So the show was so much fun. The guy told a great story and the fire was huge. The food tasty good. There is a guy who comes and removes the bones. The service was not great. I have mixed feelings about this place. I found the host and the person working the cash register extremely rude and off-putting. The other wait staff though that go around de-boning the fish and serving were friendly and very nice. The show of cooking the whitefish was interesting. It provided some good backstory and the guy cooking the fish and telling us about it was funny and enthusiastic about his job. I felt rushed most of the time. Rushed to go outside. Rushed to go inside. Rushed to sit. The food- it was just okay. I respect and appreciate that this is part of the tradition here for decades but part of me almost feels that with the amount of tourists they have coming in all the time, their quality might have gone down with the rise in quantity. To be quite honest, I found the fish rather bland and not as fresh as I thought it would/should be and this is the "star" of the show (what they are famous for). I found it rather mediocre. Everything else on the plate like the bread (tasted store bought), onion, potato, coleslaw- they were all okay but just boiled so nothing special. I mean everything was just boiled in water. I think it's good for a one time experience and I'd bring my friends here so they can try it too but I wasn't blown away by the food or the service from half of the staff. read more

We stopped in for breakfast on a lovely fall morning. The patio was open and the sun was shining, a perfect day. They have a very traditional breakfast menu, everything you would expect to see. I had 2 eggs and sausage with Toast, they have wonderful homemade cherry jam. Everything was cooked well, the hash browns were very crisp. My retired parents travel to Door County several times a summer and this is their absolute favorite fish boil. This summer my husband and I had the chance to join them on one of their trips and we thoroughly enjoyed this fish boil too! The time outside watching the boil was just the right length and we learned while we watched and listened. The fish was excellent, the whole meal wonderful. I especially enjoyed the slaw and tea breads made by the owner herself. If I lived closer and could come back regularly, I certainly would! Other things to know: Make a reservation. You will stand in line for your food and take it to your table, but they keep cooking out back so your fish will be hot even if you're at the end of the line. Wait staff will help you debone your fish (let them!). There are chicken and ribs for people who don't do fish. read more

This is such a unique experience. Don't come to door County without experiencing a fish boil. This one is great because it has I am an experienced cook who tells you the story and history of fish oils as you experience the process. The meal was so Yummy. What has been said the fish is very mild, the coleslaw is delicious, three kinds of breads, potatoes and onions with butter melted over the top. We ended up eating both breakfast and dinner here and we highly recommend. Breakfast was lovely - we had simple breakfast fare but the service was good and we were able to sit outside. We came back for a traditional fish boil and boy were we thrilled! The presentation and story was interesting- made it an event. The dinner was delicious- we love white fish. But the PIE!!! It really is an old post office!! Neat. They have fish boils out back. Fun little show if you've never seen on. It was raining the night we were out there. There were umbrellas so we stayed pretty dry. Came with my mom, sister and husband. The restaurant is accessible so we were able to navigate my mom with her walker to a nice reserved table right by the entrance. It's a bit strange, they don't serve you at the table. You walk through the buffet line and you get a piece of fish or chicken depending what you previously ordered. It's basically one trip through the buffet line so it's not your typical buffet. Most of the fish boils actually bring your food to table and thus this one is different in that respect. The meal was filling since there was lots of bread slices to choose from. My husband and sister doesn't do fish and they got chicken. They seemed content with it. They comply coming to fish boils just to please my mom. Too sweet! Not 100% sure if we'll be back. With so many great Yelp reviews, the Old Post Office Restaurant looked like an easy breakfast pick for my husband and me this morning. They did not disappoint. The menu is fairly standard American fare, but it is consistently executed well and is fairly priced. The real jewels are the outdoor seating with a spectacular picture postcard view of the bay and the all star staff. It was a great way to start our day. After reading restaurant reviews for the past several months, I notice many people complaining about the service they received at some establishments. Yes, these are trying times for everyone. Inflation, a limited tourist season, the pandemic, low unemployment, staff vacancies, and other economic factors have pushed prices higher than many of us may have enjoyed in the past or elsewhere and stressed many businesses. However, the staff at the Old Post Office Restaurant during our visit were all customer focused, very pleasant, and prompt with service. They did not disappoint. (Probably deserves somewhere between a 3.5 and 4 stars, but 4 stars feels generous). We were told to come here to experience a traditional Door County "fish boil." The boil apparently dates back several hundred years when Scandinavian settlers occupied the area. The fish boil is exactly what it sounds like: boiled fish, with boiled potatoes and white onions. The Old Post Office restaurant also includes a serving of cole slaw, bread of the day, and a slice of cherry pie. Most of the dinner is about the novelty and experience. Arrive early so that you're able to watch the boil out back (also arrive early because parking in the area is very hard to come by). After the "boil master" comes out to explain the history of the boil, he then adds the fish to the boiling pot and tosses on some kerosene, which ignites into a big smoke ball signaling the boil is ready. Everyone then goes to their tables to be served their food. The fish comes bone in, and there are lots of pin bones to remove as you eat. The food is fine--about what you'd expect boiled fish and vegetables to taste like. The pie was branded authentic Door County cherry pie (because cherries grow abundantly in the area) but it was most certainly a mass-produced pie (probably from Aramark or GFS). The highlight of the evening however was watching the sunset over the water as we finished our dinner. read more

Had breakfast here and it was excellent. We had cherry pancakes and blueberry pancakes, both with sausage links. We swapped one pancake so both got to try both. We had a cherry mimosa, just to try the local fare. It was good. Different but good. Surprisingly good was a canned Frank's Red Hot Bloody Mary served with a celery salt rimmed glass with pickle slide and olives. This place was so fun! Get there early to enjoy a drink by the fire. Once the show starts, you get a brief history lesson on the fish boil, then go to your table to enjoy your meal. They know what they're doing and they do it well! It was our first fish boil and I'm really glad we tried it here because having the fish de-boned tableside was a must for me - I didn't want to be picking bones out of my meal. The fish is super fresh, and tastes great with lemon, melted butter & a little seasoning (all provided for you). Sides were good too and the cherry pie was excellent! Super cozy place. The moment we walked in we were seated right away, when I sat down it was very warm and cozy. Me being young I didn't order coffee but my brother did, I noticed there was creamer and sugar already ready. When his coffee started to go down someone would be there to fill it up. The staff was very nice and we got our food very fast, the food was amazing I had gotten the pancakes and they were very fluffy. The looks of the place were amazing there was a beautiful over look of the water outside of the window and the wallpaper in the inside was very comforting. over all I'd say this place is an amazing place to go for a morning breakfast or brunch. read more
