I'm going to visit someone out of state and was trying to get local items to make a gift basket. Arrived here and I noticed that there were lots of folks with computers who were hanging out (think of the other big chain coffee place) however this place had a better vibe, in my opinion. I stare at the coffee options and since my knowledge of coffee is zero, I explained to the lady that I was buying coffee for someone not knowing if they like coffee and she made some suggestions. I decided to try what I was gifting and then told her the only catch is I like my coffee sweet. She suggested adding whole milk and their in house vanilla bean syrup. I nodded and then asked for the avocado toast which she explained to be smashed avocado, a slice of tomato that's topped with a little salt on their in house made sour dough bread. Simple enough. I stood over by the side and my drink came out in a mason jar . . . Cute. Sip, eyes widen a little, okay, this is good. Then the toast comes out and I'm like it looks simple, cut into it (cause it came with a folks and knife) and I'm taking notice that the bread is thick and toasted. I take a bite and I'm like this is good. Like it's real good. I stand at the little counter and eat my toast while looking out on the street and watch people come in and out and sip my iced coffee down to the very last drop and I'm content and full and think "okay, I see what you did there" - I will say I recommend some bacon on that toast but seriously it was good. Overall I'm excited to give the coffee and hopefully they will love it just as much (I did ask if I can buy some of that syrup but was told no - pffff!) because I'll definitely be back. Absolutely incredible! I am in love with this coffee house. From the recycled espresso machine hardware serving as door handles, to the warm honey brown tones of the stamped tin counter and reclaimed brown and teal barnwood planks, this coffee shop oozes caffeinated cozy, comfort. I tried a summer seasonal pour over coffee and it was heaven. Light, crisp, yet flavorful- it didn't need any cream or sugar - I just enjoyed the flavor. I also tried a large cinnamon roll - it was not too sweet, very soft and delectable. They did not stint on the cinnamon! I'm sure I'll be returning to this coffee shop again and again. read more

I feel like this review is necessary for people checking Yelp as I did prior to visiting Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters. I stopped in before a round of golf at Steven's Park and asked the guy at the counter if they had any specialty lattes. He rudely replied "we don't do that". Ok, I ordered a cold brew and an iced tea to go. I was told they use jars for to-go cups and there would be a deposit. I asked if I had to bring it back and he said "No, it's yours to keep." I paid $13 for these two drinks. I literally watched this man open a 12oz sealed glass "beer bottle" of cold brew that I could have gotten for a few bucks at the gas station and pour in into a washed out sauce jar without even a cube of ice. The jar didn't even seal properly. For $13 I had pre-bottled cold brew that tasted like dirt slosh around and leak in my car until I could find a trash can to throw it in. My boyfriend's iced tea was fine and served in a mason jar that at least sealed tightly. The entire experience was absurd and I wish I had known so I could have avoided this place. If you like polite service, sealed cups, good coffee, ice, or straws then definitely avoid this place. read more

The quality does not excuse the snobbery. If you are going to severely limit and control the experience of the coffee you serve (no milk alternatives, no to-go cups, no WiFi, etc.), it had better be incredible. No. Actually, it had better be mind-blowing. Spoiler alert, it wasn't. I ordered a good-not-great cappuccino with slightly bubbly foam and severely under-seasoned avocado toast. Having visited and worked in some of the better coffee shops in the country, Oak Cliff wouldn't make it to the top of my list, not even close...which makes the controlling and overly idealistic nature of this shop really puzzling and pretty frustrating. Exclusivity is not inherently a bad thing as it can result in creating something great. But this shops' decision-making is disillusioned, which consequently hurts people, makes people feel less than they should, and produces an elitism that is not making this world a better place. Not to mention the fact that it excludes the local low-income community this shop is located in. Do better. Please. And maybe consider that not everybody can drink whole milk? read more

This was such an odd experience all around. I live about 5 minutes from this place and happened to be on this side of the neighborhood and decided to stop in and support somewhere local before I had to drive up into North Dallas for a meeting. I walk up to the counter and start staring up at the menu and can't find any coffee menu, just food. No big deal, I order my go-to, an iced vanilla latte with oat milk. I'm told they ONLY serve whole milk. Which is... odd for a modern local coffee shop but whatever. The drink finally comes up at the bar in a glass mason jar. I apologize to the barista and ask if I could get it in a to-go cup. Her response is "this is our to go cup, you just have to pay a $2 deposit, if you bring it back you'll get the $2 back." Ok.. another oddity. I have to make another transaction on my credit card for the $2 deposit on the jar. I'm all for sustainability, but at a minimum make it clear before ordering that that's the process. Ask if I want it for here or to go and explain the deposit system if I ask for it to go instead of making it overly complicated. As for not having milk alternatives... same situation. At least have it on the menu or posted somewhere. read more

Love the vibe of this place. The wood and metal accents create an awesome feels that encourages one to work or study. I opted for the drip coffee and it was spot on. My only caveat is that they don't offer WiFi. I came to get some work done, have a coffee and grab a bite to eat. I only got coffee because, without WiFi I cannot work. And if I cannot work, it makes no sense for me to buy anything to eat. If they ever offer WiFi this would be a good place to come study or work and gain an extra two stars. One of the best coffee shops I've been to in Dallas. The coffee is painstakingly made, the baristas are friendly and approachable, and the coffee is very balanced. The cappucino is one of my favorites, as it has a lovely creamy year soft texture, while still having the delightful aroma and punch of coffee. We were also tempted by the goat cheese and fig scone, particularly since the barista took them from a steaming hot baking sheet. Perfectly crumbly with a lovely rich flavor of cheese combined with the delightful sweetness of the fig. A yummy combination that worked well with the coffee. I'd stop by anytime. read more

One of my favorite coffee shops in town, and my favorite roaster! I used to work for coffee roasters, and I buy my whole beans here to brew at home. They also have excellent baked goods, house made chocolate, and small bites for breakfast. Their salted chocolate ship cookies are INCREDIBLE! I love this place because it's an authentic, scrappy, creative, locally owned spot reminiscent of how coffeeshops used to be in the early 1990's before Corporate Coffee took over the world. The shop opens at 6am and the mornings are always buzzing with locals having their morning ritual cup, meeting with friends, or reading. There is free parking on the street in front and in the lot behind the building. There are three minor quirks of this place to be aware of: 1) They don't have wifi, so you have to tether with your phone or hotspot. It's probably better that way. 2) They close at 4pm. I usually crave a cup of drip coffee and a change of workspace around 3-3:30pm, so by the time I get there, they are about to close and are often out of fresh drip coffee for the day. 3) They don't have disposable to-go cups, and instead serve to-go drinks in a glass jar with a lid and a burlap sleeve for insulation. They require a $2 deposit for the jar, which is refunded if you bring it back. Their commitment to reducing garbage is commendable, but I don't stop here for a to-go coffee for this reason, unless I have my own mug with me. Despite my insignificant complaints, I love this place and highly recommend it! read more

And, even nicer to see a roaster and cafe' do well here in the Cliff. Oak Cliff Roasters has Magic smells. They have a bakery that makes sourdoughs breads and other treats, coupled with it's coffee, is worth twice the price, just to sit here and enjoy the nose of bread and coffee. Basically, I know what I like, it's that simple. Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters source their high quality, fair trade green coffee beans. And roast them to their own uniquely branded style. The aromas this afternoon are intoxicating. I really dig the smell of coffee being roasted and brewed. Today I opted for the spicy, but slightly sweet Chai, which to me is a classic Fall drink. This little adorable coffee shop with charming lights down it's side alley, always makes me smile, until recently, now it's with bittersweet memories. The owner purchased a retired 1950's Dallas public bus and parked it off their patio. It was my friends Sam's favorite spot to chit chat. He and I would sit inside that converted bus, him telling me funny, goofy stories of growing up as well as what was happening in his day to day life. We were close. But our friendship was complex. I tried my best to be positive, offer support, be encouraging, and just be there to listen. Sam had intense anxiety and depression. He constantly and consistently fought his demons, shaping a beautiful life chalked full of happy times, friends, and memories. Sadly, he lost his personal battle and passed away this June 2018. Suicide hurts. There are no goodbyes. There are no hugs or kisses. No time to say how much that person means to you or how much you will miss them. He is gone. The bus is still here, but it is littered with memories of days past. Some bitter. Some sweet. Memories. From the bottom of my heart. I will always LOVE you Sammie. ALWAYS!! For me, it's the small things of life that we can and get to appreciate. Life is like that, we get to pick and choose the things to be happy about or not. Personally, I would rather be humbly content than blissfully disappointed. It's tough sometimes though. Im in Dallas all week, and I'm driving from downtown every am to go here. It is somewhat out of my way, but well worth it. The scent of fresh out-of-the oven orange almond scones welcomed me at the door today. Those things are out of-this-world yummy. The quality of coffee drinks is outstanding. Coffee was ok. No complexity to the taste whatsoever. Not even close to the quality you can get in Austin/ San Antonio or even Houston. Coffee (latte) was good (not amazing; just good), but used whole milk, not skim as I'd asked for (twice). Spicy Peach jam was really good. Barista looked at me like I was a dunce (with a big no) when I asked for any kind of a bowl or glass for water for a dog outside on an 86 degrees day (while I drink my coffee as they don't have to go cups). "To go" cups were $2 for a cup (glass). Admire the environment focus (or was it for cost savings- they wrap cardboard around the glass and use paper napkins) but that's still a big markup on glass, when I only wanted the coffee inside it. Felt looked down on by the cashier when I asked what their sizes are (was told in a snobby voice looking down his nose, "the size will be appropriate for the type of drink you order"). Next time will go to the coffee shop I had passed with a dog water bowl outside and to go cups where they will TELL me if they don't serve nonfat milk and won't just give me whole milk anyway, which I couldn't drink.
