Cannot remember how my places I have had pizza and submitted reviews. Most have been good to great. NY Pizza Dept unfortunately falls into the Just Ok bin. The venue is nice, comfortable and the staff is attentive although I did get a take away order, I was offered a drink while I waited. I ordered a medium with pepperoni and mushrooms, came to just over $25. In less that 15 minutes I was on my way home for some pizza. Initially, it looked a little undercooked, with the crust just lightly brown and the cheese and toppings looking a bit...well not right. As I broke off the first slice I could tell that is was definitely undercooked as it flopped off the box. The crust was mushy inside, the cheese and toppings were greasy. Some may like it that way, maybe I should have requested a few extra minutes of cook or well done, but if this is how it regularly is served then it is certainly not for me. I picked off some of the pepperoni and ate some of the crust that looked done and that is about all I could manage. With so many pizza places in this area to choose from, I certainly would not recommend or return to NY Pizza Dept. Ordered online for a pick up. There were three ladies at the counter and one gentleman being helped. Literally they just pretended I wasn't there until I said "excuse me, I'm here for a pick up!" My pizza was so dry and THIN and barely even warm, I don't recall it being like this. Luckily I did order the cheese garlic bread and they were really good with the marinara sauce. After four years we came back. I'm glad I did, it seems like there is new management. We came in and got seated after a few minutes. The manager came over and greeted our table! They gave the kids dough to play with while we were waiting on our food which was super nice! The kids loved it, we actually just came back from the children's museum so that just added to their experience for the day. The waiter was very attentive. It was pretty empty inside. Very clean. The food took about 25-30 min. Food was hot , tasted good. The kids meals are a great portion size. The pizza bites on the kids menu is two slices of pizzas cut up, def not what we expected but still good and might order it for myself next time lol. Wings were average. It's been several years since my wife and I had been at NY Pizza Department (formally know as NYPD Pizza) There menu seemed to have less items on it. Our waiter Joseph was great . After we had our pizza he told us about the changes that been made since Covid took place. He's an ex New Yorker ( like myself), so that will get you extra points in my book. I did a pick-up order here on a Saturday where it was 112 degrees outside and didn't want to move. I ordered a custom pizza with mozzarella, spinach, mushrooms & ricotta. I also ordered the garlic cheesy bread and the fried zucchini. I arrived right when my order said they were ready, and it was ready to go! Garlicky, fluffy, and cheesy. They were among of the best I've tasted. And we ended up having the Mott's Street Lover pizza and buffalo, both of which were delicious! The pizza's bottom had the perfect crisp and toast, and the cheese pull was fantastic. And the buffalo was truly outstanding. The server suggested removing the gorgonzola cheese, which I agree with! This place honestly used to be one of my favorite pizza places. That was probably about five years ago. I think they've gone downhill. I paid $35 for the 16 inch (they say it's 18 inch on Yelp but I'm pretty sure it's 16 inch on Grubhub) bad boy... definitely not worth it. I think there are better options like Mellow Mushroom or Clockwork Pizza if you want some good New York style slices. The dough was, tough the toppings (of which, are 4$ a topping) definitely didn't seem worth it. I got a typical mushroom pepperoni pizza. I was doing a long walk to the state Capitol from midtown and found this great pizza place. I was very hungry having 2 pizza slices(pepperoni and sausage) and a fresh salad with bleu cheese dressing. The salad tasted really fresh with nice, crunchy lettuce and crisp tomatoes. The slices tasted outstanding with loads of meat and delicious, tangy sauce. The best part is just 2 slices are the size of a medium pizza at other places-HUGE!!!! Service by Manager Liz was great-friendly and fast. Surprisingly good pies. I say that from proximity bias; grew up on the east coast and the pies in Philly, Jersey, and NY are tops. Pizza Dept. gave a reminiscent taste of that area (really haven't found a place to match the tomato flavor from out that way). Pizza was hot, and ready when I got there. We ate here for a late lunch based on a reservation. The inside was dark and comfy. Our waitress was friendly, and the food was good. For an appetizer, we had the garlic cheese knots, which were kind of a hot mess but tasted good for comfort food. My wife thought her Chelsea Chopped Salad (a healthy serving of mixed chopped greens, Gorgonzola cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, sliced almonds, bacon, cucumbers, and NYPD's own blend of its house and ranch dressings) was very good. I think the real story and what makes NY Pizza Department memorable is their water filtration system that makes the pizza taste like it's from NY. This really matters to provide an amazing crust. I also like that when you order a pizza, you are able to order multiple pizzas from the menu for half and half. We had half Bruschetta and half Brooklyn Family (Pepperoni, sausage, and fresh basil). Why can't everything be perfect? I recently placed a large catering order from this location. The service was exceptional! I called before placing my order and asked how far in advance I would need to place it. I was basically told the more notice the better, but even just a couple of hours was OK. When I called back to place the order, I was transferred to a manager who was on his game. Courteous and professional, he answered all my questions and even made recommendations about how we should customize our order. "Service like this still exists?!" I thought whimsically. Wait, it gets even better. The delivery driver, Ivan, was even 15 minutes early. "Is it OK if I go ahead and drop this off?" A huge catering order that arrives early? By all means, Ivan! So, what's the problem? The pizza and wings were not good. I had never dined at NYPD Pizza before (the name alone is pretty enticing) but this was NOT New York pizza, at least not the kind I'm used to. We ordered a huge variety of pizzas from their Promenade catering package: Brooklyn Family, Pizza Blanca, Fran's Favorite, Joey's Favorite, Big Kahuna, a Cheese, and of course a Pepperoni. They were all like cardboard. No texture. No life. Not even very visually appealing. The best of the lot was the Pizza Blanca. The BBQ boneless wings were not much better. Kind of dry and not too much flavor. I also ordered a dozen cookies and those were popular. Sigh...so many reviews on Yelp complain about lackluster service and the present problem of understaffing. Not so at NYPD Pizza. If I could give them 10 stars for service, I would! For food? Three at best. Fix the kitchen! read more
