Old Stein Sampler Platter
Kerri C.

We went to Old Stein Inn for their Oktoberfest. We were a tad disappointed in what we drove 40 minutes for - the entertainment wasn't the best, no one was dressed up, there weren't any specials. The atmosphere was cute though, and we were grateful to have been able to bring our dogs! The beer selection is decent, as was the European wine selection. I enjoyed an Oktoberfest beer flight and a Raspberry lambic that was on tap. For food we split the currywurst, which was delicious. I ordered for dinner the sampler platter. The schnitzel was good, the spaetzle was nothing special, the bratwurst was good, and I enjoyed the red cabbage but the smoked pork chop was actually terrible- it tasted like I was eating smoke and was so dry. I do not recommend getting the platter for that reason. My boyfriend got the pork shank and that was unbelievably amazing- so tender and moist. We both agreed that was the best item of the night. Our waitress was super nice but I wish she would have popped around more often. If you're near here, I'd say pop in but be ready for the prices. It's not worth a special trip though in my opinion.

We get to Old Stein only once in a while, although we always enjoy the food. I made an online reservation to take my husband there for a late lunch today for Father's Day. As expected, it was crowded and the servers were hustling. We had asked for seating in the main dining room, so they gave us a mini two-top booth, which was fine. Our server came by almost immediately, and we gave her our whole order right away. We knew the kitchen would be backed up. We ordered two Kolsch beers. Our one food request was that the appetizer be served first. We ordered the citrus shrimp skewer to share. My husband ordered the Jagerschnitzel for his main dish. I ordered the Schnitzelwich, a breaded chicken schnitzel that comes on a bun with ham, cheese, & mustard, plus fries. We sipped our beers and relaxed. After some time, the server came to check on us and noted that we did not have the appetizer yet. When she went to check on it, they were plating up our main orders. The appetizer came out last. But she went to the manager to make it right, and they comped it. Our food was excellent, as always; portions are huge. We took some home for dinner. We really appreciated how we'll we were taken care of and that they worked hard to make it right after a glitch in timing on such a busy day.

Pretty packed, didn't feel like a super memorable experience altho the place is cute and the food is tasty, authentic German cuisine.

What a lovely place! Come for a birthday in Jan and their indoor/outdoor beer garden layout was the best way to enjoy as a large group. Beer menu was extensive, food menu even larger & the food did not disappoint! Apps: potato pancake, pretzel and meat/cheese platter. Entree: pork schnitzel Will definitely be back in the summer to check out the vibes then!

Sitting out in the beer garden is the best atmosphere, the services always pretty reliable. My favorite is the jagerschnitzel with breaded chicken and the bread pudding. They also always have a TON of specials so there's always something new!

Fun place to kick off Oktoberfest! We enjoyed the polka music and food and service. Bavarian pretzels, potato pancakes, spaetzle, were our appetizers and everything tasted delicious. We also had Jägerschnitzel and Currywurst with fries. They Currywurst was amazing! We definitely need to get that again. For dessert we had apple strudel with ice cream. The beer selection was good with lots of German beers to chose from.

Food has gotten worse. Bland and red cabbage that just was off. Will wait before going back again.

I have been twice. Really like the potato pancakes and hot pretzels. Wursts are good, as are the schnitzels. Love the hefe Weizen on tap.

We went in the warmer weather and sat outside. The food was good and the accordian player entertained us. A unique experience.

The place is incredibly clean, nicely decorated, and just welcoming. I was seated promptly, and my waitress recommended the Irish stew, which is what I went with. She also recommended a very tempting tasting flight, and I'm not going to admit to enjoying that while on lunch break. I'm not denying it. I'm just not admitting it. The stew was fantastic and really hearty. It warmed me up almost as much as the flight of... tea did. I couldn't resist getting dessert. The bread pudding was delicious and worth going back for on it's own.

My wife saw they had black bean soup and a pork special, so we decided to stay and were seated. Since our last visit about a year ago, they've made some changes. The seating has been updated, with a second bar added along with high-top tables and booths. The space looks very nice. Our server came over, took our drink order, and we asked for a bowl of the black bean soup. When he returned, my wife asked how the pork special was, and he said it was very good, so she ordered it. I ordered the cod fish and chips. When the food came out, everything looked good at first. Unfortunately, the fish and chips were very greasy -- it seemed like the fries were placed on the plate to soak up the grease from the fish. My wife's pork dish was worse. She was given two slices with connective tissue running through them that were so tough she couldn't even get a fork into them. The other piece was also extremely tough and difficult to cut, and the gravy had no flavor. When our server finally came back to check on us, my wife showed him the pork. His response was simply that he would let the manager know and take it off the bill. There was no offer to replace the dish or bring her something else to eat. After that, we never saw him again. My wife eventually asked another server for tea, which a different server brought. Later, another server came by to see if we were finished. I asked how much the eggnog was, and she quoted the price for a bottle, said I just want a glass, she said I'll get you a menu I explained to another waitress I just wanted a glass. Eventually, I got it -- though I asked for it without ice, and it still came with ice. At that point, I just drank it. The best thing was the bean soup. Overall, this was not a good meal and honestly the worst experience we've had in the 10+ years we've been coming here. Between the food quality and the lack of follow-up from our server, it was very disappointing. It will be quite a while before we return.
