We have long-standing experience with German food, one of is IS German, and this drek was abominable. We came here years ago and came back again last weekend. We had moved away and had hoped that the food would be as good as our the first time... it was just as tasty as we remembered. Our first visit was after we moved back from Germany and so we could compare to the German food we were used to. It was perfect! We went to Old Stein Inn for their Oktoberfest. We were a tad disappointed in what we drove 40 minutes for - the entertainment wasn't the best, no one was dressed up, there weren't any specials. The atmosphere was cute though, and we were grateful to have been able to bring our dogs! The beer selection is decent, as was the European wine selection. I enjoyed an Oktoberfest beer flight and a Raspberry lambic that was on tap. For food we split the currywurst, which was delicious. I ordered for dinner the sampler platter. The schnitzel was good, the spaetzle was nothing special, the bratwurst was good, and I enjoyed the red cabbage but the smoked pork chop was actually terrible- it tasted like I was eating smoke and was so dry. I do not recommend getting the platter for that reason. My boyfriend got the pork shank and that was unbelievably amazing- so tender and moist. We both agreed that was the best item of the night. Our waitress was super nice but I wish she would have popped around more often. If you're near here, I'd say pop in but be ready for the prices. We get to Old Stein only once in a while, although we always enjoy the food. I made an online reservation to take my husband there for a late lunch today for Father's Day. As expected, it was crowded and the servers were hustling. We had asked for seating in the main dining room, so they gave us a mini two-top booth, which was fine. Our server came by almost immediately, and we gave her our whole order right away. We knew the kitchen would be backed up. We ordered two Kolsch beers. Our one food request was that the appetizer be served first. We ordered the citrus shrimp skewer to share. My husband ordered the Jagerschnitzel for his main dish. I ordered the Schnitzelwich, a breaded chicken schnitzel that comes on a bun with ham, cheese, & mustard, plus fries. We sipped our beers and relaxed. After some time, the server came to check on us and noted that we did not have the appetizer yet. When she went to check on it, they were plating up our main orders. The appetizer came out last. But she went to the manager to make it right, and they comped it. Our food was excellent, as always; portions are huge. We took some home for dinner. We really appreciated how we'll we were taken care of and that they worked hard to make it right after a glitch in timing on such a busy day. read more

While the Old Stein was not our first choice for that particular evening, it was chosen for a large birthday celebration and, as always, it didn't disappoint. Service was a bit slow, but no more than a gasthaus in Germany, which allowed ample time socializing, like in the old country. It used to be 5 stars hands down the best every time. Its a 1.5 hour drive so we don't go as often as we'd like. The last two times its been less stellar. Its still good. Whenever I desire roaming the streets of Germany and sampling all the vendor's food, I come here! German family owned and operated since 1983. The aesthetic is very on-point. Simply walking from the parking lot and through the restaurant door is a portal door right into Germany. I swear it is very authentic even down to the aroma. The restaurant is HUGE and boasts a large bar and outdoor biergarten which is the perfect setting for their evenings of live music. I have enjoyed every dish that I have tried: the wild mushroom nudeln, gemuse spatzle, muenster cheese crab soup, potato pancakes, and the Jager frites! The desserts are a MUST--waffle sundae, root beer float, apfelstrudel and pretzel bread pudding?! YUM YUM YUM. They also have dishes that you wouldn't normally see on a Maryland menu such as kangaroo burgers, elk medallions, liverwurst, rabbit stew, veal sausages and giant charcuterie boards loaded with different German sausages. If you want to dabble in the genre of German beer, try them all via a beer flight! They have light flight and a dark flight, so why not get them both?! So on a normal Sunday drive with my best friend, we headed towards Edgewater to see what kind of new adventures we could find. Getting hungry I turned onto the yelp app to see what kind of food options we had available in that area. To my surprise I found a German restaurant, old Stein Inn is definitely a diamond in the rough. We would've been happy for just a sandwich shop but finding old Stein Inn definitely made us happy. Due to Covid regulations, social distancing was strictly enforced inside the restaurant. Masks are required for entry and the wait staff had masks on throughout our stay at the restaurant. The menu is very thorough and represents authentic German menu items that she would find in the country. Not being a beer drinker, my buddy said they had the best selection of German beers he seen in years. Keep in mind this is a little mom-and-pop local business, not a giant German restaurant financed by the elite that she would find in DC. We started off our dining experience with a Wurstplatte that consisted of sauteed sausages with assorted cheese and german brown mustard. It was the perfect appetizer for us. My buddy ordered the Das Boot sandwich with Spatzle and a side of red cabbage. It must have been delicious because he did not put it down and stopped talking until he finished his meal. For my entree, I selected the  Jagerschnitzel, which had a Jager sauce with mushrooms and came with red cabbage and a side of Spatzle. I went with the pork version and I have to say the schnitzel was perfectly cooked and the mushroom gravy was awesome. So since we ate out on 3.14.2021 (pie day) we both got the Apple Strudel with ice cream and a slather of whipped cream. HOLY perfectly cooked dessert ever. The apples were perfectly cooked, not too cooked but not raw also, the crust was perfectly crunchy and sweet and the ice cream and whipped cream hit the spot. BTW the size of the desert was HUGE. We always enjoy the Old Stein Inn. Food reminds me of Haussner's in Baltimore years ago. I had the pork chop - nicely smoked. I was told about this place sometime before the pandemic, summer of 2019 let us say. A buddy of mine who worked at the local liquor store, Matt, told me all about it and was further corroborated by another employee who also spoke positively about it. So what is the Old Stein Inn? As the name suggests, it is a German-themed restaurant, complete with a 'biergarten' - literally 'beer garden' in German; an outdoor place where you can relax, eat and drink beer. It is actually very nice, outdoors, but secluded- there's greenery, the parking lot is just beyond the walls but it is still relatively quiet and more importantly, neat. There's an outdoor bar so you don't have to wait for someone to come from inside the restaurant to get your libations, and the full menu is available out there. When the weather's nice, it tends to fill up before the restaurant does. As I don't care to eat outdoors, we always opt for the inside bar area, which is small and cozy, with a few intimate booths and a dozen or so stools up to a bar that runs the length of the room. It is full service but of course they specialize in German type beers and liquors. If you've never had it, I suggest the pear schnapps chilled as a starter, with a Schwarzbier (lit. 'black beer') chaser. Be warned, the schnapps goes down easy and has a pleasant, slightly sweet pear flavor and you'll get a number of them down before you realize that maybe you should not have. The menu is salted with German terms and German-inspired dishes; they feature a number of types of sausages- we're partial to the Bavarian Bauernwurst ourselves, which is a smoked pork sausage in natural casing (reminiscent of kielbasa) that is grilled, and served with German potato salad and sauerkraut. They make their own mustard there and it pairs perfectly with the sausage (or hot soft pretzel, we're fans of that as well). I opt for hand-cut inn fries instead of the potato salad, just because I like them better, though the salad is good as well. So we more or less waited three years to try it and though we wish we'd tried it sooner, I'm glad that it is still open for business. As I said, we like to sit in the bar area; on weekends the bartender is usually Barry, a friendly, gregarious type that you find in good bars everywhere- knowledgeable about the menu and the array of beers and liquors and more than happy to answer questions and give opinions. Since our first visit a few weeks ago, we've been back three times- it is quickly becoming a favorite watering hole that we have to save for the weekend since it isn't exactly close, but not so far away that the drive is onerous. We'd never been that far down Central Ave prior to visiting this place, it really is like another world down there. Quiet, quaint with a quality you normally see in lesser traveled parts of Maryland. By the water, a lot of the beaches are private access only, the public side is currently closed for construction; I could definitely picture living back up in there- quiet, tree-lined streets with water access. If that's your thing, you couldn't ask for more. Anyway, back to the Inn- if you like German-inspired food and drink with good service and a nice, lodge type of ambience, give the Old Stein Inn a try. You never know, we may even see each other, because we're definitely going back. I bet this place is hopping during Oktoberfest, can't wait to find out! read more

Stayed in Annapolis for a local staycation and looked on Yelp to see what there was to eat nearby. Despite knowing little about German food, we decided to try Old Stein Inn out. Everything we ordered was incredibly delicious. Standouts include the seafood spatzle that had a generous skewer of perfectly charred jumbo shrimp and a fillet of fatty white fish on top a rich seafood bisque covered spatzle. Tried their wild and regular wurst combination appetizers and every sausage was really moist and flavorful. Also got the combination platter which came with a grilled ham chop, pork schnitzel, bratwurst, red cabbage and potato salad. It was a perfect way to try a bit of everything and the ham in particular was really flavorful and tender. Service was attentive and friendly. We tried to go back another time before we left but they were closed for a holiday. It's definitely worth the drive from DC and I wouldn't mind coming up another weekend. read more

There's a good selection of German beers on tap. We were a group of about 10, and the service was fine. Most ordered a schnitzel of one kind or another. I got the pork Jägerschnitzel. It was very disappointing. It didn't have the golden brown look one would expect. It was also on the tough side -- should have asked for a steak knife because the regular knife was a struggle. Also, it was served on top of the Spätzle. Not exactly a side then. The red cabbage was a bit too sour. BTW, I'm German so I might be a bit picky. The other big downside is that the restaurant won't split checks so everyone gets their own check. Haven't had a problem at other restaurants for our monthly meetings. There are computerized systems that most restaurants use, so this one is baffling. Additionally, pre-pandemic, I visited Germany 3-6 times a year for several years. We used to go to Old Stein Inn quite a lot prior to the fire several years ago. Because we live farther north, it was a trek we didn't make often, but we visited a few times a year for a while. Eventually, we had a few visits where things didn't go well. Be it poor service or bad food, we just decided we weren't interested in coming back. As we are house hunting in the Edgewater area and haven't been in a while, we recently decided to give Old Stein Inn another try. It was a mistake. The only reason to go to Old Stein Inn is the beer selection. Unlike other German restaurants in Maryland, they offer a broad selection of German Beer. Their American/ Local craft brews are not very diverse, but that's no reason to avoid them. The food and the service isn't worth the visit. For example, I ordered pork schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzel. Both the spaetzel and red cabbage were very clearly from a can. The schnitzel was OK. My wife had Jaegerschnitzel. Her schnitzel was thicker than mine and was probably cooked for the same amount of time - a mistake that meant that hers was undercooked. When we spoke to our waitress about this, her response was "it doesn't matter how long you cook it, pork stays pink." Not only was she incorrect in saying this, her tone was nasty while saying so. Overall, this recent experience proved that our decision to retry Old Stein Inn was a mistake and it solidified our resolve to never return again. read more

After reading the Yelp reviews about this restaurant, we decided to drive up to Annapolis and give it a try. After all, who doesn't like German food? We made a reservation and they reminded us several times via text message in the days leading up to our trip. You can either eat inside or in the beer garden and the hostess recommended for our first visit that we try the beer garden. Good choice. When we arrived we were promptly seated. All the Maryland covid protocols were being followed. As you would imagine in a German brewhouse type restaurant there were lots of beers available. For appetizers we decided to go with the fried pickles and the Bavarian pretzel. Both good choices, and the fried pickles were the best I've ever had. Instead of Chip form they were Spears which contributes greatly to the pickle taste as you will have less breading. For entrees we went with the schnitzel, the sauer braten, the Bavarian sausage combo and the Munich sausage combo. The schnitzel comes with spaetzle and red cabbage, all the sausage plates feature German potato salad. All of the dishes were very good, but the spaetzle was a little bland. For dessert we shared the waffle and the apple strudel. Both of those were really good. The restaurant and restrooms were clean and the service we received was very good, thanks Alexis! Prices are what you would expect in the Annapolis area with the sausage combo going for about $18 and the sauerbraten leading the pack at about $25. We will definitely be back in Future. read more

The food was mediocre, service was slow, the noise level was absolutely unbearable and i could not talk to the person 2 seats away without yelling.
