I got the Tacos de rib eye and Tacos de carnitas and both came with two each and were very good! I liked the corn tortilla and the amount of meat, along with the salsas they gave me to put on the tacos. Service was fast and it's so spacious inside! I do think the tacos are priced a little bit high but it's a pretty nice restaurant ambiance vs a hole-in-the-wall taco spot, so I understand the menu pricing. read more

Let me start by saying this restaurant is beautiful. I walked in (was not greeted by the host) and asked him if I could sit at the bar and was told I could. I proceeded and while my server (the bartender) was lovely and nice, he seemed to be very busy with other tasks, keep in my mind it was only 4:15 and there was only 2 tables sat in the entire restaurant. When I asked for my check I had to wait at least 10 extra mins as there seemed to be a dinner meeting of the staff in the middle of the dining area (going over dinner courses, etc) that then cumulated with them trying said courses while I waited for my check. My food was ok, slightly bland and the chicken was dry. The portion was small and I didn't even finish. I didn't want to stick around for a second $18 margarita (better HH prices literally around the block). When exiting I was not thanked by the same host as well as a waitress standing there, although I thanked them and I said goodbye. I will not be returning. read more

Tasty, but a bit expensive. I split the quesadilla trio, chiles rellenos, and veggie enchiladas verdes with a friend. The tortillas on the quesadillas tasted fresh. The three had different fillings - my favorite was the slightly crunchy and aromatic poblano. The enchiladas were very tasty due to the bright and herbal salsa verde over top. These came with a side of flavorful black beans. The chiles rellenos were also nice, but the salsa roja felt a bit standard. This came with seasoned rice and the same beans as the enchiladas. The bill came to around $100 for two, which felt a bit steep, but the flavors were nice. The decor is also beautiful, particularly towards the back of the restaurant. read more

Four stars because the mole here is out of this world, one star because what do you mean you're charging $20 for a basic margarita? Came here for an early dinner with a friend because we were both in a margarita mood. I think given the area we both thought maybe there'd be some type of happy hour happening since it was also 5 pm, but we were out of luck. Service was really accommodating though, and our server talked us through all of the options. We got a round of margaritas which were strong but so tiny. Chips and guac hit the spot here, and we split the mole which was outstanding. Ambiance wise it's pretty fancy and high end. If you have an expense account, I would totally come here and take some clients out. If you're here on your own dollar, I hope you have deep pockets. read more

such a great place for brunch! a group of us came on a saturday morning. the service was quick and friendly, and the vibe is fun. easy to chat as it wasn't a very loud place. we got the café de olla which was their house coffee - sweet and cinnamon-y. the elote pancakes are an absolute must (our fave) , as are the churros. for mains, we enjoyed the enfrijoladas, the enchiladas and the benedict. fair warning the benedict was a smaller portion but everything else was a decent size. very solid choice for good mexican food in the area. read more

What can I say... The food was bomb and the decor was even better. No really, this place was so pretty to look at. The drinks were also great and service was top tier (shout out Ronnie). Only thing was I didn't enjoy my pollo en mole verde as much as my homegirls enjoyed the octopus bowl and the chicken enchiladas. Came here on a Sunday night and was a lovely experience. Easy to get a reservation and it was not packed at all. The inside is beautifully decorated and staff were super attentive and friendly. We started with the aguachile which was super refreshing, a perfect portion size to split with someone and came with chips on the side which paired really nicely. For our mains we split the rib eye tacos (comes with 2) which were absolutely delicious and the chicken enchiladas which were also great but could use a bit more seasoning. We also got the esquites which are an absolute must get! The sauce is not too heavy and the entire dish is super comforting. Anyway, we ordered the guac with the homemade large round tortillas to start. I really like this idea- they were sturdy and didn't break as we scooped our guacamole onto the rounds. We also shared the tostadas de cangrejo as another app, the Enmoladas Xico (chicken), and esquites trufados as a side. Portions are on the larger side so we didn't have room to finish the corn. Beautiful restaurant with authentic food in Flatiron. We opted to sit in the back with our reservation, although a smaller restaurant the food is definitely something to come back for. We had the cactus salad guac with chips, crab tostada, tuna tostada, aguachile, mushrooms and tacos. My favorite were the crab tostadas because of the consistency of the crispy tortilla that wouldn't break upon each bite and the crab was also exceptional. The food was made with great ingredients that didn't make you feel heavy or uncomfortable after. Very well prepared and executed! Just wish the restaurant had a bigger space to enjoy. Trying to find a Mexican restaurant with good food AND a good ambiance is tough in NYC. Come to Carmen's for the ambiance but not the food. It's a great place to grab a drink or kill time with people that has a clean aesthetic and the food presentation is nice. But the food lacks flavor. The guacamole was a bit underwhelming and too mushy and watery for my taste. The chips are fried tostadas. A lot of places do this and it's kinda hip. But just plain triangle chips would hold the guac or salsa just fine. My biggest gripe with Carmen's is the portion size as well as the lack of seasoning on the chicken. The chicken in the enchilada was just boiled chicken breast. It sounds like an exaggeration but it's very true. Just plain shredded white chicken breast that was very chewy and got stuck all in my teeth. Plus, it was cold! We had to ask them to reheat our food. This is a great place to hang out. I know reviews are important to the yelp community and I'm trying to be impartial. I looked the tuna tostadas and I liked the branzino. But I gotta say the green mole chicken was gross. I even tried taking it home to "spruce it up" I spruced into the garbage can.. I am Latin but not Mexican so we don't really have mole and it was just not my vibe. The services was good. Wow didn't realize this spot was so close to where I stay. Had the chicken enchiladas verdes that are excellent, the green sauce is not over baring and the black refried beans are cooked to perfection. We started with the beet and greens salad that was excellent, great starter. I wasn't that hungry so didn't try the appetizers not the deserts. Friendly staff and very accommodating. Came on a Saturday night for dinner and was able to get a table for two without a reservation. The space is nicely decorated and feels new. It is bigger than expected as it extends fairly far back and the back room has a sky light. The service is friendly, they constantly refilled our water glasses and changed our plates and utensils between courses. My only minor complaint was it was pretty warm inside the restaurant (the night we went it was 60 degrees outside). We ordered the tostadas de cangrejo (crab) and garnachas for starters. The crab tostadas (two in an order) were refreshing and the tostada was very crunchy. I wanted it to have a bit more flavor overall but the corn and guacamole went well with the crab. The garnachas (3 brisket and potato tacos) were very tasty and came on tortillas with either salsa verde or salsa roja. The salsa roja had a nice kick to it, so if you don't like spicy stick with the salsa verde. For entrees we tried the lamb barbacoa tacos, ribeye tacos and cecina de cerdo enchilada. The barbacoa tacos were a bit disappointing as they seemed to be lacking seasoning/spices and just tasted like lamb. Perhaps that was the goal and I love lamb, but I like my tacos to be bursting with many flavors not just one single flavor. The rib eye tacos were better (could be because they had avocado on them) and I really enjoyed the cecina. It was very thin pork coated in a ton of spices (so much so it was red) and came with rice, beans, sliced onion, sliced cactus, guacamole and 4 tortillas. The rice and beans were okay, but the pork was the star. The pork had an interesting texture, almost velvety and when you put everything into the tortilla together is was delicious. The only thing I could not understand is why they call it enchiladas as it seemed more like fajitas to me but who cares what they call it if it tastes good. For dessert we selected the pastel de elote (corn cake). It comes with either banana, pistachio or horchata ice cream, and we went with pistachio. We enjoyed the corn cake which was surprisingly not sweet which we appreciated but it was more of a corn souffle than a cake. Very soft texture, reminded me of spoon bread. Overall this is a nice place for a meal with good service and ambiance, the dishes just run a bit expensive (2 tacos cost $18/19). read more

We were craving Mexican for dinner, so we found Casa Carmen. A decent spot for elevated Mexican food. Started with the ceviche verde, which was excellent - so fresh and tasty. Tacos de ribeye were incredible. Cooked perfectly, dripping with juice, and served with an incredible green salsa. Enchiladas verde were kind of a miss. The chicken inside was cold and kinda dry. Wish we got more tacos instead of this. I got the pastel de elote corn dessert to go, and it was a great sweet treat. The caramel and banana ice cream went so well together. There are lots of whole corn kernels within the cake itself, which wasn't my favorite but didn't stop us from polishing all of it off. Walking in you will be taken back by such beautiful decor. The place felt very intimate, it's perfect for a date night. Service was attentive and helpful with questions about the menu. The food was fairly tasty but all the portions were crazy tiny and the entrees felt incomplete so struggle to give it that high of a rating. For instance, the fish entree I ordered was cooked well but was literally just a piece of fish in sauce without any sides or anything else on the plate. And for the price point and how much we ordered, and how hungry we still were after we left, it would be hard to justify returning. All that said, if you do come here, we enjoyed the crab tostadas and the corn truffle side, which we found unique. They take reservations on resy. We were able to walk in without a reservation but got the last two seats at the bar. If you want a table, I would recommend making a reservation. read more

We had the guacamole which was excellent (better be in a Mexican restaurant) and the tuna for appetizers. Both were delicious, but the star of the show were the amazing sauces that were brought out which we asked to keep for our entrees. I had the poblano peppers and my husband tacos. I went to this relatively new fancier Mexican restaurant; which happens to also have another recently open location in Tribeca; around a week ago with one of my groups. The prices are a bit high but hey it's Tribeca and the flavors were overall solid with a more interesting menu containing dishes such as panuchos and fideo with a particularly good mole which is what they are advertising here mostly. The woman serving us was very friendly refilling waters whenever it was needed and put up with the person next to me and she was nice enough to even separate the checks at the end for our group of six as the place wasn't super crowded which was very appreciated. I didn't have a drink even though the cocktail menu looked delicious with most drinks being between $17 and $20 outside of $25 cocktail presumably using some fancy aged mezcal or tequila. It's nice to see a Mexican spot in particular with a lot of mezcal cocktails and I'd likely stop by for one of those and an appetizer another time. Another person had the banana old fashioned wish they thought was excellent. I started with the Panuchos Yucatecos with cochinita pibil, refried beans, pickled onion, and habanero for $18 which came with three reasonably sized pieces. Panuchos are uncommon here and you can kind of think of it as being an inside out version of a tostada with the beans inside instead of being on top. The pork was tender and delicious and there was a bit of sourness from the pickled onions and a little bit of spice from the habanero though I think there could have been a bit more heat which was a bit of a theme throughout the meal but I understand them not wanting to make dishes too well picante for the crowd. There was a salsa that was served though I'm not sure if this was with my dish or the other person's but it worked well with the panuchos. The only other appetizer ordered was the Trio de Quesadillas with melted Oaxaca cheese and seasonal vegetables which is normally $18 but they added steak for some reason so it was $28 I believe (she did warn it would be a lot more.) I didn't try it outside of the tender steak but he liked it and it came with two regular quesadillas and one made with blue corn which was a fun spin. My main dish was what they specialize, mole, which is available either as enmoladas or as pollo con mole. Enmoladas simply is enchiladas topped with mole sauce and is my favorite preparation for said sauce. In this case, this dish comes with your choice of chicken or vegetables, mole Xico, crema, cotija cheese, and refried beans and comes in at $28. Mole Xico apparently refers to a mole found in that town in Veracruz and is by comparison slightly sweeter. Said enomladas de pollo was delicious here and not too sweet with a light bit of bitterness from the chocolate and there was plenty of shredded chicken in there. I got it without crema and it was delicious and worth the price though I would say I prefer the more spiced variants of dark mole but this was well balanced. Another person got what I got and some of the others got the more standard Pollo Con Mole Xico comes with a piece of boneless leg and thigh along with sesame and a side of Mexican rice and refried beans and I'm not exactly sure which dish gives you more chicken though that dish might be more filling. The other two got the Enchiladas Verdes with chicken or vegetables, tomatillo salsa, crema, cotija cheese, and refried beans for $2 less. I tried a bit of their verde which was tasty and not too sour from the tomatillos though I preferred my sauce. For dessert, I had the Tres Leches Con Fresas or moist milk cake with strawberries for $14 which also had a whipped cream on top which tasted faintly of strawberries also. The portion size was fine and this was just okay. It was much less sweet by comparison than what I used to which is a good thing though I would say it was a lot less moist. I tried something else which was better which was the Pastel de Elote with warm corn cake and ice cream which is the same price. The cake had a good texture and there was some dulce de leche or something else on top to make it a bit more sweet. The ice cream on the side was banana I believe though from what I can tell from the other person ordering, you could likely switch it up for another one of the daily flavors but I'm not sure. There was also a special which was a chocolate cake which someone else enjoyed. At the price point, I prefer a few other spots such as La Contenta Oeste and Ruta Oxaca for instance but it was still good and better than some of the other fancier Mexican spots such as Empellón Taqueria. I'd probably go back here to try more of the unique small plates or maybe try another one of the main dishes as I would prefer not to pay the same prices for two tacos regardless of the quality. The space is nice, the people are friendly, and the food while pricey was still well flavored. Would go back. Low 4 read more

Wednesday 6pm I went back for the 2nd time and it didn't disappoint, if anything , it was an even better experience starting at sitting at the bar to avail of their happy hour specials where I noticed the space at the right with the high chairs and tables ( I would like to dine there next time ). We were a group of 6 and I made a reservation for 5 . Thanks for the manager for finding a way to accommodate as it was a client dinner . We shared a few appetizers- crab tostada and nachos with guacamole. I had the steak for dinner ( the sauce and the fresh tortilla is the perfect pairing and while it didn't seem like the biggest dish , was definitively filling ). Dessert consisted of the tres leches and churros . This will certainly be a go to spot for me based on good service , great ambiance and amazing food ! Searched for upscale Mexican in this neighborhood and found this location. The restaurant is very attractive and welcoming with two dining areas dimly lit for a cozy experience. The wine list is on an iPad, making it a fun and interactive way of choosing the perfect pairing. We started with the guacamole which was rich and silky smooth. The tostadas were generously heaped with crab and tasted fresh. We ordered a pea stuffed appetizer special that was unique and quite good. The chicken was nice but neither of us loved the Xico mole sauce. It was very chocolatey and just didn't work for us. Had a very nice birthday celebration for a friend at Casa Carmen. For a drink, I had a margarita, which wasn't quite to my liking, and the black lava salt on the rim was very off-putting. The two appetizers we had, the guacamole and the crab & corn on tostadas were both delicious. The rib eye taco, one of the reasons why we went to Casa Carmen, was very disappointing, as the meat had no flavor at all, most likely because it was not seasoned at all and then cooked too long. The side of esquites, a popular Mexican street food, eliminated the step of having the corn kernels sautéed in a pan, so the ultimate charred flavor was very much missing. Another overall miss in all of the dishes was the lack of cilantro, a very important ingredient when preparing Mexican food. We ordered the barbacoa tacos, meat was grey and dry, i was expecting something scrumptious and vibrant. When I hear barbacoa, I picture bursting with flavor, but not the case here. Also ordered the oxaca cheese tacos (cheese portion was good, but the vegetables inside lacked flavor), the scallop entree with chorizo was more of a scallop hash. For $34 an entree, i was expecting beautiful golden brown pieces of seared scallops.
