This place is awesome. I brought my family here after church on Sunday. The place was hopping and the wait was 25 minutes, though it only took 20 minutes to serve us. The server was efficient and kind. Drinks came right away and food about 15 minutes after we ordered. The food was hot, large portions, and so good! My friend took me to this place. He said they're always busy and I could definitely see that. The staff is great and very welcoming. Despite them being very busy, we were able to get a table right away. I ordered their Six Shooter. Two open faced biscuits smothered in homemade sausage gravy and then topped with a chicken fried steak and two eggs. It was the perfect meal since I was looking for biscuits n gravy, and chicken fried steak. I got the best of both worlds all in one meal. Everything served was delicious and more than enough for one person. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a nice crispy batter. Disappointed Despite the Hype This was our second visit, but the first time dining. On our initial trip, the wait was very long, so we left. This time, we visited during a slow period and were seated immediately, which was a pleasant start. I had high hopes for this place, given its rave reviews and reputation for scratch kitchen cooking, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to expectations. What we liked: The bacon was cooked to perfection--crispy and flavorful. However, at $2 per strip, it felt overpriced. The coffee was excellent: strong, smooth, and not watered down or overly bitter. Everything else: The Benny Omelette was overly watery due to an abundance of tomatoes and pre-cooked spinach, and the hollandaise sauce was bland and unimpressive. The country fried steak was fried perfectly but lacked seasoning, and the gravy was basic, adding little flavor. The loaded grits were inconsistent. One order had a light sprinkling of bacon, while the other seemed like someone emptied the entire bacon bit container. Great for a bacon lover, but the excessive grease wasn't enjoyable. The eggs were undercooked. Over-easy should have slightly runny yolks, but these came with uncooked whites throughout. I loved Old West Cafe in Grapevine and liked it in Bedford. I was stoked to find out there's one in Denton. We went at 10 am on a Sunday and it was packed. We waited about 20 minutes for a big top. The server was patient, accommodating, and kind. We enjoyed the massive lemon blueberry, chocolate chip, and white chocolate chip pancakes but they were oddly sticky (couldn't easily remove them from the plate). The restaurant is also larger inside than what it seems from the outside. Clean and well lit, we like dining here. FOOD: We really enjoy their food and have been back 3 times in the last 2-3 months. Wish we had more free weekends! My favorite has been the French toast, but my biggest gripe is that I wish they'd use Texas toast (larger bread) than the bread they use now. I'd have to order 4 to be satisfied. The pancakes on the other hand are big and so if you're hungry, order the pancakes. Last time I had a lemon syrup w/ blueberries and it was pretty tasty but I had to scrape off about half of the syrup because I don't like it that sweet. Next time I'll order the syrup on the side. Bacon and sausage have always been good and the eggs always cooked to perfection. Wife really enjoys their hashbrowns so I'll order it as a side so she can have mine. SERVICE: While it does get busy, we've never had a bad service day. PARKING: Generous! Y'all don't have to park in the front of the restaurant. This complex's parking lot is sprawling. I've been to the Oldwest Cafe in Grapevine, and it's in my top breakfast places. This one in Denton is nothing short of amazing. The coffee/tea bar is so good. What was nice about it, was that the drinks weren't so sweet you couldn't drink them. Portion sizes on the breakfast meals were so large, my family of three could have eaten 1 meal and split it. Browsing the menu, I was looking at the Sweet Bread options (aka French toast). The Wild Bunch caught my attention when I saw the words sliced bananas and chocolate drizzle. I almost made the mistake of choosing toast as the breakfast side, but immediately corrected myself and got the Hashbrown Casserole. Unlike most hashbrowns which lack flavor, this one is full of it with a bit of heat. In addition to the sausage patties, at least a couple eggs and the casserole, there was half a banana sliced and spread over the French toast. At first, I thought the wrong syrup was provided. There was a noticeable peanut butter taste in the syrup. Sometimes an abundance of food is a good thing; other times, it is just too much food. There had been times I would have breakfast and not know when I would next eat. Unfortunately, today was not one of those mornings. When I mentioned to my waitress my wish to order just the French toast, she told it was an off-menu option. For someone who does not enjoy wasting food, I wished it was an on-menu option. The restaurant appeared to take the pandemic seriously. When I approached the host stand, I was asked for my name, number of guests and mobile number. Immediately, I received a text requesting that I wait either outside or in my car until my table was ready. The staff were all wearing face masks correctly. There were plenty of hand sanitizer dispensers hung on the wall. Several of the booths were blocked off to allow for social distancing. The creamer and sweeteners come in a fun cup. Old West Cafe used to be my favorite breakfast spot, it has now become too popular to the point it's lost it's Old West flavor and become just like all the other breakfast/lunch spots everywhere you turn. Breakfast has become way too pricey and just seems to have shrunk in size. I don't mind if the portions have gotten smaller, just make the price smaller as well. Just my opinion on the matter. I'll go to Old West Cafe maybe once every 6 months now just because, but mainly i just eat at home for breakfast or just do brunch elsewhere.
