A favorite my family is German so this brings back great memories of sauerkraut and German meals as a child.

This place has some really awesome pork chops and sauerkraut! I didn't realize my meal wasn't completely German food til my husband told me I was just eating my favorite foods on a plate they serve. Lol So, the German sauerkraut was VERY DELICIOUS. My hubs and my son ordered their meals and loved them too. I forgot what they ordered but they finished their meals pretty quickly! lol My youngest kids ordered the mini chicken schnitzels kids meal, which came with fries and apple sauce. They also ate their food pretty quickly. So I would have to say the food here is pretty awesome for my whole fam to devour our meals! Great job on food guys! We were seated in the back left corner of the restaurant that also had a puck game...2+ players we believe. We didn't know the rules but the kids figured out how to play it anyway. Made points similar to corn hole rules. It worked out pretty nicely. And they couldn't resist playing with that sand box. So much sand. Anyway, it's pretty loud and crowded. The waiters and waitresses did a great job keeping up with everyone's orders and continually checking if we needed anything at our tables. Overall great place to eat and hangout! Had the schnitzel cordon bleu and the jagerschnitzel. Both were delicious. We sat in the beer garden, which is now an enclosed patio and was heated, but you might want to take a sweater. A lot of great energy on out there. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Enjoy! read more

Bottom Line: The Old Stein Inn is a German experience that doesn't disappoint - great food, amazing desserts, plenty of beer on tap and German charm. On Saturday night I put on my best dirndl and headed into the depths of the Edgewater for a night of fun at The Old Stein Inn. I was expecting it to be an entertaining night with a delicious meal but I got so much more at this German gem. I've never been to Germany so I can't authentically speak to the authenticity of this place, but it felt very German inclusive of German accents from the staff, a lovely accordion player and lots of wurst. When in German, do as the Germans do . . . so I started with bier and lots of it. A flight of light German beers, a flight of dark German beers and some Lindemans Framboise Raspberry Lambic for good measure. For food I had some of the soft pretzel complete with three sauces, potato pancakes complimented by applesauce and a smokey, porky, bauernwurst sandwich. All of that was five-stars delicious The sandwich was actually served on a pretzel roll with sauerkraut (yum) and a side of fries which were awful. If I had been paying attention I would have requested some German Potato Salad or Spatzle instead because both of those potato dishes looked amazing. Even if you don't think you like German food or you are a vegetarian, don't dismiss The Old Stein Inn. I would have been happy with the beer, potatoes pancakes, pretzels and aaaa-mazing homemade desserts. Its a rare day I eat dessert after a dinner out but I could not resist it here. I had the Belgian waffle sundae - a fresh and perfectly crisp waffle, topped with ice cream, a nut brittle, chocolate sauce, butterscotch, and a cherry. So incredibly good and worth the calories. Overall, service here was good. We made a reservation ahead of time and the restaurant was able to accommodate our party of six either inside the restaurant or out in the bier garten. German food, done right! It's hard to find a good German restaurant down here. Well, it's hard to find ANY German places to be honest! The ones you do find are usually pretty good, at least to me, but I'm partial to the cuisine. However, great German grub is still an art form, and this place has it down to a tee. Let me also state that we went here MANY years ago (way before the fire) when this place was little more than a dirty biker bar. My dad remembers a very unpleasant experience the last time he had been, where we were all still hungry after we left (we cleaned our plates) and paid an unusually high cost for said disappointing meal. Now, I hate to say good things about bad events, but maybe the fire was a silver lining in disguise. The indoor dining area is very open now, with very high vaulted ceilings and warm inviting wooden benches and tables. They make up for the lost space with a comfortably big biergarten (Beer Garden, literally) out back. We were there in the mid-chill of Fall, and they had plenty of heaters set up outside. The guests seemed very comfortable out there, too! If I had to complain, and I'm not, it would be the noise level. It can still get a little loud inside, but not to a painful degree, and certainly not worth subtracting a star for. Still, thought I'd mention it (i.e. warn you if you're sensitive to sound). The food, though... oh man the food! I find it hard not to order the jaegerschnitzel every single time. The perfectly cooked cutlet is draped lovingly in a smoky, earthy, hearty, savory bacon-mushroom gravy, just the right amount. As with all of their schnitzels, you can choose between chicken, pork or veal, a nice feature on the schnitzel menu. They have a wurst menu, too, and their sausages are fresh, flavorful, and filling! The sides... perfectly done. Authentic, delicious, mouth-watering... They have great beer here, too. Mostly German, naturally, but how can you not like German beer?! Their selection is actually pretty varied, and they have a rotating 10th tap of a seasonal item. Usually really delicious, as well. Try the German Root Beer cocktail! It's one of the only ways I've enjoyed Jaegermeister, seriously. This is a great restaurant, and well worth the trip. I sincerely hope they keep up this level of commitment to the food, the beverages, and the service. This kind of quality will keep us as regular customers for many years to come. The Old Stein Inn is a really fun traditional German restaurant and beer garden. The food is authentic and very good. The outside beer garden has been remodeled to provide cover and heating. They also provide entertainment on the weekends. The service is always good and they check to make sure that you have everything you need. Liverwurst's are served with German toast and is very fresh. The Jägerschnitzel is very good and falls off the plate. The red cabbage and potato salad are both very tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

While I was visiting family in Severna Park we made a reservation here for 7:15. The restaurant is dramatically styled as a German inn or pub. Waitperson was very attentive. Great variety of draft and bottled beers. I ordered braised beef short ribs, spatzle and red cabbage. Portions were large, food was beautifully cooked and presented with a rich gravy. This place makes me so happy! We randomly stopped here a few years back, and remembered enjoying it a lot. We found ourselves back in the area and thinking of the Inn, so we stopped in. The staff was so friendly and relaxed while still being hospitable - they were even very kind to our two dogs. The food is on point, but the beer list is really where the Inn shines. After moving back to the states from Germany, I had resigned myself to "meh" German food and beer. Imagine my delight when I discovered the Old Stein Inn. When you pull up to the restaurant and walk in, you feel like you're walking into a inn somewhere outside of Munich. Request to sit outside if weather permits, because it's a wonderful atmosphere that again takes your imagination to thinking you're in a different country. The Owners have tried to create a beer garden ambiance, and they've achieved it without being cheesy or over the top. It's understated and to the point. Once you sit down, you'll notice a menu that has tons of delicious options for you to choose from. The starters at Old Stein Inn are enough for a meal, because they are so good. Every time I come here, I can't resist and I have to order several appetizers of the menu. My recommendations: the fried cheese curds, liverwurst, wurst plate, or the Bavarian soft pretzel. Honestly you can't make a wrong decision, even if you don't choose these. The fried cheese curds though, they are incredible. The cheese curds are coated in a delicious beer battered and then served to you hot and fresh right out of the deep fryer (#Amurica). Once you've engorged yourself on all their delicious appetizers, you now have to try one of the amazing main courses. They serve traditional German fare that meets the standards of most Germans, although I was told that the cabbage is nothing compared to the stuff back home. The schnitzel is a must get, if it's your first time eating here, get this. You have the option of chicken, pork, or veal I say go pork. The breading is perfect and it's pan fried to perfection so that it's not too crispy where it loses the juiciness. It comes with spaetzle, but ask them to give you kaesespaetzle instead (it's cheesy spaetzle), it's heavenly. The meal is enormous so you can save half for later if you want. If schnitzel is not your jam, opt for the Sauerbraten or the braised pork shank. The Sauerbraten is a rich slow braised (enormous) piece of short rib that's topped with a vinegar sauce, it's very German, and very very good. I didn't get to try the pork shank but it looked amazing. If you're going dessert, I'd recommend the apple cheesecake or apple strudel both are divine. Overall, Old Stein Inn rarely misses the mark, it's affordable prices, warm atmosphere, and easy accessibility makes it a favorite of mine. I've been here twice, and find it hard to believe that I didn't write a review the first time around! First time was two years ago for my boyfriend's 30th bday with 20 of our closest friends. Everyone loved it, but I did NOT love that they wouldn't split the bill more than 2 ways between all of us. This place feels great for a large group until you get to paying, when it takes an hour to sort everything out. Fast forward to a small family dinner here last night, and everything went so much smoother. They typically don't have much for vegetarians (you can make a meal of sides, if you really need to), but they did have seasonal fish options available if you do eat fish. The potato pancakes could've been warmer, but the cheese spaetzle was on point. The sauerbraten was so comforting, but I didn't like the potato dumplings that were more like mashed potatoes in dumpling form (I was just in Germany 2 months ago, so I have high expectations). The chicken shnitzle was flavorful, as was everything else our table got. Do not skip out on dessert!!! The waffle was our favorite, hands down. In second was the brownie with the bits of brittle sprinkled around the plate. Both were rich, and great for sharing. I wish I got photos, but I was too busy chowing down. Our one complaint (ok, 2) was that where we were seated by the bar downstairs was very loud and cold. read more

I'll start off by saying the food is always consistently O.K. It's very average, but still good and we always enjoy it. That all is fine, but the real problem that gives this place the 2 stars I'm giving it and that makes me never want to return is that the service generally always sucks. Every time we go, there is another definite drop in the level of service. It was really, really bad this past weekend. I'm not sure what the problem is, but to me it appears that they need to add additional servers during peak times. We seriously sat with our beer glasses empty for longer than they had beer IN them. The server just kept running around like she was going crazy, paying no attention to our table, not even taking a second to look over at us,and it isn't like we were hidden away in a corner, we were right in the middle of the room. It was ridiculous and infuriating. By the way, no bread appeared at our table, even after two attempts at asking for it. Of course, it appeared after we were completed our soup and salad courses. When the main courses were delivered to us (not by our server by the way), they did that thing that all unprofessional restaurants do where they say "Who gets the ________?" as they look around at everyone at the table waiting for a raised hand. God I hate that. I really, really do. Our server never reappeared during the entire meal, even to ask how we are doing. Glasses still went unfilled. By the way, no separate checks, which I completely don't get. So we had to end up sitting there at our table doing math. And you know me and math. What should have been a nice, relaxing evening ended up in only succeeded in being annoying. read more

The food here was amazing. We had various sausages in our plates and they were all done really well. Very generous side portions. I was never really a fan of German potato salad till I had this one! But the star if the show was the desserts. We got 2 to share: the apfelstrudel and the chocolate brownie German cake. The cake stole the show with the rich flavors and amazing pecan and coconut icing! Wanted to lick that plate clean. My only complaint was the noise level in the bier garten was loud and hard for the servers to here, but that was the customers and nothing the restaurant did. I love this place. There is nothing else like it around the DC area, let alone Edgewater. It's a true German restaurant with traditional food, a beautiful beer garden, great draught selection and all around nice atmosphere. First, on the beer...it is the only place I can find Franz Dunkle on draught which is a fantastic beer. They have a full draught selection and even more in bottles. Every time I'm here, which isn't that often, I talk about spending my next visit in the bier garden for several hours. Sitting outside at the long picnic tables, socializing with friends and meeting new ones. It is a European atmosphere you can't find many places. A beautiful Fall tradition! The food is authentic. On my last visit I tried some of the non-traditional fare which is a cross between local cuisine and German. The crab pretzel was incredible and the Muenster Cheese & Crab Suppe was some of the best bisque I've ever had. Worth a trip alone for a crock of this. When you get into the traditional German food, you won't be disappointed. I mean, it isn't going to blow your socks off (it's sausage, potatoes and kraut) but it is all very good. My favorite dish is the Rinder Rolladen, which you can only get during Oktoberfest. I had it as part of a sampler once, and now if it's on the menu, I always order it by itself. Delicious! The sandwiches are good, the salads are great, and the bar snacks can't be beat (try the potato pancakes! the best you've ever had). While it's a great place to go and spend several hours, if you can only stop in for a quick bite and a beer, that'll work also. read more

For the atmosphere and live music, I give this a 5! I only knocked it down a star because the vegetarian option they have on their menu was pretty flavorless. I won't let that stop me from coming again though because of how great the customer service and atmosphere is. We ordered the potato pancakes and applesauce and the fried pickles for appetizers and both were yummy! I like that the fried pickles were fried spears rather than the usual fried slices you get. I wish it came with ranch rather than mustard though (but I could've ordered that on the side myself). The potato pancakes were pretty greasy, but oh so yummy! And the applesauce had pieces of apples in it, it was delicious! I got the Gemüse Spätzle for my meal and the gemüse portion was just string beans, so pretty sad idea of fresh vegetables if you ask me. I guess they cook whatever vegetables they have on hand, but I didn't think that would mean just string beans. While the spätzle was yummy, it was pretty bland. Everyone else at the table got the Jägerschnitzel and they loved their food! I know you don't think vegetarian when you think of German food and that's why I didn't give this place 3 stars. So as a vegetarian, the food is worth 2 stars, but as a carnivore it's 5 stars. Everyone else got red cabbage with their spätzle and I think mine would've been much better if that came with my meal as well. I ended up ordering it on the side (for $4, by the way) to make my meal more edible. The red cabbage brought back so many memories of my times in Germany and it tasted truly authentic. So for authentic German food and music, this is the place to go! Just be wary if you are a vegetarian. And one more big shout out, they have lambic beer here! The food here was a real disappointment to me. German food is fairly simple but hearty fare, so it's not exactly easy to mess up. Freshness and quality ingredients are key to good examples. The warnings came early when I was determining my order. I noted that all the regular schnitzel formulations were offered in veal, pork, or chicken. I decided to go with a standard Wiener schnitzel but was then informed by the waitress that they don't normally serve veal because it was too expensive, so it was only available in pork or chicken. Alrighty then, gimme the "pork cutlet" then! Got the apps and main course -- everything was overcooked and had all hints of freshness sapped out of the dishes. The red cabbage and other sides were mushy and not very tasteful. I doubt my pork cutlet was pounded out at all, so it really was just a thick hunk of meat. On the positive side, the beer was good. Though honestly I'd stick with the more popular types rather than skimming the depths of their offerings. I tried the Kolsch on draft and it wasn't exactly snappy on my tongue. read more

I have been a patron of Old Stein since before the big fire. Since I live up near BWI I do not go there very often. The last time we went, the food was not very good, but I thought we would give the Old Stein another chance, Up on arrival, I asked for a table in the Biergarten and the guy who took me out there tried to seat me at a tiny two top even though there was very few in the garden. I would say about 20 normal tables were vacant. He told me they had reservations. (They were still vacant after we ate and were leaving) It was pouring rain so I bet they stayed that way. We both got Jägerschnitzel and some potato pancakes for an appetizer. Well, the food was not as bad as the last time, It got worse, The potato pancakes were exactly like what Chick Fillet serves for breakfast potatoes, then deep fried. The spaetzel was like hunks of cloths line but warmed the the color was kind of brown. The red cabbage was tasteless and simply horrible. The Jägerschnitzel was border line burnt, tuff and had absolutely no taste. Other then that I enjoyed the ride home. read more

Stopped in for some beers and a bite to eat on the eve of Christmas eve. Since everyone is out shopping and traveling for the holidays, it was a relatively quiet and slow saturday night (unlike normal saturdays!). I've been coming to the Old Stein since I was a kid, before the fire and rebuild. The service is always extremely warm and inviting. Tonight we ordered the cheese and wurst platter, the Bavarian pretzel, and a pork schnitzel. Always served delicious food and amazing service. The pretzel comes with 3 dips: a bacon and cream cheese mixture, spicy mustard, and chili butter. The schnitzel comes over a bed of red cabbage and spaetzle, topped with a lemon wedge. I've never had a bad meal or bad experience while visiting the Old Stein Inn. If you haven't visited yet, I highly recommend you stop in. You'll be welcomed with a smile and great service. read more

Everything was great...the service (Maddy was our server), our seats (right under the heater in the Biergarten lol), dinner (I got the chicken jaeger schnitzel...delish), and the live music! Being German myself I struggle to find an authentic German restaurant that can match even close to my Oma's homemade cooking. Old stein Inn is the closest I've come so far in America - and while not AS good as my Oma's authentic German food (because who can ever really beat Oma), its damn close and delicious! Authentic German beer on tap and great atmosphere as well, definitely recommend! Highly recommend their bratwurst sandwich and pretzels - but heads up if you love soft pretzels like I do, it's really small and we always order one per person. read more

I guess I should thank the manager because my interaction with him should finally guarantee that I will no longer come here for mediocre food and just OK beer when there are many other options around the DMV which are so much better ( Donner Bistro and Old Europe just 2 examples. Our friend wanted German food to celebrate his birthday so I bought a small $18.00 cake for the 5 of us. In hindsight I should have called to see if they have a cake policy. They have a cake policy to charge each person $4.50 plate fee. So thank you Old Stein. No more undercooked bratwurst and hard potato salad etc. it is just a little drive to get hold of good german food in the DC area read more

We wanted to check this place out but we weren't impressed.The drinks were good. The food we ate, all had no flavor and Bland. We had the pretzel w/ mustard, and it looked like a 2 year old made it.The potato pancakes w/ apple sauce had no flavor. So we got the liverwurst w/ gerkins and toast.i thought it would be homemade but it tastes just like the ones from the grocery stores and we've had even better liverwurst from Aldi. So then we tried the sampler plate. It wasn't worth the $30. It should of been half that price. It was only noodles and cabbage.
