This place was really fun but the parking isn't great. Drinks were pretty pricey as well. (I mean $3 for hot tea) There was only one bathroom. It was like, "Um. Hey there are a ton of people here. They're drinking coffee. They're doing their homework. Come on? We have to pee." - Constantly a line. I know these kids won't always be there but (wow) there were some of the most obnoxious children there tonight at the open Mic night. They wouldn't let people through the hall. They were running around screaming and going wild. I don't know what the staff could have done but I wish they would have intervened some how. Could have been better. Cups are cool. I love the space inside and the quiet, friendly atmosphere. The drinks are great, the food is great. The guy who makes the food is so kind and good at his job. I want to strongly suggest to the business to get the flies under control, they're everywhere. Maybe some sticky fly strips or other traps. Also I don't think the bathroom has a fan, that'd be nice to have. read more

After moving to Arcata I was excited about this coffee shop until they charged me double what I am used to paying for cold brew coffee. I kept going in but the workers were not very friendly and then they started charging me different amounts to refill my own cup. Best espresso in Arcata, hands down (well, besides that new coffee cart by Hollie Yashi, very high quality). Drinks are some of the best I have had, the dank side of the moon is perfect, not too sweet, but very satisfying. I have never minded the service, always thought it was fine, sometimes particularly unique, makes me feel like the baristas are comfortable there, and not like there is some boss demon breathing down their backs, making them interact with people according to a script (I have had barista jobs like that before) read more

Amazing Coffee. Great place to sit and talk, think, relax. Lots of room for coffee and studying (needs to be, it's close to Humboldt campus. I think students had left for the summer, so plenty of available seating). So inviting, hard to decide whether to sit inside or out. The service was good, personal, funny. I had a wet cappuccino. It was perfect: Fresh roasted, clean, sweet and bright (and the barista said it was organic), best so far on our whole driving vacation. I love this coffee shop. The atmosphere is always warm when I go in. I like it much better under the new ownership personally. I think the owners definitely have the community in mind with its selection of locally roasted coffee and local grub. I would have to agree with other reviews in that the service is not rushed, but I personally like it that way when I go to sit down at a coffee shop. If you are looking to get in and get out in 5 minutes with your latte, this may not be the place for you. This is because the baristas put a lot of time and care into the drinks they make. I have not been in there in the morning, so service may be a bit faster then. When I get up to the counter, I am always treated respectfully. Very sweet little hippie hipster coffee house. Wonderful coffee drinks and yummy breakfast sandwiches, burritos, and wraps. Comfortable place to eat outside. It can get a little noisy in there, since there is an organ you can play in the corner, but an overall good place to get coffee or do some work. read more

I've been to this place about five times since moving up here a couple years ago. Never have I had a decent experience. Every single one has ranged from sub par to atrocious. My first experience was trying to order a special that was advertised at the front counter. After the three baristas had finished discussing this order over the course of five or more minutes, they returned to let me know that no one in the cafe knew how to make the special, nor did they have a book/guide to reference in order to figure it out. I chocked it up to new staff, and went on my way. My next experience involved me ordering three relatively simple drinks, receiving two of them, waiting for ten to fifteen minutes, going up to the counter and asking about the third, and being told that there must have been some miscommunication and that my drink had not been made. I've worked in food service; I know mistakes happens. No problem. I waited and eventually received my final drink. After going to Northtown Coffee today, I will never go there again. I watched as two workers casually talked to each other by the dish station while I waited for my order to be taken with no other people in line. Eventually another worker that was making drinks came up to the counter to take my order. She did not look me in the eye at any point, seemed to be rushing me along, and did not even give a simple thank you when I tipped over 50% of the order total, even though I watched her glare at the tip jar as I dropped a five in, I have never met a more pretentious group of servers at a mediocre cafe. I discourage anyone from going here, unless you plan on receiving an average drink, and the poorest service. Any of the chains around the area will give you the same quality coffee without making you feel unwelcome. Edit: Forgot to add that every baked item I've ordered has been overcooked and inedible. The espresso chai muffin I ordered today seemed impossibly dry considering the humidity in Arcata. read more

This place is a big improvement on what was in this space before. Very Arcata. Rainbow colors, gluten-free desserts (really good, actually!), hormone-free milk, etc. It's about time Arcata had an Arcata kind of coffee shop. They even have coconut milk as a latte option. And it's a block from my favorite noodle place (Japhy's) and video store (La Dolce Video). Good times. read more
