The power of basic human kindness... Bottom line: I locked my keys in my car, with all my stuff except the few bills in my pocket and my phone. The Safeway gas station workers and Dot and the rest of the Crew at Oko Sushi & Teriyaki took me in when I was ready to cry and felt like I didn't have a friend in the world. I was already a solid fan of this Safeway crew and now Oko Sushi will have a customer for life. Great customer service, good solid food, and a hug when I needed it. Honestly, who could ask for more? Give these folks all of your money, they work hard and they deserve it. Here's the rest of the story if you want to know the details... It's Diablo wind eve and I just got off work. I stopped at my favorite gas station to load up before my hour drive back to Carmichael. Having completed my gas purchase, I exchanged my cc for my wallet and prepared to go inside for the rest. Unfortunately, old habits die hard and I continue to forget that I don't have keyless entry in this car. (First world problems, I know, but it's hard to break habits you have developed over years.) And of course I felt keys in my pocket, apparently my work keys, and I locked my car with the key in the ignition. Oh no!!! The good news is that I still had my phone in another pocket and I had "some money". I didn't realize I had locked my doors though until I had already paid for my purchases at the gas station. The amount of money I had left will be important later. After I called AAA member services and got my original 2 hour time estimate, I went inside to talk to the gas station employees and let them know what was happening. Luckily this gas station has 12 pumps and I was on the farthest one in, so they promised I wouldn't be towed and that they would call me if the tow truck guy showed up. The employees also clued me in that there was only one AAA towing agency out here, Rory's Towing, so I could try to call them directly if I wanted. AAA was having nationwide issues with their systems. Turns out the towing service couldn't help me at first, but that's ok, that's their rules. So, I waited in the area for AAA to call me. After 2 hours, I called back and got a new 4 hour time estimate. I was angry, but hey it gave me a chance to try some food in the area when I hardly have the chance to stop. So, I headed into Oko Sushi, ordered my food, talked with Dot, my waitress, about what was going on & prepared to wait some more. That's when it hit me: I didn't have my cc to pay and I went to sushi!! I'm felt so dumb I started to cry. I didn't know how I was going to fix this, when I think the restaurant was going to close before the tow truck came, but Dot and the girls helped me work it out. I was beside myself with gratitude. You just don't find folks like this anymore, but here they were, exactly when I needed them. And thank goodness because the rest of the story gets a little worse before it gets better. After dinner, I went back to check on my car & call AAA again because still no truck. How can this be when they only work with 1 guy in the area? When I call they tell me to go commercial because of their system errors: I was completely stunned. I had been sitting now for 4+ hours just to be told to go commercial & submit my receipts? Oh my goodness!!! I call Rory's Towing back, and now the towing agency is mad because AAA has kept me waiting so long, that they send a driver out stat. He was there in 15 minutes and I was in my car by 9:15pm, home by 10ish. Now, I have a card for Rory's and permission to call them as soon as I call AAA. I will also be asking AAA to assign them from now on, now that I know they are the only ones in the area near work. The power of human kindness was shown to me 3 times. About an average cheap sushi place. Came here on a Wednesday when they have buy one get one half off. I got the chicken teriyaki combo. It came with rice, salad & a choice of side. The chicken teriyaki portion was pretty big. The salad was really just some lettuce doused in salad dressing with a slice of tomato. There was really too much dressing, it was pooling at the bottom. For my side I got the California roll. It's basically 3 pieces which seems like a strange number. I feel like I always get my rolls in even numbers. For its price it's really not bad for the price especially on Wednesdays. The portion is pretty big and the food is average. The restaurant does seem to have a lot of seating although it was mostly empty when I went. read more

How have I never reviewed this restaurant because it's our favorite in Amador by far!! We've been coming here for about a year and half since we moved up here. Oko doesn't have the best or worst taking sushi. It's pretty neutral. Considering Oko is near the mountains I would say it's to be expected. It's the only sushi spot within approximately 30 miles so if your craving fish I'd give it a try. read more

So last night I ordered from this place instead of one of my usual 3 fav spots for sushi. About 30 minutes after I got extremely sick and let's just say wasted $40 Now I know why I shouldn't experiment because Door-dash reviews are so not accurate. The weird things was everything tasted okay but I noticed a lot of their rolls were fried. I decided to try the Himachi one which had friend hamachi in the middle then fresh on top. Nothing really tasted fresh it was very heavy like fried food and I had also gotten an avocado salad thinking to keep part of my meal healthy. That also was super heavy. I felt like I ate at a BBQ joint type of heaviness not that fresh light feeling when you eat sushi. Never eating here again and tossing my leftovers, can't say I've ever eaten food to have it come up so fast. read more

I feel like this place has gone down hill from a few years ago. Went back and sushi was good, but we also got two bowls of ramen and one udon and we didn't even really touch it. We asked for something off since none of us touched our soups and they gave us 10% off which basically just took care of tax, nice of them to do but kind of wanted more than that for a $75 bill which 3 things we didn't eat at all. Then all three of us felt sick the rest of the day. Service was bad. We had to speak up very loudly across the restaurant so that we could get any help at all. Not a good experience at all. Fantastic sushi. I ordered a salmon wrap, it's like a sushi burrito. It was so good, I am pretty picky about my sushi and this was about as good as I've ever had. Paula and Dot are wonderful at floor service and Jason and Jerry are amazing at cranking out the sushi. Must tries are the Poki Salad, the Calamari and the Crispy Spicy Tuna. Cute little place with nice service. The four of us went for dinner last night and overall had a good experience. Once we were seated, they served us miso soup before taking our orders. The sushi was eh, not very fresh or liked by my uncle. I ordered the vegetarian oko tofu bento box and enjoyed it. The tofu was deep fried perfectly, but bland without any seasoning. The dipping sauce was good and had a spicy kick. I enjoyed the veggie California roll, the cucumber and avocado had good flavor and texture. The rice, however, tasted like it was made way earlier in the day. It also came with a small salad with creamy mustard dressing. My bf and aunt ordered the sesame and orange chicken dishes. Hers came with rice, tempura vegetables and a little salad. His just came with rice and salad. They both enjoyed their meals and their chicken looked good and well prepared. Heavy sigh. Well to start off there was no tofu in the miso which I thought a little odd but didn't complain because the soup was complimentary and pretty good. I ordered the "T and T" roll because I lika the spice. It was okay. I also got an order of tempura shrimp that was really damn gross. Wasn't de veined and idk what kind of batter they used it was just soggy & flat, not fluffy crispy tempura like I'm used to with nice prawns. They also tasted "off" so after that first couple bites I gave them back for those 2 reasons. Icky. They made me feel a little queasy after I ate them so that rang alarm bells. The roll was average but very bland which is just weird I don't think I've ever experienced bland sushi rolls until today. I also ordered their "zig zag" hand roll that is supposedly very popular which had fried dungeonous crab & crab salad (?) & a little avocado? I think that was it, oh and A LOT of rice in it. Wrapped up not in seaweed, which is usually what you see with hand rolls but this weird, plasticky edible lime green wrap stuff? Oh no. Absolutely BLAND even with accoutrements galore I couldn't do more than a few bites. Rice and crab salad? What in the world. So my friend feels bad and offers her salad to me because she doesn't want it. THERES A HAIR IN IT!!!! Oh the dreaded hair. The waitress (who was switched in the middle of our dining) immediately defended saying her hair is brown not black. Oooooookeee doke...that makes me feel... better? Must be from the bedraggled looking "chef" manning the sushi bar that literally, looks like he just rolled outta bed. Jayzus!!! Other places I've been, even in my dinky little town of Galt, our sushi chefs wear hats (they look like surgeon hats) to keep the hair back. The waitress also got the min amount for tip because she just wasn't on it. Folks it's been a long time since I've had such a crap experience. Maybe others do netter & it just wasn't our day. I was just really looking forward to a nice lunch. I understand it's up country so I'm realistic on what's available, etc but really, if you can't come proper just don't come at all please.
