Standing at their menu was a bit intimidating as many of their options were things we had never heard of, and felt earthy-organic to the max! We ended up asking a few questions, and ordered a version of our somewhat"normal" drinks! (No shrooms in my java ;-) The coffee was yummy (I ordered an iced vanilla latte with oat milk, and my man ordered one of their yummy Oreo lattes hot.) The gal at the register was super sweet, as we asked a bunch of questions about local beach options, and places that were her favorites! She made the experience much better than the drug-induced looking pictures hanging on the wall. (Including in the bathrooms) It was a "vibe" for real, and would make someone trippin' sure feel at home....That is just not for us.... We sat down for a few minutes and got a few looks because we were chatting and having a nice conversation, and obviously were in our normal state of mind. Could be such a sweet space, and the patio is top-notch. It would also be wonderful if they would make it more welcoming to those who are not spending the day smoking something. The College coffee house, close to campus and always busy when school is in session. When it's not though, the place is actually enjoyable to sit in the sun and relax with your favorite caffeinated beverage. I'll admit I seldom stop when school is in, but try to when it's not. The coffee is good and the staff are always very friendly and kind, and this eclectic little java house has a cool vibe all it's own. Worth a visit if you're in the area and in need of caffeine. Always seems to have trippers and transients "hangin" out in front which is just minor annoyance to me but I'm a big gruff old man - I'm sure for some people though it could be intimidating and a deterrent. 3.5 Stars - a cool little coffee shop with great staff and good coffee 00580 read more

Just stopped in for my first time after seeing some photos of the new food options on Instagram. Maybe Mondays are the wrong day for that as there was only a small selection of your basic coffee house pastries/muffins, not the savory/gourmet items I'd hoped for. Beyond that, the young man behind the counter had zero customer service skills bordering on being rude. Mine was the only order and it took him a long time to make 1 coffee. When my order was ready he just put it under the "pick-up" sign and stared at me until I got up to get it. I then tried again to get him to participate in his job and said thank you to him with no response...I then said have a good day to which he replied "yeah" with an eye roll. It's the horrible service that made me get in my car and write this review. A pretty bad first impression, with so many other options near by I probably won't be back. **Edit: I was so disappointed with this experience that I wrote the review before I even tasted the mocha I had just paid and tipped the rude guy for...it was friggin AWFUL!!! This is the local gem of coffeehouses for speciality coffee drinks and a laid back atmosphere. I recommend the Dank Side of the Moon. It's some concoction of espresso, hemp milk, chocolaty goodness and I top mine with cayenne. All the fancy drinks are worth a for-here mug to sip on while getting work done. read more

Hungry, we stopped in for a bite of lunch yesterday. I ordered a seven-dollar smoothie and a bowl of mushroom & wild rice soup. My girlfriend ordered a cup of the same soup with a slice of quiche. Now let me say, I've eaten mushroom soup for over 50 years all over the world, and this soup was disgustingly bad, with a bunch of ground-up organic, gluten-free, non-GMO weirdness that soaked up any broth whatsoever before it had even the slimmest chance of calling itself a "soup". The flavor was reminiscent of what an inmate might remember from days in the county lock-up. The quiche tasted old, had a "grey" tinge to it, was devoid of flavor. On our way out, we asked the gal behind the counter just what the ingredients in the soup were, and she shrugged, and gave an earnest "I don't know". If all of Arcata was distilled into a coffee shop, this would be it. For better or for worse. The actual food and beverages I've gotten here have been good, overall... Or at the very least, they met my standard expectation. However, the interactions & general feeling I've gotten from the customers who tend to loiter directly outside and sometimes the employee's inside are occasionally off-putting. This place was THE place for coffee. Their coffee was good quality and they even serve alcohol. The patio is pup friendly but Alley opted to nap on the car because she went fishing all morning. We only tried the black coffee but next time we will try the bee. The staff is friendly and it looks like there are a lot of events hosted on a regular basis. They had a sign out front to try their rose matcha latte. I did and it's the worst matcha latte I've had...and I've had a lot. They barely use any matcha powder. They stir in the powder vs whisking it which means what powder is in the latte is just chunked up. There's no foam at all which is probably because they use their house coconut milk. It's REALLY oily and I wish they had warned me when I ordered it. It's not like normal coconut milk I'm used to. It takes like drinking coconut oil. The result is a warm oily coconut drink - no rose and no matcha flavor. The people there are super nice and they had a ton of interesting drinks. It seems like people love everything else. They just shouldn't advertise a matcha latte if they aren't going to execute it well. It's so bad I would have returned it but I left town. read more

I just recently moved up here for school and had some time to myself so I stopped in for poetry night (Tuesdays from 6-8pm). I ordered a mocha and being a bit of a coffee snob, I was a little hesitant because I am especially picky about mochas, I like them not too sweet but not extremely bitter. I am being completely honest when I say it was one of the best mochas I've ever had, even better than some of my favorite mochas back home in San Diego. They are a great local coffee joint with a lot of awesome staff members and great community events. I love their dedication to serving healthy options, local and organic foods and beverages and homemade baked goods and even raw vegan goodies from time to time. My only complaint is that every now and again one of their stoned college student employees makes my chai latte wayyy too spicy by putting lots of that concentrated chai stuff in it and not enough milk and this has happened multiple times. This is by far my favorite coffee shop in lil' ol' Arcata. The employees are always so kind and have incredible taste in music, so I never have to worry about arranging music in my headphones. If you're anything like me and look for productive atmospheres that are the right amount of busy; this is the place to be. My favorite drinks consist of the Humboldt Fog if you're looking for something light and the cosmic chai for something a little milkier.
