I opened up a conversation with the barista about the matcha latte I ordered... oh boy! I was curious about how they stored it, which is in a glass jar. I hate to sound pretentious but if you're charging $10 then put your matcha in a container where it's not exposed to light. The barista put 1g of matcha powder in my drink and I was curious about it so I inquired. It was a back and forth conversation where I mentioned to them that places like Kettl (who import their own matcha) charge less than they do and use way more matcha per serving. Second barista came from the back and in front of all the customers asked me "do you make matcha at home"? I replied and said "yes" Her response was classic, she then asks me: "then why are you here"? Seriously, that's how you talk to customers? I responded: "why not"?!?! I can't question what I'm buying because you guys are actually doing it wrong? I guess not. It's shut up and put up at OK Cafe now. I've been a customer here for years but I definitely won't be going back for now. And to the owners, who are a lovely couple... please go do a matcha tasting somewhere in the city and come back refine your matcha recipe and what you're charging the customer. read more

While I've been a long-time fan, I think this place is in need of a refresh...a new kick-start... A number of times, now, hot coffee has tasted burnt. Mini fritatta on 'toasted' English muffins aren't actually toasted...just warm. Another time I ordered a (warmed up) ham & cheese croissant and a hot coffee. Normally, they'd put the croissant in the toaster oven, then pour me my coffee to enjoy, as I wait for my food to be heated. I'm a sucker for rose, but I didn't get any essence of it in any sip. The Latte was warm, soothing, and sweet but it just didn't have the flavors I was expecting. TLDR: Blond, short-haired barista with black rimmed glasses has been very rude on multiple occasions. I wouldn't come here again. I live in the area and would come in a few times a week. Came in a few days ago to show my partner my favorite local cafe. Unfortunately, my iced chai was extremely watered down and my partner's iced coffee had a ton of ice in it and was extremely bitter. This was odd because I'd been here a bunch of times and had always enjoyed it. Not sure if this barista was just having a bad day or something but they were quite rude and unwelcoming (more so than usual). This particular barista has never been very nice or friendly but today was particularly harsh. First, my partner ordered a cold brew and was met with a lot of attitude for not specifying which flavor he wanted, then more attitude when he took a few moments to decide. Before we were even out the door the barista (along with another woman behind the counter) were audibly speaking badly about both of us, saying that they intentionally made our drinks badly and laughing about it. Tiny....but powerful. Being that we had just finished with lunch on Ditmars Blvd and had enough time before my daughter could catch her plane, my non-Yelp husband decided to come to this cafe on 33rd St in Astoria for some hot beverages. Damn right he was spot on. No indoor eating due to everything that's going on these days- but there's great coffee and other beverages from this space barely big enough to contain at least three baristas. My kid went for an Almond milk Latte and hubs decided on an Espresso. Both liked theirs. I put a Lavender London Fog order in- then noticed a Mexican Hot Chocolate on the menu. I intentionally bypassed it and thought it was done with that brown Hershey's syrup people all seem to love. Sure enough, when I asked if their Hot Chocolate has Hershey's (her look said it all), she turned around, cocked her neck and said, "no". My Lavender London Fog was just right without giving my drink that overkill "flowery" taste lavender usually gives when it isn't proportioned correctly. Dare I say, I regretted not going for their Mexican Hot Chocolate- on top of the Lavender London Fog I'd already ordered. To eat, there are cookies, savory items, at least 3 types of Empanadas and other Vegan bites on the menu. Service was awesome. And can I mention what my favorite thing (I have a few) about this place was? Small businesses like this cafe have quickly become my favorite. They have a unique menu of drinks, and every time I come in I try something new. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable enough to make the drink choosing pleasant. The atmosphere is cozy, intimate, and friendly. I don't know how long it has been in Astoria, but it should be here to stay given all the gentrification that has happened over the years. They do have a screen limit. I understand why they do which is too bad. I have yet to find a place in Astoria that isn't a Starbucks or Paris Baguette to do my work. All in all, It fits right in Astoria. read more

They also weigh everything out so that every drink is consistent, which I love. The maple almond latte could have more maple flavor but the espresso is from counter culture, which I love. Coffee is great, the ambiance is adorable, and the staff are friendly. I came in to pass some time while waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant. It was a rainy afternoon and I was so happy to spend some Time here. I sat in the window with my delicious coffee and enjoyed the community passing through. There are a whole bunch of great snacks and food items here. There is a hot chocolate that I am dying to try. There is also a cookie shop next door that would be great to dunk in the coffee here. I know a lot of people like this place but I'm sad to say I was disappointed. The service was non-existent. It's a small hole in the wall and I stopped in to get a coffee. There were two other customers there, and two baristas. Not a hello, nothing. They took forever to take my order, didn't bother apologizing for how long they were taking, nor did they say they'd be with me in a minute, nothing like that. Delicious cappuccino and iced Kyoto cold brewed coffee. They advertised that the Kyoto coffee was "complex" It was simple enough for me, delicious and refreshing! The cappuccino was strong and nutty and I ordered an almond croissant which they warmed up for me, nothing quite pairs as well as coffee and a sweet warm almond croissant, yum factor of 10+ Seating is limited with about 10 seats inside and located outside 2 small type park benches. The baristas were friendly and prices as expected for a small local café in Astoria. The only downsides were the limited baked goods they had to offer and the poor performance of the air conditioner to cool the café. Overall, OK Café is "A-OK" in my book! read more

I just witnessed an inappropriate interaction with a customer who was having a very hard Friday morning. The customer mistook the staff's intention and assumed the staff was being condescending. I think the staff was short-handed trying to manage a morning rush of 8+ customers and spoke a little quickly but had kind intention in trying to explain the different beverage options. To be honest, I had just ordered and I was a little confused with so many options so I understand why the staff may over-explain things to help customers better choose what they need. Additionally, the menu shifts and something what I want to order isn't available so more talking is required at times. The regulars were shocked at the interaction and how quickly the customer unraveled. I think this is a great neighborhood cafe and have greatly enjoyed my food and drinks. The staff did well handling a difficult morning interaction with a store filled with waiting customers. 5 stars for professionalism and class.
