Our uber driver on Wednesday 7/22/2026 recommended Merriman's for their mai tais and lobster pot pie. He said that Merriman's is owned by the same people as Monkeypod, the latter of which my friend and her husband recommended when they went in 11/2024. Unfortunately we weren't able to get a reservation at Monkeypod in the time frame we wanted to eat and when I called, they said to arrive 45-60 mins in advance as a walk in. When I looked up Merriman's on Open Table, they had more availability so we made a reservation for 7:45pm on Thursday 7/23/2026. We arrived a little earlier than 7:45pm and they were able to seat us within a few minutes of arriving. Both of us got the mai tais which had Lilikoi foam. I've never had foam on a mai tai before and the foam made it the best mai tai I've had. For our entrees, my mom got the salmon and I had poke and garlic shrimp (2 apps). The fish for the poke was fresh and they added a small amount of red pepper flakes to keep the heat mild. Poke came with amazing sweet potato chips. The garlic shrimp had the perfect combination or garlic and tomato flavors plus tasty bread. My mom said the salmon was one of the best she's had. Waited was friendly and our food arrived quickly. Merriman's used to be my husband and I's go-to spot. We had a magical experience during our first time there while celebrating my husband's birthday, so we started going there around twice a week for about six months straight. We even took family from out of town there once and had a great time as a party of six plus two babies. However, our affinity for Merriman's quickly faded after one of the worst customer service experiences I've had on O'ahu. I made a reservation for my husband, parents, baby nephew, and me for outdoor seating at dinner. I made the reservation for four and added in the comments that we would be four adults and one baby, and required a high chair. When I checked in, I informed the hostess (the short girl with long/thin eyebrows) as a reminder that we needed a high chair, and she confirmed. We waited about 15 minutes past our reservation time to be seated, and when we were, we were given a very small round table with no high chair. So while my mom held my nephew, I went back inside and asked the same hostess for a high chair, again, and mentioned that I requested it on OpenTable. Rather than just saying okay, she takes the time to open my reservation on her computer, and says that I never requested it on OpenTable while rolling her eyes. I'm thinking, even if that was the case, 1) you saw we had a baby with us when we checked in and 2) I've asked for it in person already. In the time she took to open the reservation details on her computer and contradict me, she could have just gotten us the chair. Adding salt to the wound, I guess I was stood there for .02 seconds too long because as soon as she walked away, the other host (the skinny guy with an aloha shirt and a long/straight hair/middle part combo that was reminiscent of Sokka cosplay) goes, "uhhh, can I help you?" in the most insufferable voice possible. Mind you, in the time after we checked in that we waited to be seated, I watched this guy belittle an older woman for at least five minutes by insisting that she didn't have a reservation. Staring straight at his computer and not bothering to look her in the eye, he spoke to her like filth as he insisted that she did not have a reservation with them. She goes, "Are you sure? My name is ____" and he finally relents and tells her he thought her name was something else, and that he sees her reservation now. No apology at all, although he was incredibly rude and the poor woman was clearly in distress. Anyway, once I got back to my seat, the waiter walked by looking curious because we had no high chair and were still having to hold the baby. A few more minutes went by until someone brought it eventually, and it wasn't the hostess. Just wanted to say that the wait staff is generally great (shoutout Ben and Francis, who redeem Merriman's), although inconsistent. We had one time where our entrees came less than five minutes after our appetizer, to which our waiter gave us a "whoops sorry" and carried on. That same night, I had put in our OpenTable note that we were celebrating something special, but no one was aware (of course I could have told our him, but it was for my husband, and he insisted I didn't). The food is also generally great but inconsistent. For a place where you can drop $200 on a dinner for two, you shouldn't have to endure the antics of washed-up high school bullies recreating their glory days before even being seated (we spent $362.99 on the day that happened btw). Especially on O'ahu, where good food is everywhere and many people work hard for their money and to treat themselves, customers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. I want to love Merriman's, but I've only been there once or twice in the past year because of the disrespect and its inconsistency. For other restaurants fit for a special occasion with great food and customer service, I recommend Fête, located downtown, or Pig and the Lady in Kaimuki! read more

If you're even slightly familiar with the Hawai'i' culinary scene, then you know Peter Merriman is an icon. His original restaurant is a cozy little joint in Waimea on the big island that I love. This Honolulu location has a different, upscale city vibe, but still manages to bring the comfort of the original. Rest assured, it's a total knockout in every way! The menu is unique, local, inspiring, and downright delicious. The interior is charming and bright. Service is top tier. And that famous lilikoi foam mai tai will forever ruin all other mai tais for you. There is simply nothing to critique. To top it all off, they have a spectacular happy hour that runs until 5:30. They often feature live music on the patio too, which is lovely. Make sure to book a reservation - it's always busy. But if you can't get in, consider trying one of Merriman's other restaurants instead. Moku and Monkeypod are slightly more casual, but equally good. The menu at Merrimans is the best, but I actually prefer Monkeypod for the amazing ocean views. Moku is a nice alternative because there is rarely a crowd and it's easier to get to. Came here last night after craving prime rib for the past week to try out Merrimen's new-ish late night prime rib $30 special and was not disappointed! The portion size was decent (keep it mind the deal is only valid from 8PM on, and they close at 9, so you want to eat fast.) It came with a few pieces of broccoli and mashed potatoes. I was super impressed because the place was packed! At 8pm, on a random Tuesday night. But I think this attests to how good and comfortable the food is. We asked for outside reservations so we could bring our dog and as soon as we were seated a server brought a bowl of water for the pup! Outside was hot but there was still a breeze. Our Merriman's adventure kicked off right -- we slid in just in time for Happy Hour, which immediately set the tone for a winning evening. The table went full appetizer mode: Taro Hummus (fine, not life-changing), Salt and Pepper Fries (absolute perfection -- do not skip these), Kalua Pig Quesadilla (solid), and the Tako with Country Bread, which was so transcendently good that one member of our party said "forget the entrée, I'm having two of these" and just... did that. A bold move. A correct move. Drinks were mostly a delight -- the Pineapple Li Hing Mui Soda was a tasty little tropical adventure -- but the real surprise of the evening was someone else's root beer. A root beer. Somehow the best one any of us had ever tasted. We're still thinking about it. I expressed that I always wanted to go with my friend, so she was kind enough to take me and make a reservation during the Happy Hour period so we could be thrifty too. Here were my impressions of everything I had this past weekend from most to least favorite: Lobster "Pot Pie" (5/5): For an entree that was $70, I hesitated because I didn't want to be disappointed with 2-3 morsels of lobster. But I was so glad I tried it because they were generous with lobster portions and it was the perfect pot pie crust. "We Mix It How You Like It" Tableside Poke (4.5/5): I was skeptical in how deep in flavor the poke would have when it wasn't premarinated in advance but it was just right. The avo and ono were both underrated ingredients that makes me want to make my own rendition at home. Parmesan Truffle Fries (3.5/5): The crisp to the fries were nice but I prefer my fries to also be more fluffy on the inside. Honorable Mentions (3/5): Roasted Beet & Hirabara Farms Fennel and Ginger Beer, not really much to add, wasn't overly impressed nor disappointed with these items. Overall, Merriman's was great. The service is quick and friendly and the best part is they have hooks to put your purse. Merrimans is airy, well lit and welcoming. We ordered the famous Biscuits with butter, so yummy! Followed by the french onion soup- sweet onions, cheese , bread and the beef broth made for an enjoyable taste. Finally the crispy fish, shrimp were tender and flavorful. They have lunch, happy hour and dinner. I've come at different times but happy hour is my favorite. Prices vary depending what you get but their prices are pretty standard for the area. They are always busy and it can get loud inside if it's busy and you're trying to have a conversation. They also have outdoor seating. They have their famous pineapple foam mai tai and several drink specials and some of their appetizers for a discount led price for happy hour. The green beans are my favorite appetizer since they're crunchy and the chili sauce isn't too spicy. One of the best things we've had also is their late night $30 special prime rib. It's such a great deal and it's really good! Its only available Sunday-Thursday 8-9pm. It does go quick so you should order it as soon as you sit down. Overall service, food and ambiance are great. This was my second visit. This time it was not happy hour so I ordered from the regular menu. I opted to start with the famous Mai tai. It was perfect as usual, with the Lilikoi foam topper. For my meal I opted for the fish sandwich. Our server really sold me on it because of the delicious house made Kaiser roll it was served on. She was right! I was so happy with this sandwich. The fish was seasoned perfectly, cooked just right, and the roll was perfectly chewy on the outside and springy soft in the middle. This is the first time I've enjoyed a Kaiser roll! One thing to note is that it does not come with fries, so you'll have to order those on the side. This was an enjoyable meal inside a modern and comfortable dining room with lovely city views through the large glass windows surrounding us. read more

I tried the beef bourguignon for the first time. The meat was very tender and flavorful. Kind of reminded me of a fancy beef stew (in a good way). My mom got the cast iron chicken. I've gone to Merriman's Honolulu on three separate occasions: to celebrate my birthday, to celebrate a job promotion and on a date. I LOVE it here. Their SZECHUAN STIR-FRY GREEN BEANS WITH MAC NUTS is delicious. It's got a nice crunch and a little kick to it. They used to have clams as an appetizer and it was so good especially with the bread! I ALWAYS order their steak Frites because how can you go wrong with some prime sirloin cooked to perfection and rosemary sea salt fries? I did try their CAST IRON ORGANIC CHICKEN a main dish they're known for and it was juicy, flavorful, and big enough to share with another person. I've yet to try their WAIALUA CHOCOLATE PURSE each of the times I went they ran out of it and I was heartbroken. Maybe on the next visit my luck will change. We had a stroller with us, and they were able to accommodate the stroller. Food: We started with the bag of biscuits and fries to share. The biscuits were pretty good. Enough to share between 3 adults. The fries were standard and delicious. For my entree, I ordered the mushroom ravioli. While the dish does not come with a lot of ravioli, it is a good sized portion and very good. Service: Since it was busy, service was a little slow. Their lunch burger was still good, but it doesn't compare to the Umami burger. My husband thought the fish and chips were good but average. The desserts were great! Merriman's never disappoints. We have been to the Maui location a few times and decided to go to the Honolulu location last night. Another wonderful experience. We started with a classic Mai Tai. I have to say that I am not usually sweet drink girl. I'm usually a straight up vodka martini with a lemon twist. That being said it was very good. So good that I actually had two. My husband had the Umami burger with truffle fries absolutely loved it I had the mushroom ravioli. Both dishes were flavorful delightful. My husband loved his hamburger and I loved his fries. Every time I've walked by this place it always seemed too intimidating to check out simply because it's part of one of the first luxury condos built in Kaka'ako. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the prices were pretty much at par with other nice eateries. We both had yummy the Roasted Beet & Hirabara Farms Fennel Salad, which didn't go over well with my niece who cannot eat cilantro (it was in the dressing, which she had on the side so was provided another dressing). As it turned out there was cilantro & mint in the salad so she had to pick out the cilantro. Thankfully, I love cilantro so I gobbled all of it up. The slow roasted pork was super tender and well seasoned. The crunch from the bean spouts was a nice complement to the sautéed mushrooms and bok choy. Merriman's was a lovely way to end my time in Hawaii on a high note! A bit of a splurge, but you definitely get what you pay for in terms of an elevated dining experience. I started with the oysters, and these set the tone right away; easily the best oysters I've ever had, and I say this despite my Long Island pride. They were so fresh and perfectly balanced, with only simple garnishes (lemon, black pepper champagne vinaigrette) to let the oysters do most of the talking. My main was one of the catches of the day. The fish itself was prepared perfectly; the sauce it came in was a bit heavy/oily but still added nice flavor with a little bit of zest. And the veggies that came with the dish were fine. All in all, a great meal, but I was expecting a bit more in terms of presentation and sauce for my entree. I got an old fashioned as well, props for a solid cocktail! We had the Kalua Pig Quesadilla with House-Made Kim Chee, Poi Crema & Chili Pepper Water,Smash Burger with Cheddar Cheese, Sauteéd Onions, Lettuce, Tomato, Special Sauce,Spicy Szechuan Green Beans that are Pukalani Green Beans, with Spicy Szechuan Sauce, Toasted Macadamia Nuts,Organic Taro Hummus with Pukalani Cucumber, Cherry Tomatoes, Molokai Sweet Potato Chips, and I had the Fish Tacos with Chermoula, Pico De Gallo, Spicy Aioli, Cabbage, Flour Tortilla. I enjoyed trying it all. I really enjoyed the fish tacos. I had the Kewalo Cooler with Kula Light Rum, Watermelon, Calamansi, Cucumber, Mint. It was so refreshing. We had a small bridal shower for our friend this past weekend. Merriman's reserved us a quiet area outside to give us a little privacy. A perfect spot for our small bridal shower. They also provided us with champagne to make a toast. Such great service. The appetizers were all delicious, but my favorite was the tako escargot. For our entree, we had their surf and turf special with their macadamian nut crusted opah and steak. The fish was fresh and soft and add that to a perfectly cooked steak - Delicious! To top off the night, for dessert, we had the bread pudding and chocolate purse. The chocolate purse looks like a small lau lau, but the outer shell is like a pastry that wraps the dark chocolate inside.
