My favorite cafe in NYC is OK Cafe in Astoria. The coffee, tea and pastries are excellent and the atmosphere is warm and cosy. When I'm in Astoria I visit at least two times a day for my morning cappuccino (which is authentic like the ones in Italy) and then a late afternoon espresso. It's fun to go there for wine and cheese in the evening, too. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and fun to be around. I really miss OK when I'm out of town. read more

My favorite weekend coffee spot, only b/c I don't live closer to show up every day. The staff are friendly, and the lattes are delicious. They use naturally-derived flavorings that are rich and satisfying. I go out of my way to come here on the weekends for lattes or iced tea. The staff are very friendly. The only drawback is that it's really a grab-and-go place with just a few seats available. Still, I'd rather go there and get a delicious latte that's reasonably sized than grab a seat across the street, where the competing coffee shop provides very small portions. read more

I'm not a huge yelp reviewer, but I rely heavily on other people's reviews, so I have to jump in and give a 5 star review to this local gem! Stopped in on Saturday afternoon for a pre-studying jolt. Music was awesome (80s when I came in!), staff couldn't have been more friendly. For $3.50 I got a perfect little cortado. I am so excited to come back and try the new turmeric latte...I live up the block, so it's going to be hard not to stop in all the time! (Prices comparable to other coffee shops, and I would much rather my money goes to a local spot than the big coffee cooperation up the block.) OK Cafe is like a family member at this point. Sure, it's a small place that lacks the raw speed at which Starbucks churns out their corporate butt-lattes, but that's exactly what makes OK so special. The interior looks like the quirky kind of coffee shop that my hippie aunt never got around to opening. Charmingly tacky wall paper, giant glass drip coffee makers straight out of "the great mouse detective," and a really charming nice staff. The have a house blend and a New Orleans French press (I believe they use counter culture beans) which are both fantastic choices for black coffee. I usually get a latte, and they somehow always manage to get the milk to that perfect temperature of drinkable-but not burning hot. Also, I need to mention that I have never once had a bad experience with the staff (and I've come here every morning). They seem like they really love coffee and are all great people-persons, so that should count for something. read more

I recently had an uncharacteristically negative experience at OK and haven't been back since. They have a 45-minute seating limit that I totally understand and respect. However, I thought that it might be "OK" to extend this time frame if the place was empty, or half empty. If it's actually not, I would respect that, too. What I don't understand is that when (whom I infer to be) the owner approached me and pointed out the limit, the place was half empty. I started to explain that I am aware of the limit and would gladly leave if the place looked even close to being full. In my ideal world, the owner would have let me finish my sentence and said something like, "Ok, but please leave when it starts to get full". Then I wouldn't have had to go to 60 Beans or NYCBCH, or Café 23. In a marginally less ideal world, he would have said something like, "I understand, but we have to stick to this policy because 'FILL IN WITH ANY PLAUSIBLE-SOUNDING REASON'", which I also would have respected. Unfortunately, neither one of these scenarios occurred. When I started to politely and briefly explain that I was aware of and respected the policy, he cut me off saying, "Please, you've been here for 2 hours". His time estimate was pretty accurate (admirable surveillance!). At this point I calmly said, "Well then I'll leave immediately" and started to pack up. He was not off-the-charts rude as he was also calm, yet I did find his behavior uncivil. Constructively, I will point out that even though he interrupted me, at this point he could have redeemed himself saying something like, "I'm sorry, but I hope you understand". He had one more redemption opportunity to say something like this as I left, but he didn't. He lost an opportunity to help me understand his rationale (which other reviewers also don't understand-although I quite disagree with a harsh indictment of the "older lady's" skills), and he lost profit that would end up being made elsewhere (I would have rather stayed and bought one of their delicious-sounding, new empanadas-space permitting of course). The moral of this story is ALWAYS treat customers with respect, (as the rest of the OK staff have done). From a heartless, capitalist perspective, this respect might be considered more important with loyal customers. read more

I wish I could give this a rating of 0. The coffee was good, but the male barista was the rudest person I have encountered for a while- and I work in an ED where everyone is mad and flustered. I will spare the details and get to the point that in the end he gave me the wrong order (I asked for a large latte with two shots, and he made me a quad), and I politely was inquiring and asked if I could have a large latte with only two shots as I am sensitive to caffeine and didn't want 4 shots! Meanwhile he is telling me I am wrong, didn't order the correct thing, and refused to make another one, and said to me with the nastiest attitude "well THATS what YOU ordered." I was honestly shocked, confused, and embarrassed. It ruined my day, and even now ( 1 week later) as I write this review I am so mad and upset yet again! He should not be in that industry. read more

This literally just happened. Went in for a hot chocolate made with almond milk. A $4.90 hot chocolate. It was served to me lukewarm and tasting like plastic. I went back to the counter and asked the barista if the milk was old. She looked at me funny. I told her it tasted off, a little plastic. So she takes the carton out of the fridge and pours into a little glass...so what, I can taste plastic again? She says, "oh yeah, this brand isn't good, but it's what we have." I tell her I'd like a new drink please. She looks at me funny again and says, "Fine, but you'll have to pay again. We don't do refunds." No apology. No offer to remake the drink on the house. I said thanks, dumped the nasty overpriced drink in the garbage and walked out. So sad that a sweet little independent shop like this makes me want to go to Starbucks. read more

Ok Coffee was less than OK! I walked in with 4 other people and 3 of us ordered something, the others were just there for the company. Our intentions were to sit for 10-20 min and keep it moving, but before we could do that we got kicked out because apparently you're only allowed to sit down if EVERYONE orders coffee. I understand that this is a small establishment but like i said it was empty and quite frankly WHO DOES THAT? The coffee was mediocre at its best and the service as you already know was down right disrespectful. You're better off going to Dunkin Donuts and thats not saying much. read more

They had a sign outside stating how good their ice cream sandwiches were so I just had to try it. I had an ice cream sandwich with vanilla ice cream and the cookie appeared to be chocolate chip with some nuts. It tasted like the refrigerator to be honest. Know what I mean? When you leave something in the freezer too long and it develops a "taste". That's how it was. So disappointed. Even if fresh, it wasn't exceptional. I would prefer the flying saucers from Carvel more. The people were super friendly though so I wouldn't completely rule out this place. Just no ice cream sandwich is all. read more

Stopped in for the first time yesterday. I wanted a cold brew and requested the New Orleans variety. I had never tried it before and the barista suggested I taste it first since it had chicory in it. I ended up not loving the root taste and ordered the Kyoto cold brew instead. It was amazing!! So strong but smooth and mellow. I drank it slowly and had energy for hours.
