What an amazing find. We were on the way to a different pub when we stopped to review the menu at Ocabanon. A kind couple who arrived just after us highly recommend the food. We changed our plans and set at the bar. This place is the real deal. Other guests sitting at the bar conversed with the bartender and one another in French. We ordered off the happy hour menu: escargot, risotto and oysters. All were delicious and presented well. Please give this place a try. BTW, the prices were more than fair. read more

While visiting New York City and in search of a new French restaurant to fulfill my cravings for the cuisine, we stumbled upon OCabanon with decent reviews and some tantalizing photos of their offerings. Selected Friday night as the perfect moment and made a reservation, in mouthwatering anticipation of a fine dining experience. Upon arrival, I immediately observed the somewhat casual environment, similar to a pub with a bar up front, several small dining rooms in the rear, and an adjoining market for purchasing French foods and accessories. Selecting a table in the largest dining area, we were quickly greeted by Victor and offered regular or sparkling water; selecting sparkling, and received menus and verbal dining recommendations. Our order: Appetizers: Escargots de Bourgogne. French snails from Burgundy baked in parsley, garlic & butter. Salade de Poulpe. Warm octopus, tomato, avocado, arugula salad & lemon dressing. Main Entrees: Filet de Vivaneau, Sauce Matelote Pan-seared red snapper, haricot vert, crispy polenta & red wine sauce. Magret de Canard Roasted duck breast served with spring vegetables, mashed potatoes & red wine sauce. Wine pairings: Clos des Lunes Lune Blanche (Grand Vin Blanc Sec, Bordeaux 2022) Chateau Haut Selve (Merlot-Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux 2019) The meal was flavorful, but lacked an elegant French flair, and was more of a casual bistro, more suited for lunch versus dinner, and the presentation echoed the same. Overall, the meal was refreshing, flavorful, and enjoyable, resembling a dinner that you might have at someone's home and not a restaurant. I enjoyed the Red Snapper, as well as the Duck Breast, but the true highlight of the evening was the excellent service and attention provided by Victor. My Escargot Club met here as a part of our sampling different NYC restaurants. The escargot were pretty good -- very buttery and served with warm baguette slices. The food was so authentic and delicious. The preparations were simple so the high quality of the ingredients came through. The tuna was cooked to perfection, endive salad piled high with flavorful blue cheese that just melted in your mouth. My husband's burger and fries were classic, nice sear on the meat, good crunch to the fries, not to mention the lightest mayonnaise made from scratch. As a starter, we shared a " pate de campagne " it was good and well paired with baguette I had the "poulet façon Georges" and it was amazing : creamy mushroom sauce, green beans, carrots and potatoes, it was amazing ! Ocabanon is the answer to where one can eat well within walking distance of Penn Station: just walk a few blocks and find yourself in a little bit of France, a restaurant that serves up excellent soupe a l'oignon and escargots alongside main dishes like rare salmon and blanquette de veau. I dined at OCabanon with two colleagues, and while it's a bit pricier than my usual spots, the experience was worth it for the thoughtful details. French onion soup was just ok, not mind blowing, I ordered a side salad which was actually delicious and generous portion - I scarfed it down. My first time having escargot, the sauce was excellent! Lunch at OCabonon was one of my birthday restaurant outings. Laura & I had a grand time eating excellent French cuisine. The menu is quite limited in their offerings. We both had escargots sopping up the juices with pieces of bread. Laura chose the wild boar daube with mashed potatoes. I had the skate served also with mashed potatoes and sautéed multicolored. beans. We drank glasses of rose champagne. Crème brûlée was a dessert that we shared. Service here was pleasant. This restaurant means a shed in French and it looked liked one. On one side is also a boutique with everything from books, table linen, yogurts and tins of chocolate all from France. On the other side is a large room with rows of assorted wines. The unisex restroom has an old fashioned weighing machine more for decoration. read more

The service was a bit on the slower side but very friendly. We did not have a late reservation but they did run out of one of the night specials - Chilean Sea Bass. Only one of us at the table could order it. 1. Escargot - Delicious buttery pesto sauce. The escargot came out smoking hot just as it should. The bread at this restaurant is 5 stars! 2. French onion soup - Average. I'd rate 3.75/5. Nothing too special here. 3. Chilean sea bass - Tender, juicy, flavorful! Not overly fishy or salty at all. Came on a mushroom risotto which was cheesy just the way I like it. 4. Complimentary macarons - Blueberry. Not too sweet. Perfect crunch and texture! The vibe is definitely different than I expected. It has more of a modern vibe, with high metal tables, instead of a more homey-French look. It was pretty empty on a Saturday night, so I wouldn't worry about having a reservation. Staff are very attentive. Escargot ($17) - probably about 6 pieces, already de-shelled. Tasted fantastic and a lot of butter. They gave us two baskets of fresh bread, still piping hot, which was a nice touch. Foie Gras ($25) - tasted good, with a decent amount of foie gras. Served with a small salad. Risotto ($28) - mushroom risotto with truffle oil, carrots, leeks, and Parmesan. This was overall pretty disappointing given the price point. Didn't taste much truffle and the leeks were a tad hard to chew. They were quite overwhelming. The huge chips of Parmesan on top were great though. Definitely on the pricier side, but the food tasted authentic. The menu is pretty small, so definitely make sure you know what you're going to get. It's been rough without tourist traffic, but this place ensures and offers an experience that feels authenticity French. Great little French address and restaurant, which has a little "épicerie" attached to it, where one can buy all sorts of imported French goods (cornichons, cereal, cookies etc.). The waiter who served us was French. The vibe is casual, and the wine selection is extensive. The draft beer is also good. If you order bread with your salad, they sometimes will cook fresh bread just for you. A great address to host group events as well, as they have an upstairs space that holds a large group, and where you can host a private dinner event, or cocktail hour, or meeting. I will point out that they add a 3% credit card surcharge, so you may want to pay cash. They didn't tell me this before I paid my bill... wish I'd known. Will go back! read more

I have never really been able to experience a lot of French food especially in New York but was excited to try out OCabanon when my friends suggested it. We arrived on a Sunday night around 7:30 or 8 PM. The restaurant wasn't too busy and we had a nice amount of space to ourselves as a group of six. We ordered at few appetizer platters to share and wow they were so impressive. Great flavor, choices and presentation. For dinner I ordered the risotto and the flavor was wonderfully nice, moist and creamy. It just got a bit too heavy for me towards the end of the meal. One of my friends got their roasted chicken and I believe that is definitely a must order item - lots of well seasoned and juicy chicken meat to chow down on. Since I checked in on yelp I was able to receive a cup of cappuccino and it was just a great way to end the meal. All in all, even though I don't have much experience with French restaurants I found it to be a wonderful dinning experience. My French friend who we went as well complimented the restaurant highly and stated how it just served delicious, non pretentious food. read more

Restaurant is nice. Close to the Garden and Penn. Inside is interesting decor. Chairs are very uncomfortable. One table of our party of 10 was wobbly but server found a shim. Service was pretty good, they definitely tried and that was great. The apps and sides were INCREDIBLE. the entrees were "ok". We ordered one of every side, seasoned well. There was a cassoulet special that was better than ok. Mussels special was good, super salty. The cheese plate for five was good too. The 1/2 chicken was really dry, ratatouille side was really good, but couldn't save the dish. Salmon was served with lemon in cheese cloth but was otherwise unappetizing. The potatoes au gratin with the steak were "good". Close to four stars, but three stars "ain't bad" either. For the price, it was still a decent deal in a great setting. read more

This actually deserves to be downgraded more to a three and a half star review than four. But, I chose to go up to four. Not entirely sure why. We had another wonderful dinner at OCabanon. The food was delightful. I had the Filet Mignon, cooked medium rare. Jayson had the Foie Gras and the Duck Confit salad, two of his favorite foods. As we had a show to catch, this was really just a pop in for a quick date night dinner at one of our favorite finds. Here's why I dropped my original rating to 3 1/2 to four stars -- and really it's for the same reason I should probably have gone with four stars originally since my issue is primarily the same one, and one that seems to be consistent with this place -- I felt both times that we were made to feel less than welcome when we were seated, and almost forgotten about after we got our table. This time it was relatively early, and the place was empty. First they seemed to scoff that we didn't have a reservation. (Again, it was pretty empty, and barely half full when we left an hour later.) We asked to sit at a table in the back room, which is far cozier, which was completely empty, and they wanted to sit us at the two top (the entire room was mostly two tops) that was immediate in front of the server stand, where a server was on his knees getting things out of the cupboard below the register. Why would we want to sit at a table in an empty room where the servers would be bumping into our back, and where there was currently a server getting plates and things out of? Then we got seated. And, much like the first time, it just felt like we were forgotten. I hope it's not because we don't drink. Huge pet peeve. Also I was a bit annoyed that my husband asked TWICE if the duck confit had bones and our server assured him it did not. Then it came out and it had bones. He didn't want to complain. But he HATES food on bones. This could have been avoided. That said, the food is sensational, and it's darling spot, which works well for out with friends (in the front) or more of a romantic night out with your honey (in the back.) Just wish they seemed treated their guests like they mattered a little more. As a result it's gone from my can't wait to get back to list to my if we're near there, maybe, possibly, we might again. This place is super cute for a catch-up with friends. Met my girls here and I noticed some people couldn't figure out the entrance. It can be hidden so keep a lookout when you arrive. It gives a sleek, lounger's paradise feel. Happy hour specials only apply at the bar. Plenty of high-top tables with an area in the back, to the left, for regular tables and seats. Prices are a bit steep. Ordered a bottle of chardonnay ($50) and salmon as my entree ($29). The food came out at a good time so I know they took time to cook it. My salmon came with a variety of vegetables (asparagus, broccoli and carrots, with a side of mashed potatoes. Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE mashed potatoes. The meal was good. Not overly salted and seasoned just right. Cleaned my plate in an instant. Service is attentive without being overbearing so we were able to catch up nicely. Thankfully we had 5:30pm reservations for a Thursday evening because the place was packed. Being the location it is, I had a feeling that would be the situation between drawing from the MSG crowd and those looking for a quick bite after work. I was impressed with the space. Very cute and much roomier than expected as they have additional space in the back which lends itself to a whole other room. Yes still very intimate if that makes sense. The staff were helpful and charming with their French accents. I appreciated we got to sample each glass of wine prior to committing. As for the food I feel this was user error. Instead of sharing French staples we enjoy such as the pate, escargot, mussels and so forth we split their tapas plate thinking great... chef selection of 5 tapas taking the brainwork out of it. Needless to say we were disappointed. It was heavy bread based and not that flavorful. The croque monsieur was dry and even the salmon beet crostini tasted more crostini than anything else. Same for the lobster flatbread. Felt dry and just like eating dough with limited topping. As mentioned we didn't order the way we should have to our liking. I wouldn't discriminate coming back here. I was tempted to give this place 3 stars but because we ordered in the way we did it but deserves the 4 starts due to menu selection, establishment and staff. No customer service! Terrible environment! I came with 20 people. We were in their party room upstairs. We've been coming to this location every other month for years. It's never been for the food. The french fries are always burnt. I've had an undercooked risotto and a different time, a dry, overcooked chicken. Deserts are nothing special. As an amateur baker, I can make much better french patisserie at home. This time, I ordered foie gras. All of us ordered between 7:40 and 8:00. Everyone got their appetizers, and soups, still nothing. Then my friends got their entrees, nada. I asked the staff to check for my order, no response. My friends were finishing up and I asked again, I also asked for the manager and 10 minutes later, again. The food came after 9:00 and then the manager followed soon after. He did not apologize but made an excuse about a busy kitchen. My dish didn't require cooking so this was a bad excuse. Then the manager showed me that the order didn't come to the kitchen until 8:50. I ordered it an hour earlier, Still no apology. This place is terrible. Our group has gotten considerably smaller because people won't come back. Half grumble about the food EVERY time. read more

I've been here twice both times were amazing! Staff: I honestly think this is the most attentive wait staff I've experienced in NYC. When they were packed the first time, nothing but check ins. When I got a PULSD- still attentive. When I see this I'm not saying it lightly or just to be nice. Our water was always refilled, our wine was always refilled; and we were asked how we were and given a cute bon appetit. A napkin was slightly out of place, and my other party stood up, so someone sweetly folded it and gave me a smile. Food: It's was completely full of flavor, right down to the veggies. I am someone who over seasons, my partner under seasons- we were both completely satisfied and didn't need anything. I'm the queen of needing a1 or hot sauce, not at all in this case. Ambience: I do love to complain about music, I'll admit- however in this case it was nice. They didn't do French; but it was quiet and along with the vibe of modern French in NYC. I came here for a one year old birthday party on the upper level which was so nice. The food was fantastic from the tuna tartare, the sliders, the charcuterie board and more. The service was incredible and everyone was so nice. They had cute i love wine pins and stickers for the customers. The best thing is I found a parking spot down the block which is so hard to find in Manhattan on a Saturday night. The service was to die for and the place was so cozy. I only grabbed drinks here for happy hour, but I was very pleased with their wine happy hour menu (red, white, rose, sparkling and sangria). Wines were $7 and seemed to change daily (or weekly). I had a French Sauv Blanc and it was very tasty. For reds, they offered a (red) Burgundy. Pretty legit wine selection for $7/glass. The place itself is adorable, it's very 'wine bar like' and reminds me of being in Santa Barbara or a wine region of Europe. I would expect a place like this at or outside of an actual vineyard. Very authentic. (They had a little gift shop area and an area where it looks like they do private events which is always an A+ in my book). On a Saturday afternoon, circa 4, I decided to drop by this place for a quick snack (and depending on the menu), dinner. Besides just being happy about being indoors in the very cold NYC weather, I was even more excited about the 'happy hour' sign outside the place as well. I stepped in, and found myself the only patron at the place. Also, there was only one person on staff for me to be wined and dined with, the bartender. Later, I would see many more staff coming from the upper level (I think they were having a staff meeting). After seating myself at the bar, the bartender kindly shared both the happy hour menu and the regular menu. After looking at the menu and happy hour menu, I decided to go with a glass of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon) and oysters off the happy hour menu. I got my order in promptly, and munched on the oysters (which were pretty fresh, and had a very good taste). The wine was nice too. Notably, I found the regular the menu lacking in 'affordable' options (average entree looked to be about $24 a plate). Overall, it was a decent experience. The staff was very nice. But I don't think I'd be back there to dine if not for happy hour. read more

I was looking for a place near MSG for a meal before an event and found this place. Not too many people when we came in around 5pm but definitely started to pick up around 6:30-7pm. The food was decent. Onion soup was tasty and great to dip bread into. The rack of lamb was cooked the perfect medium. The presentation was also overall good, although the asparagus with the lamb could have been placed a bit better on the plate. Atmosphere perfect for dinner with a friend or a date. Wish the candle on the tables were real and not plastic. The place makes it like you're in a basement cellar, which I believe is the intended feel. Shelves on the wall are lined with bottles of wine, and there's some old decorations like a giant map and old-fashioned scale by the restrooms. Service was great. The portions are generous and it's great for sharing! I also love the risotto, which is made with mushrooms, truffle oil, leeks, and parmesan - very flavorful and comforting. The salmon is solid as well: cooked rare and served with roasted veggies and mashed potatoes; it's a good traditional option. The Saucisson chocolate is the must-try, though: literally a chocolate sausage! My friends and I ate here again. The proximity to MSG is one reason but the food is definitely a draw as well. This time I tried the hamburger which is stuffed with bacon and short ribs. It was really wonderful. The French fries were nice as well. Due to the blackout at the JLo concert, we ended up going back there while cabs were at a minimum and the subway was closed. We had drinks and snacks. The fries were especially good once again and service was friendly and great. It will continue to be a go-to place for myself and my friends. read more
