Came for dessert!I had my mind set on a cannoli and maybe another slice of something sweet. I ended up going for the key lime pie. The cannoli was very nice, creamy and flavorful filling. The only downside was that the shell wasn't as crisp as I would have liked. As for the key lime pie, it was decent too. The cream was a little too sweet on its own, but it balanced well with the citrus filling. Unfortunately, after I took the pie home and put it in the fridge, I noticed the next time I went to grab it that there was some liquid on the bottom. It made the crust wet, instead of having that nice dry, crumbly texture. I actually came by a couple of days ago, but after seeing the sign at the cashier, I returned with cash in hand. Made a quick stop in Austin to visit a cool bookstore and stopped next door at NeWorlDeli for a quick bite afterward. The entire experience was 5-star, mostly because of the service I received. The food was really good; I had a tuna sandwich and added sides of pickles and jalapeños. They also had packs of vegan twinkies so I had to get them to snack on later... Also delish!! Parking was pretty straightforward, as there are some spots available right in front (on Guadalupe), and also along W 41st St. In terms of setup, it's laidback - you order/pay at the counter and then seat yourself. Plenty of space inside, even as it started to fill up more over the evening. Curried Chicken Salad on a French Roll ($7.95 for a half, 4/5) - Great portion for the price! I ordered the "more than a half" option, and it lasted me two meals. - You can customize the type of bread you'd like, some with an added fee (sourdough +$0.25, gluten-free +$1.50). The other options of wheat, french roll, and jewish rye have no extra cost. I got the french roll and thought it paired nicely with the ingredients. - Light, refreshing mix of flavors. - Note: it's a cold sandwich, so if you're looking for something warm/hot, maybe try one of the grilled options. My friends ordered the Turkey Pastrami and the Turkey Sandwich with Apple, Brie, and Fig Jam + side of Sweet Potato Fries. Overall they weren't super impressed with the sandwiches (3.5/5). Both enjoyed the fries, but thought they were on the expensive side (total order with sandwich + fries came out to be $20-25 after taxes and tip). Ambiance wise, there was live music which in theory would've been a nice touch. However, they were performing so loudly that in order for my friends and I to hear each other, we basically had to shout at each other over the table lol. Not sure if it was just a one-off experience, but it definitely detracted from the dining experience and we ended up leaving earlier than we initially would have because of that. Excluding the loud live music, NeWorlDeli is still a solid spot - although the food didn't blow us away, the prices are affordable for the portions you get. I was going to eat here today, but a Reuben on rye bread was going to be $17 alone. The employee told me they stopped doing combos with soup or sides. I said I would get the half for $8, but corned beef was only available for the full price sandwich. I walked out. So ridiculous. Paid $18 for a hot turkey and Swiss, chips and drink. Everyone in my group got their orders within 10 minutes of being there, while I waited a full 20 minutes for mine and watched 3 other tables who sat after us get their orders before me. I wouldn't have cared that much because they were a little busy but I was told that my order "will be out in a few minutes" and when it finally did come 10 minutes later it was only kinda of warm and the bread was cold and wet in some places. I was surprised to see how they actually accommodated various food allergies including Celiac disease, which isn't easy for a deli, but is highly appreciated. What a lovely, hidden neighborhood gem!! The food is superb, generous portions, and definitely fresh. It's super laid back, order at the counter, and add on's are extra of course, with a little bar of hot sauce and extra condiment choices. The sandwiches are fully customizable, which is awesome! My Cuban was truly wonderful, and my husband went for the famous Reuban, which was enormous, and he absolutely loved it! Good sandwiches are hard to find, and for the price most places charge for a sandwich now, it really does need to be something truly special, which NeWorlDeli delivers on! As a New England transplant, it's often that I'm craving a good ol' Deli sandwich. NeWorlDeli is the spot. The Chicken Curry Salad (with the works) is a must. In fact, it's hard to order something different every time I go because this choice is just THAT good. Sandwich sizes are substantial and served with a pickle spear. Ambiance is welcoming, often with live music. Beer, wine, baked goodies, and soups are also found on the menu. I will say, though, the Clam Chowder had too much dill and, while I'm glad to have tried something new this visit, I will not get again. I stopped by for lunch on 3/20/24 after living in Dubai and Qatar 10 years, but I was born in Austin. It was just as I remembered it, only better. Greg said hi to two regulars and then stopped at my table. It's like chatting with the OG Austin star. My entire childhood flashed before my eyes and I'd be lying if I didn't admit I cried. My mother was a nurse across the street for 25 years and this was always my first stop after a surgery or doctor's appt on 34th. And for years on lunch work break. One of the most traumatic days of my entire life was made better in 2013 with a chicken cheesesteak. I've never forgotten how much it lifted my spirits that day. There was Tom Petty and Bob Dylan music, a soft harmonica playing, and our usual state worker regulars eating lunch. The OG Austin bliss like time captured in a bottle. This cute little retro cafe is far enough away from The University to attract a more diverse crowd than just students, and it's housed in a cool building that looks like it was originally early 1900s retail shops, with the recessed doorways surrounded by picture windows, raised ceilings with decorative tin squares, and transom windows situated over the porch overhang. They've partly knocked out the wall between two original spaces, so the food counter is on one side, and the tables and corner stage are on the other. There are a few tables out on the sidewalk as well. The back is open to a shared space with the other shops, and that's where you'll find the restrooms. Okay, so I love these old buildings, but the food and the live music are the main draw here. They offer a wide range of sandwiches made with fresh baked bread (gluten free available), salads, and some tasty soups and desserts. Drinks include Maine Root fountain sodas, a wine list, some cans and bottles of regional beers, and more cans and bottles of non alcoholic drinks. You order at the counter and they give you a number and bring it out to your table. We enjoyed the hummus sandwich on sourdough, and their classic Rueben. Friends ordered an array of dishes, including the chef's salad, paninis, and sweet potato fries. The key lime pie was delicious. We look forward to trying some of their other offerings too next time. It's hard for me to find a deli that has good gluten free bread and I'm happy to say, I've found the place I've been looking for all this time. The restaurant space is a good size with outdoor seating. I was very impressed by the menu and all of yummy options to choose from. I decided to go with a Turkey pastrami on gluten free bread with a tomato basil soup. My expectations were blown out of the water. This was one of the best sandwiches that I have had in a while. The staff is very friendly and happy to accommodate you in any way. The owner was there when I went and you can tell that he takes pride in his business.
