If there is a line of a dozen or more standing in line, plan on returning at 5:30 pm, or perhaps every half hour as the first in line get welcomed and seated first. Don't be upset if you press for seating even if the restaurant is half empty. We're puzzled as to why the restaurant doesn't take reservations, as there is a staff shortage in kitchen and wait staff. There is a permanent help wanted sign in its window. Perhaps taking reservations and guaranteeing showing up by taking a credit card first might help with greeting and accommodating the limited number of tables this restaurant can handle courteously and politely. If you do miss the first seating, don't be offended if the host/ hostess doesn't suggest waiting at the bar and enjoying a cocktail or glass of wine while you wait for your later seating. Be proactive and ask for permission to sit at the bar. Don't be offended if the bartender is curt and impatient. It's difficult to keep a good efficient staff. We're not sure if the food is good. As we were treated rudely upon entering, and they'd reached their initial seating capacity, our questions were answered impatiently and coldly. We did leave our name to return after 35 minutes. We left the restaurant and stood outside to reassess the situation. We decided it wasn't worth the attitude. So we crossed the street and had a welcoming and delicious dinner with drinks and desserts at Crate which we highly recommend. Once at our table we waited 40+ min before I could flag down a server. During which the table of 10+ next to us left, they cleaned the table, sat 10 more people and served them the fish bowl. The server served every other table in the restaurant before talking to us, including checking on two of the tables near us again to make sure they had everything included in the meal. Finally after every single other person in the restaurant was served and checked on, the waitress walked by and stated " did the other waitress serve you?". I said no and began going over our order which included a non lactose meal which the waitress stated " I can read..." and walked away. Only to then be brought not only the wrong plate but not be brought bread or corn. I had to point it out and the waitress stated "oh, I guess you're right." Then clearly overheard that they were out of fish, clearly the reason my wife was given the wrong meal. I again want to be clear that the table next to us had their entire meal start to finish already at this point and this was a prearranged meal that should have been served with everyone else at that fish boil time. It was clear that our server would rather die than speak to me as I raised my hand again and again every time she passed by. Finally she stopped by the table and said that they were cooking our food in the back and that it would be out shortly. I asked for an explanation as the entire meal should have been cooked in the fish boil and not separately. The waitress laughed and said "it's boiled in water out there, it's boiled in water in the back, what's the difference..." my wife then said we need to speak to a manager since that's not the experience. Another person stepped over 5-10 min later and said let me explain that we are cooking it and it will be out shortly, confused we asked if it was cooked in the fish boil and if she was the manager, which she said no. Finally the manager did come over, however after an hour and a half my wife had already left. I felt completely unwelcome, like we were the problem. The manager did comp the meal however stated that "what did we want there was fish...?" again my wife never received her correct meal as they were out of fish. The setting absolutely lived up to the hype, and that alone earns it a star. We arrived a little early for our reservation and decided to grab a drink at the bar. My mom simply asked if they had any watermelon or pineapple seltzers, and instead of answering, the bartender just handed her a drink menu and walked away. It was a small interaction, but it came across as dismissive, so we decided not to order drinks. We were seated shortly after in a wonderful spot in the garden. We had our dog with us, and it was the perfect outdoor setting for her to relax while we enjoyed dinner. Our server was pleasant, but she didn't seem very attentive or able to read the table. We started with the Brussels sprouts, which were delicious and probably the highlight of the meal. We know this restaurant is especially known for its whitefish and lobster boil. After tasting our meals, my mother said she wished she had ordered the whitefish since we'd heard such amazing things about it. Unfortunately, when it became obvious that we weren't enjoying our food, our server never asked if something was wrong or if we'd like to try something else. The crab Rangoon dip was just okay. The lobster bisque was completely flavorless--the worst lobster bisque I've ever had, and I order it whenever it's on a menu. The sage butter gnocchi was equally bland and lacked any real flavor. My mom ordered the ribeye, and she said it tasted more like a sirloin and was totally overcooked. It lacked the rich flavor you'd expect from a ribeye and had quite a bit of fat. She only ate a few bites before giving most of it to the dog. The vegetables (I believe asparagus or broccolini) weren't good, and the au gratin potatoes were equally disappointing. The only real win was my son's chicken tenders. He's an extremely picky eater, and he genuinely enjoyed them. What disappointed us most was how the situation was handled. When our server checked back, she asked how everything was, and we replied, "It's alright." Later, when she saw that our plates were still mostly full and asked if we wanted boxes, we said no. That would have been the perfect opportunity to ask if something was wrong or if there was anything they could do. Instead, the conversation ended there and the check was placed on the table. At that point, we just wanted to leave. Between the underwhelming service, the bland food, and the high prices, the experience simply wasn't worth it. We left feeling incredibly disappointed, annoyed and hungry. It's unfortunate because the location and atmosphere are beautiful, and we truly wanted this restaurant to be a highlight of our trip. Sadly, if we make it back to Baileys Harbor, we won't be returning.
