The first time I went to this cafe was for a poetry night. It was a lot of fun, and the cafe had a good vibe, and it was really cute inside, especially the local art. The selection of drinks was pretty great, you can get beer, coffee, kombucha, tea, a mushroom latte, and then buy some nice trinkets or a poetry book. It's everything I missed from my little hippie town in New York. Also, staff is really cool and helpful. If they had more snacks, I would be pretty happy because I think most of us people there for poetry are usually high lol. read more

Cool little spot in Northtown Arcata. Not too hard to find, it's right along G street before you get to the freeway to exit out town. Parking is only street and around there, it's a little tougher to find, but not too bad. I walked there so it wasn't an issue for me. Walked in to find a pretty spacious place with fair amount of tables. Good study place I would say for students who are looking for a cool and moderately quiet place to study. Nice vibe with paintings and other posters on the wall. So now it's time to order something and walk to the counter to be greeted by one of the barista. He's having a discussion with one of his buddies and he keeps going... Until he's done before actually acknowledge me and asks me in an almost annoyed tone what I wanted... I'm like thinking, ok this guy just doesn't want to be here... But then again, I finish ordering and stand to the side, when I see him in the back with the other barista and their making funny faces to a selfie... Even more confused... Either he don't want to be here or he actually doesn't want to work... Anyway, same thing with the other barista, she was working but barely even wanted to go beyond just doing her job before. After dropping my drink off, she went back to the back to joke with her other co-worker... Now the reason why the rating is actually the coffee. In itself, the mocca frappe that I ordered tasted fairly good. It's got a good kick of coffee with the right amount of sweetness that I like. Pretty well blended with no chunk of ice and very good consistency. Pretty impressed given the people there... Slightly pricey, $6 for a frappe 20oz, which is a bit much. Even Starbucks don't cost as much. Anyways, my rating for this place would be a 3 stars for the good type of coffee and variety they have. Good space with nice vibe. What takes it down is the help. Just to say, a smile goes a long way and does also take away from however nice the place is. Parking didn't really account in the rating of this place. It's a small town, so I don't expect a Walmart parking lot. It's also on the pricier side for coffee. Not to be negative about this place, I do like to give second chances, therefore I would go again for another drink but crossed finger, people working there are in a better mood. Cheers! Ok, so five stars really?! So I give it to the barista who was working his behind off, but the girl taking the orders was very disorganized and the girl "cooking" moved at a snails pace. I watched flies landing on food waiting to be picked up, I watched another customer throw away nearly her entire waffle, and my everything bagel was average. This place is expensive so I'll only go here on special occasions. But I really loved this place. It has a great atmosphere. Lots of indoor and outdoor tables to take advantage of their free wifi. Great coffee shop in Arcata. Excellent coffee and a nice mix of students, hipsters, and local aging hippies & former hippies. Good beers for later in the day and a beautiful deck for sunny afternoons. The morning pastry selection was heavily weighted to vegan and gluten free but still offered tasty items to go with the excellent espresso drinks. Decor was psychedelic paintings and murals. Service was a tad slow for this Bay Area resident, but matched the pace of the community. read more

My son got a chai drink that is his usual there when he needs a good, spicy pick me up for school. It is easy to get to and a quick entry back onto the highway. One of my favorite coffee shops in my cross country trip. Why? They have all sorts of events going on. Tuesday is Spoken Word (I didn't go but I'm guessing it's poetry night). Saturday they had live music (people from all over the globe would play from Spanish guitar to dark electro guitar). Sunday was comedy night (locals would come and improvise a few skits). In regards to the coffee, I ordered a few capuccinos and lattes and they were good. They weren't the best I've had but nothing to complain about. They even made me a vegan version of their hot chocolate one day and I really liked it. They had smoothies and burritos but I didn't try them. I did try their vegan cheesecake and it wasn't good. The chocolate almond balls were decent. Staff was always very friendly and the owner was always around saying hi to everyone. Really liked the environment at this little shop. read more

Overall, my experience here was unremarkable. Very little sets Northtown apart from any other hip coffee spot in the Pacific Northwest. The coffee was quite good, but that's to be expected from a coffee shop. My breakfast sandwich was mediocre at best, and both times I ate there the order was messed up. The woman running the register and taking orders is sweet and did what she could to remedy the situation, but realistically, I overpayed for food that underwhelmed and had to wait quite awhile in line to get an egg on my egg sandwich. My girlfriend was fine with the food, but not altogether impressed, and she found her chai to taste more like a garam masala milk sauce than a chai. The second time we came back she didn't get her tea for over half an hour after ordering it. All in all, the service was friendly, but neither prompt nor accurate. Unfortunately, this disconnect is what makes this place mediocre. Small tweaks in the communication between the Front and Back (specifically the woman behind the register and the kitchen) would make this place a much better experience. The atmosphere is nice, and they use quality ingredients. in its current state, I could understand stopping here on the way out of town headed north for a quick meal and coffee before the road, but when I have the choice I'll be taking my cravings for basic breakfast and coffee elsewhere from here on out. read more

I finally made a visit in since it's been Muddy Waters back in the day and to thankful surprise the coffee is delicious and made with extraordinaire, even their cups are awesome. Behind the counter crew are great, seemed tuned into the business, not just collecting a paycheck, much appreciated. Love the atmosphere, cool vibe but the two times I've been in, the tables haven't been clean, fairly grimy and freaks me out with it being cold season or setting my computer on it. Arcata is my hometown, and this iteration of coffeehouse on this property is, in my opinion, the best that has ever been here. With a great selection of coffee and organic/vegan options that taste better than chalky pretenders at some other local establishments, the only reason this spot gets 4 rather than 5 stars is a midge of predatory pricing. This is the closest study-friendly cafe to campus, and as such enjoys a steady stream of the studious to keep the awesome Batista busy. With this in mind, North town would not suffer to make more competitive prices and ease up on the starving student budgets. Yes, coffee is a luxury... But its also part of a well balance insomnia-driven students life! (Also, may solicit more tips for your employees) As for specific awesomeness, I will highlight two things that make me stop in here whenever I am in town: First: a legit mocha Borgia. Orange zest in long pulled espresso create a savory rather than than sweet treat that is my absolute fave! I try to have this replicated elsewhere, but these guys are outright the best. Second: the help. I have had some great conversations with nearly everyone I have had help me here. The atmosphere must do them well, because I've never seen them spreading negativity or angst. Smiles and convoy shallow or deep abound from this group, and its infectious. read more

Everyone who works here is cool, owners/management are so accommodating and friendly. Community minded. Great coffee and espresso with a rotating single origin offering. A few baristas are legit beanheads and take pride in their work, but even the ones who are less enthusiastic about coffee itself seem happy about working there and pull a competent shot. Unique add-ins like medicinal mushrooms or CBD oil make their approach to espresso drinks truly one of a kind. I've probably earned at least ten free coffees from filling loyalty punchcards. Only complaint is that they don't open earlier to accommodate my sometimes crazy schedule, but most people will find their hours reasonable. read more

This place has some really great, quick and delicious food! I met my boyfriend here for a quick lunch today. It was warm and sunny out (rare in February for Arcata) and they have a porch. Got the full size salad and the Club sandwich served with a genuine smile from the owner. Awesome spot to grab a bite to eat as well as your mid day Java fix. They had a fabulous looking specials board too; pumpkin spiced chai and matcha tea latte...mmm! Excited to go back and try those out! I love north town coffee! I lived in Arcata for about 6 months. Although I lived on the other side of town I'd always make that gnarly bike trip up the hills to go there. The coffee is delicious. I loved the honey bee latte which had the pollen in it. I had it iced and hot. I'm not sure which I prefer more because they were both so good. Although the space is small I really enjoyed the live spoken word jams and the welcoming atmosphere. I'd always go to get some work done with laptop and It was such a nice relaxing place to be. The coffee here is yummy. I am from out of town so I didn't get to try a bunch of items, but my bf recocmended this place and I was not disappointed. I got their spechial Honey Bee Latte: expresso, "cow or soy milk" and toped with bee pollen. And sweetened with a touch of honey. Super yum! I also go their strawberry scone. It was more moist than a typical scone and sweeted with something diffrent- honey? Molasses? That gave it a unique flavor. It was good but I probably wouldn't order it again. My bf got the Dreamy Chi: Chi Latte with white chocolate. Was quite good. And a poo bear sandwich: toast with peanut butter, banana and honey which tasted excatly like you would think it would, although the toast was cold? Might have sat to long before it got to us. The atmosphere was a hipster blend of comfort, bohemia, and pertention but overall inviting and fun. I enjoyed our quick, casual breakfast experiance here. Breakfast burrito is expensive and tasteless. When I bit into it I kind of thought it was the same as how a hippy fart might taste. Salsa was almost non existent and not real; Portlandia salsa. Two tiny shreds of cheese. Mostly a big bland mass of eggs and black beans. Won't return although coffee looked good. read more
