Pros: very clean and all the staff was very kind and attentive when we asked for things Otherwise I really don't have anything else positive to say. I would definitely not go here with children. We made our reservation for 5:30, arrived at 5:15 per the restaurant and didn't actually eat until well after 6:00. We also ordered the option for the white fish boil (the kids meal and the adult option (as I was planning to share with my 9 month old) - both the kids meal and my meal were still Cajun. I'm guessing the actual Cajun option would have been spicier, but I could not share with my 9 month old and my 6 year old also struggled to eat her meal due to the spice level. I even confirmed on the phone prior to arriving due to some of the reviews I have seen about similar issues. The alcohol options were limited and overall for the price this meal was not worth it. Booked for a traditional fish boil and got served Cajun which was way too spicy. No fish "boil". Over 30 minutes to be served and anther 20 to get a cherry pie which one slice had no cherries. Fish was tough and again extremely spicy. I would rate a 0 if possible. And way too expensive for the service and food. read more

A must if you're in door county. We read a lot about the fish boils and were very pleased with Kettle Black's take on the Wisconsin tradition. The boil master was a 5 generation and his daughter who seated us at the beginning was well on her way of keeping the family business alive. Couple of notes: deboning your own fish is not for the faint or the ADHDs, I definitely gave up 1/4 of the way through. Second, SAVE ROOM FOR PIE AND ICE CREAM AT THE END! We ordered the Cajun Boil with Lobster Tail and it was honestly some of the best food I've had in a long time. You can tell the chef takes deep pride in his craft. He invited us to watch as he prepared the boil, walking us through every step and explaining the meaning behind each ingredient. It felt personal, intentional, and made the meal that much more special. The boil itself? Perfectly seasoned, fresh, and bursting with flavor. Came here on a Friday night and had an awesome experience. When we first walked in, we were greeted by Marcela. She is one of the nicest people I've encountered working in the service industry. She served us drinks and was incredibly friendly and personable. At one point in the night, two of us went back to order more drinks and we really enjoyed talking with her. It seemed like she wanted us to have a great experience. The fish boil was very entertaining and done by Paul (the owner). He was very knowledgeable and just a great guy. Kettle Black has been ran by his family for many years so he knows his stuff! After the fish boil outside, we went in and ate in the upper level. The fish was delicious! It was served with red potatoes, corn, and coleslaw. I won't usually rave about coleslaw but theirs was so good. I think they add one of their sauces to it, so it has a lot of flavor. The sauces were great for dipping pieces of the fish in and had a lot of flavor- I really liked the spicy one! The service was great. Everything about this place was positive. Hubby and I decided on the Cajun boil instead of the traditional white fish boil. It was a wonderful choice for us. The food was so flavorful and delicious! We arrived at 7:15 and sat out back to watch the process. It was entertaining, but I highly recommend bringing a drink out with you because it will be close to 8:30 before you are seated inside and served dinner. There was more than enough food, but I do feel like for the price there really isn't a need to charge for additional cornbread. That felt kind of chintzy in light of the entire evening, especially, since there were frequent comments made during the boil about making sure to sop up all of the delicious broth with that cornbread. My partner and I did the fish boil on a Monday evening in July. It was surprisingly fully-booked it seemed. We arrived right before the boil started and the staff was helpful and accommodating. The owner's presentation and explanation of the fish boil history and his journey to Kettle Black was great, and the boil itself was fun but not too drawn out. I didn't have high expectations for whitefish frankly, but the meat was actually really moist and flavorful. It's just a bit fishy though (that smell stays on your hands all night). All the sides were great as well. The staff was awesome, I know they basically had to do 90 minute service turns but it didn't feel rushed. Owner came out to talk to every diner during service after meal. That was a nice touch. read more

Waited all day to get to this place, since the boil wasn't until 6 PM and had a long drive after dinner. It was quite enjoyable from start to finish. The cornbread was on point with every crumb the coffee was hot and fresh and robust and the best cup I had on the entire weekend trip in the door, the boil was quite unique for February being able to have the experience through the window on the deck with step-by-step experience. Gulf shrimp were so delicious and fresh tasting with vegetables like brussel sprouts and sweet potato as well as the red potato and fresh corn and sausage. There's a lobster tail upgrade option as well. Love the special chef made seasoning and sauce. The cherry pie tasted fresh baked and flakey crust was amazing. We had a really great night at Kettle Black for the Cajun Shrimp Fish Boil. Door County is known for its white fish boils, but this was such a unique take on it that my whole family preferred! The meal was so much more flavorful and we all loved it! There was even a great vegetarian option that was full of flavor. They also do traditional fish boils, but I recommend the Cajun one! It was a little spicy, but nothing extreme and there was a great sauce to kick it more if you like. Great atmosphere and personal experience talking with the chef and other attendees. The food was tasty. That is where the good experience ended. We were there with a large group (24) and had made reservations weeks in advance. Everyone placed their orders weeks ago and the majority wanted the Whitefish (it IS a FISH boil). The menu that we were provided shows that the whitefish dinner was $25.95, came with fish, potatoes, onions, corn on the cob, coleslaw and a piece of cherry pie. We arrived and were told that since it was tuesday, we would have the whitefish but it would be done cajun style. That didn't sit to well with over half of our group and nothing was done about it. We were all served the Cajun dinner which was basically Soup and even though we had all ordered the Whitefish, we were charged for the Jumbo shrimp/lobster at $35.95/plate/bowl. There was also no dessert. The service was weak at best as you had to get your own drinks as there were no waiters/waitresses. The food was VERY spicy. So much so that most did not eat it. Imagine expecting a $26 Whitefish supper and ending up with a $36 cajun whitefish soup that you couldn't eat. Because of the large group, they took it upon themselves to add a rather large gratuity with ended up costing $44.84/plate. NOT HAPPY! Recommended, NO. Would return, ABSOLUTELY NOT. My recommendation would be go 200 feet up the road to Pelletier's. We've been there and they were OUTSTANDING. read more

Their whitefish is mushy and has so many tiny bones in it that eating it is quite the project; I had tiny bones all over the plate, stuck in my mouth and some even managed to get in my water! The coleslaw, potatoes and cornbread were good. The cajun seasoning at the table was good. The cherry pie was not good; the filling tasted like it was from a can. We happened to see they were having a Cajun shrimp boil and that is my husband's favorite. We stopped in at 8:00pm to see if we could get a table. They told us the boils were at 5:30pm and 7:30pm, but they said "sure, come on in." Even though we missed the correct time, they did a mini boil just for us and gave us a wonderful meal. Others had the boil which was a mixed review, honestly I think those that were on the fence just was likely due to that not being their preference of how fish is served. The chef/owner walked us through what he was adding and some of the history of his restaurant, as well as some great information on fish boils in general. What a great experience. Interior design was warm and welcoming. View of the water front. The meal was very tasty and the cajun broth was really flavorful. The owner interacts with the crowd. I was glad we went. One thing that I did not like was that there were not drink prices at the bar, there were not drink menus at the table, and there are not drink menus online. So you have no idea the prices until you get the bill at the end. The cherry pie was mediocre, I would expect something a little more robust from door county. 8 of us had dinner tonight and ordered the Cajun fish boil. We had to order our drinks at a small bar by the front door and if we needed more we had to go and get them ourselves. The food was VERY spicy but the corn bread was great. We were charged an additional $16 for a few more pieces. We asked for butter several times but never got any. We were basically ignored all evening but were still charged a 20% service charge. Very disappointing and even when we asked about bill total and lack of service we were told that that is just how they do things there. read more

Terrible experience. Our Cajun Boil reservation was for 7:30pm (we were told to arrive and check in by 7:15pm which we did), but we did not receive our food until 8:45pm- an hour and 15 minutes later! Typically with boils, guests sit around the boiling pot and the host explains the boil at the reservation time (7:30pm), and typically the host removes the boiled goods after the explanation (about 15 minutes) and guests get seated at their tables as the food is brought to them. The host/owner had many opportunities to explain the delay but did not do so. Guests patiently waited and waited for 1 hour sitting around the pot. I approached the host around 8:15pm to ask why the boil isn't ready and I received some lame excuse about the 5:30pm reservation having been full and that they are behind schedule. The food did not make up for the poor service- it was salty and not flavorful. It I've had Cajun boils before and it's an embarrassment to Southerners to call this a Cajun boil. The cornbread was good. We all make mistakes, but the fact that the hosts did not once acknowledge the significant delay, provide a status update for when we will be served, or express an apology for the delay was quite frustrating. read more
