OLDWEST CAFE lives up to its Yelp reputation. Good food, value for your money, great ambience, and efficient and friendly service. I visited Oldwest at the insistence of a friend while in Denton. Everything she said about it was true, in spades. First the food: I had my standard breakfast. Eggs, hash browns, sausage patties, and biscuits and gravy. All well prepared and with generous portions. She had eggs, hash browns, thick cut bacon, and a pancake as big as her head. While I was completely full I was able to help her with her pancake. Service was friendly, efficient and helpful without being overbearing. Although the place was packed at 10 am on a Thursday we were seated quickly. New to the very full menu, I was given ample time to decide. Food came out quickly. We never felt rushed. I also noticed that tables were bussed very quickly. And the ambience? Well, if you had any doubt about the theme, you would figure it out pretty quickly. Full blown western. Lots to look at and take in. A great family place for kids of all ages. My friend took me to this place. He said they're always busy and I could definitely see that. The staff is great and very welcoming. Despite them being very busy, we were able to get a table right away. I ordered their Six Shooter. Two open faced biscuits smothered in homemade sausage gravy and then topped with a chicken fried steak and two eggs. It was the perfect meal since I was looking for biscuits n gravy, and chicken fried steak. I got the best of both worlds all in one meal. Everything served was delicious and more than enough for one person. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a nice crispy batter. This place is awesome. I brought my family here after church on Sunday. The place was hopping and the wait was 25 minutes, though it only took 20 minutes to serve us. The server was efficient and kind. Drinks came right away and food about 15 minutes after we ordered. The food was hot, large portions, and so good! I loved Old West Cafe in Grapevine and liked it in Bedford. I was stoked to find out there's one in Denton. We went at 10 am on a Sunday and it was packed. We waited about 20 minutes for a big top. The server was patient, accommodating, and kind. We enjoyed the massive lemon blueberry, chocolate chip, and white chocolate chip pancakes but they were oddly sticky (couldn't easily remove them from the plate). We really loved the iced caramel coconut latte. The only dish we didn't care for was the chicken fried chicken because it was beaten too flat, thus, too dry. read more

BACKGROUND: Conveniently located off I-35E, Oldwest Cafe (OWC) is by all accounts a stalwart breakfast place in Denton and the crowds prove it. ATMOSPHERE: Like it's restaurant namesake, OWC's interior is decorated in a western style that is endearing to the theme including down to the seats and booths. The restaurant is also larger inside than what it seems from the outside. Clean and well lit, we like dining here. FOOD: We really enjoy their food and have been back 3 times in the last 2-3 months. Wish we had more free weekends! My favorite has been the French toast, but my biggest gripe is that I wish they'd use Texas toast (larger bread) than the bread they use now. I'd have to order 4 to be satisfied. The pancakes on the other hand are big and so if you're hungry, order the pancakes. Last time I had a lemon syrup w/ blueberries and it was pretty tasty but I had to scrape off about half of the syrup because I don't like it that sweet. Next time I'll order the syrup on the side. Bacon and sausage have always been good and the eggs always cooked to perfection. Wife really enjoys their hashbrowns so I'll order it as a side so she can have mine. SERVICE: While it does get busy, we've never had a bad service day. PARKING: Generous! Y'all don't have to park in the front of the restaurant. This complex's parking lot is sprawling. Can i just Say...WooooW! This place is awesome. The omelette took up the whole plate, grilled sourdough bread was thick, warm and didn't stand a chance. Kids meal flapjack was enough for two. I've been to the Oldwest Cafe in Grapevine, and it's in my top breakfast places. This one in Denton is nothing short of amazing. The coffee/tea bar is so good. What was nice about it, was that the drinks weren't so sweet you couldn't drink them. Portion sizes on the breakfast meals were so large, my family of three could have eaten 1 meal and split it. It's a cute place, and although it was crowded, with a wait, it was worth every minute. We will definitely be back for the peach cobbler pancakes! read more

Disappointed Despite the Hype This was our second visit, but the first time dining. On our initial trip, the wait was very long, so we left. This time, we visited during a slow period and were seated immediately, which was a pleasant start. I had high hopes for this place, given its rave reviews and reputation for scratch kitchen cooking, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. What we liked: The bacon was cooked to perfection--crispy and flavorful. However, at $2 per strip, it felt overpriced. The coffee was excellent: strong, smooth, and not watered down or overly bitter. Everything else: The Benny Omelette was overly watery due to an abundance of tomatoes and pre-cooked spinach, and the hollandaise sauce was bland and unimpressive. The country fried steak was fried perfectly but lacked seasoning, and the gravy was basic, adding little flavor. The loaded grits were inconsistent. One order had a light sprinkling of bacon, while the other seemed like someone emptied the entire bacon bit container. Great for a bacon lover, but the excessive grease wasn't enjoyable. The eggs were undercooked. Over-easy should have slightly runny yolks, but these came with uncooked whites throughout. The food, while not terrible, was underwhelming and missed the mark on several dishes. For the price point, it didn't feel worth it, and I don't think we'll be back. read more

The first time I went to Od West apparently I didn't enjoy that much. My second visit was much more favorable. Went at about 9am on a Wednesday. I'd say it was half capacity so getting a booth was no problem. My wife and I were seated immediately and had a very nice young lady who took our orders. The menu is surprisingly big. I got the Six Shooter which is biscuits and sausage gravy topped with chicken fried steak (or chicken fried chicken) and eggs. For a side I got hash brown casserole. My wife got Eggs Benedict we also split an order of French toast. Very good. The container the syrup comes in is a big as the coffee pot they pour your coffee with. Food came out hot and fresh and was really really good. The service and the food were all fantastic. I'd avoid this location on weekends unless you are willing to wait. Often when passing by on weekends there is a line outside or people waiting to go in. There are however small two person booths as well. It's the larger groups that will end up waiting. But 1-4 people shouldn't have much of a wait. Will definitely go back. The food is that home cooking stuff that makes you happy. read more

Browsing the menu, I was looking at the Sweet Bread options (aka French toast). The Wild Bunch caught my attention when I saw the words sliced bananas and chocolate drizzle. I almost made the mistake of choosing toast as the breakfast side, but immediately corrected myself and got the Hashbrown Casserole. Unlike most hashbrowns which lack flavor, this one is full of it with a bit of heat. In addition to the sausage patties, at least a couple eggs and the casserole, there was half a banana sliced and spread over the French toast. At first, I thought the wrong syrup was provided. There was a noticeable peanut butter taste in the syrup. Sometimes an abundance of food is a good thing; other times, it is just too much food. There had been times I would have breakfast and not know when I would next eat. Unfortunately, today was not one of those mornings. When I mentioned to my waitress my wish to order just the French toast, she told it was an off-menu option. For someone who does not enjoy wasting food, I wished it was an on-menu option. The restaurant appeared to take the pandemic seriously. When I approached the host stand, I was asked for my name, number of guests and mobile number. Immediately, I received a text requesting that I wait either outside or in my car until my table was ready. The staff were all wearing face masks correctly. There were plenty of hand sanitizer dispensers hung on the wall. Several of the booths were blocked off to allow for social distancing. The creamer and sweeteners come in a fun cup. But, and a big but, the tables on the floor did not appear to be sufficiently distanced from each other or my booth. read more

I hate going to places that have a big hype to them, because they usually fail to measure up to the hype. Oldwest has a big time rep, and my wife had been to their other location, but I had never been. It all started when we both had a free weekday, with very little tasks or responsibilities, so we decided to make a date of it. We got there at brunch time, and was not disappointed. I'm really incredibly picky about hash browns. These were perfect, as were the eggs and sausage. The sausage was nice and mild with just a touch of spice on the back end. My wife's big surprise was the hashbrown casserole. Dang! They are very tasty. I thought she was going to lick the plate! Additionally, the coffee is quite strong, almost enough to make the spoon stand up. So good. The one negative was that my biscuit was just a tad on the dry side, but jelly fixed that right up.
