Our family was visiting Austin just as a winter storm was approaching. There was a freezing drizzle in the morning but most of the afternoon was dry and the temperature was dropping. A lot of places were closing early so that staff can stay home until the storm passed. As such, we struggled to find restaurants with dine-in option. Thankfully our local friend suggested Kabobzi and we had a very pleasant late lunch. Our friend had the chicken shawarma pita sandwich whereas our family shared the lamb kebab platter with hummus, salad, and rice. It was plenty of food because it was a late lunch and we wanted to save space for dinner. The lamb was tender and flavorful. The complimentary pita bread was fresh, soft, and fluffy. read more

This place is listed under two names, Kabobzi and Phoenician Resto, but I guess I'll put my review here since the website seems to be based on this one. This place is so unassuming from the outside but it is EXCELLENT Lebanese food! Everything I've had is fantastic, but on a recent visit, the Splash Garlic Chicken blew me away. It's $42 and it's listed as feeding two, which can sound a little steep but it comes with three sides and unless you are crazy starving, it's really more the serving size for three people. When you sit down, they give you a basket of fluffy puffy fresh pita and a plate of zaatar and olive oil. This bread is FANTASTIC, and I challenge you to not eat too much too quickly. No seriously, don't fill up too early on this, because the rest of the food is great. Hummus excellent. Babaganouj good. Lamb kebob incredible. But my mind keeps going back to the Splash Garlic Chicken. It's so tender and perfectly grilled. It comes with these potato medallions that are so creamy inside. And the whole thing is smothered in this amazing creamy lemony garlic sauce tableside. It's also just such a unique dish that I've not seen at other Mediterranean places which sets Kabobzi apart. Great service too - Julian kept refilling our fresh pita basket and brought us more of the delicious zaatar oil dip that we couldn't get enough of. After coming to an event at Kabobzis for our Lebanese family reunion lunch, my husband and I couldn't wait to comeback and try other dishes and indulge in the amazing pita bread. I was hoping it would taste as good as the kibbee and tabouli and hummus. To our surprise, everything we ordered tasted even batter ! Coming from Houston and knowing our homemade Lebanese food well, finding a restaurant that could satisfy our Mediterranean cravings has not been easy. At kabobIs, we have success! The chicken and gyro platter was delish. We ordered rice and hummus for our 2 sides. Since we also ordered the Lebanese Chicken schwarmawe had a third side which we got the tabouli. I was very excited about coming back to try something new. We ordered the splash garlic chicken (for 2), with hummus, baba ghanouj, and rice. Do not get this unless you love garlic and lemon sauces. It tasted great, but we were expecting to see more chicken pieces. They bring it out on a sizzling skillet so everything smells great and you get real hungry real fast. The gyro meat was fantastic, the beef was a bit dry, as well as their beef kafta was also a bit dry. It isn't super rare for kafta to be a bit dry, but this was more dry than I've had before. 6 months I've lived in Austin right across from this place and I can't believe I haven't been inside. From the friendly service to the incredible dishes this is an absolute must. Walking in being greeted immediately was very nice since it was my first time here and the seating I wasn't so sure about. When we sat down and they handed us our menus i was very surprised when I opened it up and they both sides of the menu light up like a iPad screen. When they came around to take our order we weren't exactly ready and they told us that they had a QR code to scan that not only had pictures of every meal but a more detailed description of what the menu offered. I have never been to a place that offered it was very surprised! But I have to say that the star of the show was definitely their food. The Gyro fries were seriously too good. They used this amazing seasoning sauce on the fries and on top placed a bed of gyro meat with tzatziki sauce and it was only $14 for a big plate of it. on top of it all we walked out spending less than $40 with tip. My Lebanese banker shared this gem with me, and I've been back twice in just one week... and I'm longing for more. Wanna go? It's owned and run by an attractive family of GREAT cooks. The food tastes home made. The atmosphere is super friendly. Don't be discouraged by its location on Guadalupe. Odds are you will find parking right on the premises. Do you like baba ganoush? I think Kabobzi serves the best. I'm stuck on it and cannot imagine visiting this restaurant without ordering it every single time. My paternal grandparents were from Lebanon, and my grandmother was a sensational cook. This baba ganoush was better than hers. It's served with small warm pita bread that's fresh out of the oven. Pair that with an Almaza, an excellent cold Lebanese beer or a glass of wine. The lamb kabobs are flavorful, moist and served on a bed of rice with a choice of sides that can include tabule (oddly free of bulghur wheat but delicious, nevertheless), and the coveted, prized, amazing baba ganoush. This is healthful food that is very reasonably priced and served at a central location that is friendly and even fun. read more

We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door. The woman who greeted us was friendly and seemed to be running the front of the restaurant all on her own. She cleaned our tables, brought our menus and water, and took our orders, all while waiting on the other patrons at the same time. I was part of a group of 5. I ordered grape leaves to start since they are one of my favorites. They were warm and delicious, with just the right amount of tartness at the finish. I loved that they were served with Kalamata olives. I was especially glad that I ordered them when the rest of the table's dinner arrived, minus mine. I had made some dietary modifications to my order, so this was understandable. Everyone else at the table complimented the quality of the food. I ordered the beef shawarma bowl. The combination of warm shawarma with cold Greek salad in the same bowl was interesting and efficient. I appreciated that they took my food modifications- no cucumbers, onion, or garlic sauce, without missing a beat and delivered beautifully. This place opened in the neighborhood over a year ago, but I had not yet been in because the outside is less than welcoming. After looking at the menu, we decided to give it a try. The food was good, but a little pricey for what it was. Some traditional Mediterranean sides like tabbouleh were all $2 extra when added on to plates. I chose the chicken shawarma plate with Greek salad. The salad was just basic greens, not what I expected. My friend got a wrap, which was a little dry but tasty. Service was prompt and friendly, but the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired. Very sterile feeling environment even though they've added some things to the walls. The seating and chairs were super basic, as was the limited decor. Really not a place I'd want to spend much time in or go out for dinner. I'm extremely disappointed with my recent experience at this restaurant. I placed a large catering order four days in advance for a work event, with a confirmed pickup time of 11:15 AM on July 25th. When I arrived at the restaurant, no one had any idea what I was talking about - the order hadn't even been started. This was a time-sensitive order for an office event, and I was initially told it would take about an hour to prepare. I received conflicting updates on delivery 2 hours afterward: first told 20 minutes, then 13 minutes by the delivery driver--but the food didn't actually arrive until over 3 hours later. This completely derailed the schedule for an entire office full of people who were expecting lunch two hours earlier. To make matters worse, I had specifically requested at least 95 pitas, and we ran out almost immediately, so it's clear the order wasn't fulfilled accurately either. For a catering order that cost over $1,000, this level of unprofessionalism is unacceptable. Nothing was done by any of the owners or managers that I have emailed and called. What's most frustrating is that this wasn't my first time ordering from here - I've had good experiences in the past, which makes this all the more disappointing. I was really craving Mediterranean food and this meal did not disappoint! We initially had to wait a few minutes because there was no one there to get us seats. However, for the rest of the meal, our server took great care of us! We ordered a mixed plate, two chicken shawarma platters and a chicken wrap. Everything was fantastic and paired well together. The chicken was juicy, succulent and served on a bed of rice, it was something to die for. I loved the different sauces they had and a special shout-out to their baba ganoush. She had about 4 tables when we arrived and 2-3 more parties came after us. For her being the only server she was good and quick. The spicy hummus was tasty! Just the right amount of spice. Meat rolls were super tasty just wish there was a sauce to go with them. Chicken skillet plate was so good! The chicken was tender and cooked to perfection. Three Stars are considered "A- OK" and I enjoyed Kabobzi as an A-OK restaurant. I'm in Austin for Business and I drove past this small restaurant in this strip mall this morning. I'm always up to Indian, Thai and Halal food. So for dinner we made our way over. The store front is small but there is plenty enough sitting. The menu is clear and posted above the cashier as images of each platter or dish. I ordered the beef Shawarma platter over rice and humus. It was served quickly along with the humus which was served with half of a Lebanese flatbread (pita bread?) placed in a zip lock baggie. The Shawarma wasn't what I expected which is long thin slices of marinated beef that has been cooked on a spit. This was very tasty but it lacked the char of the open flame and the slices of meat were more like pieces of meat that were braised in a sauce. And no pita or flat bread came with the meal. The humus was delicious but I had to request more flatbread to eat the side dish. What could be done differently? The flat bread should be served hot and whole in a basket. Every plater should have at least one bread, and the humus needs two. The shawarma has a great flavor but texture and shape are being sacrificed in the preparation. read more

Very poor management, and deceptive marketing. I used to love this place. I'd take a 30 minute drive to it just for some of that shwarma. I placed an order online today for it thru Yelp, and got the platter instead. I double checked Yelp, and next to the only beef shawarma listed is photos of the wrap, reviews of the wrap, and the words "Beef Shawarma Protein". I let the cashier know it must've been some kind of mixup, and asked if they could put it in a wrap. The cashier was very polite and took it to the back, but the manager ran out and intercepted it. I had to spend 10 minutes explaining to this guy the situation, and the whole time he insisted that he had no control over their own Yelp posting. I'm pretty sure it was just an accidental oversight, maybe the person in charge of setting it up assigned the wrong photo to the order. But the manager wouldn't even concede that it was deceptive to have photos of the wrap next to the listing for the platter. They did eventually fix it after a ton of back and forth, but the manager's attitude to the whole situation was bizzare, considering that the plate is apparently 3 bucks more expensive then the wrap anyways. read more

I pass this place every day on my commute to work and gave it a shot during my lunch hour. Definitely a commemorable Mediterranean restaurant! The hummus and falafels are the perfect combo; not to forget how texturally great the falafel is itself. The hubs ordered the Mix Grill Combo, and the kafta was undeniably the STAR. Some kaftas are ruined with excess oregano, but Kabobzi has mastered subtly spicing - powerful yet delicate flavor. I had the chicken shawarma over tabouli, also delish. But dessert is always the best part of the meal, especially if it's Baklava! Kabobzi's baklava not only is huge, to the point that it resembles the size and filling amount of a finger sandwich. On the chance I had some business in Austin, I wanted to find a gyro place close to the hotel. Fortunately Kabobzi was within walking distance so I went ahead and grabbed dinner. People here are super friendly and down to earth. They are also helpful with menu items as well. I went ahead and snagged a traditional gyro and fries. Everything came out to a little over $10. Even after walking back to the hotel, the taste and temperature were spot on. I start to drool each time I think about the gyro I had. The tzatziki sauce and meat was flavorful!
