We played a variety of the machines, but the most luck we had was with the Top Dollar Machines, the others weren't lucky this time around. While we only left up $30, we spent 3 hours of fun just playing away. Something I haven't seen at any other casino was a free soda and non-alcoholic drink areas! It's Pepsi products though, so not the best, but at least it's free. I saw people ordering smoothies, which looked really good but we never stayed at a slot machine long enough to get one. We came on a Thursday, and it was bummer that there was only (1) blackjack table going with a $5 minimum. I walked by multiple times and there was never an open seat. Plenty of seats of pai gow or poker though. Maybe it was just the time of day, but definitely would love to try my hand at blackjack next time around.

Now, onto the food! The appetizers alone could have been a meal. The Caesar salad was one of the best I've ever had, and as a girlie who doesn't usually love soup, I have to say the corn soup my husband ordered was delicious bursting with flavor and perfectly creamy. My husband chose the burger with truffle fries, and they absolutely nailed it. The bacon jam, arugula, goat cheese aioli... every bite was incredible, and the fries were amazing. I had the steak with scalloped potatoes and carrots, and as someone who typically likes her meat well done, I can honestly say this steak was excellent. Dessert was mouthwatering and packed with flavor. The pricing was also very reasonable for the quality of food and exceptional service we received. We visited on Saturday, the day before Father's Day and two days before my birthday. Not only did they personalize my dessert with a birthday message, but they also surprised me with a birthday card signed by the team. Then, just five days later, a handwritten thank-you card and birthday wishes arrived at my home. That is the kind of service that leaves a lasting impression. This is a lovely property in located on the Shenandoah School Road east of Plymouth, California. Owner/Winemaker Chaim Gur-Arieh started his career as a food technologist, creating some of my childhood favorites- Captain Crunch, Hidden Valley Dressing, and pudding cups. That has to explain why he creates some very delicious wines now. Elisheva, his wife and business partner hosts the tasting room, or should I say tasting garden. On gorgeous days enjoy the beautiful large patio and garden space she has created on the property. Complete with chandeliers. Be part of their mailing list and make reservations to attend one of her concerts in the garden during the summer. After checking in at the actual tasting room, I walked the path to the garden and could pick any seat. I was brought a nice charcuterie / cheese plate to enjoy with the wines and the sunny morning. The barbera and tawny port are two of my favorites. The sparkling rose was nice and light, perfect as we now enter 100 degree days for the summer. It's going to take several trips to discover all their wine. Chaim has even made wine that pairs with sushi. Wild. Don't be disappointed by showing up, they may be full. Make a reservation. They are a very popular and great vineyard.

I had to show them the email confirmation. It was fine and we were still able to sit down right away. The inside wine tasting room is kind of small but the outdoor patio and area makes up for it. It is quite big and open. I think someone can host an outdoor concert or a wedding. We got to taste about five type of wines (Sauvignon Blanc and few blended red wine). They were all good. I particularly like the 2020 Interlude and purchased a bottle for my sister. We also got to sample from their gallery collection library club that's like 20+ years old ( I forgot the exact year) and that was special. They also have dumplings and spring rolls for purchase. I skip that because I wasn't sure if that would go with the wine. We bought some cheese with us and we had that with our wine. Of course, we asked for permission before bringing in our own cheese and crackers. The gentleman that served us was really nice and friendly. We didn't feel rushed and wine was poured at a good pace. I do want to mention that most winery at Amador will comp at least one tasting with purchase, but not at Di Arie. If you're not a member, be prepared to pay the full wine tasting fee per person.

We bought the tri-tip family meal, which came with tri-tip that we picked up outside, then had it sliced inside at the deli counter, 2 lbs of baked beans with bits of unexpected pineapple, potato and macaroni salad, and rolls, all for only $36.99 + tax. The tri-tip was still juicy and delicious after microwaving it at home, and the cold salads made it back safely since we had a cooler. The beans were exceptionally delicious. I've never had them with pineapple before, only in macaroni salad. We need to boycott fast food with their outrageous prices these days. This was obviously better and fairly priced.

I don't know how many times over the years we've driven past Good Friend Chinese Restaurant while…read moreen route to the foothills and high country, and nearly every time we'll make a comment. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's pithy, sometimes it's out of curiosity, but usually it's in the context of "who would come to Valley Springs to find good Chinese food?" Well, recently we were returning from yet another trip in the Sierras and were kind of hangry, so we decided to settle it once and for all, and give Good Friend a try. We arrived relatively late - it was only 7:30pm, but they close at 8:30pm, so their dinner rush was well past and they were winding down. This is important. Throughout our meal, the staff could not have been friendlier or more efficient. They were not annoyingly so, but they didn't miss a beat. The food in the buffet stations was starting to run out. The sushi selection had dwindled down from what was probably a much larger offering, although what remained still looked pretty fresh, not old and tired, and in fact, the few pieces we had were much better than typical Chinese buffet sushi. (I know that sounds like faint praise, but the sushi was actually decent.) The green mussels that were next to the sushi did look a little dry around the edges so we gave those a pass, but in fairness, mussels start to look that way pretty quickly, so they may not have been out very long. The hot and sour soup was much better than expected. If I hadn't crammed so much food into my pie hole already, I would have had another bowl of it. It does seem kind of weird to eat a Chinese soup with a Western soup spoon, but when in Rome, I guess. Also surprisingly good was the beef & broccoli, jalapeno pork, and the ribs, keeping in mind again that it was close to closing time and most of the ribs in the tray didn't look that great, but I managed to find enough that were meaty and moist to satisfy my jones for them. Next time - and there will probably be a next time - I'll pass on the stuff that is battered and fried: chicken, frog legs, tempura-style veggies. The battering was soft, not crisp. I don't know if that's because they'd been sitting and cooling in the steam table or if it's the batter mix. They weren't bad, just not how I like my fried stuff. The fried chicken actually tasted pretty good other than the soft coating, but I was reminded after eating the frog leg that frog's legs don't excite me to eat as much as the idea of eating frog's legs. Too much work for too little payback, and frog's legs can sometimes taste a little fishy. That's ok if you're eating fish, but when the meat is more like chicken, fishy taste is just odd. There were a few items that, earlier in dinner service, were probably much better. The dry fried string beans (labelled as "sauteed string beans") were really in need of replacing although we managed to pluck half a dozen of them out that looked ok, and there were a couple of other mixed veg trays that were past their prime as well. We also gave a pass to the crab legs, but not on account of their appearance. We just didn't feel like working that hard to get at the meat. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised. It was not the best Chinese food we've ever had. OTOH, it was FAR from the worst. Even more important, we agreed that we would have no problem going back. Is it a destination place? Absolutely not. But we definitely added it to our list of places to eat while we're on the road and want something we know will be good enough. Again, that sounds like it could be faint praise, but there's a ton of places out there for which we would not say the same. I'll add for context that the 4-star rating is relative to what I'd expect in Valley Springs. If Good Friend Chinese Restaurant were in, say, Richmond or San Francisco or San Gabriel, for instance, there's no way I'd rate them at 4 stars. More likely it'd be in the 2-3 star range in those areas. But considering the location and expectation, Good Friend is not a bad option. All the cars lined up in the Taco Bell drive-through should have gone across the highway to Good Friend! It also gave the "divorced dads with kids for the weekend" vibe.

Coming from the Bay, it's always refreshing to sandwiches that don't cost an arm and leg. A lot of their sandwiches and wraps start at $9.99 and although the sandwich looked small, it was pretty filling. I went with the 'Cattlemen' which was roast beef, horseradish cheddar, plus all the fixing. It's panini pressed, so the the bread is nice and toasted, crunchy. If you are really hungry though, I'd pay extra to get double meat for a little extra protein. My partner got the chicken cesar wrap, and that was pretty tasty. We finished half and ate the rest later and it was pretty good. I had go to the big box store for alcohol, and was surprised to see the prices here being super competitive and even cheaper for a bottle of espelon tequlia. Definitely will be back here to do shopping and grabbing sandwiches for the golf course.

Employees were friendly for the most part, but I can't get past the pricing - the Angels Food Market is in the middle of nowhere - who is paying these prices?!
