Second time at CHOP but first time sitting upstairs which was gorgeous. People will be slightly dressed up but nothing too extravagant, seems like it's ok to come in dressed casually as well. This place gets super busy on Memorial Day weekend but they do a great job ensuring that they are fully staffed and can churn out food and drinks quickly. We ordered the 8 ounce New York strip plus CHOP steak salad (but make it Caesar). We both got cups of soup (lobster and crab bisque or garlic potato) which were incredible. Paired with a delicious cherry sour and an old fashioned. Exactly what we wanted after a good day of exploring. Make sure to go between 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM to get their $34.95 three course dinner special (soup or salad, main, and dessert). read more

With high hopes I began my dining experience at Chop, but my hopes were dashed by the conclusion of the meal. Dined on a Saturday. Arrived just at opening and was seated promptly. Had I arrived any later, I would have had to wait for a table, which would have been terrible. There is no good space to sit and wait for a table; the bar is tiny; the bar abuts the front door, and is consequently very cold in winter; the tiny, cold bar is filled with patrons standing around waiting for a table. My darling wife and I were seated in the second floor dining room. The room was clean, and the atmosphere was decent... when the room was at-and-below 25% capacity. As the room began to fill, which didn't take long, it also didn't take long to realize that the layout of tables was poor. My table was far too close to the other tables; every table was too close to other tables. There is also no barrier in between tables. So, a large room, crammed with tables, each of which is too close to the other tables. Not great at all. And, thanks to the cramped quarters, I could smell the vile cheese smells from other diner's dishes which wrecked my experience. We ordered crab cakes. They were crispy outside, and the crab filling was moist, but there was so little lemon-garlic aioli that the cakes were rather bland. Furthermore, there were only two crab cakes serves, each of which was rather small. Drink orders placed with the waitress took a very long time to reach the table. The brandy old fashioned (sweet) that I ordered was not sweet at all and there was an overpowering amount of orange. A failure of this sort should not happen at a Wisconsin fine-dining establishment. The house Chop Salad was boring; a bunch of iceberg lettuce, too finely chopped, covered in ranch dressing, and lackluster bacon. My wife's filet mignon steak was appropriately prepared. The crispy duck, which I ordered, was served with a delicious cherry sauce but there was far too little sauce on the plate. The duck itself, when not coupled with any sauce, was rather boring. Also terribly boring was the bed of wild rice served with the duck. Why did you give me the duck's food? Feed that stuff to the duck and let me eat the bird served with a better side dish! Service was too slow and inattentive for my tastes. Every server looked like they were born in a foreign land, and I struggled to understand my waitress's English-as-a-second language. I don't need to go back. There is better dining available in Door County, especially given the prices asked. read more

Staff were well informed, so they made excellent recommendations. We sat on the upstairs patio - love the view and breeze. The steak could not have been better. The only comparable I've had was at a far more expensive restaurant. My wife was delighted with her carrot cake. My chocolate mousse was good but not exceptional. The house red wine was fabulous. Still just a wow! experience. Good service, great prices, excellent food, lively vibe, and reliable overall. We took advantage of the early dining menu and both got the Filet Mignon. It was outstanding. The potatoes are also excellent, and the salad is one of my all time favorites anywhere. We got our carrot cake desserts to go and were able to recover enough to share one of them a bit after we got home. It was decadently delicious. The diners next to us had lobster and the Chicken Schnitzel, which both looked delicious, and they seemed to be enjoying them. As a man of a certain age, I didn't want to make the reel for a Progressive commercial, so I didn't ask them how their meal was (or suggest what they should get haha). If the weather is nice, the patio here is a great spot to sip a glass of wine. Both the upstairs and downstairs are great settings, and the food is as good as you will expect. read more

The first impression of chop is lovely. Was warmly greeted, and shown to our table.we had made a reservation. Service started off great. We ordered cocktails before dinner and their dirty martini was very good. We ordered an appetizer which was Barada bruschetta that was fantastic! Moving on, we ordered our dinners. I had a steak and my husband had I believe, some sort of short ribs and a wine sauce? I wish I could remember exactly what it was. It was a little wine forward. He said it was OK wasn't great. This is where things kind of go sideways. I had a coupon from the restaurant for a free glass of wine. I showed our server the coupon and said oh I have this. Could I get a free glass of wine? And he said I don't know how to do that. And walked away. I had a second server come over and I said do you know how to use this coupon for a free glass of wine? She said no I don't really understand how to do that. Not once did either one of them say let me get the manager let me look into it for you. I don't know why establishment would send you a coupon to use for your dinner and then not honor it. Also, our server never asked if we wanted another glass of wine, another cocktail, anything else for dinner? We were just left alone until the bill came. They also gave me a chipped water glass. I don't understand how they couldn't see a huge chip missing from the glass with a crack in it. I'm just glad I didn't cut my lip. The ambience is beautiful. But the service was completely lacking. The food was just OK. If somebody would've at least tried to honor my coupon, or asked if we wanted anything else with our dinner, they could've upsold us. Sadly, no effort was made on their part. I absolutely love CHOP! A place other restaurants should strive to be like! I was introduced at the suggestion of a member of my group for a girls weekend getaway to Door County. In our advance planning she mentioned the early dining menu and the need for reservations, which we took part in. Our group was here on the last Saturday in September with a 5pm reservation. Hostess promptly seated us in the corner booth on the main floor once I checked in for our reservation. While most took part in the early dining menu, patrons can also choose from the regular menu and some of our party did that. All ladies in my group raved about their food. I harbored a suspicion that the early dining menu, at a cost of $30, could have extremely small portions. Not so! I was ready to be through my beef burgundy before making the push to finish. The soup and dessert were perfectly timed and portioned companions. This has got to be the best deal in town. Please CHOP keep this just the way it is until I can return! This was honestly top 10 steaks i've ever had, in fact it made me remember why I love steak so passionately. For reference, I ordered a medium rare 12oz New York strip steak with the garlic butter (for those who need reccomendations, get this). The standard bread appetitzer was also pleasant as it wasn't too filling, and the butter it came with paired super well. The service was honestly super good, much better than a typical good restaurant. We came a bit earlier than our reservation (~19 minutes early) and were still seated immediately. We were helped very quickly, and the staff all seemed genuinely joyful and willing to help. My water was also consistently filled which I appreciated as I tend to unintentionally chug my water... The resturant itself was very nice. It was fancy but not in an imposing pretentious way that some steak places are. It gives the feel that you could show up in a fancy suit or beach clothes and still have a totally normal experience. The temperature inside was nice and chilly so thankfully I didn't find myself getting too warm while chowing down. Obviously this place is a bit pricy (around 40 bucks a person at least) but its definitely worth it. read more

We've made an annual winter birthday tradition of heading up to Sister Bay for the weekend, and dinner here is always a highlight. We make a point to come at least once or twice each trip! Nice, clean and friendly service. As for the food, it was ok. For a higher price point restaurant in the area that specializes in steaks I expect them to know what temperature medium rare should be. My steak came out medium well instead, way over cooked and when I told the waitress she just asked if it was "good enough" for me to eat. The atmosphere is beautiful, and the food looked excellent. The drink menu offered a good selection of wine and cocktails. Although our bartender was fine, the standout was definitely their mule. There's also an upstairs area, but we stayed in the bar section. For anyone visiting Door County, known for its scenic beauty and charming towns, Chop is a good choice. Clearly overbooked on Valentine's Day. We arrived at our reservation time and waited in a crowded hallway for 20 minutes. When we got seated it was also very crowded in the seating area. We arrived at 7p and I was told that our reservation was at 6:30pm, but the hostess was great and got us seated in the beautiful downstairs room that had somewhat of a speakeasy feel, very nice! We are big steak eaters so the bar was already set pretty high and Chop exceeded our expectations! The steaks were cooked perfectly, starter salads and soup was delicious, smashed potatoes were buttery, and to top it all off the desserts were fantastic. We came in for their Early Dining Menu which is quite a good deal.  It only lasts from 5:00 - 5:30pm and you will need a reservation because the openings go fast.  A big crowd came right in at 5pm, us amongst them, and we were rewarded with an excellent 3 course meal for $27.95.  Adam was our friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient server.     Wife had a cup of their cream of potato soup, the salmon entree, and carrot cake. I had their house salad, the NY strip steak, and key lime pie.  Every item was delicious and tip-top excellent quality.  I also got bearnaise butter with my steak, and the entrees are not skimped down just because it's an Early Dining promotional special.    The bus service was quite attentive and the staff kept our table cleared of finished dishes.   Adam, a 9 year veteran of this 10 year old restaurant, was also very attentive.  They also have a second floor and it was completely full like the first floor, when I took a walk to have a look after our meal.   Nice upbeat pop music was on, and a vibrant full bar was also in view up front.   Chop is a delightful, vibrant, and high quality Sister Bay dinner venue and I highly recommend this place. read more

Beautiful and lovely location with the outdoor seating truly the highlight. My husband and I both had the filet - my husband did the add in of shrimp which he did not get until we were done eating. We brought it to our waitresses attention 2 times once when the food was brought and again when she checked on us. She never came back to see if we received. We then stopped the water pouring person who must have told her. The waitress then came over and said she had checked with the manager and apologized. We finally received it when we were both done eating our entrees. Never checking on how our food was. Had they noticed both my husband and I had large portions of our filets that were all grizzle. Not certain if the cut of meat was truly a filet. If it was it was a poor cut. The cook was good with what they were dealing with for the cut. They had a few opportunities to make things right and did not. Perhaps they are working through their newness but with that brings opportunity and how they work through their growing pains. We each ordered a French onion soup with our meals that we agreed was not very flavorful. Great cheese, but was definitely missing something. I love French onion soup so I was definitely disappointed. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly and tasted great with the Chop butter. Loved the potatoes. The ribeye was super undercooked (we asked for medium rare and it came VERY rare). The waiter actually recognized it before we asked and put it back on the grill for us. New 3.99% service fee is terrible. We been going to CHOP 10 years and just had a nice dinner with our Friends on 4/29/2023 and got an unexpected charge added to our bill for 3.99% the waiter said it's a new fee for all checks and it doesn't matter if you pay cash or use a credit card. They have a sign out front saying it's due to supply chain costs. Clearly if your costs are higher you raise the menu prices which CHOP has also done. CHOP has always been a solid choice for a nice dinner in Sister Bay, however this fee is disconcerting and making us rethink our next visit. read more

Honestly, it was the terrible service and vengeful staff that ruined our dinner which is what earns this 1-star review. My husband called ahead to grab a table on the rooftop deck and when we arrived, we were told by the hostess that the staff never received our call. It's one thing to run out of seats, but it's another thing entirely to accuse guests of lying. Terrible start to the evening, but we did wind up being seated at a large outdoor table. Unfortunately, because we were a couple, the staff kept trying to rush us out from dinner service because we were not the size of group typically seated at a table for five. Instead, they asked us to take our dessert in a doggie bag. The dinner was equally disappointing; the food was fine (sides were very small but steak was generally tender though overcooked), though the topping was not the sauce we expected (it was compounded butter). When we asked the waitstaff about this, we were scolded for misunderstanding the dish (being scolded by waitstaff was a first for us). When the waitress who scolded us requested we simply take our dessert (ice cream) to go so we could release our seats to other diners (we had dined for a total of 45 minutes, which was when we were told we'd overstayed our welcome), my husband asked for the check from exasperation and decided not to tip the staff. Note, we ALWAYS tip - and indeed, I felt a little bad despite having experienced the worst service we'd ever had. However, this wound up being well-deserved - at the end of our meal (we never got the dessert we paid for by this point) I rose to use the restroom, stopping only to ask a waitress where the restroom was located and to inquire about the dessert (we had booked a boat cruise and needed to leave, had already waited 30 mins by this point, which was roughly 40% of our total time spent in the restaurant), the waitress asked me where we were seated so that she could send it. I told her, to which she replied that since I had not tipped (note, my husband was paying for our meal and made this decision), I was not welcome back at the restaurant and was subsequently publicly berated for not tipping staff. There was, of course, no interest at all in the reasons we were so disappointed that we felt we could not tip in the first place. At this point there was nothing to do but turn around and leave, meal unfinished. If nothing else, the waitress I spoke with had completely justified my husband's rationale for not tipping, ironically. This was, hands down, the worst dining experience I could have imagined in my wildest dreams. "Unprofessional" is the best word befitting the staff. read more
