Had dinner there a few days ago with my wife. we had been there years ago and the food wasn't very good but we had high hopes and wanted to support them after being closed so long because of COVID-19. we first were served the house salad which was crispy and fresh with a delightful dressing then the potato pancake appetizer with homemade applesauce. The applesauce was a bit sweet but overall the pancakes were excellent. everything was great until the Entrées came. my wife ordered a vegetarian dish with spatula and vegetables. She said it was delicious and enjoyed it very much. I ordered the Sauerbraten and was greatly disappointed. The meat was fatty and tasted like boiled beef coated with a sugar and vinegar gravy. I should've sent it back but was very hungry and ate the whole thing, regretting it later. Then came The apple strudel for dessert. Soggy pastry, not not flaky, mushy, tasteless apples and a ton of cinnamon. The service was great and everything else was good so if not for the very disappointing sauerbraten and dessert they would have received five stars. read more

I'm not a German food expert, even though I have been to Germany but I know what I like, and I like the Old Stein Inn. It's a heck of drive to get there. Definitely a destination location as opposed to someplace you may "catch on the way" somewhere. With that said, the Old Stein is appropriately Bavarian in decor and while you may not find yourself transported to the Black Forest... It's close enough. The outdoor Bier Garten is charming and thankfully they have replaced the old plastic chairs (a la Safeway) with nice sturdy mesh and metal seats which are quite comfortable. Of course, you could also choose to sit at one of the long wooden tables and benches if you are of the mind. They have a decent German Beer selection, 9 permanent varieties and a rotating 10th Beer selection of a seasonal nature. For me, though, the food is where it's at. We stopped by this past weekend for the Fourth of July and truly enjoyed ourselves. I had the Weisswurst ( a personal favorite) and the Bauerenwurst. Excellent quality sausages cooked perfectly and accompanied with a tangy German potato salad and sauerkraut. The kraut was laden with bacon, which I do love, but if I had a complaint for the meal, it was a bit greasy. Others had the Weinerschnitzel and the Chicken Cordon Blue. It was not busy so when one of my dining companions asked if the Weinerschnitzel could be prepared with a fried egg, our server graciously complied. If you want to know, it's called A La Holstein, to have it that way. The schnitzel was top notch. Crisp exterior, tender veal with anchovies and lemon. The chicken Cordon Blue was equally delicious and came with red cabbage and oodles of buttery spaetzle, which I thought was delicious but others percieved as bland. The place is a bit pricey, but the quality of the food is certainly there. Service was exemplary. I can't say enough good things about our waiter. He was pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient. One last note, if you go... do yourself a favor and order the Apple Cheesecake pie for dessert. You'll thank me later. read more

I only had to drive about 30 minutes to get here. And I napped for part of it. I absolutely love every minute of my experience here! We ended up sitting outside on the patio area in the back. Our server was super nice and friendly. I got the amber draft (the Oktoberfest) and it was yummy. We both started off with soup. I got the crab, and he got the goulash, which was good because we both wanted to try both and switched halfway though. I LOVE crab soup... but if I were to order one again I would probably order the goulash. It's filling though so be careful! For entree I ordered a schnitzel (I don't remember what it's called and I don't see it listed on their menu online) It came with fries and the french fries (excuse me, pomme frittes) were SO GOOD! I was absolutely full. It was so much food. But I had a taste of ice cream cake for dessert anyway. I want to come back and have fried pickles!!! The Old Stein Inn serves up excellent food as well as good service. After sitting down, our waiter took our orders within 5 minutes, and in a little over 10 minutes or so, we had our food. I had the braised pork shank, and the pork was cooked to perfection; it was tender, moist, and paired well with the spaetzle. I've sat outside in the biergarten a couple of times but have never sat inside before because why would I when the weather was beautiful. The biergarten is definitely my favorite part and I cannot wait until it opens back up again after winter is over. This was my first visit back after the fire. The renovations inside are an improvement and I love how it seems brighter and more open. I always end up at Old Stein Inn to meet friends and for some reason I never think that I like German food. But I do! That fresh warm Pretzel hits my mouth and it is heavenly. Thank goodness I always go with friends or I would be forced to devour the entire pretzel myself. If you've ever bought a pretzel at an Oktoberfest, you always wish it tasted like this pretzel. ah-ma-zing. It's the best pretzel I've ever had. I'm not exaggerating. Then you have to have to order the Beef Goulash Soup. Sometimes I think restaurants season everything with way too much salt and this is on the salty side but really good. My mom would definitely have to order a cup of hot water to add to this. My friend and I split the bowl and they were kind enough to split it in the kitchen into to small bowls. It was still a lot and thankfully didn't kill me with the salt intake. Order it! The Bavarian Bauernwurst/smoked pork sausages are definitely better than the Knockwurst/beef sausages. A very nice German reataurant that always seems popular with folks. It has decent food and a good beer list. They built a nice biergarten area in the back that is a nice change of pace for the warmer months when they keep the big doors open. It looks like they might have heaters ready to go for the colder months too, but I'm not sure about that though. Finally! I think I have found a German restaurant I can truly enjoy. It is a combination of new and old world. I've been through old school restaurants that served great food, but the place always smelled musty and old. It's unfortunate that there was a fire, but what a blessing in disguise. The place is new yet still honoring old world German. I didn't realize that the Old Stein Inn would be this packed - you would think they were giving something away! We ended up waiting an hour, but we were able to make our way through the beers at the copper topped, dark wood bar. There was something for everyone in our group from Spaten to Bitburger. Yeah for Oktoberfest! We ended up sitting in the biergarten (highly recommended) where it is open and warmed by space heaters. It is really casual and feels like a true biergarten. Our server was efficient and friendly, bringing us beers, appetizers and more. We started off with the fried dill pickles with mustard. Crunchy pickle and crispy coating won me over. Hooray for the potato pancakes with homemade applesauce. A dozen silver dollar pancakes flecked with dill were paired with a slightly sweet and tart sauce with apple chunks. Very nice touch! The bratwurst was served with potato salad and sauerkraut. The brats were perfect sausages. The sauerkraut was not what we were expecting (traditional tart and sour), but this was a mellow, carmelized and mustardy sauerkraut. The best was the jaegerschnitzel. A breaded and fried veal cutlet topped with mushrooms and gravy. Heaven in my mouth. The schnitzel was served with buttery spaetzle and red cabbage. These are my 2 favorite German sides and I was not disappointed. Warning: Food portions are hefty, so come hungry. The beers kept flowing and eventhough we were stuffed like brats, we ordered the Linzer Torte and Sacher Torte. The Linzer was more like a wedge of an almond cookie with raspberry filling. The Sacher Torte was rich, chocolatey and amazing. They really thought through the details on the interior and the menu. I look forward to returning and trying more of the menu. I may have to make another day trek since it is a bit far out. read more

We went to the Old Stein Inn to celebrate our anniversary. The service and food as well as the selection of beer were wonderful. The experience was everything you would enjoy. However, upon using the WC, I was a bit appalled at the framed poster in the ladies room. I was admiring it when I saw it was boasting of the 1972 Munich Olympics. If anyone knows the history of that Olympics, a sickening feeling forms in your gut. If you do not know the history, please take a second to google it. It was a disgusting act of terrorism against Jewish athletes. This is why I gave the restaurant a 4 out of 5. The owners should know better. read more

We have visited the Inn several years ago and brought a party of 10 today. The last time I was there the food was fantastic, today not so much, extremely disappointed to say the least. The jager gravy was like mud with no flavor, the mushrooms were whole and not sliced and the pork schnitzel was burnt. The waitress couldn't remember who ordered drinks and had to be told several times to get refills. Our bill was over $500.00 and I will never be back. My friends highly recommended this restaurant and I'm so glad I listened! A super cozy and inviting spot. We went on a Friday night, it was super busy---I recommend making a reservation. The biergarten is where you should sit, super fun atmosphere with live music. The food was phenomenal, we shared the fried pickles and each got different entrees ranging from sandwiches, schnitzel, and sausage platter. Everything was delicious, from the main entree to the sauerkraut and french fries. The service was also really good, the servers were super nice and helpful. I really like Old Stein. The beer selection is very unique and authentic and the staff is knowledgeable on the selections. I tend to get a flight every visit just for the variety. Food is authentic German, but they also have traditional American fare; steaks, steamed shrimp, etc. Sometimes the staff can come across as a bit aloof, but that may just because they can get really busy. All in all, this is a great local choice. read more

A great way to celebrate the ceremonial end of summer, bier with friends in a close to authentic biergarten! I really do enjoy the food here, the menu covers what I consider authentic dishes as well as "americanized" dishes as well. The bier and wine menu's are great, and the seasonal 10th tap is always a real treasure! Sitting in the outdoor garden, with good friends, great bier, some pretzels and wurst and I am a happy camper. The food is good here, the schnitzle and dare I even say, the "schnitzle cordon blue" are great dishes. I love the pretzels, not completely authentic, but any pretzel is a good one, and these are good ones. Oddly enough, the last three meals at Old Stein Inn have turned me off. Service and food quality was totally lacking. So sad to say. Twice, I got my fave - short rib sauerbraten, and both times, it was dry and tasteless. The dumplings were chewy and off-tasting. Tonight, I took my cousins there for their Pig Roast night. We should have been a little skeptical...there were only two meals available from the monthly special - a pulled pork sandwich and a platter including pulled pork, a couple of spare-ribs and some pork loin. Really? Is that all? I could cobble that together from Safeway. The meat was dry and tasteless. It included barbeque sauce. Are you kidding? Why not a pork knuckle? A pork shank? A pork cheek? Because it was a meal from Safeway or a provider...NOT a pig roast. I got the smoked pork chop with sauerkraut and German potato salad. Gross. The pork chop was over cooked and dry, the German potato salad was sliced potatoes and pickles...dry and not a salad, and the sauerkraut looked day old with cold (!) bacon...so greasy and cold. We spend $140 plus $35 tip for a very very subpar meal. And, the service was awful. I ordered a beer and my sister ordered a taste of a special beer. The waitress walked off after I told her we had two other beer orders. She did that with the appetizer and with dinner too. Awful service...think she was the bartender too. read more

Let me start by saying my family has a German background and this was our 2nd visit since 2005 which was extremely crowded and loud then. Eight of us decided to visit on Superbowl Sunday to celebrate a birthday. The place was basically empty when we arrived which suited us. Service was quick and everyone received their dinner at the same time. Appetizers of fried pickles and onion rings started us off which we enjoyed. Then 4 people had the Old Stein short rib Sauerbraten. 3 people had the Jagerschnitzel. 1 had the Old Stein Sampler Platter. My father who served several years military service in Germany and my mother who is from Germany were not pleased with the sauerbraten. My brother-in-law thought it tasted like plain pot roast. The red cabbage had too much vinegar and needed a touch sugar to be properly made. The potato dumplings were more like a flour dough ball that nobody could finish. It was bad. The Jagerschnitzel was large and fried with Panko bread crumbs but lacked seasoning. The mushroom & bacon sauce was a nice top dressing but there's not enough of it. Unfortunately, the fried pickles and onion rings were the biggest hit for the day. read more

We were here for our social committee outing. It was a buffet style arrangement. The food was great. I particularly liked the potato pancakes, red cabbage, pretzels, brats and of course the strudel. Dear god, the Das Boot sandwich is probably my favorite sandwich I've ever had in my history of eating sandwiches. And I'm a big fan of sandwiches. Also love the Wurst Plate which is sausages and cheeses. Without fail there has always been exactly one cheese for every sausage that comes with the Wurst Plate. There has never been an odd one out which makes me happy. Just got finished our Porsche Octoberfest meeting at the Old Stein In. and and it sure was a wonderful afternoon delight. I can not say enough about the superb service that was presented my Devin and his team! They really had great attention to detail and even brought out fruit infused water for our enjoyment. I am giving the Old Stine Inn the benefit of one star solely for the taste of the food. Other than that, this place SUCKS!! Me and my family (party of eleven) had a reservation for Saturday 10/13/2018( my birthday) at 6:00 pm. We arrived promptly and were seated. Within a few minutes we were rudely greeted by our server. He is a waste of space with dark hair and a goatee. If I could remember his name, trust me, I would blast it all over this review. He wasted no time telling us not to expect good service because "it's Oktoberfest, and we're just too busy to please everybody. I recommend you decide what you want now because it's gonna take a while to get your meals. " His exact words. When he started taking orders for drinks I asked him if we could do three separate checks and along with his negative sigh and rolling of his eyes, he told me no. "We don't split checks. You and your family will have to figure it out at the end of your meal." His exact words. I said "okay, whatever. Let's just order." So we did. Drinks, appetizers, main courses and deserts took entirely too long. Whenever someone wanted a refill on their drink our waiter was overly rude about doing his job. At this point I started to get noticeably upset and I think our waiter took notice of it. He approached me midway through our meal and said he pulled some strings with the Chef and is now willing to split our checks but he had to take an ass chewing from his boss over it. I said "okay . Sounds good." After the main course I asked for a desert menu and, of course, more negative body language from our waiter. He made it so abundantly clear with his rude behavior and negative remarks that we were an inconvenience to him. We waited thirty minutes for desert (a brownie and scoop of ice cream)to get to our table. We asked for the checks. None of the checks were correct he over charged my sister-in-law's family and she asked him to take the check back and correct it. He then VERBALLY insulted her by making a rude and sarcastic remark about her reaction to his mistake with the checks. This is a warranted negative review on this restaurant. The waiter was horribly rude and terrible at his job. He basically told me from the jump to expect subpar service and succeeded in delivering subpar service. This guy was an overall bad person toward my family and needs to be properly trained or terminated. Whoever owns this restaurant should be ashamed. If you are going to charge me $120.00 for dinner(w/wife and child), every aspect of that meal should be spot on and the service should be impeccable. Sadly, it wasn't.
