BigSpoon is a Korean restaurant on Alum Rock's/East Side's White and McKee, an area I don't go to that often. The reason why I came over here fairly recently was because I visited cousins and cousin in law that live near to give them Valkyries shirts and other shirts they'll send to the Philippines in over a month, and since they plan to be sending clothes over while telling me about the place, I gave them my Kate Martin and Kaitlyn Chen jerseys for the trouble as I needed to make room for my Veronica Burton jersey, which I wore when I met up with them, and my upcoming violet Gabby Williams one. (Go Valks!) The noteworthy parts the place has are the real good amount of banchan dishes, bibimbap and the short rib, the spicy one in particular. While I probably will not visit the place again anytime soon, at least I can keep this place in mind if I want Korean food without driving to Santa Clara. There's plenty of parking behind the spot. As you come in, the place looks simple, but it works. You have the adorable ajumma/ajumni to take your order. The stuff I ordered. I had water, banana milk and kimchi fried rice. Since I was the only one that had more than 1 drink, I told my cousins and cousin in law the banana milk, and they did bring up how on occasion, you see the drink in K-dramas. Of course, we laughed on how my parents never got into K-dramas and while I'm at it, Filipino dramas. Oh well. Oh, there's no doubt the food is good, and the place is too legit (to quit) as I did hear Korean from a different table. As I typed up, there are plenty of banchan dishes. Not Los Angeles amount of banchan dishes, but there are plenty of banchan dishes never the less. The kimchi fried rice dish may be simple, but it does give off that homey feel. Can't forget how Big actually is affordable, the big reason why my cousins and cousin in law like the place so much. The reason why the place doesn't get a perfect score. The place would have received a perfect score if, the major matter I remember here, the place has mul naengmyun (my favorite Korean dish). Originally, I wanted Japanese ramen before my cousins mentioned this place, and I was ready to pivot to having mul naengmyun, but I was told that the place doesn't carry the noodle dish. (Being a very good and logical dish to eat for at the very least half of the year in a city like here San Jose is the reason why of all of the Korean dishes, I like mul naengmyun the most.) There probably is one or two minor flaws I already forgot, but the lack of mul naengmyun is the dead on reason why I don't give the place a perfect score. On a side note, it's nice that I told the group what banana milk and mul naengmyun are, and by doing so, they learn something new regarding eating at Korean spots just in case. BigSpoon is a good spot. While it may not be as iconic as the places in Santa Clara, it is a good spot never the less. It does a good job at being a Korean spot for an area that is more so known for Mexican food. I loves Korean foods especially two items I never miss out at any Korean restaurant are Bibimbap and Galbi short ribs BBQ. They have a special lunch combo on the weekday where you can choose your choice of a sizzling plate of protein and tofu soup (protein of choice) for only $19.99 however certain proteins do have an up charge fee. What a hidden gem in the East side of San Jose! I would recommend coming early to get a table because the establishment isn't that big, and is a bit difficult to seat a group with 5 or more. Everything was Soo delicious, from the fried chicken wings ( we got half plain and half honey), to the Korean pancake, short ribs (one of the best I've ever had), and the their japchae. My friends and I have been here multiple times now and we've honestly been satisfied with all our experiences. Looks to be a very homey and comforting spot for Korean food. Food: Spicy Braised Short Rib with Cheese and Noodles: 4.7/5 We get this item every single time. It's a good alternative for Daeho. Portion size is smaller to match the pricing. For the flavor, the sauce is what makes it for me. Typically, we add cheese and noodles to it. All of the ingredients soak in the flavor and work so well together. The sauce has a nice balance of umami, spicy, and sweetness. Personal preference with the sweetness. This might lean on being overly sweet for other people, but personally, that is something I'm a fan of. For the braised meat, it is super tender and the flavor is also nicely marinaded into the meat. That combined with the cheese, sauce, and veggies tastes amazing. It includes a variety of vegetables, which I personally enjoy because it gives another component to the dish. I do get tired if I am just consistently eating meat, so I enjoy the vegetables. Texture wise, the vegetables are quite nice. Some of them are more soft, but that's perhaps from continuing to cook in the sauce. Otherwise, other ones like the carrot or broccoli have a nice bite to it. Something else that I enjoy is that they provide purple multigrain rice. The purple rice is always my personal preference and I appreciate the places that do provide this as an option. Sweet Potato & Cheese Katsu: 4.5/5 Today was actually the first time we tried this dish. It's a pork cutlet with mashed sweet potato and mozzarella. The texture of the katsu is amazing. This type of breading is really only something I see in my Korean cooking videos where they use a fluffy panko breading and double coat the meat. The result is this super crispy and airy textured coating. The meat was very tender on the inside and it didn't feel as oily like some other katsu pieces that I've tried. For the flavor, they season the meat very well. They do drizzle katsu sauce on top just to give some of that additional flavor. Something I like to do with this is dip the katsu into the braised short rib sauce. The combination is chef's kiss. Banchan (side dishes): They have a nice array of side dishes and I love the variety. Some items include kimchi, fish cakes, broccoli, seaweed salad, sweet potato, etc. The flavorings and seasonings for each one are all to my liking here. --------- Quality: Hasn't changed We have been here multiple times and their quality is very consistent, which I appreciate. Their meats are consistently tender, sauce is delightful, and they don't skimp on their portion sizes. Price: Leans on the expensive side, but worth it Depending on the item, it can be quite expensive. The price range for their food items will be from $18 to $48. Definitely the large price range, but, it's going to depend on what you get. For something like the braised short ribs, it's going to cost more since this is an item that you can share and do family style with versus an item like the sweet potato & cheese katsu, which is more of an individual plate portion. Again, it is going to depend on the item and what is ordered. Service: One person show While their service is good, one thing I would note is the wait time. There are days where this place gets quite crowded and other days where it's a smaller crowd. Again, this place is quite small, so it's usually a one person show in the front and a one person show in the back kitchen. They really do look to do their best even when they have to single-handedly wait tables, check on the customers, put together delivery orders, etc. For what it's worth, I do think that they're doing just fine at triaging. Yes, the wait might be a little longer, but it's not excessively long. The wait time is perhaps the same at other incredibly packed places. Ambiance: Quaint little restaurant The restaurant itself is quite small. There are 6 booth tables that line the sides and 2 longer tables that fill the middle of the restaurant. Seems appropriate for them though. For me, this is a nice place for when I want a quiet and cute little dinner. It's a very peaceful area and nice place for my friends and I to talk and enjoy dinner too. Interior is somewhat dim lit, but has some natural lighting from the outside. Location/Parking: Small, but enough Their location is perhaps not the best. It's located right on N White Road and near the intersection where the road meets Mckee Road. It's very homey, full of protein (chicken) and carb (porridge). Their katsu is also great portion, I would opt for the cheese only style next time. The kimchi pancake is the best I've had so far with the texture and taste. A lot of places are either too doughy or dry but this one actually has the same texture as a sweet pancake but just salty and spicy from the kimchi. I did not want to cook one weeknight. I went on Yelp, and this place seemed decent, with an overall rating of four and a half stars. When we arrived, there were dirty plates on each table. Dang, how messy! Then I felt uncomfortable and skeptical about my choice of venue for dinner. But the server sat the four of us, and I was curious. We started with the Korean side dishes/appetizers. I've never had so many. I liked most of them, especially the potatoes and the triangle-shaped ones. We ordered a Short Rib Beef Stone Bowl, Spicy Pork Stone Bowl, Kimchi Fried Rice with Beef, and a Katsu dish with cheese. Everyone enjoyed their dish! Mine was great, the ribs were sweet and juicy. I just wished there were more than 6 pieces! The egg was perfectly cooked and I love the little crunch from the rice. Now I know why this place is highly rated! The service was good, despite that only one woman was taking the order and serving the dishes. She was the only one who had to clear the tables. I wondered if she cooked, too. Oh man, give this woman a hand!!! Somebody. help her out! She is a superwoman!!! She should be at home being served while she sat on the couch. Instead, she's working herself to the bone! We came on a Sunday night at around 7pm. There was a lot of parking in the back and a quick walk to the entrance. Inside, all of the tables were full but we were able to get one without a wait. The restaurant itself was small but clean. We ordered: Garlic & Chili chicken - 5/10 average, nothing mind blowing. Soy Chicken - 5/10 same as the garlic & chili, average. Kimchi fried rice with pork belly and cheese - 8/10 very flavorful but the portion was pretty small. Spicy pork bibimbap - 7/10 average The service was only mediocre. We received 7 side dishes but other tables had 9. All of the side dishes tasted very authentic and flavorful. Probably the best side dishes I've had compared to any other Korean place so far. I didn't realize we could ask for more for no extra cost. Our waters never got refilled, nor did we get a large bottle of water like other tables. We also only got one napkin which wasn't helpful since we had chicken. We also received someone else's order until the owner came over to correct it. Luckily we didn't touch it because it looked like it was given to the correct person shortly after they took it back to the kitchen. Came here about two or three weeks ago for a week night dinner with the hubs. It's in kind of an unsuspecting location, but I think they get a fair amount of advertisement because their signage is facing the street! We came early, around 5:30 and there was just one table occupied. There was one woman there, taking orders and going back and forth to the kitchen. We also saw another woman pushing a cart to deliver orders. Other than that, not much of a bustling staff. There was also no music, just the sounds of conversation and eating. We took a seat in a booth (wooden, no cushion) and were brought water immediately. We ordered the Kalbi Jjim which was significantly cheaper than other restaurants, but I can kiiindaaaa see why. It was SO flavorful and delicious but the cheese didn't melt all the way and the broth was really thin but so good with rice. The side dishes are really yummy but their kimchi was a little stale and too acidic, but the spinach was delicious as was the fish cake. We got purple rice and the meal was overall really satisfying! I remember this place being an older Korean restaurant when I was back in high school in 2015. Looks like they have remodeled and it honestly looks amazing. It has a more modern look to it and new interior and tables. It brings back memories. Food tastes good and the owner is so nice. I hope this place can grow and attract more customers. read more

Saw that the Korean spot at this location went through a rebranding or ownership change--not sure which one but wanted to try it out. Order the bibimbap for lunch through DoorDash. It never said that the restaurant accepted it, so I decided to come in person to see if my order was received. The management/process of food was quite slow. We stood there for 20 minutes before we were even addressed. The service was not that great. Once we said we were there to pick up the food, they brought out our order quickly. I wish that things were more efficient and that the customer service was better. I think there needs to be a better understanding of how DoorDash works or if it's used at all. I shouldn't have to come in to check if it was received. As for the food, the spicy pork was tasty. I liked mixing up the ingredients. Portion was big enough for two meals for me. A container of 4 banchan came on the side. I'd recommend it. read more
