Their sashimi quality is pretty amazing for a little place in Amador county. Delicious fish without trying to be too gimmicky!

Wife and I wanted sushi on our way to Sacramento. Stopped by here, must say Iam not impressed. Service was crap, the server was talking to another employee the whole time. Brought out the rolls and did not bring plates. Had to go get that myself. Then check took forever to come, again they were talking. Lets talk about food quality. For 50$ we had 4 rolls and hot tea. The rolls sucked, they over used imitation crab in all 4 rolls to the max. Hardly any fish, you will get low quality food here. Never coming here again. read more

Wish there was a 0 star!!! I received my food and got so angry! I ordered the Sashimi lunch...4 pieces of sashimi, 3 pieces of cali roll, a mountain mound of rice, salad, soup for 11.95. In my opinion....4 pieces of sashimi and 3 pieces of cali roll are the only things that really count...and 11.95 for that???? I may just be a fat kid who wants more food, but common, you can't give a huge bento box without it being filled with food!!! There was like 3 spots of the box empty. I like Sushi and great to have a Japanese Resturant in Jackson and along Hwy 49. Service was slow, the staff made no eye contact and felt like I was a number vs a guest. I had one roll Special Number One $12.95. Modern, nice decor, windows were leaking and doorway was locked do to the storm. Spend some time with your customers, be friendly. Excellent dinner... Wife and I had the Wednesday evening sushi dinner tray special... For the sushi, two pieces each of Salmon, Maguro and Eel were sliced fresh at the time of the order... Simple green salad with lovely dressing, perfectly prepared pork pot-stickers and a bowl of steamed rice completed the meal... With the Wednesday evening OKO special, that worked out to $11.25 each... Service was prompt and friendly... It is a midweek evening in Amador County with modest traffic and staff to match... Absolutely not an issue... The owner pitched in so that all guests were seated on arrival; beverages and miso soup followed quickly... Orders were timely and accurate... Staff was attentive but not intrusive... Not at all sure I understand the low ratings on some of the other reviews... Oh, well... To each his or her own... I suspect the woman at a nearby table who complained vocally from the moment a waitress approached until the meal was over and she packed up her two challenging children and left may be one of those who will register one or two stars... Meh. This place was simply OK. The waitress was pleasant but she could use a little work. The sushi: Simply not fresh. It wasn't AWFUL. It was decent considering the area. The raw salmon that was on one of my rolls looked like a pâté type of salmon. It wasn't fresh sliced salmon. And the eel that was on my caterpillar roll tasted super fishy, I couldn't even eat it. I ended up picking the eel off the roll so I could eat it. I don't know that I would come back at all. read more

We've been to Oko Sushi many times since it opened. It has a clean, comfortable decor, with the choice of table service or the sushi bar. The miso soup is very good. Not too salty. It is probably one of the best I have had. I love the fresh edamame. They have some really good rolls here. My son and I love the Mt. Fuji. They have very good California rolls. The rice is just right. The Spicy Crispy Tuna is really good. A bit of heat and the crunch of the tempura make a nice combination. The Lemon Dream is also one of our favorites. It is filled with crab salad and avocado and cilantro, topped with scallop and paper thin lemon slices. UMMMM! Very addicting. The Chris roll is another stand out. The fish is very fresh here and I have never found it to have a fishy smell or taste. The tempura is decent but a bit bland and the batter could be a little lighter. My son thinks the tempura shrimp are the best! The teriyaki is just OK. The Katsudan is very good and we also find the Sesame Chicken to be an excellent version of this popular dish. The service is really friendly and accommodating even when we bring our children. Overall a really nice place to have in Jackson. read more

Sashimi was thawed frozen fish. It was not a good experience even after I doused it in wasabi. Once I caught my nostrils on fire with my attempt to over compensate. California rolls that came with my dinner were small and just o.k. and the salad consisted of one tomato on top of lettuce. The Tempura was rubbery. But, here's what topped off the experience... Two very loud women decided to practice for a medical exam while they sat at the sushi bar (apparently regulars because they were on a first-name basis with the staff). They used index cards and yelled the questions and answers back and forth. Absoultely no house-training, whatsoever! And, I thought people with cell phones in restaraunts were annoying! True Conversation: Woman 1: You know, like It means bodily excretion Woman 2: Defecation Woman 1: Yeah, yeah---now spell it Woman 2: D-I-F-E-C-A-T-I-O-N They continued to quiz each other on the intestinal tract. The waiter, sushi chef, and waitress---OMG, even the other customers who likely were regulars-were all oblivious. Maybe backwoods country folk (except for us) turn a deaf ear to terms such as flatulence, diarrea, and bile. Fortunately, we were only sipping miso by time they were wrapping it up. I literally wish I could eat here every day. You would think that it wouldn't be that good because it's in a small town but boy, it is divine! The staff is wonderful and they are very quick to serve you. We are actually on a first name basis with them. There miso soup is heavenly and all of their rolls are creative, fresh, and plated beautifully. My favorite is the Spicy Killer Roll with tuna, avocado cilantro, their special dressing and a thinly sliced jalapeno on top. The prices for the rolls are very reasonable and run from $9-15. And be sure to save room for the tempura banana with green tea icecream! YUMMMMM! You really can't go wrong with having lunch or dinner here. read more

Would never eat anything raw there for health reasons but the bento boxes we had this week were skimpy, overcooked meat, both the chicken and salmon, the teriyaki sauce was a gelatinous mess, the gyoza tiny and not fresh, none of the food was hot when we got it, and the service was the only good thing about it, but since we go out to eat for the food, will skip it from now on. read more

Last week I did not have time to cook, so I went to Oko TWICE! Wednesday I bought takeout, 2 rolls. And Thursday I returned for dine-in. My to go order was really good. Large rolls, fresh, delicious. My dine-in experience was good too, but the roll was kind of dry. The super nice waitress brought me a couple of extra sauces for my Rainbow Roll and it made all the difference. I love their soup and edamame. I forgot to use my 10% discount card, but their prices are fair, so no big deal. One suggestion, stay open all day. You're in the Safeway parking lot. Lots of moms hit Safeway before the kids get out of school and home by 3:30, but your lunch ends at 2:30. I think with some marketing you could push through this time period and make a profit. read more

This place still is hanging in there, although they have made some changes to their menu that I personally don't care for. They have stopped serving octopus and shrimps with their heads, so an order of amaebi is just fried shrimp now, bummer. I understand, they don't get enough orders to make it viable. What I don't care for is the trend of dousing everything in sauces, which makes me think they have something to hide and the that the fish is not at it's freshest...Well, we are 3 hours from the coast... They have improved upon their servers and we consistently get the little blonde/black haired lady and the Asian lady, both are exceptional and I apologize I do not know their names, but luch is always a good time to go. Overall it is decent. They do many things well, the free miso and endamame are a nice touch. This was recommended a dozen times when we were in Amador. We finally tried it on the last day. The bento lunch boxes are okay, they are generous with the ribeye and the rice in the teriyaki bento, but the California roll=3 pieces and they weren't much. I know California rolls aren't exciting, but that's what they offered with the bento. They were bad enough that I didn't need to sample anything else from the sushi bar. It was pollock sticks, not crab, and there was no wasabi or cuke on the roll. Very blah. The ribeye was thick and a really nice, generous cut, but the sauce was waaaaayyyy too sweet and thick. Yuck. If I ever go back, I'll say no sauce. We had been to I Heart Teriyaki next door 2 times this week, and were told it was a "Friendchise" by the server. They had their own recipe for the marinade that is different than the ones I've been to in Sacramento. Basically, they served a great bulgogi "teriyaki beef" that I recommend over the meal for the same price at Oko. I heart Teriyaki was much more flavorful, and still sweet from the marinade, without being sopping. I did enjoy the service at Oko, the food was just okay, and the bathroom was exceptionally clean. Overall, a 3. 9.00 for the bento meal lunch special. I gave my meat away at the end of the meal because it was a lot of food. Well, sadly this place was a let down. Sashimi (deluxe) quite good, although sliced mostly in chunks (strange--never ever seen!) Sauces on curry roll and on Chris roll bland and sweet, making us wonder if they've "dumbed down" the flavor to appeal to less sushi oriented crowd? Not sure; we'll possibly be back, but not eagerly. Gyoza and edamame tasty. Service ok, not poor, not caring, phoned in. Better overall than no sushi at all, if one doesn't want to drive 45 more minutes. Probably a better idea to do so, sadly. This is probably one of the best sushi restaurants in which I have eaten. And I have eaten in many around the Sacramento and San Francisco areas including some of the fancy, outrageously priced places. We always receive a friendly welcome at Oko Sushi. The miso is the best I have had. The fish is always very fresh and the portions are very generous. The sushi chefs are always nice and make great rolls and sashimi. We have been eating here since they opened and will continue to do so. Unlike other reviewers, we have never had a problem with service here, even when they are busy. Prices are very reasonable. My wife and I usually have two rolls, some cucumber rolls, and poke salad with a nice sake. The bill is usually around $30; not bad for good sushi dinner. This is a pleasant surprise for someone craving sushi here in Amador County. read more

Me and my daughter went in for dinner. The waitress brought my daughters food out and said mine would be a couple of minutes. 15 minutes later my daughters meal was gone and they gave me a 10% discount on her meal. NEVER got my meal. I was craving sushi SO bad! I was pretty disappointed with the quality of food here. Ordered the vegetable ramen, all of which was way over cooked to where it was mush. The vegetables consisted of broccoli and zucchini....that's it. Noodles and veggies just melted away it was so over done. California roll was OK but totally fell apart with the most gentle handling. Vegetable tempura was fairly good. Veggies could've been cooked a little longer. Not sure that I'd go back again which is too bad since they're the only sushi place in town. read more

Just left this place, started out good.we were welcomed and seated by a nice lady. We were asked if there was anything we would like to drink and we ordered soft drinks, and then we have our orders. I ordered the sashimi combo and the wife ordered the special salad noodles. The fish was not fresh, but I ate it anyway. The wife's was still waiting for her dish, When finally hers came I was almost done . I was shocked it looked like a baby size salad. I returned it ,we paid and left. UPDATE: 03-28-13: I stopped going here almost two years ago after I personally saw cockroaches IN THE SUSHI at the sushi bar on two occasions within a few weeks of each other. I know countless others who said they saw the same thing. I have been told by many locals that the county health department has received many complaints about the cockroaches. I have not been back since, so I can only assume since they're still open that they have cleaned up their game. The sad thing is the people who run Oko are very nice so I hate to stop going there, but my health is more important. Oko owners/staff, please clean up your restaurant. I hope you do and I hope you can reestablish your business. Original Review: When you live in Jackson, CA, you just assume you're going to eat like crap with all of the fast food joints pawing at your car as you lollygag down highway 88 or 49 behind the old ladies in their Pintos with freshly frosted hairdos. And be careful, those ladies don't stop for NOBODY! It's not really their fault, they just can't see anymore. When you realize your quality eating options in Amador county are limited to about 4 restaurants, you need not panic. Stop by Oko Sushi for relief!
