Oliver's: Once a Favorite, Now a Maybe I've been a longtime fan of Oliver's -- the ambiance, the French bistro aesthetic, the sense that you've stumbled into a little corner of Paris tucked into Brooklyn. But my most recent visit made me question if the magic is fading. Service: Cold and Defensive Our waitress was... difficult. Dismissive, oddly defensive, and unwilling to take accountability. At one point, she claimed I didn't get the dessert menu because I had stepped outside to smoke -- which I hadn't. Instead of simply placing the menu on the table like any competent server would, she made it my fault. That kind of interaction just kills the mood. Food: Technically Fine, Totally Forgettable Everything was cooked well, sure. But nothing tasted like anything special. Sauces were bland. Seasoning was minimal. No dish stood out. It all felt uninspired, like the chef was following a script but forgot the soul. Price: $127 -- For What? With service that felt icy and food that didn't deliver, $127 for one person felt absurd. I've had better meals at half the price where I was treated like a human being, not an inconvenience. I'm hoping this was just an off night. Oliver's has been great in the past. But the vibe, the food, and the service all missed the mark -- and for now, I can't recommend it the way I used to. read more

I had the best time here and will return. Yes it is cash only with $3 fee plus what your bank charges you for using an ATM. They definitely have the French bistro vibe down and it is very intimate setting. So if you are coming solo, don't be shy. The staff was friendly and professional- no yelling or any rudeness. My serve gave me generous wine pours so I was in heaven. I order the duck pate, kids burger, duck entree and the profiteroles. This is easily, and there's no comparison really, the closest you will get to being in a bistro in Paris without actually being there. The food is 10/10 and so authentic that if you blind taste tested after living in Paris for 20 years you wouldn't be able to tell the difference AT ALL. The service is 10/10, so warm and welcoming and friendly, and all of the staff work together so cohesively. The VIBE is really perfect as well, they can open the front window wall for a true street facing Parisian experience. Honorable mention for the best dirty gin martini I've had in years. I love this place and have been coming here for years. Excellent pastries and chocolate croissants and sometimes savory baked goods and hot or iced coffee, Americanos etc in the morning on your way to work 10/10 recommend. Also love their food for brunch or dinner. We love coming here to watch the NYC Marathon because the front windows open completely and it's and inside / outside perfect way to enjoy and watch the runners run right by. Our first time visiting, we arrived early for dinner service (6:30). As the place filled up, the service became nonexistent. Any time we needed anything (water, more wine, the check...and a second time asking for the check), we needed to get up and find a staff member. They were woefully understaffed. Food was ok. Cheese plate was, well, a cheese plate. Decently presented, but whatever. Mussels portion was HUGE -- definitely shareable; fries were cold. The Nicoise Salad was underwhelming, as the tuna was completely opaque and overdone. (I saw someone else's Nicoise and the tuna looked proper: seared but pink in the center)...and *very* salty. Ambiance was nice, music selection was definitely up our alley (late-1960s R&B). All that said, I think we'll go somewhere else next time. read more

Terrible place! We went there for dinner with my husband and kids, and the owner looked at us and said the restaurant was full -- even though it was completely empty. It was clear she just didn't want us there, and we felt discriminated against. The place is very expensive and disgusting. Strong but had a nice slice of apple and apple flavor - escargot: good garlic taste and spices - fried cauliflower: this was good. I was having a nice Friday evening dinner here and was extremely impressed by the appetizers (octopus perfectly cooked) so I had very high expectations for my main course, which was a "pan seared" salmon. I had opted for this dish over the vegetable risotto. At my first bite of the salmon, everything seemed to be going well. The sauce was amazing. However, as I continued to eat it, I noticed a strange taste coming from the salmon. Upon further investigation, I realized a few things about the salmon. First, it was not fresh. It had very clearly been frozen and then thawed before cooking. And second, the skin was not pan seared at all. It was soggy, as if it had barely been cooked and was still retaining water being previously frozen. I was thoroughly grossed out and extremely disappointed in this main course, especially given that it was a special. I hope this was just a fluke, so I'm willing to give this restaurant another try since everything was tasty aside from the salmon. read more

The duck breast was requested medium rare, it was not cooked to perfection; the border was cooked well and the center was rare, there was too much contrast. I decided for one glass of Bellini $9 which was average. Service is attentive. The outdoor patio area was open as well as their window which the air conditioner was not in use. Cocktail: watery Steak Tartar: oversized chewy chunks, gross sauce Escagot: rubbery "Here is your check. Hope you happen to walk around in this modern age with a wad of cash in your pocket like a weed dealer... Oh. you don't have cash on you?No problem, monseuir, you can get up out of your chair and walk to our sketchy ATM next to the bathroom, and get charged a banking fee in order to pay for your mediocre meal." This Bistro has surprisingly good reviews considering the awful experience that I had this afternoon. Initially, I had to request that my water glass be changed twice since the rim was stained with lip impressions. The third glass that came was also stained but I decided to keep it in embarrassing disbelief. Note, there was no apology offered. The waiter picked up the glass (twice) and looked at it in the light while walking away as if I was making it up. The glasses on the table next to us weren't any cleaner. The food itself was very poor. I ordered a brisket tartine, which was supposed to be brisket in "jus," on country bread topped with fried eggs and hollandaise sauce. What came was a bowl of transparent liquid in which sat my country bread and brisket, upon which was two underdone eggs and a thin, runny, white sauce that tasted like heavily diluted butter and possibly some cream. By the time I forced my way through the first third, the bread had become a soggy mess by absorbing all of the flavourless liquid in the bowl. I stopped eating not long thereafter. Sadly, my spouse's plate wasn't much better. The waiter didn't once come over to ask if we needed anything until our table was bussed and I requested the bill. Once the bill came I placed my credit card upon it and was then informed that they only accept cash or American Express BUT there is an ATM in the corner of the restaurant; an ATM that tells you "the owner of this ATM will charge a flat $2.50 service fee." Once I had my cash, I sat at my table as my waiter conspicuously wandered around "keeping busy" likely with the hopes of me leaving without asking for change. When I had had enough, I got up and asked for change thereby leaving a 10% tip, which I thought was generous considering the lack of service, uneaten food, and overall experience that we had. When the waiter calculated what I was leaving her, she spat out, "is something wrong?!" I said yes and then proceeded to tell her that the food was terrible. Her response was to say, "you know I'm not the cook." I responded that the service was not much better than the food. She then slammed my change on the counter and exclaimed, "I guess I won't be seeing you again!" No, no you will not. Perhaps I was there on an off-day; however, considering the absence of professionalism and entitlement of our server, I would think our experience is the usual. I'd go out on a limb and say this restaurant was once authentically owned but now whoever is in the kitchen cannot cook French cuisine nor frankly, cook at all. Beware. read more

Cook the salmon correctly please. You have a beautiful French restaurant everything is so good. I don't even mind the Parisian style service- but it's usually justified by a crispy skin salmon that I cannot complain about. Get it fresh, do not freeze it, hot pan with oil, remove the scales, score the skin, lightly salt, place in pan at high heat until crispy skin happens. Then flip it over, to finish at a nice medium. LIGHTLY sauce the fish if you must, leaving the customer with a beautiful crunchy, salty skin to add depth and texture. Then charge $34 for it. read more

This is a solid little place in the Park Slope/Gowanus area, serving up French classics. The service is lovely, with friendly staff and good recommendations. When I went, our party had oysters, escargot, the goat's milk cheese, chicken pate, the rack of lamb special, and the quarter chicken entree. I wish the bread was served warm and was more of a French bread. I didn't love the pate and the veggies on the board could have been fresher, but the rest of the food was delicious. The lamb was cooked perfectly medium rare with a nice squash puree. The quarter chicken was tender and juicy and the breast was actually my favorite part (which rarely happens!).
