The server did mention it was "family style", but admitted the portions were not crazy big. I kind of wish they wouldn't say that since, then, I felt I had to share mine...which wouldn't have been terrible except mine was the only vegetarian option at the table (so everyone got to eat my food, but I couldn't eat theirs) & I was so hungry. I had the orange tofu. The tofu was grilled perfectly. The prices were a little high, but similar to most nicer Austin options. I had to eat Taco Bell later in the evening though because of the "family style" advertisement. Don't believe it. It's just a regular amount of food & only share if you want to. Another awesome old East Austin find, this place serves a short but sweet menu of (mostly) reimagined Chinese dishes as well as an impressive bar service including some signature cocktails, although their menu needs to be updated; the cocktail I originally chose was no longer available. The one I did end up with, Old Thousand G&T (with no cucumber) was delicious and well made. My wife and I opted to share the hot and sour soup to start, and it was one of the best examples of the classic that I've ever had. It was actually both hot AND sour, which, in my travels, is a bit novel, because I've rarely had the "sour" part. It was super delicious, with plenty of interest from tofu, mushrooms, and shoots, and had a nice heat. Even better, the Kung Pao sprouts, which netted us a generous bowl of roasted sprouts in a dark, sweet and savory sauce with lots of peanuts for picking out with the chop sticks one by one :) We gobbled this dish up, and almost wished for more. For the main course, we chose the brisket fried rice, as it's apparently one their true signature dishes. Made with house smoked brisket, it was definitely a generous portion, but suffered a bit from being a little plain (aside from the brisket) and a tad on the dry side. A bit of soy sauce livened it up. The ambiance is dark yet welcoming, and while we were nearly alone at our arrival time (7:30 on a Thursday evening), by the time we left, it was jumping with happy patrons. Also, the proportions were way off, there was so little tofu for the amount of rice and we had lots of rice leftover with nothing to eat it with. Portions were also very small, one entree is definitely not enough for one adult. So overall, you're paying $14-18 for mostly rice and a few pieces of tofu, and we were still hungry after finishing our meal. Service was horrible, our waiter came once to take our order after 20 minutes of us sitting without water and again to give us the check, no checking up on us in between, nor did she even hand us our food. One of the first things to point out is that I love the parking here! There's a lot in the back that just makes everything so easy. Secondly, although the food is a little on the pricey side, it's very delicious! The Chongqing favorite is one of favorites! Delicious! I've ordered takeout twice now and it's easily the best General Tso's Chicken I've had in a long time. Also ordered the green beans and the brussel sprouts, which were both great! So, I just started going down Thrillist's list of quintessential Austin experiences. Old Thousand's brisket fried rice was number one on the list, so I had to try it! It was really easy to make a reservation online, so we got seated immediately once we arrived, which was nice. We had the Kung Pao Brussels, the Chungkin (???) Chicken, the brisket fried rice and some drinks. The restaurant itself is pretty cute, if a little loud. Ordering was a bit confusing since it wasn't super clear when the server would be coming versus if we were supposed to order via QR code. I mean, it was fine. We did both, in the end. So, the important stuff. The Brisket Fried Rice was unique and pretty fine. It was good enough and the tiny pieces of meat were very flavorful. It was also weirdly dry, so adding ponzu sauce made it surprisingly delicious. The chicken was amazing! Perfectly fried and flavorful. Could not stop eating it. And the Brussels were good, though I'd probably try the green beans instead. The portions were pretty good, so be prepared to eat family-style! I finally made it to Old Thousand! First of all, it is so freaking cute inside. I have to come back during non-Covid times so I can be a nerd and take some selfies. They were playing old school rap jams that we were all nostalgic for and set the mood for some seriously great food. The chili dumplings were a favorite for me! Warning: they are fairly spicy. My friends couldn't handle them, but that meant there were more for me. The Kung Pao cauliflower was great too. It was a pretty good portion. If you're vegan, it would make a decent sized meal for you. The highlight of the meal was the lobster fried rice. I think it might only be on the menu occasionally, so if it's available, just get it! The lobster was cooked perfectly. We could cut it with a fork and it was so buttery. One thing to keep in mind is they will be bringing out dishes as they are ready rather than coursing them out.
