We heard about these "fish boils" whenever we inquired about Door County so we researched it a bit, got local recommendations and reserved here (have to get reservations anywhere). They set up the big fire with a big iron pot over it behind the restaurant. They do 3 fish boils an evening the whole season and get thousands of pounds of fresh white fish a week; the same fisherman for 40 years. It is cooked in water with salt only, the cook cuts the fish right before it is boiled so doesn't loose its juiciness. The water boils for about 40 min but the fish cooks for 7 minutes! After the fish are taken out they cook the red potatoes and onions. Our meal is then served with Cole slaw , 3 types of bread, butter and a special (shaker) seasoning. After years of Door County vacations with my family growing up and never going to a fish boil, I finally attended one during a trip here 3-4 years ago. It's a touristy thing to do but I have little shame anymore and care less about what anyone thinks is cool or uncool. Old Post Office is inside just that. It was once an actual post office but was long ago closed and eventually turned into a pretty good restaurant. The fish boil was easy to reserve and easy to find out back. There's a title they give the person who does the presentation and cooking which I can't remember, but he told the whole history of fish boils originally meant as a cheap way to feed large crews of loggers and laborers. The presentation was fun, with the big show of throwing kerosene on towards the end to make it boil over. They use whitefish and I can tell you nothing tastes as good as fish caught that morning and cooked that evening. I really don't need much more than fish and potatoes, but there were some other sides too. All in all, entertaining and the food was delicious! read more

What a great meal that was an experience as well. We were staying in an AirB&B within walking distance of the restaurant, so that was nice. We had a 7.45pm seating time but were told to arrive 45 minutes early to watch out fish boil being prepared over an outdoor fire. There was seating on benches around that fire. It was a really windy evening, and the real "show" didn't start until about 7.35, so we sat for over 30 minutes with smoke blowing in our faces. But we still enjoyed being in the crowd. My point is that there is no need to be there 45 minutes early. But those 10 minutes when the fish master dropped onions, potatoes, and the fish in the boiling water were exciting and fun, so don't miss that part. We were seated on the porch with a perfect view of the water and sunset. Service was great, and the food was exceptional. We weren't sure we would like the boiled fish, but it was a mild white fish steak that the waiter removed the bones from at our table, and it was delicious. There were 3 of us, and we opted to order one fish, one rib dinner, and one fried chicken dinner. All came with the onions, potatoes, several slices of bread, melted butter, and cherry pie. All the food was delicious and we had enough food for lunch the next day. When in Dooe County don't miss this experience. read more

I've been to a few fish boil spots throughout door county and while old post office is good with service and speed of delivery, the show experience isn't as refined. The boil master doesn't really mingle with the guests, likely because they are busy, until the seven minutes prior to the boil. Pretty simple recipe, but let me tell you, probably the best lake fish I've had in the region. Super fresh tasting, and the texture amazing. One of the usual stops in door county. The restaurant was again crowded inside and outside. The food is terrific although more expensive than many other breakfast places, hash browns extra 5 dollars bacon extra, the service was great! My only concern would be getting table 20 which is right by the door, with servers going in and out, bathrooms clean and well kept a very good spot for your meals, breakfast lunch, dinner and fish boils. We were here for fish boil. It was quite a show. We really enjoyed the experience. The fish didn't have a lot of flavors to it but were fresh and tasty. The breads came with it were nice as well. My boyfriend chose ribs instead and he liked it. At the end of the experience, you got a cherry pie which was very tart and delicious. The pie was not mind-blowing but pretty decent. A traditional Wisconsin fish boil - a first for us, and this was a most delightful place to enjoy it.  You can find several places in Door County that have them but this one had top ratings from a couple of sources and more importantly and conveniently for us, was located right next to where we were staying (the Edgewater Resort).  As usual, make sure you make a reservation as virtually all fish boils in Door County are totally booked up. The fish boil here is currently $22 pp and when you add it all up including the fish boil "show" and narrative storytelling by boilmaster Jeremy, and the dinner with a slice of delectable Door County cherry pie, it's quite a good deal actually.  The dinner was two deboned whitefish steaks with boiled red potatoes, a white onion, cole slaw, and slices of 3 different breads.  Melted butter and some seasoning is also provided at the table.  They used to do the dinners buffet style but that ended with Covid and the server said the current mode works out better for everyone.  We were also told this restaurant is the only one where the server debones the whitefish for you if you so chose, which we did.  We both found the whitefish super fresh (caught that morning) and delicious with some melted butter.  I didn't find it bland at all as some have described, but I also don't generally like an excess of salt or seasoning either. Jeremy was entertaining and informative and has been at it for 6 years.  I actually watched both the 5pm and our reserved 6:30pm fish boils because the first one was coincidentally just starting as we returned to the hotel from our afternoon out on the road.  I'm glad I did as the 5pm lighting was ideal for photography, and it got noticeably darker with the sun setting during the second boil. They boil about 100 whitefish steaks for about 50 diners during each boil.  It was particularly fun to do the fish boil for a first time, and I wouldn't mind doing another one some day in another setting.  The dining is comfortable with two inside dining rooms and a heated patio as well.  Overall, a fun and unique tradition to experience, and a big thumbs up! read more

We chose it because we had two in our party that don't like fish, and the Old Post office has ribs or chicken as other choices for dinner (along with the regular fish boil sides). The Old Post Office Restaurant is basically a breakfast and a fish boil place. The large number of tourists staying in motels need breakfast places and this is one of the largest and best. The fish boil (of which there are about 10 in Door Country) is a good one. The preparation is worth experiencing at least once and the $20 for food, demonstration and sunset is worth the money. I keep looking for an excellent cherry pie in Door Country and this isn't it either. The problem everywhere is the crust. The place that masters it will make a name for itself. read more

This is the place to go for a Door County Fish Boil! Perfect Location to Watch the Sunset while you eat your delicious meal! I'll tell you why I picked it. But, first... what we didn't pick. We heard about White Gull Inn, but we decided to have breakfast there, rather than dinner, and didn't want to visit the same place twice during our short DC stay. It was a great breakfast. I've reviewed that, too. We also heard about the Fish Boil at Pelletier's, just down the street from White Gull. We walked by during their boil and it was cramped and crowded in a small area behind the restaurant adjacent to a patio that was full of diners. The smoke was blowing throughout the patio. I walked around looking for a place to sit and have a drink and watch, but it was unpleasant with the smoke. I get it... fish boils make smoke. But... we moved on. SO... WHY OLD POST OFFICE? It was in Ephraim, a town we hadn't visited yet. One of the prettier towns in DC. It has good reviews. And, it's right on the water. We arrived early, as requested. They have a very large yard behind the restaurant that is lined with cottages. Lots of space for the boil. Benches surround the boil pit. There's a bar on the lawn serving a wide variety of beverages. Plenty of room to spread out. Our seating was booked full but we never felt cramped. The boil takes about 30 minutes and is fun to watch. The Boilmaster tells you what he's doing and why, history of the boil, etc. Then, the freshly caught fish go in (actually, caught the previous day, which is typical, I think). Then, 7 minutes later ... the kerosene on the fire and BOOM! You are assigned a table on the patio when you arrive. After the BOOM, my wife and I walked to our table and the spot was perfect. Right at the edge of the patio, facing the lake at Sunset. The plated meal arrived quickly. The server will debone your fish, if you choose. He did for my wife, I did my own. He was faster and more thorough. Great server! The meal was delicious. Simple fish, potatoes, onions, cole slaw and bread, with cherry pie for dessert! All, while watching a lovely sunset (if the weather cooperates)... hard to beat it. And, it was only $22 bucks a person! plus drinks. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE! read more

Fish Boils are a dime a dozen on the peninsula but the Old Post Office Restaurant is the total package. Highly recommend this spot - it checks many boxes. An idyllic setting in Ephraim across from the water - there's a great mini-beach for the kids to hang out at if you find yourself waiting. We made reservations around noon for a 6pm fish boil that evening. Check in was easy and restaurant and staff follow C19 precautions. Sanitizer before you come in is provided and seating is distanced. Staff wears masks and gloves as well. The boil was wonderful and there is a beverage cart for beers, soda and wine. The boil-master Torch is a pro and gives you a great background in the history of the peninsula, the tradition of the fish boil, where they source their fish (it was swimming less than 24 hours earlier), and some background on how they do their boil. Make sure to bring a camera to capture the boil over. After the boil over you sit at your table and the fish is delivered to you and they debone the fish for you - which was great. Our server was very attentive and great with the kids. We found out they are the only fish boil that will debone it for you - so if you have kids, this place is a MUST. We each got 2 large pieces of whitefish steaks, amazing coleslaw, boiled potatoes and onions, this slices of homemade breads (lemon, pumpkin and marble rye). There is "Curts Seasoning" on the table which is great on the fish if you need a little kick. It's sold at the restaurant too. A slice of Door County cherry pie is included and for a couple dollars extra you can go ala'mode. A fish boil here is a must-do. My very first fish boil experience and pleasantly surprised! The service was outstanding from the woman who accepted my reservation down to the waiter. We arrived 30 minutes early to sit around the preparation fire. The master fish boiler gave a funny and informative history on the fish boil concept and we met other couples from other areas of the country, which was fun. I have to admit i was reluctant but the fish was incredible. The waiters remove the bones (as best as possible). Your plate includes two fish fillets, two red potatoes and two onions with Cole slaw. It is recommended to pour melted butter over the dish, which i did (maybe a little liberally) and add Curt's seasoning if desired. WOW! the fish was flaky - absolutely no fish smell because its caught fresh by a local fish monger. Potatoes and onions were cooked to perfection and the addition of the Curt's gave things a nice flavor. The coleslaw was excellent too. Then to top off an already incredible meal, came the cherry pie. I do not typically eat pie, but the crust was similar to shortbread and the pie filing had loads of fresh cherries with a small amount of gel that is usually present in pie. I could live off the crust alone. If you're visiting Door County, i highly recommend making a reservation, you wont be disappointed. read more

The kids didn't want the boiled fish so they had chicken tenders, ribs, fried chicken and a hot dog. All were enjoyed. Fish boil meal came with boiled red potatoes and white sweet onions, cole slaw, various slices of bread and melted butter to go on fish and veggies. It's a mild fish and the sides are plain but you can add some seasoning salt provided to get more flavor. Ok we went here for the traditional fish boil. I was able to make the reservation the day of for 6:30pm, they tell you to show up at 6pm so you can watch them prepare the fish boil. The show was very interesting, I have never seen or had a fish boil before. The restaurant was cute but the view was the best! We sat outside and couldn't have asked for a better location to watch the sun set! The fish boil was decent, not sure if it's something I would prefer to have again but if you are up to try something different you should totally stop! I hate picking bones out of the fish and the cool part was that your server deboned the fish for you if you want. The kids loved the fish boil show! The show is a lot of fun. The chief gives you a history of fish boils in Door County and explains the boiling process. The huge flames are amazing. We actually didn't get the fish. The fried chicken and the ribs were both good. I had to wipe some of the barbecue sauce off. The kids liked their chicken tenders, and they usually don't eat chicken tenders. Save room for the cherry pie! Meals are served with coleslaw, two potatoes, an onion, and three slices of bread (rye, lemon, and pumpkin). Parking can be hard, but there is parking on the road and a small lot right next door. read more
