SO good. My favorite items on the menu are the general tso + the churro with pandan cream. The churros are so good I will sometimes order just the churros as takeaway. Old Thousand is kind of like fancy Chinese takeout, but with real ingredients that don't make you sick. Old Thousand is a great neighborhood gem in East Austin! They have unique, upscale Chinese food, a great happy hour, and a fun environment that is perfect for a date night or night out with friends. I'm personally a huge fan of their happy time menu which has $7 apps, $7 cocktails, and $7 wine from 5-6:30pm weekdays. Everything I have ordered has been delicious, but my favorite dishes are the mala fried chicken, the kung pao cauliflower, eggplant, and the Char Siu. I love that the dishes are shareable because it allows you to try a good selection of their menu. Had a really bad experience here. They need to for sure get it together. We waited 20 minutes on a reservation time that was pre set. They had 5 mixed drinks on the menu but before 8pm had run out of all mixed drinks except one. It was so disorganized and took so long that we asked them to just box our food so we could leave. Then it took nearly 30 minutes for them to just box our food. We live on the East side of Austin and we won't be back. There are just too many great restaurants on this side of town getting it right. I am going to attach Instagram messages I sent to them- with no response. So here I am. Friday night I went there (we had a 5pm reservation) with a friend I haven't seen in years. We ordered drinks and food--close to $100 worth. At 6:23, we were told we had a limit to how long we could be there. They mentioned we were told this when the reservation was made (I pulled up my resy, and no where was it indicated that we had a time limit). We came an hour before closing and it was still packed and luckily our friend made reservations online so we were seated right away. This place is definitely great for groups where there are shareable plates but with that being said, it's small portions. The price is pretty steep for what you get. I was pretty excited to try this place based on existing reviews. The menu and photos looked like the food would be authentic and quite divine. The restaurant looked trendy and high-end. To my avail, the food was disappointing; authenticity was absolutely not there and it was very pricey. Perhaps I had misinterpret or misread that this would be an authentic Chinese cookery and had the wrong expectations. Such expectations that would spoil my first impression. We had roasted cauliflower that I happen to know that the sauce wasn't that creative. I seems like the Thai Chili Sweet and Sour Sauce that comes out of the bottle. We also had Hot and Sour Soup that was incredibly salty and room temperature (Definitely do NOT recommend the Hot and Sour Soup). The Scallion Pancake with the Sweet Chili Chutney was the BEST. Crispy and flaky pancake and sweet and crunchy sweet chili sauce. For entree we shared a nice fresh Vegetarian Dan Dan Noodle Dish that was small in portion but very flavorful and pleasant with a hardy runny egg sauce. The Dan Dan Noodles definitely saved the restaurant from a harsh opinion. It had freshly pulled noodles that were soft yet springy. I simply wish that an authentic Asian restaurant would finally get featured in an upscale restaurant in Austin. My friends and I went here for dinner on a Wednesday night. For a weeknight, it was still kind of busy. We got a table quickly, but it was the last open table at that time. They use the system where you scan the QR code on the table and do all of your ordering and paying online. I'm not the biggest fan of this system because I like to interact with servers and get recommendations or ask questions, but it was quite efficient. Also, a server did come over at one point to see if we had any questions about the menu so that was appreciated. I got the Tiger cocktail because it was made with Baijiu and I've never had that before. It turned out to be great, sweet and not too strong. For an appetizer we got the veggie egg rolls which come with a spicy dipping sauce. I highly recommend. For entrees, I got the general Tso's chicken and my friends got the brisket fried rice. Both were absolutely delicious and were very healthy portion sizes, I had to take the rest of mine home. Don't expect any individual service any longer at this restaurant. They have moved to counter service food service. You'll do all the ordering by yourself on your phone and pay on your phone. All they do is run the food out to your table then stop by after and ask how was everything. The online payment will default to a 20% tip, of course. This restaurant was once one of my favorites and now it's become a place where they have taken the servers out of the mix, taken the "middle man out" per one of the last servers there and taken the restaurant experience down to just eating and paying. I'm glad that this is an asian fusion restaurant that's more asian than it is fusion. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of flavor in everything that my family and I ordered. The brisket fried rice was so yummy. The green beans were so unique, really enjoyed the sauce that they cooked it in! Definitely get the char siu and the pork belly ribs! The ribs are on the specials menu, just FYI. The pork dishes were all tender and juicy I made reservations for a weekend dinner and you can probably get away without one. My new go-to Chinese(ish) restaurant! I moved to Austin from NYC a little over a year ago and have had a lot of trouble finding a Chinese restaurant here. I know Old Thousand is fusion, but I really appreciate that it's more "Chinese" than it is "fusion". We ordered the Cubano Spring Roll, Chili Wonton, xiaolongbao, and Brisket Fried Rice. It was definitely too much food, but I haven't had decent Chinese food in a while, so I got really excited. I also got a French Seven-Tea-Five, which was crisp and sweet without being too sweet. My favorite was the Brisket Fried Rice. I loved that they still included Chinese sausages, while adding a little Texas twist via brisket. The XLB was a close second, even though I found them to be too dough-y for my liking. They still hit the spot and brought back fond memories from my childhood. While I wouldn't bring my grandma here, I'll definitely bring friends in the future! read more

As I have mentioned before, customer service goes a long way and will get you that awesome review! This wasn't my first (or last) time I've been to Old Thousand in east Austin. This time, I took a couple of my best friends to visit this spot to hit up because I know it will not let me down. We were seated at the bar since all the tables were "reserved" (which they may have been reserved ahead of time, but when we got there when it opened, it was dead empty). But I couldn't really complain, we were greeted and sat right away. Let's dive into the food. This go around, we ordered the brisket fried rice. Plentiful, abundant, and enough to fill 3 people's stomaches... can't complain about that. The Mongolian beef was tender, and covered in red onions. The rice had some cumin type seasoning on it that helped transform ordinary steamed rice into something more. Lastly, the cha-shu or pork belly, closed the show with its fantastic display on a wood board. The bao bun, cucumbers, cilantro, and onions only enhance the belly which makes it so much harder to not just inhale it and get it into my belly faster! Overall, this place is great for small groups and entertaining guests. I love the fact that they display and describe the food when they drop it off to you. What a pleasure it was to be at Old Thousand for their monthly vegan night! They always have vegan options, but they have a lot more on the first Tuesday of each month. The atmosphere is pretty spot on for me - just a notch past completely casual into upscale, but not very far! The service was excellent. Knowledgeable servers and plenty of help whenever you need it, but not overpowering. Some of my favorite dishes were the Singapore Noodles, Marinated Asian Pear, Green Beans, and the Coconut Panna Cotta. We had a lot of food, and I was truly impressed with each dish. It felt elevated to fine dining at times, but still reasonably priced and with good portions. If I had to choose one dish to rule them all, it's those Green Beans. I'm not sure if I'd do take out here, part of the fun was being at the restaurant. It was quite beautiful inside. But yeah, I may just have to come monthly for those vegan goodies! read more

And while what I'm actually looking for is the greasy takeout I'm used to in the Northeast, Old Thousand is a legit GOOD Chinese food place (no greasy takeout here, I'm still looking!) that I will be returning to again and again and recommending to friends. Skip PF. Chang's. You'll find way better flavors and more authenticity for the same general price range. I first came to Old Thousand as a guest to their Chinese New Year meal (I got a complimentary meal because I am a food blogger) and even my seafood-hating husband gobbled up the five course meal despite it being heavy on the seafood. I'd been meaning to return, so one night my husband and I made our way to East 11th to order from their regular menu, using our own wallet. We were blown away. I loved every bite of our meal and I've been thinking about it ever since. We each had a drink--I got an Old Fashioned, he got a beer--and got the scallion pancakes as an appetizer. They were deliciously crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and came with a tasty and tangy sauce. We shared two main courses as well, the Orange Chicken and the Pineapple Beef. Both were incredible! The Orange Chicken is NOT your standard food-court fare, it's delicate and flavorful and pairs perfectly with the jasmine rice. And the beef... oh goodness this is one of my favorite dishes of all time. The beef is crispy but not tough, the sauce is amazing, the pineapple adds a hint of sweetness but there's some spice going on in there too. We did have an issue with our check... the server accidentally served our bill to the table next to ours, and vice versa, and the other table left and paid our tab. The server assured us that our bill was actually cheaper by a few bucks, but we found it pretty weird. Eater beware -- anyone coming for a meal at all resembling authentic Chinese food (as I was, after one too many Austin taco trucks) will leave sad and a little confused. Since when is "fusion" code for manipulated beyond recognition? Dishes named after classic Chinese foods (e.g. scallion pancakes) barely resemble their original versions. Dim sum carts display a perplexing hodgepodge of dishes not at all related to Canto cuisine (including a $4 version of spicy cabbage often served free at Sichuan restaurants). Our waiter frowned when we said "mala" and clarified that we wanted the "MUHluh" fried chicken. And our request for a bowl of plain rice was met with surprise and an up-charge. The kitschy decor and simulacratic menu aside, the food was fine -- flavorful albeit muddled. We'd heard so many recommendations from friends and The Statesman so took no time ordering the pickles, Chongqing chicken, kung pao cauliflower, and Pineapple beef. Pickles - perfectly sour and so good! Gotta eat your fermented veggies :) Chongqing chicken - these are addictive! I couldn't stop popping them. I could easily eat these over and over again. Definitely my go-to dish! They're tart, salty, spicy and simply delish! Kung Pao Cauliflower - not as spicy as I thought they might be. I'm a sucker for the peanuts and the sauce both of which made this dish! Pineapple beef - I don't go for sweet fruit or ingredients in my main dish but we heard this one was good. The only flaw with this place is that it is rather expensive. As of posting it's somewhere in the neighborhood of $13 cocktails and sub-$20 mains, plus apps you can rapidly end up in $100 territory. The food is great. But is it THAT good? I had hot dumplings - perfectly spicy and maybe a hint of Thai flavor? Kung Pao cauliflower - spicy, wonderful, cauliflower was maybe a touch firm and could use a hint more fry. Brisket fried rice with Chinese sausage - absolutely amazing, worth going out of your way for. Broccoli beef - solid grilled flavor. The cocktails were absolutely perfect. Service was kind and at a decent pace. Overall flavor was just a hint too "Asian fusion" for me when I'd like a hint more authentic Chinese. If the place was either just that little bit more special (more authentically Chinese flavor) or just that little bit more casual (the brisket rice would be an amazing lunch special) this would be a true gem. Went in recently for dinner on a Monday night, nice decor and ambiance. My husband and I started with a round of Old Thousands, which were perfectly made. To start we split the Veggie Egg Roll and Green Beans. The egg roll wrapper was a little thick for my taste, but the filling was tasty. The Green Beans were our favorite dish of the night - definitely a must - and the hot mustard vinaigrette it's served with you end up dipping everything in it!! For mains we split the Brisket Fried Rice (a staple dish) and the General Tso's Chicken which was a perfect balance of crispy and saucy. Such a fun and memorable dining experience! First of all when you walk in you can't help but laugh at the art of the panda bear with a crown on its head paying homage to Biggie! Also they were playing unedited 90s-2000s hip hop, which brought back a nostalgia to my childhood and made the wait for our table enjoyable; something I've never said before! Now to the food! Walking in, I was loving the decor! The panda portrait and the lanterns - it all looked great. It took about 10 minutes until someone came to our table to get our drink order. The person who took our drink order was not even our server. I see from a distance (another 5 minutes later) that the hostess calls the manager to let him know that our server hasn't even stopped by our table yet so he comes to take our food order. It was not until after we put in our food order was when our server stopped by the table to check in... Really? After 20 minutes? The service was terrible. I'm not sure why service was so awful. The food was just okay. The bok choy had a very bland flavor - it could use more seasoning. Everything here screams trendy east Austin fused with traditional Chinese decor. I love how modern the interior seating is but how true they've stayed to the "hole in the wall" type wall paper! It fuses what a traditional hole in the wall Chinese restaurant would be decked out in with some class, brilliant! Aside from the decor every single dish is flavorful, the sauces make each dish and there's a lot of care to make sure everyone is happy with the food placed on the table. This has been somewhere I've been anticipating on trying since David said he was coming out with a restaurant with some colleagues. The Kung pao cauliflower is a must,noodles nest combines a complexity of flavors with crunchy texture and seafood, the Szechuan chili wontons are delicate and flavorful, and the jelly fish salad is light and refreshing. Each dish had a different flavor profile, if I had a bigger stomach I'd get everything! We also got the pork ribs (omg so tender) and the clay pot! The cocktail menu is superb,I highly recommend the old thousand! Yes it does have bourbon but you can taste all of the flavor notes, and if you want to try something different I recommend the killing me softly drink with dill as garnish. Wish the extra ones were less than a dollar each. *Sesame Balls were an unexpected runner up for the night. highly recommended, these are definitely not the typical sesame ball. There is something they do that makes the consistency in the red bean paste warmer, creamier, and a more comforting mouthful of dessert! This is the epitome of Upscale Asian Fusion. The dishes are pretty straightforward in that the menu tells you exactly what you will be getting. Most highlight a single or a few ingredients, so side dish ordering is recommended. Anything else, including buns or rice, is extra. That being said, it can add up. And prices are already a little on the high side. Even for special occasions, the food ranged from good to excellent- but still nothing I would deem phenomenal. Uniqueness is definitely a factor; a reason to at least try this place- but for the above stated reasons, return visits would be reserved for showing friends. read more
