This place posts a sign claiming to be the "best sushi in Boston" so I dropped in to check it out. I was pretty disappointed to say the least. The sushi rolls were smaller than I expected and it was pretty bland. The only thing exciting about it was the little fish eggs sprinkled on the top of the rolls. It was quite pricey. I left a four-star review last time and I really liked Oppa. That is why I took friends there again, which turned out to be a wrong decision. I ordered the exact same thing as I did last time - chirashi, but the hamachi was bad. It was almost my favorite fish last time, and this time I could have easily gotten a diarrhea from it, if I did not notice that weird taste. Good food, good portion and good price. Came here on a Friday night. It's a small place and not the best layout but liked the food. Started the meal with a complimentary miso soup. Pretty standard, nothing special. We then got the sashimi appetizer. The fish was very fresh and came with 9 pieces. Next was the main courses. I got the sashimi don. It's a Korean take on the Japanese version over a bed of vegetables. Loved it! Very refreshing and tasty with the Korean sauce. My boyfriend got the Celtic maki and Flaming Maki. Both were awesome! It looks so good! Seriously though, those Big Macs in the ads look so amazing, and so does the sushi at Oppa. Sadly, if you actually buy the sushi you'll be disappointed. You're better off just eating with your eyes for free, and then when you decide to spend some money on real food you can just go elsewhere. There's so many things that I just didn't enjoy, but comparing the sushi to what a Big Mac ad is to McDonald's is the most accurate way to describe my experience. You know that feeling when the meat patty just looks so succulent and delicious in the ad, but when you actually take a bite of the real thing you have to grab a gulp of Coke because it was so dry you almost choked? That's essentially how I feel right now. This was quite possibly the worst sushi experience I've ever had. Its one thing if one or two pieces from a roll break down, but if literally every piece breaks when I look at it, its not going to be a good time. I'm not Asian in the most traditional sense, the country that my parents are from (India) just accidently slammed into mainstream Asia, but because my wife is Asian and my chopstick skills are decent. So, let's not blame that. Then there's the scallops that had the texture of mushy peas and the tempura rolls that were hardly crunchy. Look, I get it, with rolls like, "Patriots" roll and "Red Sox" roll, you're collectively making all of Boston orgasm at the sight of the respective team colors. However, some of us like our food to taste just as good, if not better, than the way it looks. This isn't an impossible feat, there's plenty of restaurants that live up to their pictures. As a regular I believe this review is overdue. I cannot give enough praise about Oppa! They are truly killing the game right now. I consider myself to be a pretty experienced sushi consumer with parents who were also once in the business and I can righteously say their quality and variety of fish, roll creativity, and service is all around top notch. Even their miso soup is superior! Get any sushi on their menu, it's definitely worth the price. Their Patriots maki is my favorite special roll, and I always get an assortment of their sashimi-the octopus is spectacular! Handrolls also amazing. I have yet to try the Korean fare on their menu but I'm also confident that it slaps since I'm pretty sure the ownership is Korean. I order mostly takeout but I've dined in with friends and its definitely a cozy, no frills place in the heart of Allston. Super fast service. Only had to wait 10-15 mins, but service gave us a free appetizer and amazing strawberry mochi for dessert which we did not expect at all! Such a pleasant surprise. The place is very small and probably not accessible because there is a set of stairs leading down to the restaurant. But this is my second time and the food is amazing! The Lion King Maki is one of my favorites, also the miso soup is included when you order the Maki specials. It was two of us and it was included. Their miso soup is delicious too! My girlfriend and and I thought we'd try this place during the Covid-19 Quarantine and we were quite disappointed. The sushi here is sub par for a restaurant that wants to set itself apart for its sushi. The eel avocado was bland and they put barely a finger nail sized portion of eel. The spicy salmon and spicy tuna were flavorless as well. The Bibimbap and Gimbap were not bad and for a decent sized portion so that is a positive. However, what really disappointed me was the shrimp tempura. It was 6, 3 inch shriveled up shrimps barely covered in batter and beyond soggy for 11 dollars. You can get way better sushi else where, and for tempura you could get a vegetable and shrimp tempura 5x as filling and tasty at Genki Ya for 50% the price. If you're craving Korean food and this was the only option, then it's an alright choice, but not a great option for sushi or anything else. read more

We were interested in finding out about this place due it's very high rating. We tried chirashi and sashimi don (hae duo bop) as well as hamachi Kama. The portion is bigger than other Japanese restaurants but the taste of those dishes are just average. Service is better than average. read more

OPPA! Great staff! Seems to be family run. The head chef is very friendly and always right behind the bar. He will greet you and bid you farewell when you leave. His English isn't great but you can tell he makes an effort! I usually get the same waitress most of the time whom I believe is his daughter. She speaks very good English. If you're coming here for lunch I highly suggest their lunch combo! It's a sweet deal at only 9-10 bucks. Overall the sushi is great. It's definitely one of the better sushi places in the BU area. My only complaint would be the seating- it's a smallish place which is quite quaint. However it fills up quick and sometimes you end up having to wait. Usually they can turn over tables quick though. Amazing sushi. Honestly one of the best food experiences I've had since moving to Boston. Soft Shell Crab- great appetizer. After seeing all the flaming sushi photos, we ordered the Flaming Bruins sushi roll and wow, so many delicious flavors at once! The service was questionable at best - menus were never given to us, we had to get up and find them ourselves; the food came out at different times; and water was not refilled. LOVE this sushi place - don't be fooled by the exterior, which doesn't seem very appealing. I would have walked right by it if I hadn't known from a friend that it was the place to go. The inside is small, with a few small tables close together, giving a snug interior, so you're sitting pretty close to your neighbors. (Potentially difficult for large parties) but I think it added to the "hole in the wall" feel! The server was pleasant and the food was AMAZING. My friend and I ordered a maki meal for two and both of us were very full and satisfied after...it even comes with a flaming entree! Very exciting to see it come out. Everything was absolutely delicious and I was raving about it at the end. Definitely recommend, if you don't mind very small rooms and a tucked away location that's relatively hard to get to. Cozy Korean/Japanese place with a lot to offer. The place itself is small, but the staff are very accommodating to make sure a group can stick together. We also were given a bottle of soju for our friend's birthday, on the house. Good selection of sushi and other Korean/Japanese dishes. Sushi with eel is very sweet and delicious, however I expected that those six pieces would come in regular size... Ridiculous me, it's probably very normal to have small sushi at this price here, which I think is generally more expensive than that in China. Besides this, I just realized that OPPA usually is not Japanese... Oh I'm having too much cliché as a poor student. My girlfriend and I decided to try something new today since we pretty much tried all the restaurants on Harvard ave. To my surprise this place was quite delicious. We ordered the seafood ramen, Hae Dup Bap, and spicy crispy salmon ball salad. The portion for the seafood ramen was plentiful for the price, however the taste was a little bland. The sashimi used for the Hae Dup Bap was very fresh. The best part of the meal was the spicy crispy salmon ball. It was all sorts of goodness in my mouth, think the salmon skin salad at Bon Chon but better! The gentleman who served us was very nice and polite.
