me a whole day and maybe breakfast and lunch tomorrow!) with brocolli chicken, sesame chicken, and half rice half chow mein. Everything I've ever had from this place has been delicious. I won't lie, if you're in the mood for a nice place with a sit down and enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant sorta place, this isn't for you. They're cafeteria style, and it's not a particularly nice place. But if you're in the market for some cheap, flavorful, convenient food and nice staff, stop on by. It's a small restaurant that only has a few tables available if you want to dine in but it's okay, I usually order to-go anyways. What I love about this place is that, even though it is family owned and small they never fail to deliver good quality food for a cheap affordable price. I always order the 3meal combo. I sometimes switch from chowmein or fried rice but they also allow you to get half/half! Their honey boneless ribs and BBQ ribs is to die for! Definitely my favorite out of all of the other dishes... but hey I can't say the other dishes are not worth trying because they are also good! Second time I been here and the guy working is polite. Food looked amazing, so I got my food and started to eat as I got to dig around I couldn't help but notice there meat was cold.
