Braised beef with biang biang noodles
Sheryl T.

I crave their biang biang noodles ALL THE TIME! Tucked away in the crystal mall food court, Old Xian is in my staple rotation of comfort food. They have another restaurant location storefront in Crystal mall too but I have not been. The braised pork biang biang noodle is full of flavour, a meaty bite, chewy noodles that are oh so satisfying and with chilli oil, it's the perfect dish. The braised pork is also tender. I recently tried the sour pork too and I love it for different reasons! The sour edge from the sour cabbages makes this dish come alive, I love the additions of the tofu and vegetables as well. The pork is not braised so it's not tender but chewier. They installed an automatic screen where you can order from so fear not if you don't speak mandarin. You can easily pick out your meal as there are pictures and English names.

Although the parking can be challenging, this place is worth visiting! We had the biang-biang spicy hot oil noodles with braised beef, and it was THAT good we still thinking about it weeks later. The noodle was perfectly cooked for chewiness, the serving amount for the beef was generous and it was tender, got the right flavour throughout. The staff was courteous and helped and answered our questions. The portion was big and I had to take the rest home for dinner! We tried the crispy sweet, sour, and spicy chicken and that was excellent too. The chicken was juicy and the sauce was very tasty. Looking forward to try different things on our next visit

#39 Xi'an Hand-Pulled Noodle with Hot Spicy Oil - 3 stars. Stewed Lamb (thin) Noodle in Soup ($14.99) - 3.5 stars. Lunch 2022-12-24

We got lunch here on a busy Christmas Eve in 2022. It was a 10 minute wait for 3 dishes. Old Xian was the only place I ordered from that didn't have a buzzer. Noodles were the best part but some of the food was quite oily with veggies lacking. Buns were a little underwhelming. #39 Xi'an Hand-Pulled Noodle with Hot Spicy Oil - 3 stars I did low spice and it was just enough. Noodles were thick and great. Not enough bok choy, way too much cabbage, and overall a very oily heavy dish. Stewed Lamb (thin) Noodle in Soup ($14.99) - 3.5 stars Tasty, definitely game-y in flavor. #16 Pork Bun with Scallion ($4.50) - 3 stars Very average, these are just big, with a thicker bun than other restaurants.

Old Xian's is one of those places that that Grayson and I always mean to revisit because it's so good but never do because we're never in the area. With that being said, lately we've made it a mission to revisit the places that we've enjoyed because we've been in a bit of a rut when it comes to where to eat. Old Xian's was the first on the list. Since Grayson enjoyed the beef noodles with tomato and egg so much last time, he decided to get it again. He spent some time debating which kind of noodle he wanted but in the end, he went with their infamous thin and flat biangbiang noodles. If you're ever wondering which kind of noodle to go with when you're here, go with the biang biang because it's unreal!

Looks like udon more than biang biang noodles

I showed the lady what I wanted with a picture and I got something totally different. No attempt to try and fix it because it's what I ordered... The cold sesame biang biang noodle was ok. Not something I'd pay for what it is though.

Sometimes I crave their biang biang noodles, and today was the perfect occasion for it! Biang biang noodles are hand stretched, belt-looking noodles that are thick and flat. Today we got the Braised Beef Noodles. It was chewy and soy sauce based, the meat was salty but the noodles were bland. Wish there were more veggies in it, it kinda got bland after several bites. Still pretty good but a bit too greasy for us. It's inevitable though since the dish is traditionally made with sizzling oil. I also recommend the braised lamb one! That one is spicy and does not get bland at all. A little tip - order through Fantuan when you can, they're usually cheaper with discounts.

Another delicious option in the Crystal Mall food court. Parking is available in the dizzying mall lot below. Staff were friendly. The lamb soup noodle was pretty good. Great for warming up on a dcold day. Nice tender pieces of meat, and thick "puffy" noodles. Reminded me of foam packaging for some reason. A bit pricey at $12 a bowl. If I wasn't craving this I probably would've gone for pho nearby. With that said, there are $9-10 noodle dishes here too. Wouldn't mind coming back at some point, though the food court has plenty of other options.

Great soup and noodles. I go once a month when I'm in the area. Get the wide biang biang chilli noodles. I get those when I am not having the excellent lamb pita soup

a plate of noodles and meat

There's multiple locations across van. The one in rmd is a dine in restaurant, and the crystal mall one is in their food court. We've basically tried everything on the menu, but our fav is still the fried cold noodles (liangpi) for sure. It's a great variation of the traditional cold noodles, and we actually preferred the stir fried version more another good choice is the 3 sauce hand pulled noodles if you can't choose which sauce to try

Cumin lamb blade sheared noodles + herbal tea
Heather M.

I came here for the (dry) cumin lamb noodles and definitely got what I wanted except that I expected there to be a lot more meat in a dish that costs $14 after tax. I was excited about the lamb but there was hardly any and it was small tiny pieces - so I paid almost that much just for the noodles. I added an herbal tea drink for $3 which brought the bill to about $17 before tip. In total, this lunch cost me over $18. Blade sheared is a special way of eating noodles and I searched high and low for this place until I found it so I just paid. Lots of neat menu options I'll be back to try the "thin" noodles next time, skip ordering a drink, and I'll dine-in instead ~ Don't recommend take-out here it's a place you'd better sit in and eat fresh. I ended up taking it home but the. frying it again in the wok because it steamed in the car on the way home and the noodles were not as al dente as they would have been if I ate it in the restaurant. They're thick enough noodles as they are so you don't want them to turn mushy or else it feels like too much noodle dangling in the back of your mouth. There are 3 types of noodle thickness to choose from and this time I chose the medium thickness. You can also get the soup version instead of dry version like mine.

Peking Duck course was fantastic. Food was more than enough for 4 people. Duck lettuce wrap was fantastic we couldn't finish all of it. Hot and Sour Soup was rather sour than spicy. It was not the best, but tasted alright though. My parents would've liked the soup to be a bit spicy. Sliced pork with garlic was good. Deluxe Fried Rice was fresh and tasty. Staff was helpful bringing water and more Hoisin sauce. Food was pretty good. We ended up taking some leftovers home. It was a wonderful dining experience at Chongqing!

The place used to be a fried chicken (fast food) joint way back, so the seating area is actually not that large. Most of the space is taken up by the kitchen. Staff are friendly and professional. The food is typical mid end banquet style, but the flavours are good, and the value is there. Lettuce wrap - standard restaurant fare. Decent quality. Fried green bean - nice and spicy, thanks to the house chili sauce. They can tune the spiciness on this one. Default is on the spicier side. Tasty. Shanghai fried noodles - standard restaurant fare. Hot & sour soup - better than the competition. Not sure what's special about it, but it stood out. Chongqing deluxe fried rice - one of their signature dishes. Great mix of flavour. Crispy rice with shrimp soup - honestly this would be the one dish that wasn't that great. Rice blocks were crispy, but the shrimp soup was nothing special. I'd skip this dish. Other than the crispy rice, everything is pretty standard compared to similar places out there. Expectations were met. Very good value. I'd gladly eat here again. Recommended.

I also recommend the mouthwatering chicken (koushuiji/口水雞) which also has a delicious chilli oil spice. Service wise, this restaurant is pretty small and is more of a no-frills service. There aren't a lot of tables so things shouldn't take too long but the usually aren't to many staff on shift. For the price, I think the value makes sense for a rather uncommon dish. Overall, a great choice if you're in the Metrotown area and want to try something new!

They're a Northern Chinese spot that specializes in Guangxi cuisine and located right next to Onezo Tapioca. Even though it closes at 9:00pm, there were still people after us that came in for late night eats. We didn't have any issues with service; they came by to fill our tea several times. Just wish they gave bigger cups. Food comes out in a hurry. The menu is short and sweet: noodles, rice meals, appetizers, wontons and drinks. Trip #1 First visit was on a late Wednesday evening (around 8:30pm). - Mama's unique special milk tea ($4.80) - we added grass jelly ($0.50) which was unfortunately from a can. The milk tea was different than the norm as there was sweet fermented rice bits mixed in. Decent but don't think we'd get it again. - Sour and spicy crystal noodle ($6.98) - glass noodles with minced pork, bean sprouts, cilantro and peanuts. We got our dish medium spicy which was mild. Broth was excellently balanced; loved the sour notes. Glass noodles had a satisfying bite and cilantro added freshness to the bowl. - House special escargot rice noodles in spicy noodles ($13.98) - escargot, pig ear, beef, tofu, marinated egg, shrimp and pork intestine. There was also pickled green beans, bamboo shoots, tofu skins, wood ear mushrooms and peanuts. Really different with a good variety of textures and flavour. Loved all the types of meat, especially the tender beef, pork intestine and pig ear. Escargot was tasty but we wanted more. The tofu skin and wood ear mushrooms underneath were excellent. - Fresh meat wonton ($5.98) - this comes in a light broth with 15 homemade wontons, pickled seaweed and baby dried shrimp. Broth is basic but the wontons are great. Trip #2 Second trip was on a Friday evening (around 8:00pm). - Braised beef, pig ear and tofu ($10.98) - the beef is the same as what you get in their noodle bowls. Pig ear wasn't crunchy but the sauce (some sort of Chinese mushroom) was good. Tofu was fairly standard. For the price, it's a small dish; I didn't think it was worth it. - Shredded chicken, vegetable and cold noodle with house sauce ($9.53) - they asked us how spicy we wanted it; we went with spicy. Again, it's not so don't worry. The noodles were thin and the sauce was almost like a dan dan mein. We liked how it wasn't overwhelmingly peanuty. - Beef and escargot rice noodle in spicy soup ($9.98) - the beef is super tender. Again, the escargots are hard to find but everything else in this bowl is delicious. Tofu skin, wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, peanuts and pickled green beans. Satisfying and spiciness finally came through. An interesting twist to the usual Northern Chinese spots typically found in town. Cash or debit only.

Comes with soup too. The sichuan marbled pork & cabbage hit the spot. That tastyy Sichuan chili pepper taste. Beautiful. There is also an option for the thick (blade) noodles with no extra charge, which is a nice perk. The quantity was huge. I left stuffed and happy. The soup is very hot, so I usually pour it onto a spoon and drink it from there. #13 is translated as "Steamed Mini Pork Buns" in English and Shanghai Xiaolongbao in Chinese on the menu, which is misleading. When I ordered it last time, it turned out to be the same buns as #14, just steamed instead of deep-fried. They're large and not mini at all like traditional XLB.
