We really really wanted to love this place. It's one of the very few restaurants in town we hadn't tried... at that price point, we saved it for a special occasion. Our family appreciates great food, and our expectations were high as we set off to celebrate at Open Range.
There's a cool, open, industrial vibe with lots of natural light, especially at the front. We were seated at a table somewhat in the middle. Our server appeared almost immediately and she was lovely. The service level and the atmosphere were definitely on point.
We ordered several appetizers and a cocktail: beef tartare, jumbo shrimp cocktail and escargot. This is when the problems started. The tartare included stone ground mustard, sliced baby dill pickles and crostini in a fairly traditional presentation (molded mound of tartare). It was....bland. This would become a theme for the night. It was so bland that we didn't even finish it, even our son who loves tartare anything. The escargot we were especially excited about since it's not on many menus in Bozeman (we've usually have it at restaurants in Vegas, Austin or the Keys). While we loved the traditional preparation (garlic and butter!), it wasn't cooked well and had a weird aftertaste. The best part of the dish was dipping the included crostini in the garlic butter... but that was a steep price for some bread and butter, we all agreed. The jumbo shrimp weren't cleaned properly and several pieces still had the poop vein which is just sloppy. The cocktail sauce was plain, definitely in need of some horseradish. The portion of the shrimp was good (5-6 pieces?), but overall the appetizers were super disappointing. We were starting to wonder if the kitchen had misplaced all the seasoning. Were they trying to punk us? The bar gets props for a well-made cocktail though.
The next plate to arrive was a small grilled ceasar salad. This, sadly enough, was the highlight of the meal. It was presented well, grilled lightly and included a panko coated poached egg, anchovies, dressing and fresh parmasan. We really enjoyed these few bites!
The main course arrived along with the wine suggested by our server. We ordered a 6oz beef tenderloin, an 8oz beef sirloin and a hamburger. We immediately noticed the lack of attention to presentation... other restaurants at this price point take great care to make food look good. Open Range had apparently decided this wasn't important. The sirloin was either tough or the knife wasn't very sharp... we couldn't figure out which, but it was average at best with no seasoning. The tenderloin was a nice cut, but average at best with no seasoning. The meat came with a few overcooked and tasteless asparagus/carrots. We love our meat medium rare and while the tenderloin was spot on, the burger and sirloin were both undercooked. The hamburger was decent but again missing any seasoning.
When you order steaks, you also have to order sides at an extra charge... we all grumbled about that. The sides we got were creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. They were both good but not great... and once again, both seemed to be missing any seasoning. The general consensus while we were eating was that there was so much butter in everything that we all had a waxy aftertaste on our tongues and some queasiness that was setting in. On the plus side we enjoyed the wine... Secret Squirrel Red Blend (very woodsy and dry) and Whiplash Red Blend (mmmm... the favorite!).
By this time, we were already disappointed. But, valiently, we decided to give Open Range a chance to redeem themselves with a fantastic dessert. We ordered the Chocolate Pots de Creme and Strawberry Cheesecake. While both were fine, we all commented on the clear lack of effort put into the presentation... the "Pots de Creme" was just a chipped kitchen ramekin with some bland mousse, topped off with some tasteless whipped cream and a sliced strawberry. We ordered a very similar dessert at a restaurant not too long ago and the "pots" (more than one!) were hollowed out strawberries, filled with amazing swirled chocolate and hazelnut mousse and a beautiful garnish of fresh whipped cream, chopped hazelnuts and mint... the presentation was beautiful and the difference in effort is obvious.
When our to go box came, we were not surprised at that point to see a cheap to go box with Sysco stamped on the bottom... this is a restaurant that wants to be classy but just isn't. There is no attention to details, the food is average at best and for that price, can we at least get a to go box that doesn't fall apart on the way home? Our bill came to just over $250 (with tip) for the 3 of us. Open Range easily ranks as the least impressive restaurant we've ever been to at that price point. What a huge disappointment. read more
