It looks like most of these reviews are for the previous restaurant. We had a very nice experience at Nola Scala tonight and will definitely be back. Enjoyed the craft cocktails. The shrimp scampi was great with large portions and fresh, house-made pasta. I asked for a white wine to pair with the pasta and the pairing was excellent. Calamari was good too. Everything was fresh with large portions and prices were very reasonably. It was a Saturday night so it did get busy for such a small restaurant. If you are impatient, get there early. The Sunday brunch menu looks outstanding and I can't wait to try it. read more

Thursday night birthday dinner for me. Reservations through OpenTable. This is a small, quaint Italian restaurant located downtown Taylor Texas. The atmosphere is intimate and I quite enjoyed the ambiance. Although not busy at all, my first impression was positive. My wife and I were seated at a table adjacent to the street window. Since it was my birthday I wanted to splurge for a bottle of wine and ordered a bottle only to be informed they were out of stock. I looked again while the waiter recommended several bottles in the $70-$80 per bottle price range. I switched my order to a bottle of Querceto ($39), a French made red table wine. Absolutely delicious. What a great wine (in my humble opinion). Next it was time for an appetizer and I wanted to try the Prosciutto wrapped Figs. The waiter then informed me they were out of figs. So, needless to say we are not being impressed with two out of two items so far not in stock. I then settled on the Goat Cheese Filled Ravioli ($16). The presentation was good with four pieces topped with an in house marinara. We each tried the ravioli only to be disappointed in the flavor profile. There was very little goat cheese and the ravioli itself was like day old bread: hard, chewy, and just not very good. I will say the in house marinara almost made up for it by being flavorful and plentiful. But no, I expected a much better prepared ravioli. Not good. The restaurant is trying to change up the menu and offer different entrée selections on a rotating basis. My wife had the beef tips ($28) in a yogurt based sauce on top of yellow rice with asparagus. The dish was presented cold. The rice was severely overcooked. The yogurt sauce lacked any discernable flavor profile and the asparagus was unremarkable. This being the signature dish of the evening, it was a real disappointment and entirely forgettable. The highlight of the evening was my dish. I had the Italian sausage with homemade pasta in an in house marinara. The sausage could have been broken into slightly smaller pieces and there was not much pasta but the marinara was spot on. The dish was presented hot and had an excellent flavor profile. The portion was ideal and I found myself thinking this should be the signature dish. We spent $131 with tax and tip. Service was good and not intrusive. The server was knowledgeable and thoughtful. Since we started the service with two "out of stock" acknowledgements and the appetizer was quite frankly bad plus the beef tips were much less than expectations, I can only give 2 stars. Having said that, I would try this establishment once more. I fully support small businesses especially in a small town. I want them to succeed but for over $100 I also expect a better meal. read more

This is *such* an adorable looking trattoria, and I wanted so much to love it for an out of the way date night. Unfortunately, it's another example of a place where the food quality doesn't really match the service or the ambiance -- and doesn't merit the prices being charged. They were out of some of the selections we ordered, so we tried other items, and some of it just wasn't good (like the mufaletta cheesecake -- that recipe should not have passed through R&D). You can tell a lot about an Italian restaurant just by their sauce, and it just didn't hit the right notes for me. read more

I went ahead and got the Mediterranean pasta for my entree The Bear Monday is a delicious white fish I got the pasta with the marinara sauce It was really good. The service was excellent as usual. We have been wanting to try this out for a while. Unfortunately, we were severely underwhelmed. My gnocchi was ok, the risotto was just chicken with rice, not very flavorful, and their version of tiramisu was dry and not very flavorful. Better service could have also helped, we were the only customers and we felt like we were bothering the staff by being there. I don't ever want to give a bad review, particularly to a local establishment- especially in a town of chicken strips and hamburgers. However, the food and service were just not on par. I hope others continue to have great experiences here and if we hear more great things, we will give another chance and an edited review. read more

My husband and I dined here for the first time celebrating our wedding anniversary. The food was excellent! I got the shrimp piccata. The polenta was the creamiest I've ever had and the flavor of the shrimp was so good. The bread and dipping oil that were brought to the table was warm and soft. My husband got the spaghetti and meatballs. Both portions were enough that we took some home. We will come back for another special occasion. I had great expectations. Their current menu consists only of appetizers and pizza. No pasta. This is an Italian restaurant. Apparently, they had changed the menu a short while ago. Why? The server didn't know if they had unsweet tea. We ordered their mushroom pizza. It came about forty minutes later, and the place wasn't busy. The pizza didn't have red sauce on it. Now, I realize that some pizzas are made with white sauce. However, the menu specifically said red sauce. The chef came out and apologized and comped the meal. That was nice, but it did nothing to change my mind about this place. If you have an opportunity to go, don't. Find someplace that actually makes what you order and can serve it in a timely manner. A hidden gem in Taylor! I can't believe they didn't have a Yelp page yet. We found them quite by accident while having a beer at Texas Beer Company next door. We searched for WiFi and La Scala showed up so we Googled them. Turns out they're right next door. They specialize in homemade pasta and pizzas with a nice wine selection. Arrive early or call to make a reservation as the dining room is small and intimate. This is a real benefit actually, as it allows more personalized service and the limited menu allows the kitchen to pay attention to the details. We were greeted and welcomed as soon as we entered. A plate of olive oil, herbs, and balsamic with bread bites were brought out along with a dish of olives, while we decided what to order. I chose the 4 cheese ravioli and my husband had the porcini risotto with grilled chicken. Both were cooked to perfection and full of flavor. Our server Kevin was attentive without being intrusive. We look forward to returning and trying other items on the menu. read more

I will say that the service was very good. That's the most positive thing that I can say. The meal started with an order of Arancini. I would love to review this but it was not delivered until we mentioned that we had not received it. It was brought out 5 minutes after our entrees. Needless to say, it was sent back b/c an appetizer is, well, you know. We ordered the Tortellini w/seasonal vegetables. There were no seasonal vegetables with the dish. The pasta was rubber and flavorless. Generally, this was a terrible dish. The other entree ordered was the Herb Roasted Chicken Breast that was supposed to come with asparagus as the seasonal vegetable. Again, no seasonal vegetable to be found. The chicken was dry and tough (definitely over cooked). The risotto was decent, probably the only truly edible thing that we were served prior to dessert. For dessert we had the Tiramisu. It was fine. I did enjoy the touch of toffee accents. Took what was an average tiramisu and made it okay. When we informed our server of the sub-par food, he simply stated that he would inform the chef. That was all. I was truly disappointed in this experience as we were really hoping to enjoy the meal and make this a new stop in town. I would not recommend this to anyone and don't expect my shadow to be on the doorway any time soon. read more

If you are looking for a hole in the wall place with very personalized service and thought out menu, this is your spot. The menu items consist of very fresh local ingredients, the executive chef was very personable and experienced with an expert knowledge of the food. The servers were very attentive to your needs. I have very little criticism but the menu's were paper and had a little water stains, the crustiness were a little cold when they came out but were still delicious. Terrible food, Terrible Service, small portions, overpriced. We went there last Sat night. We were really looking forward to a great meal. What a disappointment. We were starving because had skipped lunch anticipating a nice early dinner. The tiny bread bites were flavorless and served with the smallest amount of oil and vinegar I have ever seen. We ordered an appetizer because we were so hungry. It never came...our waiter never checked on us. The food finally arrived after 25 min. Tortellini was truly the WORST I have ever tasted. Chewy ,hard and the size of a $5 hh appetizer. The herbed chicken dinner was also an undersized portion and overcooked, dry and flavorless. When the curly haired waiter with the accent finally came back and asked how our food was. We told him the truth.... that it was awful. He said he was sorry and made absolutely NO adjustment to our bill!!!!!!!! So, we ended up paying about $70 for 2 gross meals and 1 glass of wine. Hot tip to the waiter... when someone tells you that they are very unhappy with their meal, you go to management and get the bill adjusted. We are super nice people and tipped you well anyway but seriously... Not cool of you. Will tell everyone to skip LaScala. read more

La Scala tries to be a quality Italian restaurant but sadly comes across as insubstantial and pretentious. Was asked upon arrival to a dining room with a single table in use if we had reservation, "no" resulted in an odd reaction like we should have, again though it was an empty restaurant. The discussion about the wine resulted in the server asking what type of wine we preferred. Odd since it depends largely on the accompanying meal, as if trying to establish some kind of wine moral ascendancy in Taylor of all things. The rolls offered as the bread was not the type of Italian staple one might hope for or expect. The dipping oil was good. The entrees were mediocre at best, in particular my ravioli was adequate but was sauced with an inadequate tomato sauce the seemed to have a broken up meatball as its base. My wife liked both her Alfredo and especially the pesto on the plate. all told the experience was on the expensive side and sadly mostly mediocre. I was really hoping we finally got a decent restaurant in Taylor, but it was very disappointing. The menu is very limited, and what was on the menu was unavailable. We ordered arancini and the zucchini app. Fryer was down, and they were waiting on a part, so those apps were unavailable. We ordered meatballs. They were dry with very little sauce and a few sprinkles of parmesan on top. Salad, we ordered the farmer's salad that was supposed to come with caramelized shallots and cannellini beans, and when the salad got to us, it had neither. The waitress told us that they were out. Any local store carries canned beans. Finally, we ordered the pork milanese. I have to Arancinisay the pork was pretty good. The sauce was very good, but the mashed potatoes were cold, and the vegetables were cooked to death. The vegetables were also cold. Service was good.
