Visited ochos for the first time because they were having a live mariachi. We tried the steak and noodles, one of the ceviches and carnitas tacos and all the foods were absolutely amazing! Service was very slow and they were definitely understaffed, but everyone as super friendly and nice that it was hard to be upset that we had been waiting over 30 minutes for drinks on multiple occasions. The place is really small and this was their first event like this i believe, so the placement of the tables was not ideal as we had to move a lot of the mariachi to fit or walk behind us. This gem of a restaurant sits on the corner of Kapahulu and Kapiolani. It's an area full of interesting dining options, and Ochos 888 stands out as one of the best. The one-page menu is restrained but with enough choices to make it hard to choose. We first ordered takeout last week and liked it so much that we came back to dine in. The owner/host, Sam, is justifiably proud of what he's built. He shared the restaurant's history with us, which made the experience feel even more special. The stars of the show are the seven varieties of Peruvian ceviche and tiradito. When Sam overheard me mention a salt sensitivity, he kindly sent out a sample of the Nikkei tiradito. The mahi-mahi marinade--a fusion of Asian and Latin flavors--was outstanding. My husband ordered the Acevichado, Sam's favorite, a deliciously tart and creamy dish. Don't miss the saltado, offered with chicken or steak. There are three versions, and we tried the steak tallarín--a dish as beautiful as it was delicious. The beef was tender and perfectly seasoned, the vegetables bright and fresh, and the linguine al dente, providing t perfect base. My steak tacos came on double white corn tortillas with onion, cilantro, and salsa. For just $1 extra, we added avocado--what looked like an entire fruit, beautifully sliced, fanned, and sauced. For fun, we also ordered the salchipapas, which turned out to be an unexpected flavor explosion. It's a simple but perfectly executed dish of sliced hot dog and fries--crispy on the outside, creamy inside--drizzled with ketchup, mustard, and mayo. Sam encouraged us to dip the fries in the accompanying ají amarillo, a creamy, tangy cilantro-based sauce, which really elevated the dish. My husband also had the classic margarita, served in a mason jar--fresh, bright, and very enjoyable. The space is anchored by a large bar as you walk in, with wooden tables and chairs of varying sizes arranged throughout. You can sit by the front windows or along the cozy back wall. The atmosphere is lively but comfortable, with everyone happily eating and talking at an easy volume. There's even parking behind the restaurant--a rarity in town. Ochos 888 is exactly the kind of neighborhood spot we'll return to again and again, and we're already looking forward to trying more of the menu. I'm Peruvian and have tried tons of Peruvian restaurants around the U.S. but Ochos in Honolulu is honestly the best one I've tried! The chef working was Peruvian too, and you can really tell from how authentic the food tastes. I got the ceviche de ají amarillo, tallarín saltado, and a pisco sour, and all of it was amazing. The flavors were super fresh and spot on. I can tell they took pride in perfecting these dishes. The pisco sour was made very well, I haven't had one this good since I was in Peru! If you're looking for real Peruvian food in Hawaii, this place is a total hidden gem. Highly recommend! read more

Tried this place based on 5 star rating hopes for new local latin food. All 3 food items we had we're a total strikeout. The parm scallop app were 80% parm and 20% scallops. Had a fancy salt volcano that was burning on fire because they used a toxic alcohol that seeped into the food...how is this legal? The next dish we had was the Lomo Saltado which was completely over salted, the steak was overcooked and the onions were raw....barely edible. The final dish was the burrito which was essential flavorless and overpriced. The staff was super friendly felt so bad complaining about the food but reality we left with a hefty bill for one of the worst dining experiences I've had in the 8 years living on this beautiful island. Honestly must have done something to generate 5 star reviews because this place is far from it unfortunately...we really wanted to like this place since it is in our neighborhood. read more

Came here tonight with a group of friends for an early birthday dinner. It was my first time here. I had found it on Yelp because I was searching for some good Mexican food. This place is great! I had a burrito with carnitas and a side of chips and salsa. The burrito was delicious and very filling! The chips and salsa were great as well! The service was wonderful! Very friendly staff! The restaurant is very nice and spacious, not crowded and not noisy, so, it made it very easy to talk with the group I was with. The only downfall was that their dessert menu didn't have a lot of choices. I had expressed to the owner that I love cheesecake and towards the end of our meal, he walks over to our table with a variety pack of assorted mini cheesecakes from Safeway! Noticed this place as I was heading to my friends house. I liked the open windows and seemed to have a cool vibe so we stopped in for lunch today. We were greeted immediately by the two men behind the bar. We ordered the Acevichado as an appetizer and both of us ordered Lomo Saltado as our entree. The first guy that came to our table offered to show us some pictures of the food, which is how we chose the Acevichado. However, the dish we got looked nothing like the photo. It was delicious, don't get me wrong, but it didn't look the same and was a little hard to eat as it was served to us. The picture showed THINLY sliced raw fish arranged neatly in a row in their creamy citrus marinade. We got thick slices of raw fish scattered on a plate in a creamy citrus marinade. I had to ask for a knife to cut the fish into smaller pieces so we could enjoy it. The flavor was great tho. The fish was fresh and delicious. Our Lomo Saltado was on point. Seasoned well. A tad bit on the sweeter side than I'm used to, but I would definitely come back and have it again. I ate the entire dish. My only suggestion would've been the presentation, the edges of the plate were not wiped clean as you can see in the photo. The most delicious meal with the best host and hostess! We happened upon this restaurant almost by accident. At first, we thought it was a Mexican place, but the owner came and sat at our table to explain that it was Peruvian food. We were pleasantly surprised and decided to go for it, always down for a food adventure. We tried the beef and noodles, the parmesan scallops, and the loaded fries. Absolutely delicious! I don't even like scallops, but these I were amazing. The steak and noodles had so much flavor. And the loaded fries my daughter ordered were a total winner. The Peruvian chef clearly knows his way around the kitchen, every dish was cooked to perfection. Everything was super fresh, and the warm hospitality from the owners made the experience even better. I have tried almost every other spot on island that has Lomo Saltado, and this dish at Ochos blows every other spot out the park. The Carretillero was super flavorful, and even had a nice little kick to it. The vibe inside was super friendly with a great atmosphere. We are so happy we gave this place a try. Service could do a little work. The place wasn't crowded during dinner time, but it was slow. Our waters were constantly confused on what to bring when and where. Having the window open exposed us to the loud noise coming from the busy road, which may have played a part in the confusion on our orders. The horchata was very grainy and shy of any lick of dairy. The yuca fries were good and paired well with the sauce they were served with. The Acevichado had a great sauce, but the fish that was served was funky. I couldn't even try and chew it. The waiter was very friendly to take it back to the kitchen The Lomo saltado was depicted in the pictures as this very succulent , scrumptious, and generously meaty plate of cooked beef. Instead, we were served this tough, and very thin cut of beef. The sauce was very good, but I wish that there were more beef I could pair with all the rice and potato wedges it was served on. There's not much to say about the beef burrito, other than it was okay. I just wish the cooks were as passionate as the owner is.
