The best word I can find to describe Old Village Inn's dining experience is disappointing. The food was good, (which is the only reason that I didn't give this one star,) but we were treated so poorly that I can't in good conscience recommend that anybody else suffer through it. It's obvious that this place's owner has a very cozy relationship with the area resorts because both places we stayed during our two Ogunquit visits over the last year highly recommended the Old Village Inn. Unfortunately, our experience in July of 2010 didn't come close to living up to the hype. The atmosphere is fine, but we had to wait about 15 minutes past our reservation time, something unexpected but forgivable with a great experience. The problems started with our cocktail order, mine a pomegranate martini and his a blue martini. Both drinks came to the table devoid of color or flavor. They both tasted the same, like chilled vodka. If we had wanted vodka in a fancy glass, we would have ordered that. We discretely summoned and waitress and explained the problem, and she scurried away without so much as an, "I'm sorry." Shortly thereafter the bar manager appeared table side with major attitude. He argued that martinis are supposed to taste like vodka, and he didn't see a problem with our perfectly good drinks. I should mention that I tended bar for about 10 years, and I know how to make a proper drink. I also know that you NEVER argue with a customer. This guy broke every rule in the hospitality book. He attempted a standoff, and we quietly and politely, but firmly insisted that we didn't want these drinks. He finally took them away in a huff and sent the server back to see if we wanted anything else. We ordered a raspberry vodka and soda and a glass of wine, drinks that are virtually impossible to screw up. The bartender at Old Village Inn doesn't know how to do anything but pour simple drinks. The dinner was tasty. We enjoyed Artichoke and Crab Casserole, followed by Herb-crusted Rack of Lamb and Pan Seared Scallops. We skipped dessert. Unfortunately, the horrible way we were treated by management at the Old Village Inn permanently tainted our opinion of the restaurant. We tried to keep the issue very discrete, and the bar manager turned it into a major issue. Polite guests don't deserve to be treated that way, and I'll never go back. read more

We arrived early for check in, thinking maybe room would be ready or we could drop our stuff off. I said "hi we are here to check in to our room" and the guy looked at me and said in a serious voice "no you're not". I thought he was kidding with how rude he was, but he wasn't. He said "I haven't even touched any of the rooms. Check in as at 3". I didn't like his tone at all so I gave him an attitude back and said "ok sometimes you can check in early so we didn't know". And then he goes "um the rooms also only hold 2 people. You should have known that when you booked on Expedia. It says it". I thought to myself-wow this is our welcome to the inn? This guy needs an attitude adjustment. I said "oh we didn't know that. It said queen bed and pull out couch" so we assumed that 3 would be okay". He said "well that's our policy and I really should not let the 3rd person in at all but I'll charge you 50 dollars extra instead". 50 dollars for what? To add an extra set of towels? He said we could put our bags in the dining room until 3 pm. I was so pissed off. The rooms are so outdated and disgusting. Peeling wallpaper. Water stains on walls. Also, one "room" is actually 2 rooms. Ironically there was more than enough room for 3 people. The room was bigger than the Marriott! Literally there was a separate room with a door and a pull out couch. And 3 people couldn't stay there? Absolutely ridiculous. The room was so dry we all woke up coughing and with stuffy noses. The guy told us that they are closed on Sunday's so just drop your key off. How weird is that? Literally there was no one at the inn on Sunday. No wonder why there is no one in their dining room eating. The people who run this are miserable. I picked this place only because of its location and price. I will walk an extra mile and pay more next time. read more

We arrived here rushed - trying to find a dinner before a show at the playhouse. Although the service was slow at first, once we told the man who seated us that we were in a hurry - everything sped right up. From the fresh baked rolls - the best I've had in a long time - to my haddock dinner to the coffee - everything was delicious. The service was quick and we had plenty of time to eat but wished we had more time to better enjoy our meals since the food was so good. I had my family visiting from MD and they wanted a NE experience so we chose the Old Village Inn because of it's location to downtown Ogunquit. We were greeted by a very nice man (didn't get his name), but he was very friendly. Check-in and out was very quick and easy. We only stayed for one night and didn't realize the Inn was haunted until we read a few reviews. Not sure I like the "poltergeist" description since I correlate that world with evil - but both my daughter and cousin had a visit from a woman - who looked like she was dressed in a nun's habit. My daughter was wide awake when she saw the woman in the corner of the room folding clothes and my cousin was in bed almost asleep when she saw the woman standing beside her Mom's side of the bed. Just watching her sleep. The next morning we checked one of the rooms and there was an over powering smell of stale cigarette smoke that wasn't there in prior evening. That was interesting as well since you are not allowed to smoke anywhere inside the Inn - it's posted all over the place with a $100 fine. None of us are smokers anyway - so this could have been a signal we had another visitor but not a viable one. :) We couldn't find anything on the history - just that there has been some experiences with coffee makers and light switches going on and off. The Inn itself, for me, is what you would expect. An old house converted into rooms - back in the day people were smaller so the rooms are small - but once again we expected that. We loved the furnishings and some really thoughtful touches like make-up wipes and Q-tips in the bathrooms. We loved the quaintness of the Inn and would definitely stay there again. Maybe I should have known it wasn't going to be an ideal stay when the person that checked me in said "We've only got Room 2 available..." Room 2 in on the 2nd floor, directly above the bar. Needless to say, there was no sleeping until a bit after 1AM. Perhaps a little warning could have been stated, like, 'Room 2 can be a bit noisy in the evenings'... Anyways, Room 2 was ok, but definitely needs work - lamps with dead bulbs, peeling wallpaper, paint cans stored in the closet... A plus, since the bathroom was located outside the room down the hallway, were the robes that were provided. It also has a seperate sitting room, with a miniature TV. Perhaps the 3rd floor is better, given it's farther from the downstairs action, but avoid the 2nd floor (and... Room 2!) read more

Wow, What a great experience! From the moment we walked in, we where treated like family. Our waiter, Jim was phenomenal. He was attentive and he knew the menu extremely well. Ate dinner here tonight and it was beyond awful. This is the third time I've eaten here. The other times were, ehh, not awful, not great, but tonight was a different story. I went with my family, hoping for a nice night out, and instead had the worst meal of our vacation. My dad got the lobster special described as "a lobster cooked out of the shell and mixed with linguine...". I got the prime rib and my mom the lamb. The lobster came out and it was a couple of over cooked claws that were dry and the "light parmesan sauce" smelled overpowering and tasted bad. When we asked the waiter about where the rest of the lobster was instead of saying he'd talk to the chef or being polite in any way he became defensive and rude saying, "I never said you'd get a whole lobster," and then walked off into the kitchen and didn't check back in again except when it was time to put the check on the table. He didn't send over the host or offer to take it off the bill. My dad tried to eat a little of the pasta. A few minutes later the bus person came and asked if we were all done. My dad sent back the pasta and the lobster uneaten. In the meantime, my mom's lamb was pure fat and my prime rib was the thinest slice I had ever had and the cut was all nerve. I had the hardest time cutting through it and could only eat about 1/2. The inside of the popover that wasn't burnt was tasty. Burning the popovers really seems to be their thing. The vegetable were so small a serving that the 6 green beans and single baby carrot really might as well not have been there at all. On the way out we mentioned to the host how disappointing the meal was. Also when you describe a special as a lobster cooked out of the shell it should be a lobster. What they have is lobster pieces and the pieces they did have were inedible. At least the host was friendly and kind enough to apologize. But it still wouldn't be enough for me to give this place another chance. And now since arriving back to the hotel both of my parents have been ill. Do NOT eat here!!!! read more

Never going back Stopped in for dinner & cocktails at the bar and met newlyweds from CT. We struck up a conversation about their wedding a few days prior. They were gleaming & even showed us some photos. We then were joined by a local chef and we all started talking about vaccines & mandates in different states. At that point we were told by the bartender (who was also an owner) to end the conversation as politics was not permitted to be spoken. He abruptly left the bar and we went on chatting until a second bartender came to tell us to end the conversation.. We stopped our vaccine talk & our conversation took at turn to "the noChild gets left behind act" which then made the hostess come behind the bar to tell us once again politics was not permitted to be spoken. So we paid our check left a nice tip, which we regret and left. We stayed here this past weekend (07.16.2016) at the Inn, as well as having dinner here. We visited once two years ago for dinner and we were so impressed we thought we would try staying at the Inn as well. We were not disappointed. The Inn itself dates back to 1833, so expect that all the floors may not be even or that the doors may not close correctly. This place is an antique and we appreciate such things. We had room six, which is awesome for the ocean view and the livingroom (two room suite). The bed was very comfortable and the Keruig, refrigerator and A/C in both rooms were very nice touches. I did notice the shower sill could have used two screws and some torn wallpaper spots in odd and not totally noticeable places, some trim that could have used a touch up. Those kinds of things don't bother me in general. To me it's about the character of these older Inns. Certain rooms are dog friendly but you would not know it. The place is clean throughout. The restaurant stands for itself. This is upscale dining, not the 99. It's in the $20+ range per person but you will not be disappointed. Frankly I have no idea what some of these reviews are talking about, we've had fantastic service every single time and the food is five star although I do think the portions could be larger. For me on the nights we ate there it was perfect for me for that night. The menu is not huge, which is what you look for because that means they do less therefore they do them better. They also have an excellent wine list and the waitress staff is completely knowledgeable about it. My first pick is always Abalonia but this place is fantastic. Went here for dinner the other evening and it was so-so. The place is very dated. Server was friendly. My husband had stuffed lobster and I had lobster pasta. Entrees were decent. I really wanted to like this place. It has a great atmosphere and the wait staff is incredibly friendly. However the dinners we waited over an hour for where the worst I've ever had. Whoever the chef is should be fired on the spot. The portions were so small the couldn't be considered appetizers in any other place, and everything was over cooked. Absolutely the worst restaurant experience. The waitress had absolutely no personality. The fish smelt like ammonia! The chicken parm was the worst . The management lacked professionalism by coming over and telling us the fish is brought in fresh daily. Was it left out then? I don't know. There was a party of 6 at our table and everyone of them smelt the ammonia. So I think just an apology would have been sufficient. I didn't want anything else because anything that comes out of a restaurant kitchen that's bad is a huge red flag for me! We eat out a lot and a few of us had a lot of experience in the restaurant business. To sum this up my 21 year old Son who had the chicken parm got sick, my Father in law who had the fish and chips got sick and My Mother who had the fish and chips was also sick. There are different dining rooms with some nicer than others considering the age of the building. The food is meh. My young man and I were looking for anything that was still open after the season and happened upon the Old Village Inn. I had been exploring the Main Street and reading the menu, spied Prime Rib with popover (an American version of Yorkshire pudding) and horseradish sauce. First, the restaurant portion of the Inn is unique in that it has several different seating options. We were seated in a cozy room with dark paneling--just right for prime rib. It is just a shame for others that the rear "garden" rooms really only have a view of a parking lot. Our service was perfectly fine. A tiny detail that I appreciate: when the servers recite the specials, they make sure to include the prices. So many other places forget that little piece of information, putting the customer in the awkward position of having to ask. The prime rib was perfectly prepared for both of our orders. Now, prime rib is prepared well in advance, of course, so I was happy that they were able to accommodate my medium rare (more rare) and my young man's medium request. Of course, we were there early, about five minutes after they opened for dinner. The popover was a little less flaky and a bit more chewy then I would have liked, but the challenge of cooking a perfect popover for one dish on the menu is slightly problematic. I understand that and I was just happy to have the opportunity to eat my prime rib with something that resembled Yorkshire pudding. The vegetables and potatoes were fine, but are usually an afterthought when accompanying a fine piece of meat. After several days in Maine, I was up to my eyeballs with lobster and seafood (which I adore and look forward to eating when I arrive). I was just happy to find a proper beef option. We decided to skip the desserts, as we had picked up a chocolate cake at the bakery When Pigs Fly near Kittery. The selection looked fine, but nothing too imaginative or special. read more

My favorite place for dinner in Maine. We have a seasonal cottage and we always make it a point to go here for dinner. Reservations are a plus! And they are very accurate with the reservations. We have never had to wait for our table. Service is spot on, they are very attentive and don't rush you out. Drinks are delish! Meals are fantastic! I try to order something different every time we go but I always end up with the lobster special for the day. Some of the wonderful meals we have had are the lobster specials, prime rib, chicken Marsala, filet & ravioli. Old Village Inn is my top favorites in Ogunquit. You won't be disappointed. read more

We had the most amazing stay here! The food was beyond excellent - full of flavor and clearly prepared with care and attention to detail. Our room was cozy and clean, and the staff was so friendly and welcoming. Because the inn is right on main street we were only a few minutes walk from cute shops, lovely bakeries, and the beach! Went for dinner this evening and it was dreadful. Lobster bisque and clam chowder was very good and it went downhill after that. The baked stuffed shrimp was cooked to death. The worse I have ever had. The waiter handed me a steak knife. I was like, what the heck is this for?? I found out. Tough as shoe leather. Chicken piccata was flavorless. The duck was borderline. We have been coming to Ogunquit for 27 years and tonight we had the best meal that either of us can remember. The OVI is a beautiful quintessential Maine seaside Inn steeped in history and charm. Dean and Marsha, the owners and innkeepers, as well as the front end host and waitstaff, make everyone feel at home. Our meal was paced perfectly from appetizer to dessert and the quality of every course was impeccable. The value for the money is unmatched in the area. We've been coming to Ogunquit Maine for many years and never eaten here. We almost always vacation during the off season and have our favorite places which we seldom stray from. Our regular place was closed for the month of January so we decided to make reservations here. Absolutely delicious and very affordable for what you get. Service is impeccable and the food was perfect. We are foodies and have no problem picking who chose the best dish at dinner. All four meals were superb and could not decide whose was better. The atmosphere is great and for being a large place the rooms are broken up so it feels quaint and cozy. This is now on the top three list of best places to eat in Ogunquit. Just so you all know the other two places we eat at are Roost and Five-O. Five-O was closed. read more

We chose the Old Village Inn restaurant for our one night in Ogunquit based on Yelp reviews. We were so disappointed. It's not awful, but it's decidedly mediocre. Someone gives you one slice of bread if you ask for it; no one refills water glasses or asks if you'd like a second glass of wine; the chowder and entrees were lukewarm on delivery. Bartender/Waiter was aloof and condescending repeated wine list s if we were mentally challenged or spoke some foreign language. Ordered Lasagna wife ordered roast beef sandwich au jus. Lasagna must have been left over from last summer as was dry and well dreadful (it was deleted from bill as it should have been.) I'm still wondering what on earth the guy at our hotel was thinking with this referral. DON'T GO. When we arrived I was wondering why the place wasn't hopping at peak dinner hour like many other establishments....well I learned why based on my own experience: -Hostess was friendly and seated us promptly at a great seat in the window. -We waited for at least 10 minutes for someone to arrived to take drink order, then another 10 minutes for the drinks to arrive, by which time we memorized the menu. -We placed order and appetizer did arrive in good timing. Stuffed mushrooms. More cheese and grease than stuffing. Meh. -I ordered the roast duck which came with rice. Duck was gummy, suspiciously so perhaps and rather flavorless. Sauce on duck was what tasted like heated raspberry jam with water. It seemed scorched. Rice tasted like it had been held way too long at too high a temp. Greenbeans were the highlight. Nothing creative about it. -Dining mate had beef something. Smothered in canned beef gravy and onions and really brown mushrooms. Nasty looking. He had same side dishes. The place was generally outdated in decor, carpets dirty, and service aside from hostess was slow without excuse. Out of all the great dining options in Ogunquit THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM! I've never stayed at the Inn itself, but I have dined at the restaurant and have had great meals both times. The French Onion soup is delicious, but my favorite meal is the Mushroom Ravioli with the added Lobster - so good! I can't believe no one has commented on the extremely overpowering odor of cat urine? taking over the entire place. We wanted to grab a few apps before heading across the street to see a movie and I have wanted to give this place a try. We almost turned around as soon as the odor hit us, but we unfortunately got seated right away so no time to retreat. The hostess brought us to the back dining room and I asked about the pub menu before she left. No only dining room , so she moved us into bar area and we opted for the room by the street, where the sun was baking the odor into, for us, unbearable atmosphere. We got up and walked out. After eating in a few of the old stand by restaurants we decided to give it a go here. We must say what a nice surprise, all the little things the other places missed. Table clothes, cloth napkins, water served at the table, warm bread and butter, just to name a few things. The food was great and included a potato and vegetable. It was Thanksgiving weekend and we rolled into town on Saturday afternoon. We hadn't made reservations we were lazy and arrogant. We drove into town and saw the vacancy sign at that Old Village Inn and pulled over. We had hoped they had a vacancy, we had called but never got an answer or return call. We checked in and got not a room but a suite. The deal was good, really good. The place is super funky, totally thrift shop chic. The place is filled with furniture that is totally thrift shop but the BEST thrift shop finds, a thrift shop shoppers wet dream! The room was super warm and the water in the shower was super hot! We had a view of the ocean from out private balcony in an old house, how cool is that? The only thing I did not like was the bartender at the bar. Bad energy oozes from this man. He needs to find another profession, it was like Faulty Towers. I would go back again in an isntant just wouldn't have a drink at the bar. read more

If you have a big appetite this is not the place to go if food is delicious depending on what you order. I would stay away from the rubber lobster but the scallops are amazing. Portions are for kids pricey but doable I've stayed here and eat here over the past couple years and it seems every year that I come the portions get smaller the rooms are a little bit it outdated but I always clean and tidy smells a refreshing when you open the door to the room. If you want to inexpensive place to stay this is it with the rustic charm the bar is slamming at night with lots of fun and jokes depending who is bartending if you want them strong you come in. read more

We had dinner here on a Friday night. We ate in the bar area. The bar is cozy - friendly chatter among regulars. The service was abrupt - borderline rude. We ordered the fried green beans - definitely a frozen batch from Costco. The lobster bisque was OK - a few chunks of lobster. The lobster taco's were weird - lobster meat on soft taco shells with shredded cheese and lettuce with a side of nachos and a package of sour cream. Lobster nacho's is probably a better description. I would have a drink at the bar next time but I would not return for a meal. read more
