I managed to do two hours of high intensity fitness today. Before going down this fitness journey, I stopped by HEB for a snack. Right at the front of the store was The Kosher store. I had no idea initially that I was in The Kosher Store. My snack de jour was tuna salad. After I landed in The Kosher Store, I explored various kosher items such breads and meats. This kosher shopping experience was pleasant and informative. The Kosher Store manager said while they at a wide selection of kosher items, they also had many other kosher items sprinkled throughout the store. As a FYI, food is considered kosher if it complies with Jewish dietary laws, including permitted species, proper slaughter, separation of meat and dairy, and careful preparation under rabbinical supervision. The Kosher Store was small and therefore, easy to navigate. The store manager was friendly, and extremely knowledgeable about kosher items. I purchased my tuna salad which was inexpensive and quite tasty. read more

Great service, good quality food that is prepared in a Kosher environment. No dairy is used in their kitchen since they serve meat, but they also have great meatless options like the in-house freshly made falafel and egg salad, both of which are offered à la carte or as a sandwich/wrap. The latkes are a must-try! Worth mentioning: very fair, reasonable pricing. A fresh side salad for $4 or pasta/egg salad for $1-3? Heck yeah! read more

Pitiful! Shame on HEB. They does not care about stocking this part of the store for any of the holidays. It is 2 days before Rosh Hashanah and NO Zomick's round raisin challah. Last week I was there and NO kosher meat or chicken at all. The manager of the HEB store doesn't care and keeps on blaming the bad selections on "the warehouse" who she says ignores her orders and "sends what they want". I am here in Austin 30 years and it goes from bad to worse. NO Batempte New Pickles, sometimes no SauerKraut and a terrible selection of meats when they DO have them :-) Living in diaspora is living in Austin Texas! Wow, incredible Kosher store in the city. Me and my girlfriend were surprised to find one. Since she has a Kosher background of upbringing, we stopped here for some food items to cook back at some of her relatives house. We purchased Steaks, Pork, Chicken, Fish, and many more. Place is clean, and everything is freshly made. Compared to some of our Kosher stores back home in California. These guys keep it together. I also love the Taste of the salad wraps. Got there 10 minutes before they closed (a Google search indicated 6:30pm but it ended up closing at 6pm - no fault of the restaurant). The cashier rudely indicated they would not sell us any hot food once it was our turn in line. Given my reasonable nature towards others, I probably would have understood but that damn tone was unnecessary. Also, we were waiting in line about 10 minutes and the cashier *could* have let people in the line know. The "restaurant" is inside the HEB and the seating is a bit awkward. Tables and chairs are packed tight in the space. The seating area is near a freezer and facing the kitchen with very little ability to walk around. No windows to see out of either. Food seemed reasonably priced. It is nice to have a restaurant inside a grocery store, especially specialty food (kosher). *disclaimer: we did not eat any food from here so this is purely a review of service and ambiance :-) read more

This is a really unique location for Kosher food and I've never really seen it done in this way before. The product offered is great. I had the Brisket and the remains of the Reuben sandwich and I'm still dreaming of both. That's how good this place is. Prices are fair in comparison to what I'm used to in Toronto. When I first saw "The Kosher Store" on Yelp, I swore it was a joke. Upon arrival, I was shocked to see that they actually do have a little cultural pocket for the Kosher folk. The deli menu is no-frills, and the calm blue and white makes it feel like a serene East coast deli... that happens to be blessed by a Rabbi. It is hard to imagine that everything in this corner of a North Austin HEB is "not not kosher." The pricing is a bit steep, but maybe I am safe to assume that much Jewish grub is pricey. Perhaps they are able to pay for the premiums for these offerings that sit in your stomach and are in religious regulations. Specifically, the $11 reuben was a bit off-putting. This is undoubtedly a New York price. I went with a half corned beef. The bread was stale and dry, in that crumbly stage, more or less. The rye flavor was not present. The corned beef was not the hot smoked corned beef that you get in many a NY deli, but rather this cold, deli meat sort of stuff. Yikes. As you can imagine, this was one of my least favorite $7 in Austin. Austin is a sandwich town; you can do better. In trying to sound cool, I will say the "prices are so not kosher, dude." Alas, why am I presenting KS with a 2? Well, at least they make an effort to provide quality grub to those who cannot eat un-Kosher fare. read more

I got the famous $12 reuben, hoping for an (almost) New York Jewish Deli experience -- not so much. The pastrami/corned beef? on the sandwich was cured, but not clearly identifiable. There was no swiss cheese (probably to keep it kosher). A nice thousand island/russian dressing and saurkraut grilled on the flat top. All on a very texas-style (not New York) rye bread. Guess I'll stick with BBQ on my next visit to Austin. read more

I ordered a hamburger from the deli counter and was sorely disappointed, perhaps not the best meal choice on my part. Forgiven on this count. The prices in this section of the store are significantly higher than the nice low Heb prices I've grown to love and expect. Also forgiven because of a more unique food selection The chocolate Babka was quite the tasty dense pastry/ bread mmm. However I must confess my only basis of comparison is the cinnamon Babka purchased at the same store. Despite having some flaws the existence of a Kosher section at all and the deliciousness are reason enough to leave four stars. I'd like a 3.5 start Good with room for improvement. The comment about "jewish grub" is an uneducated and slightly offhanded comment. People have the right to post an opinion, and we have the right to comment. I never heard of "jewish food", perhaps this uneducated person is referring to kosher food? Declaring food kosher is a process that must be paid for and this kosher section of H.E.B. recognises there is a segment of the local population who value staying kosher. Perhaps someone was trying to be 'funny' when he posted his review but it is not. My only suggestion for H.E.B. is to carry more kosher items and 'if' feasible, lower the prices a bit or offer sales from time to time. read more

The Kosher Store in the H-E-B in Austin is really terrific. While the counter was closed by the time we got there (they close at 6:30pm), we walked by to see what take out options they had. The mashgiach, who was still there, immediately came over to us and apologized that they didn't have any meat for a few days because of shipment issues. The guy didn't know us at all, but he recognized a Jewish family and immediately offered to help. He told us what they had that was kosher and available AND offered up the information that the H-E-B bakery is pretty much kosher except for 3 items, which he listed for us. What a mensch! The next evening, we got there with enough time to spare before leaving Austin and ate from the "restaurant". They still didn't have any ground beef, so no burgers, but we ordered deli sandwiches, which were VERY good. The bread is all baked on site, so was fresh and delicious. The pastrami was tasty, cole slaw sweet, and fries salty. All in all, a really terrific kosher experience. read more

I travel for business and also for fun. Keeping Kosher is a must and surprisingly The Kosher store had everything I needed. It is conveniently located in a HEB grocery store and has both fleshig and milchig items. There are Cholov yisroel products and they make pas yisrael bread that was delicious. Don't get turned off when they can't send you a menu via email just go and get everything you need for your stay. read more

I have been using this store for my kosher food for about 13 years now. The people have always been friendly with me and the selection is fantastic for Israeli or kosher foods. I think the prices are as reasonable as I can find for kosher food in Texas, a little higher than the non-kosher but IMO it is so much better tasting. read more

I had been hearing this buzz about this little counter in HEB having the best Reuben in town, so the other afternoon I decided to hit it up. Sure enough, right there, taped to the register, is an old, yellowed clip from the Statesman with the date cut out touting their Reuben as supreme. The cook who took my order seemed to be annoyed he had to cook anything at all, but I felt a little better when I saw him smear the bread with mayo before grilling it. The corned beef (which they brine there) and the sauerkraut all went onto the same griddle with the bread, and all came off at the same time. Quickest damn sandwich I've ever ordered. Now, I should have read the menu a little closer and not just walked up and ordered, so its partially my fault, but when he rang me up for just the Reuben, I was hit with $11.67! For a sandwich. It was already made and sitting in front of me, so I took it, albeit with a scowl. Here is the important part, though: The fucking thing was sublime. It was huge, over a half pound, and I ate the whole thing. It tasted like something you would order on the street in Chicago. It was charred and messy and absolutely perfect. If this sandwich had been anything less than what I am saying it was, then I would not be writing this review, because the staff and pricing is ridiculous. read more

This small kosher deli and grocery-within-a-grocery was a great find. Reuben sandwich was excellent--meat and sandwich was grilled and tasty. My son loved the corned beef on sourdough. The meat selection is very limited but we were able to stock up on fresh, frozen and packaged deli to bring home on the plane. Friendly staff and good eats. But objectively, they are out of product a lot of the time (usually hamburger meat). Ten years ago around 2005-2010, they had a much better menu. The HEB market where it's located is the best market chain in Texas. This location has declined over the years. I am from New York but I must admit that this Austin store has got the best food around! I ordered four platters - deli, sandwiches, fruit and veggi and each one was more gorgeous then the next! They were very generous with the food and the food was delicious! NOAH and LISA went out of their way to help me with ordering and delivering. It was a pleasure working with them. I read the reviews and my mouth was watering for a corned beef on rye with fries. I haven't had a good corned beef sandwich since Katz's closed. After that it was Mannie Hattan's - now they're gone - so I was expecting something close to that according to the reviews of the Kosher Store in The Village Center. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! 4 ounces of thin sliced cold corned beef for $9. RIP OFF!! And I drove from South Austin for that. For $1 more you got almost three times as much at Katz's. Forget Katz's, don't even think about Manny Hattan's. The Kosher Store inside of this H.E.B, I know it sounds weird, but they have got the BEST Reuben in town. Greasy corned beef with kraut and grilled rye (or in my case, I prefer sourdough), it is the best. It's not a hot spot, not a gimmick, but just a plain old good Kosher deli. Also try the New Yorker. This place really only exists for people who can only eat kosher, because if you don't eat kosher you can certainly find more reasonably priced food elsewhere. All kosher food is pretty expensive because it needs constant supervision. I give it four stars because it's decent food and good service, plus if you are kosher, it really is your only option. read more
