I've had the shawarma here and it's phenomenal. This time around I got the kebab platter and some fries on the side. I must say, the kebab was juicy and absolutely to die for! In my experience kebab tends to be served kinda too dry but that was not the case here. The grilled jalapeno was a great addition too, added a great kick to the meat for sure. Service time was reasonable. It's not fast food! But it's food made with love and I loved every bite! The ambiance was also nice and the place was very spacious. Going to start off with this - this place has the best hummus ever!! It's smooth, seasoned perfectly, and sooo garlicky. I put it on everything. It was a nice day out so we utilized their big outdoor patio space. our order: baba ganouj (it's salsa-like instead of the creamy tahini dip) which was quite refreshing falafels - it was a bit over-fried/fried in old oil so i tasted some bitterness but other than that, i think it's a solid falafel mint lemonade - on the sweeter side but really good! lamb chop - seasoned well and very tender! shawarma plate - more rice than meat, there's a tangy component which i think is a pomegranate molasses Service is a bit slow/not super hospitable, but will come back for the hummus! read more

It took us 45 minutes to get our food, and that was only because we said something about it. The food came out lukewarm, not even fresh. I honestly wish I could've at least microwaved it. We ordered the mixed chicken and meat shawarma ($16) and the Jerusalem mixed grill ($25). The mixed chicken and meat shawarma came out lukewarm. The Jerusalem mixed grill comes with a salad or hummus. We ordered hummus but they got our order wrong. We also ordered a baba ghanoush that never came. Overall, the food was just okay. There are definitely better middle eastern places in Austin. To their credit, the owner was apologetic and comped the mixed chicken and meat shawarma. Definitely not worth the wait or the poor service. I really wanted to support this restaurant since the owners are presumably Palestinian and it's a small business. I went a few days after they opened for lunch. They did a nice job with the decor. The place was pretty empty, just us and one other table. Nobody else showed up while we were there. I decided to try this spot since I noticed it was new and I pass by often. When we entered, I was totally surprised by the patio out back which overlooked a creek which was a cool ambience. The waitress was decently nice and food came out promptly but as it got busier, she was too busy to check on us. The food was quite good and fragrant, though I found the hummus a little salty while my lamb tekka and the rice were more bland though the dips had plenty of flavor. I expected more grilled vegetables as the menu mentioned tomatoes but we just got a couple pieces of onions. The rice to dish ratio was a bit off had we not got other dips and sides. read more

The food at Old Jerusalem was a bit of a mixed experience. The meats in the mixed grill were excellent. The fresh baked bread was delicious and hot. The rice, though, was uninteresting and I found the hummus a little bland but still ok. The cucumber and tomato salad seemed to have no seasoning at all. To be fair, others at the table thought it better than I did. The baklava (they have multiple variations) was good. The biggest downside was the service. It was quite slow and a bit disorganized. None of the servers were particularly friendly. I know the restaurant is still pretty new but it seems it should be better by now. The outdoor patio is awesome. We've been to many incarnations of restaurants at this location and Old Jerusalem has really made the patio comfortable. We live in NW Hills and will definitely be back. I just hope that the service improves so the overall dining experience matches up to the food. read more

After eating here twice, this is fast becoming one of my favorite middle eastern eateries in Austin. The place always looks clean, and organized with pleasing & welcoming decor. The food is innovative, the baba ghanoush with walnuts & the freshly baked bread are favorites, the meat hummus is good and their falafel is outstanding. I've been hearing a lot about this place so I decided to come try it. It is located at the old building of Jan Chi Korean food which was one of my favorite places before they closed. The inside was similar, open floors and plenty of seating. We went for lunch on a Sunday and there weren't many people there. I love Mediterranean food but have never tried Palestinian cuisine specifically so I was excited to try this new place. We got the hummus to start and it was delicious! The pita was big and plentiful though I wish we would have gotten regular veggies to go with the hummus as well (this is just personal preference). For the mains my friend got chicken and beef mixed with rice and she enjoyed it. I got the lamb sandwich and unfortunately I don't like tomato onion or pickle and that's the 3 things that came with the lamb so I essentially just ate bread and lamb which is okay! I improvised and added some of the leftover hummus. I do wish it would have came with a little side of rice or a little side salad. The side of the sandwich was pickled veggies and they were very strong unfortunately a little too strong for me. Other than that the staff kept checking in on us and I'm very glad to have tried it. All of this is personal preference and I know I can be a little picky which is why I am not taking any stars off :-) I can't wait to come back and try some of their pizzas! Glad to see Austin is getting more diverse cuisines. read more

Old Jerusalem Restaurant is owned presumably by Palestinians as there's an Arab quarter in Jerusalem. My husband and I both ordered the shawarma platters to go. He didn't think it was as good as Peace Bakery, which is also owned by Palestinians. I did think the shawarma platter was a little dry. The baba ganoush was different. It tasted like it was missing Tahini. My husband said it looked like their children were working there, so service was slow for the soft opening. read more

When I saw this restaraunt had 4.5 stars on Google last month (now dropped to 4.1), I was excited to have a new middle-eastern food place so nearby. I sadly did not catch that there were only a few reviews. Now... I realize they are just starting out, but overall it was not a positive dinner experience for the entire table. I will share the highlights - not only the concerns. First, our sever was very pleasant, but not at all attentative, even though she had only 3 tables to wait. Next, to our disappoint, they were out of ALL their shawarma plates. Another big issue was the bread servered with the appetizer - while the hummus and salad were EXCELLENT, they were offered with cold and dry pita that I can pick up at HEB, and it would be fresher. This is while other establishments bring endless, "hot out of the oven" khurbs (soft pocket bread) with za-atar oil or other dipping sauces. Also the sever presented the hummus and salad as the appetizer for the ENTIRE 4-top. I didn't mind sharing, but we actually realized soon after that those sides were not a perk, but were the pairings for the two of us ordering meat plates. Even with the appetizer to keep us busy, there was an excessive amount of time for our entrees to arrive. I am accepting of that at a newLt open restaraunt, but we were not offered more water during the wait, or at any time throughout the meal. The mixed kabobs (medium-rare) and a veggie plate finally arrived with one plate missing all 3 of the grill veggies, and the kabobs were WAAAAY overdone. Very overcooked meat develops an irony flavor, so both meat plates failed miserably. The rice with chopped pine nuts, however, was DELICIOUS - Well-seasoned, with the nuts adding a nice crunch. The fresh baba and the falafels were great, although I suspect (as common) their falafels are not made in-house. That said, I may be wrong, but the grape leaves and tahini seemed from restaurant supply as well. Prices were inline with what we are used to, yet not given the food and service quality provided. read more

First the food, it's great and on point. The stuff from the oven is just wonderful and not many Mediterranean places doing it. The bread is freshly made in their oven. The zaatar pie and meat pies are wonderful. The hummus is balanced and the chile on top is wonderful. The baba ganush is special, you haven't experienced it this way. Magduose also nice. Chicken sharawama good. Falafel is the star of the show. A surprise hit they don't even highlight. Kofta also juicy and on point with the flavor. Now it's a soft opening and they are learning. If you want great food that is home style and authentic, please go. Just have time and patience. They are very receptive and they do want you to enjoy. They know they have to get employees and ramp up service. It's clear that they care. There is growing pains however. If you know waiting is going to bother you, give them a little time to adjust before trying them. There will be many who harp on this, but it's clear they are going to work it out. read more

The buffet is plentiful and had so many dishes, it was impossible to try everything. Yet everything I tasted was delicious. The hummus was creamy; the lamb with string beans on rice was tasty, as well as the okra with lamb; an eggplant salad was terrific. The mint lemonade was the perfect compliment to the food. The enormous selection of baklavah was a great end to the meal. The music was lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful. There were families dining with children which gave the Old Jerusalem a warm, inviting ambiance. This was our first and last time here. We arrived and weren't sure if we needed to wait to be seated, so we asked and a server and she said to seat ourselves. The same server brought us menus. Then nothing. We saw that it wasn't crazy busy but it was about half full so we wanted to be patient. After 30 minutes she came back and said she had forgotten about us and asked if we were ready to order, which we were. We ordered two appetizers and three entrees. They brought us part of the appetizers and part of two of the entrees saying the other one would be right out. After 20 more minutes we still didn't recieve the third entree or our sides or the bread for the appetizers. Overall the only good thing we got were the falafel, everything else was ok. My friend and I had a dinner date at Old Jerusalem tonight, and we were very impressed. I got the vegetarian platter, which had a great assortment of appetizers & spreads and comes with freshly baked flatbread. It was a large amount of food and a real bargain at $12.99, and everything was delicious. I will definitely get that platter again next time I visit. My friend got a lamb wrap with the side cucumber/tomato salad, which she loved and could only eat half (and took the other half home). The restaurant is very spacious and quiet, which I appreciated, since so many restaurants these days are so loud you can barely hold a conversation. Service was very pleasant and friendly. Parking is also plentiful and easy. I will miss Jan Chi, but I am really happy Old Jerusalem has brought very reasonably priced Middle Eastern food to a part of town that doesn't have many other similar options. read more

Both food and service was amazing, and I don't give out compliments like that unless it's truly well earned. The hummus was a perfect balance of rich and creamy texture with just the right amount of tang. The pita bread was delicate and chewy which does not happen spontaneously. We also had the chicken and beef shawarma, it was perfectly seasoned, cooked, and sliced. They definitely know their way around the kitchen. Hands down one of the best Mediterranean restaurants in Austin. I will be going back again with hubby and friends. read more

It's a new restaurant and so I think some of the negative reviews I've read are probably a part of their growing pains. My experience was really great though.
