You order yourself on the phone, they drop the food and drinks off and that's about it. Never had anyone come ask if we enjoyed the food or how our experience. In my opinion, hands down the best item in the menu is the chanquo chicken. It is absolutely awesome and have been here multiple times and every-time my friends say that is their favorite. Hmmm! I don't know what to feel about old thousand. In some ways, I'm excited that chinese fusion is so hip in Austin; but per usual - the clientele (homogenous and seemingly wealthy) tells a lot about the food they're serving and how it's being served. I don't know why but old thousand feels a bit exploitative and while I thought the food was 'okay' - I don't think I'd plug it into my dinner playlist. We had the brisket fried rice, the walnut honey shrimp, the hot and sour soup, the mala chicken and the sautéed green beans. I absolutely hated the brisket fried rice and was a bit shocked that it's a fan favorite. The brisket is extremely dry and the dish overly salty. The hot and sour soup tasted wildly different then what I'm use to (I lived in taiwan for a stint). I did really enjoy the mala chicken and sautéed green bean. Typically, when I try fusion restaurants - i try to keep an open mind and in fact - get super excited when a restaurant is able to bring out foods and flavors from various cultures. I've been here twice, why? Because I like the vibe. Meaning, I like the restaurant. And there's a bar too - nice (not many Chinese places can claim to have a bar in town). But the food... geez, beware of the spiciness of the food. If I was rating the food base on the appropriate spiciness level, this would easily be a one star review. But I'm giving it four stars anyways because the quality of the food is really great - I'm just needing to remind them to make it extremely mild if the standard is fire-hot. I'm just suspecting that someone who is at the helm of the kitchen had his tongue burnt from eating too spicy food for far too long, unfortunately. I'd give this place another try. This is a great place for a spontaneous weeknight dare, and the happy hour drinks were pretty good. The orange chicken and the xiao mian were generously portioned (perfect for sharing) and packed with flavor. They used quality ingredients, and the venue felt intimate and upscale. While the server was obviously trying and apologized for the incident, I removed one star because we never received the appetizer that we ordered. I really wanted to like this place. We dined here twice before I made my final opinion. I'm just not that in to it. I like the music, the quirky decor and the colorful staff. The 1st experience involved us having the dim sum. I was not thrilled with the small menu of options offered during this time. All the items I wanted to try were on the dinner menu. I ordered hot tea and they explained to me they were currently out of tea. We settled on the brisket fried rice and it was tasty and a little spicy. No where on the menu does it mention this fact. We then decided to try the veggie fried rice and found it to be flavorful with a couple of surprise elements. At this point we made the decision to leave and come back for dinner another night. About a week later we arrived for dinner. Ordered hot tea and they were still out of tea. Seriously they didn't have tea yet again. This time we tried a few items off the happy hour menu. Then moved on to the main courses. The star of the show was the sliced pork served with the steamed buns. Everything else was okay and not as appealing. I would come back for the pork! I recommend checking out the menu before you go because while the food is good, it is relatively limited compared to other Chinese spots in the city. Service was good too. Currently this is the only location doing dine-in (for dinner only). There's also outdoor sidewalk seating available. I enjoyed every dish that I tried but my standout fav was the Chicken & Waffles (weekend special). It's the same Mala chicken on the menu but comes with egg waffle pieces with spiced butter & syrup. It hits all of the right notes, being savory, sweet with a small kick of spice. (Mala is more of a tingly feeling vs actual spice from chilis). Honestly the portion sizes were right for the brisket fried rice and chicken + waffles. The rice is pretty hefty with the generous chunks of brisket. They offer 2-hour parking validation. We ordered the chili wontons, the mala chicken and the brisket fried rice. Every single item was flavorful, and the portions are generous enough. I do not think the appetizers that we picked were a good choice together because they were both extremely spicy which I love but needed some relief to really enjoy the food more. The drink I ordered was spicy too so that definitely did not help. I have never been happier than when I saw our waitress approach us with the brisket fried rice. We had a wait a while for both our drinks and food, but it is to be expected on a Saturday night and a full restaurant. The music was loud, but they were all good jams so I wouldn't change a thing. We called ahead for take-out and still ended up waiting for 20 mins or more during the late afternoon. It didn't help my experience that the parking spot was angled down so that the concrete parking strip at the front of the spot caught my front spoiler/lip.
