This place has a very comfy and cozy vibe. I come here a lot with my family and they always find a table for us even with a big baby stroller - despite no reservations. Always very accommodating, nice and friendly. They remember us each time and treat us with lots of care. The pizzas are refreshingly very Italian! None of this crispy undercarriage and crust that's very specific to New York pizza. Many Italian restaurants tailor to New Yorkers and make their pizza crispy. I would recommend the margherita and diavola pizzas but I plan to try them all. The complimentary bread and dip is yummy! Made with lentil, olive oil and capers. The pastas are also fresh and taste homemade. The chefs in the kitchen are very experienced. They also have a bar up front where you can just order bites. Ulivo had been on my list of Italian restaurants that make their pasta in house. Since I was going to be in the Nomad area where the restaurant is located, I reserved a table for dinner. Walking into the restaurant, you notice the beautiful dining area, simply decorated only with lights lining the green walls and the wooden ceiling that was preserved from an earlier time. We felt like we were in the dining room of an old farmhouse in Italy. We were greeted by the host and walked to a very comfortable corner table, the waiter was very nice. We started with a simple salad, lettuce, fennel and tomatoes lightly tossed in a mild olive oil and the calamari, sweet and moist in a light batter served with house made mayonnaise sauce. For the pasta, had the tagliatelle with an oxtail ragu. A very light crushed tomato sauce with bits of oxtail meat. The tagliatelle though served al dente was soft and velvety. Our server was cool, but she did mess up my wine order, even though place was a bit empty and took a while to fix it. I opted for the tuna pasta. Our menu this evening is not a reflection of whats currently on the menu. We had a special curated dinner with a special menu from the chef. First off - every dish was exceptional! Bursting with flavor and the presentation was beautiful. The wine pairings were amazing perfect as well. The establishment is a nice vibe- energy in house was great, each table was nearly filled so reservations are recommended. I love the open kitchen where we can see what's going on. Forgot to mention, but we got the zucchini appetizer and were pleasantly surprised by that! Service (2 of 2 stars): Multiple servers/employees came up to us and kept checking in on us and getting us water. They were all super helpful and I never had a moment where I felt like I was looking for a waiter when my table needed something. Our server was also helpful giving us recommendations when ordering. Food came out quick and courses had a good cadence between each! 3.5 stars Ulivo had been on my list for a while, so, when my friend recommended it for our group dinner, I was looking forward to giving it a shot. The restaurant was an upscale rustic kitchen with wooden, farmhouse-style dining tables and walls decorated with antique cheese graters and cork screws. The staff and atmosphere were cozy and inviting. We began our experience with crusty bread that seemed a bit stale. The toasted slices were served with a soupy lentil sauce that had a nice flavor. I ordered the Nothing to Declare cocktail, because I was thrilled to see that it included so many of my favorite components - mezcal (Siete Misterios), Aperol, Chinola Liqueur (passion fruit), spice, and pineapple, as well as Heering Cherry Liqueur, orgeat, and lemon juice. The magenta-colored beverage tasted like a smoky fruit punch, and I loved its uniqueness. We also shared two appetizers - meatballs and a fried burrata special. The meatballs were made from veal and were braised in a tomato sauce. The delicate spheres were delicious, as was the seasoned marinera. The meatballs were actually the highlight of my experience! The burrata special included a massive ball of the gooey cheese that had been deep-fried, topped with lean prosciutto, and served in that same heavenly marinera sauce. I was glad that the four of us shared this dish, as it would have been way too much for a single person! It was a very indulgent item, but I found it surprising that the cheesy center of the ball was cold, while the rest of the dish was warm. Though I rarely order pasta in a restaurant, most of theirs were homemade, so I thought it would be the right choice on that occasion. I went with the Pappardelle with Braised Oxtail Ragú, after seeing so many positive reviews for it. Unfortunately, I found it just acceptable. I thought that sauce could have used more meat and definitely much more seasoning, like black pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic, etc. It was too one-note. One of my companions had ordered the same thing and agreed with my assessment. Another friend had selected the Malloreddus pasta (dried, not fresh) with a sweet and spicy sausage ragú, and he had felt the same about his under-seasoned dish. The fourth person in our group, however, really enjoyed her pizza, particularly the thin crust. Even after all of that food, we each decided to order a dessert. My Chocolate Salami seemed dense when I was cutting it, but was remarkably light and cakey when I ate it. The chocolate slices were infused with crushed biscotti, rum, and coffee. The biscotti seemed more like ladyfingers, as they were very spongy. I really liked this fudgy dessert and found it much better than the Chocolate Pudding that my friends ordered, which tasted like the generic packaged version. I paired my treat with a decaf coffee, which was rich and delicious. My friends and I finally wrapped up our meal, being one of the last two tables in the place. The staff kindly let us converse without rushing us out the door. Ulivo might not have surpassed my expectations, but it still made for a laidback and fun evening. read more

We booked a table for three here on Christmas Eve early in the evening and came into quarter filled restaurant. The host also ended up as our waitress, but she was excellent. We had a fried burrata appetizer, which had slightly too much dough on it, but it was excellent. We had the Gnocchi, the oxtail tagliatelle and the squid ink pasta. The oxtail and gnocchi were incredible. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce excellent. The squid ink pasta was quite undercooked, but the sauce was good enough to keep eating. The staff, that seemed short at least one server, stuck there on Christmas Eve somehow managed to juggle an incredible amount of people, but that made the meal last longer than we wanted. We will visit again, not on a holiday, to see how it goes. I would recommend eating here. read more

Lovely neighborhood spot with a cozy, modern ambiance. I've only ever had pasta as a main, but their pasta hits every time. My personal favorites are the bottarga pici and the oxtail pappardelle. Most recently, I got to try their carpaccio. The meat itself was exquisite, but I did find that most of the flavor came from the salad topping, but that's just a personal preference. They give you complimentary bread with a lentil dip, which is to die for, though I do wish the bread was warm. I went on Valentine's Day and they gave us a rose for the table, which was a sweet touch. Since we were a party of 8, the restaurant policy requires a card on file for parties of 6+ to ensure a cancellation fee of $15 per guest. Our reservation was set at 7:30 pm Tuesday night, and we were sat immediately when our party was fully assembled. The vibes were lively, fun, and great. The only issue was that our waitress disappeared for 10-15 minutes and another waiter took our menus to "restart the service" though we ordered appetizers and but no orders to kitchen for pasta nor drinks. We decided to go family style and we were quite full after the appetizers of fried eggplant, bread, pizzas and more. We ended up sharing 1 pasta between 4 people. They don't know how to cook we ordered 5 different pastas: 1st was undercooked, 2nd too salty and 3rd too dry, the last two were fine but not amazing. It's too expensive for shitty food with no meat on it. Service was bad, waiter just took our order and most of the time busser was taking care of us and he gave us wrong food because waitress didn't mention who ordered what. Ulivo is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in the city. Every time I've gone it's been great to amazing except for tonight when I tried the tasting menu... I guess they're trying new things. It was... terrible. The sausage rabe appetizer and the pappardelle with nduja, octopus and red win sauce were so salty they were inedible. The only good thing was the three pieces of sausage in the appetizer. The rabe and pappardelle were pure salt. I ate about two pieces of rabe and half the pappardelle which was too much and now I feel sick. The tasting menu also comes with only alcoholic drinks and no dessert which isn't great. I've literally never had anything bad on the regular menu but this tasting menu is very bad and at least these two items are terrible. Go and stick to the regular menu. read more

Not much on the menu at Ulivo will surprise you-- they serve a really standard menu of Italian classics, like salad, pizza, pasta, and antipasti. Sometimes, that's exactly what you want, like a nice bowl of comforting pasta, a glass of aperol spritz, and some good conversation, which is why I found myself at Ulivo one recent evening. Reservations were not needed as the dining room sat mostly empty on the night I visited. The space was beautifully decorated, and in the empty space in this prime location already had me suspecting the food was probably pretty lackluster, which turned out to be true. I was dining with someone who is Italian and likes to judge a restaurant by their most basic dishes, so we ordered a margherita pizza and pappardelle fresche con brasato di coda alla vaccinara (oxtail ragu), and a basic, arugula, parmesan salad. Sometimes basic dishes will taste amazing if the kitchen knows what they're doing, but everything we had lacked any punchy flavor, so much so that we left food on the table-- a rarity for me. I did enjoy the wine selection and my aperol spritz was pretty solid. I'd come here for a drink and maybe an appetizer but would save a full meal for elsewhere. read more
