I visited Oko Sushi for lunch yesterday and ordered the Sushi Combo B. The fish was fresh, and the sushi chef visited our table twice to ask if the food was okay. He is a very kind and nice chef. The only flaw was that the older female waitress seemed unfamiliar with the menu and was very unfriendly and curt. After asking her about the food several times, it seems she has absolutely no common sense. Last time, the chef came over personally and kindly explained things to us. The older female waitress lacks the qualities of a waitress and needs more training. read more

We've been coming up here for a long time and rarely eat out, but we've been visiting oko for about a decade. The dining room recently (within the last few years) has gotten nicer. They have always had friendly servers and chefs- which we've always enjoyed. It's clean. Sometimes we sit at the bar and watch the chef and it's been nice over the years. However-- we've been keen on sitting by the fish tanks recently because they are soooo beautiful you can tell someone has put love into them. The food is pretty good, but can be mayo heavy with lack of creativity aka lemon slices in sushi(wt?) Negative part- the three times we'd been there in the last two months we have noticed a change for the worse. Recently- While sitting at the bar the old chef (maybe new owner?) slams things around angrily and cusses at staff, on one occasion almost two months ago we watched him raise his fist up as if he was wanting to strike a team member. As a customer I'm am in shock this is something that is normal(?) here now and I want everyone to know this before going in trying to enjoy a meal and all you get is an uncomfortable mediocre meal. Needless to say we just bring sushi in with us on our way into town instead of visiting this spot while at our vacation home. SHAME ON OKO for harboring such a toxic chef or whatever he is... if he's the owner he should just step back because working with other people or customers clearly ain't his thing. Our favorite sushi restaurant near Ione. Vegetarian bento box is great and they take care to keep it on uncontaminated surfaces. The chicken katsu is also really good, crispy exterior with juicy chicken. I'm giving three stars because it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. There were only two other tables with guest, but it took o er 10 minutes for the server to take our order. When our order arrived, some it was incorrect and while we were not upset, the server kept apologizing. The ambiance is ok. The nicest thing would have been e to be the fish tanks with beautiful fish swimming about. The televisions behind the sushi bar are ok, but distracting. The food is ok for the price, but sometimes what you get does not match what is stated in the menu. We'll go back and try again. read more

I was craving Japanese food last week and decided to finally try out Oko Sushi while waiting for my tires to get rotated next door at America's Tire. My husband came along as well. I had scoured the reviews of this place and it *seemed* like the reviews had gone up. I am generally distrusting of Japanese restaurants in small towns, but I figured Oko Sushi would be worth a try. Our first visit unfortunately looks like it will be our last. We were pretty hungry and both ordered the dinner bento boxes. I got the salmon teriyaki with veggie tempura, while my husband got the chicken katsu with gyoza. The first red flag was seeing the extremely limited selections of the bento boxes. At other (better) Japanese restaurants, there are far more options to choose your sides from, such as shrimp tempura or even sashimi. Oko only had a California roll, gyoza, and veggie tempura to choose from. Fine, just small-town things I guess, but not really an excuse when you're the only Japanese restaurant in a pretty wide radius. However, what honestly annoyed us both was that neither the lunch nor the dinner bentos boxes came with miso soup, which is a standard appetizer, and our meals were still $19 each. I have never been to a Japanese restaurant that doesn't provide miso soup with their bento boxes (or any set menu items, for that matter). Anyway, on to the next part of my review. Now it pains me to write this section as the entree portions of our bento boxes were actually pretty well-executed. My husband enjoyed the breading and flavor of his katsu, and I enjoyed the tenderness and the crispy skin of my salmon teriyaki. The gyoza were pretty good as well, and I had plenty of tempura, which were nicely breaded. The California roll was fine. Nothing to write home about. The ginger was fine as well. Now the rice that came with our entree on the other hand was absolutely not it. I'm not sure how an Asian restaurant can mess up rice, but Oko did. The juxtaposition of mushy yet undercooked rice was so unappealing. We finished our rice as we hate wasting food, but it's been a long time (I'm talking years) since I've had rice this bad. Tell me how the sushi rice was perfectly fine while the rice for the entree was undercooked?? This goes to show that the restaurant doesn't use the same kind of rice for their entrees as their sushi, which if you go to a good Japanese restaurant, it should be Japanese rice for both sushi and regular rice bowls. The salad was also mid, and seemed to cater to the country folk who frequent this establishment. Upon finishing our meal, we were also asked if we wanted dessert right away. Not a thing with other authentic Japanese restaurants we've been to. Service was fine, but nothing to write home about again. The presentation overall was also not exactly refined. Everything was packed into the bento boxes, and we actually had to take our rice bowls off the bento boxes themselves to have more space to eat. The best part of our meal was enjoying the beautiful fish in the multiple salt-water tanks they had. At other Japanese restaurants, the staff usually have beautiful cuts of their sashimi being shown off through glass counters. Here, the view was blocked by yet another fish tank. I do not see myself returning to Oko Sushi. Unfortunate, but I do not wish to spend my money on subpar food. Do yourself a favor and drive to Sacramento (or even north Stockton) for far better Japanese food. read more

Last night we "discovered" this place (that has been there for 19 years) and it's a favorite! Fabulous food, wonderful service, relaxing atmosphere and the aquarium is amazing! We don't have sushi often, but I had a hankering and everything was delicious. Our waitress was so personable and suggested substitutions since my husband is not crazy about a particular type of fish. It seems subtle, but I so appreciated the choice of music - background not blaring, and relaxing instead of the heavy rock/rap that you usually hear in restaurants. I love oko, for many years yet today I was so mad. I wanted to yell at the person on the phone. Short story short i called in door dash, two hours prior. I asked if nobody picks it up if my husband could grab it. I was told no. Ok for 30 bucks or so I get it but 11 rolls and almost 300 bucks there is no excuse for your only words being sorry call door dash and hang up on me. Luckily 3 hours later I got my food, after 40 bucks tip I tipped an extra 40. I'm a waitress and understand the struggle but as a waitress understand the lack in customer service. I hope you had an off night or pray you find a job that makes you happy. Know you did not ruin my night. I hope you treated your customers kindly. We just had lunch at this restaurant today, and it was wonderful. The food was super delicious, and the service was amazing! The menu is very extensive. My husband and I each had a lunch special; mine was with spicy Thai chicken, and my husband's was with teriyaki chicken, both with California rolls. Recently moved to PG from Sac area & was in search of a new sushi spot. My hubby found this & we saw the good reviews & decided to give it a shot. We were NOT disappointed! The restaurant is small, but you don't feel overly crowded. It was busy (Fri evening), but we got seated right away at the bar. It was such an experience eating sushi in front of the fish tank! The food was DELICIOUS & fresh! We got complimentary edamame to start, which was your average dish. We got miso soup, & it was very flavorful. The food is super good love the rolls and the sushi. My fiancé loved the combination box but the prices have raised... don't go by the ones you see on google or yelp because a roll is 20 each. I like to plan before I go and my whole mind changed at the restaurant but I still went for it because I hadn't had sushi in a while. It's was 75 for everything way over what I guessed my fault for guessing lol. The place is super super cute I love it. The vibe is quiet and the aquarium is cute. The service I hated it... the main waitress attitude towards us was way off- took smiling orders with everyone but us so it wasn't cause she was tired but something else... she didn't check on us the other girl did she was wonderful... don't think I'd go back.... I'm a little saddened that Oko Sushi has mid reviews. Not to say this in a derogatory way but it's a sushi restaurant in Jackson, CA guys... Jackson!! A city that's in the middle to nowhere and can considerably be a passerby city. You really can't expect much. My friend and I decided to get some quick lunch on our way to Travertine. The restaurant is located in a new-ish plaza with ample parking. It neighbors other fast food restaurants, so if you're looking for something better then Oko is your best bed. We came in to find the place somewhat filled. The lady out the counter was very friendly and led us to our table. Within a few minutes our order was taken. The interior is clean, spacious, and was filled with Japanese memorabilia all around. The rundown: Caterpillar Roll - Standard mid-quality sushi. Its basically crab salad, avocado, and unagi sauce. Portion was huge and one roll is good for one person. Bay Scallop Roll - Crab salad, salmon, and scallops all baked and topped with what seems to be garlic sauce and lots of onion. Loved the baked aspect of it. It basically is a Lion Roll. Don't expect the Wasabi and ginger to be fresh because it won't be. You can tell the wasabi was store brought but hey, it did the job. Friendly waitress took our order for two dinners, one teriyaki chicken, one teriyaki salmon, plus two orders of miso, and two large hot sakes. It was cold and nearly snowing outside - as it had been doing all week, so we were looking forward to this. Hot sake arrives at room temperature. Waitress claims she needed a napkin to handle the bottle. I was gracious in telling her that the sake itself was just lukewarm at best. She takes both bottles back, puts them in warm water, and then returns them to our table. No difference, still room temperature. She challenges us saying that the bottles were hot when she pulled them out of the water. I said, sorry, but maybe the stoneware bottles are absorbing the heat, but the sake is cold. She then returns after microwaving the sake to the point of boiling, and of course the sake doesnt taste like sake anymore! So then the meals arrive. The vegetable tempura as part of the meal is cold - and the miso is also cold. My wife's chicken is lukewarm, and my salmon is barely warm. Not only that but it appeared the salad was just thrown together without paying attention to small things, like pulling the stems off the tomatoes before they put dressing on it. Nothing like crunching into a salad and half the tomato vine is still attached to your cherry tomatoes. We're hungry so we just eat. The waitress seems to really be lacking in people skills, and after her pushback with the sake we decide not to complain. THEN - back at home, in the middle of the night - the unthinkable starts to happen. I wake up to bad diarrhea which is still going on as I write this review. Either they were short staffed last night, or they were overwhelmed with what looked like a normal amount of customers, or they just don't care, or all of the above. We've been to this restaurant several times in the past 6 years of living up here - but I'm afraid this one was our last visit to Oko Sushi. read more

At other times, especially the LAST time we will be there, BEFORE closing time, they came out and told us to leave, "closing time." We had a large group including children so it took a bit. I would not recommend this place at all. I placed an order over the phone to pick up I get there. My food is not ready half an hour later they called the person that just came in and picked up food back because they gave him my order, the owner of the company insisted that she pay for it the waitress that was there or call the person back to get it returned if I would've knownthat they were giving me that order that the gentleman before me returned. I would've gotten my money back and went someplace else. Not very good customer service. Just picked up our dinner. Disappointed. I think the restaurant is not using food-grade sanitizer. All our Sashimi tastes like Lysol. First taste - ugh Luckily we brought it back to our room and could rinse it under cold water. For the staff. I'm in hospitality - **Please contact your supplier for sanitizer specifically for restaurants and food handling. Our first time to dine at Oko Sushi. We came in at 8:45pm from high school graduation. They were very friendly & told us they close at 9pm. We ordered the Catalina roll and Teriyaki chicken plate (which is a large portion & shareable). All of the food was delicious. We were at the restaurant until 9:40pm. With our check they also gave us homemade chocolate chip cookies. Super yummy. Nice way to finish our meal. Highly recommend!! We don't leave in the area but we will come back someday!! read more

I am from the Bay Area amd I am used to having fresh delicious sushi. Never did I imagine I would have fantastic sushi in the mountains. My hubby even questioned my decision to hand mountain sushi.. The decision was the right one. Oh my word, this serving of sashimi maguro was pink and not at all old and fishy tasting. The serving of wasabi was enough to burn my nose hairs off (I love it that way) and the side salad was fresh and the perfect size. We got the Rocky III and the Ichiban rolls with calamari is the appetizer. They where very good rolls, just a little lite on the topping. On the way to Jackson, I decided to get something to eat.... and was surprised to see Sushi as an option. As I walked into the restaurant, you could immediately see it's a place where the servers know their customers by name and want you to have a good experience. I order the spicy garlic edamame..... and was not disappointed!! It was the perfect blend of spicy and sweet... it was so good... I forgot to take a picture..... I then ordered the Gyoza..... it was crispy and fresh and after eating all 6 I almost wished for more. I ordered 2 rolls.... the T&T and the Rocky III. The T&T was PERFECTION!!! The Rocky III Roll was good... it has lemon in it.... which was a surprise. While I liked the tartness and the clean after taste, if I were to order it again, I'd do with out the lemon. But it was a refreshing take on a roll that should be tried if you're looking for something different.
