The ambience isn't top notch, but the food was really good. Our server was pretty good at answering my questions about some of the selections. I haven't used Thai since the late 60's but still recall "khao phat" as something I used a lot while in country. Simply fried rice with a number of add ons and different levels of heat intensity. Parking was OK because we got there early. In fact, as we were leaving the place was packed and there was a line out the door. I think that says a lot for the taste and variety even if the place isn't a swank, up to date venue. This was my first time there and there was no doubt that the venue made me wonder a bit about what the food might be like. BUT, it was great and worth going back. We started with their spring rolls and they were wonderful. I did the Stir Fried Broccoli & Oyster Sauce. The broccoli was done just right. Not soft, but crisp and crunchy with just enough oyster sauce flavor to make me eat it all. My friend had Thai Red Curry because she likes hot stuff. Maybe that's why she's with me, but I digress. Small, Thai restaurant located right on the green line. The service was wonderful, and the food was inexpensive and delicious. Both my friend and myself got the Pad-See-Ew. Green curry was not as spicy as spicy noodles, but still that was little bit over than what we would have liked. May be next time i would like to try the food with a spice level of 3 to 4. First timer. Looking at the menu my mouth was watering. Not sure what to order. After full menu review I selected an item that wasn't what I really wanted. But what a great mistake I made. Crispy pork belly with basil and chilies. The sauce was extremely tasty and you could tell hand crafted with not fake out of the jar condiments. Went to On's for lunch and while the exterior is unassuming On's is definitely a place to try. On university and Snelling it is easy to get to and there are a few parking spots in the back otherwise off street parking the next block down is available. We had a chicken Pad Thai and a pork Pad Suki-Yaki. Both were good but in our opinion the pad Thai a bit too sweet and the pad suki-yaki was a bit too sour. We both like spicy food and the level 4 and 5 added the perfect balance of heat to our dishes. While I recommend On's I wouldn't necessarily recommend the pad Thai, there is better in the cities and On's has a lot of other dishes that in my opinion are more delicious. read more

It was hard to find an authentic Thai restaurant in the cities that actually achieve the bold sweet salty tart flavors of what is Thai food until I found On's. On's is the first place I think of when I want takeout. When I can't decide, I get the pad Thai. When I want something that taste like home, I get the Khao Mun Gai. I haven't had anything I didn't like from On's so you can't go wrong trying something you've never had. I have always been a huge fan of On's. I was close to a couple of the servers and would come here weekly with my coworkers or friends. The dishes I would typically order are the red and green curry, and the pad see ew. I'm a vegetarian (eat eggs). I ordered tofu red curry, and I got tofu red curry with tons of chicken in it. When I told my server, she took it back but didn't offer to give me a discount or anything, even though I'm a regular customer. If I ate any meat, I would get extremely sick. They overlooked that issue, which really put me off. While I loved On's, I will never come here again because of this incident. Plus the service is extremely SLOW. It's also based on a relatively small order but it was so good I had to go all in. The Tom Kha will haunt my dreams. Medium spicy was truly medium, and the flavors were so complex. I got it with mock duck. The fish cakes were light with this splendid dipping sauce that will haunt my dreams: sweet, sour, spicy.... The fresh spring rolls were the best I've ever had, and again, the dipping sauce was a perfect complement. Finally, chowbaby loves pad Thai so she got that with tofu. We had dinner here for the first time last night. First off the service was slow, granted it was a Friday night, but we sat for at least 15-20min. Before we had a wait staff come ask us for our order. My GF had the pad Thai, and was very disappointed. It didn't have much sauce, and very little peanut flavor. I had the panang curry, and it wasn't very creamy, and had a lot of weird hard shoots or something in it that was not good. The egg rolls were good and the chicken satay was good as well. I'm drooling just writing this review. The food here is some of the best Thai I've had! Also, they're not joking when they say that you can get the food Thai hot. That's my personal favorite level of spice but don't take it as a joke! This place is busy, the parking lot is cramped, but the food is fantastic! I've seen negative comments about their service, but I've been lucky to have had awesome service each time I come. The staff has been friendly and attentive despite being busy. Food can come out slowly as they do fill up and get busy so just keep that in mind if you are on a time crunch. This place has the best pad see ew I've had in the cities. The cravings I have for it are so real and so frequent it pains me both me and my wallet! I also tried the tom yum soup since it came highly recommended and it was really good. This would have been a 4 or 5 star review if the service wasn't absolutely terrible every time I went. With that being said, this review will only be about the service. While the food is tasty i.e spring rolls, thai red curry, pad thai, papaya salad - the excruciatingly long wait for our food orders and water refills are enough to make me pack up and opt for a different "not as good" restaurant. The food is good! The spring rolls are my favorite appetizer - they have ample vegetables and tasty meat and the fish sauce is yummy. I also love their Spicy Seafood Stir Fry, but their Pineapple Fried Rice was okay. It's just that the service is ridiculous. I have been here on a few occasions with my boyfriend and with a group of friends, and almost every time, it's never been THAT busy. They are not short staffed by any means and the restaurant isn't so big that the servers have sections bigger than 3 tables. I am an ex-server, so I know "server things" - most of the servers do not give even the bare minimum. I have had only ONE good experience with ONE server, unfortunately I don't know her name. But, she was knowledgable, friendly, and attentive - late 20s, early 30s. On a particular occasion, this server did not greet us until 10 mins in. We had a group of 6 and we weren't given enough tableware. We didn't get our orders in for another 15 mins. because our server didn't come back until then. We order apps because by the time she gets back, we are STARVING. It's been another 20ish mins. and "hangry Jess" asks where her food is. We simply ordered spring rolls. Those do not take any time at all to make! The server says "it will come out soon." We have all impatiently drank our waters and savagely eaten our ice cubes by now. Glasses are empty, so we have no food OR water. Once our apps come out, so do our entrees AT THE SAME TIME. Ridiculous. Ridiculous. RIDICULOUS. The tables next to us were angry as well. It's common sense - GIVE US COURTESY UPDATES and at least give us water! It really all comes down to management. The owner does not know what she is doing. The kitchen makes one plate at a time for ONE TABLE ORDER. This means one table next to you slowly gets all their food and no one else's orders are made simultaneously. I started going to On's 6 or 7yrs ago and am impressed in the changes they have made. When I first started going it was rare to see more than 2-4 other customers dining in but now it's always packed. I tend to order the shrimp pad Thai since I love the red sauce VS the brown sauce, it's always delicious! I also usually order the chicken satay which can be a hit or miss depending on the visit; we have had it pretty burnt. I'd give this place zero stars if that was an option. Can't tell you about how their food tastes because my party and I were practically invisible to the workers. We walked in and waited to be seated because the sign said so. Not only were we not greeted by a host/hostess of some sort, but we were ignored by 4 or 5 servers who had actually walked past us (shoulder distance) and made no eye contact and no effort to at least acknowledge our existence. After about 5 minutes of standing there being ignored, I politely asked the server who walked past us for the third time "Excuse me, should we seat ourselves or wait to be seated?" Instead of answering my actual question, she gets snippy with me and says something to the effect of "We have no more tables." (There was another section open with some empty tables.) So I respond, "Do you know how long the wait is?" Frustrated she talks under her breath and then shouts across the room at the guy who I guess was the host. Still across the room, he irritatedly tells her he is handling things and for her to leave it to him. Then she walks away not saying a single thing to us...not even a "he will help you." And then the guy goes and grabs two menus, with an attitude, and doesn't even acknowledge us still. He walks into the dining room (my party and I look at each other like "are we supposed to follow him?") Then he places the menus on the table of two people who had already been seated before we arrived. The vibe was just so hostile. I've been a hostess, server, and bartender before so I understand the pressures of the job but that's still no excuse to not greet guests or poorly communicate. The rude staff was enough reason for us to decide to leave the place. Any business that fails to treat customers with any sense of civility does not deserve our patronage. On a side note, we opted for Silhouette Bakery & Bistro right down the street instead. They were the complete opposite experience and I highly recommend them! read more

The laab salad I got was more leaning on a sweet side than savory. Their spicy levels are according to the thai spice level, not like Minnesota spice, so be careful when you order haha. Dim lighting inside the restaurant. There wasn't a wait when we went but if there was a wait, there is not much room to stand inside the restaurant. Friendly and efficient staff. The restaurant itself was a little bit like a hole in the wall but the food was good. We got the cream cheese wontons that came with a delicious dipping sauce and I got the chicken pad Thai which I would give a 6/10. Pad Thai was such a disappointment but everything else was delicious. The waiter charged us $30 above our bill and asked us if we had any cash when we paid with a credit card. When asked to see the bill, he started freaking out. He charged us three extra dishes of what we ordered. When confronted all he said was he'll fix it. Kind of dingy, but it's the type of place that you don't go for the atmosphere, just for the food. No thrills, just good food. I liked that there was a good variety of Thai food. You won't have a problem ordering, but I didn't like the fact I could customized the spice of dishes. I've always been able to customized the spice level, so it was odd I couldn't change the level for panang curry. The star dish was the pad see yew, it had actually had more vegetables than the noodles, which in my opinion, amazing. I hate it when restaurant pad their pad see yew (see what I did there?) with too much noodles and not enough meat/vegetables. Parking is a bit tricky, since it's in the back, but it's unpaved. Ok, so the bottom line is that the food is incredible and authentic and absolutely worth waiting in a long line to eat. Do not miss it. And for anyone on here complaining about the service, it's worth saying that this is clearly a place about the food, no frills. If you want really attentive service, there are plenty of restaurants you can count on for it. This is simply a place to get extraordinary thai food. It's not fancy, they're a bit disorganized, they hardly ever pick up their phone. In my mind, that's just part of the experience. If it's not an experience you want, that's OK, but a lot of these complaints strike me as, frankly, a bit entitled. Fantastic Thai food. The complexity of flavor in On's dishes is astounding--she's got an awful lot going on in each one, and you'll taste vegetables, spices, and foundations/sauces you've never had anywhere else. The green and seafood curries are amazing. As others have written, the Pad See Ew is remarkable. And if you like eating and learning, like I do, you will try 10 different dishes on 10 different visits and every single one will be a new experience. The service is terrible, both in person and with take-out. I have called to place take-out orders during their busiest hours and had them pick up the phone and hang it back up again. I have had them just not pick up the phone. (I know you are there, On's Thai Kitchen! You cannot fool me!) I advise against trying to get take-out during lunch or peak dinner hours, including on weekdays. At the restaurant, they only ever have two servers and one busperson, even at their busiest times, so the wait for a table can be long, and there may be interminable stretches of time before anyone takes your order, or brings the check. Your table and chairs may not have gotten the attentive cleaning they deserved after the last patrons. Your out-of-town guests will not get the best, first impression. Oh yes, On's Kitchen has maddened me many times. But, oh good god, the food! read more
