I enjoyed a late lunch with friends at Plowman's Kitchen on a recent Wednesday. We had a great experience. This family-owned restaurant is located in the former band hall of Taylor Jr High School, built in the 1950s. The band theme's presence throughout the restaurant is a nice touch, and not at all kitschy. There are breakfast, lunch, and dinner sections on the menu, but it seems like all are available at any one time. Pricing is reasonable. There is also a dessert case with a tempting selection of homemade pies. We were seated immediately on arrival, and service was excellent from start to finish. We ordered lunch and dinner selections. Items in the lunch section of the menu come with one side, anything from fries to fried okra, mashed potatoes to fruit. Dinner selections include 2 sides. There are also daily specials every day. They were out of the Wednesday special, lasagna, by the time we got there. We all enjoyed the food. I had shrimp tacos and a side of seasoned fries. They were nicely presented and tasted great. The dressing, made with Sriracha, was not spicy. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. After lunch, my friends shared a piece of homemade pie they said was really good. They are regular patrons of Plowman's, but this was my first visit. The menu has a great choice of items I'd love to try in the future. This means I'll be back for sure! read more

TLDR: Restaurant in an old high school band hall that delivers on nostalgic vibes but falls short on food. The fried green tomatoes are great here but for me, almost everything else was a disappointment. Not as kid-friendly as you'd expect. It pains me to leave such a low rating (and I rarely do) but this was one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I've had in a while. And it didn't have to be that way so hopefully my review can grab someone's attention. This place has so much potential because it's in such a cool location -- the band hall of an old high school (fun decor and cool nostalgic vibes). I had really high hopes for this restaurant but it let me down. Here's what went wrong. THE FOOD: First and foremost, the food was disappointing... except for their vegetable appetizers. The fried green tomatoes were fantastic. Nailed it in terms of texture and flavor. My husband and I were both surprised by how good they were. Their Brussels sprouts appetizer was really good as well. After that, it was all downhill. I had the Mom's Meatloaf with two sides: Cowboy Caviar and green beans. The meatloaf wasn't bad but it wasn't exactly a loaf -- it was like meatballs connected together? I didn't taste the bacon in the tomato sauce and the portion felt tiny -- same size as the sides. The sides were a real letdown. The green beans tasted like they came straight from a Jolly Green Giant can. The Cowboy Caviar (which I usually love) was so bland. It was like they just poured beans and corn and pepper and onion in and that's it. I didn't taste any seasoning. Cowboy Caviar needs to have that zing (many simple recipes use Italian salad dressing). Moving onto my husband's dish which was probably the worst part. His tomato soup tasted like marinara sauce but we were hoping the filet mignon would deliver. It was simply not good. It wasn't as tender as filet mignon needs to be -- it was chewy. It did seem to be cooked as requested (medium rare) but it didn't taste good and seemed flavorless -- almost as if the meat was poor quality. Now, I know that filet mignon is a much more mild tasting cut and less flavorful than a ribeye for instance, but still, something felt very off with this steak. Neither of us enjoyed it and that's a bummer (especially at that price point). KIDS: Usually restaurants like this one are more kid-friendly so I was a bit surprised. Our kids are 3.5YO and 2YO. They brought a booster for my youngest. It had no straps at all (which I'm not even complaining about because those straps are broken at literally every restaurant). We were in a booth so it worked okay mostly. What I'm unhappy about is the lack of coloring options and kids menus. We were not brought any crayons and coloring paper upon seating so we inquired. The waitress said she'd look and ended up coming back with crayons and some paper placemats to doodle on? I respect the ingenuity but I was confused. They have crayons on hand but they don't offer them to the kids? What's the deal with that? They didn't have a kids menu printed anywhere and the waitress just told us the offerings out loud. So is there an official kids menu or not? I'd like to be able to see the prices as well. Also a bit perplexing. We went ahead and ordered one grilled cheese for the kids to share and I'm glad because it was big but also not very good. The bread was too dense so it was more of a bread sandwich. My kids weren't that into it. Almost forgot -- the fries that came with the grilled cheese were actually very good (got to give credit where it's due). TIME: Our food took forever. It wasn't a fun wait -- the kids were getting super restless. The waitress stopped by a couple times to tell us that "our food is just around the corner." This medium sized restaurant has just about everything you'd want served all day long. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner? They serve it all day long. It's a cute nostalgic space with old-timey instruments displayed in the corners and has a really unique feel. The wait staff is friendly and funny and very knowledgeable about the menu. Personally, I've had the big thick burger and the pulled pork sandwich. Both are delicious. Others have had the chicken fried steak, the lasagna, and everyone I've gone there with loved it. Great comfort food and delicious pie for dessert. Try it, you'll like it! read more

Cute little spot located on taylor highs old campus- specifically the old band hall. Great way to repurpose the old building! Food was pretty good. Full bar avaliable and if I recall breakfast lunch and dinner sold all day! I had french toast and cheese grits- tasted just like it does at home- as expected I guess but nothing that gave me the wow factor I was hoping for, cheese grits however were really good, Kinda thick but packed with flavor! Eggs were cooke just right and potatoes were good too however came out luke warm like they had sat for a bit before being sent out, the pancakes were kinda like the french toast as it tasted like something you make at home but still good! Lots of pies to choose from- I went with a slice of buttermilk to go! It was good but i'd try something different next time I come by! We were at right away around 11am on saturday. Our waitress was nice and everything was out quick! The bathroom however needs some work- definitely something that's been there for QUITE sometime with no fix ups- dirty floors and walls, leaking handle when you go to flush. The food here is great and the service truly wonderful. There is sometimes a wait, but it is well worth it. The New Orleans shrimp appetizer is a must! That Cajun gravy/sauce is heavenly, and the baguette is perfectly toasted. We've had an assortment of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items here and all of them were very satisfying. Bacon is thick cut and so very delicious, the assortment of breads we've had have all been scrumptious, fries are battered with that perfect crispiness, pancakes, super fluffy and delicious, you can't go wrong with their biscuits and gravy, and they're sure to have something for everyone since their entire menu is served all day. The cheesy grits were slightly bland and the seasonal vegetables were overly oily. But otherwise everything has hit the spot! read more

I had a wonderful meal at Plowman Kitchen in Taylor. I ordered the salmon croquettes, which were served with a delicious sauce. They reminded me of the salmon croquettes my grandmother used to make and brought back such warm memories. The food was excellent, and the restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere. I made a dumb rookie mistake and ordered shrimp and pasta from a Chicken Fried Steak place. I wasn't very hungry but I should've ordered the CFS. They have a pie assortment to beat all comers. The service is here is really great. !! To be continued : My grandson ordered chicken fried steak, mac & cheese and french fries chicken fried steak was huge and beautifully fried with cream gravy. He has a hefty appetite, but it was so large. He ended up leaving a small piece of it as he was just too full/ his french were OK and he ate all his mac & cheese one of his very favorite dishes. I decided on the meat salad with goat cheese and poppyseed dressing. It also had pecans sprinkled throughout. It was delicious. It was massive so next time I will order a half portion. I also ordered tortilla soup which came with five or six tortilla chips. It was quite good But very spicy. They also have a bakery and make a lot of pies and cakes. There was no way we could eat dessert, but we definitely stopped at the Bakery Case and ordered some Red Velvet Cake for the boys and a piece of Coconut Cream Pie for me. The restaurant has several unique features, including a bar along one side of the restaurant where you can get beer, wine, and cocktails. It had a massive chandelier that was vintage and quite beautiful in the center surrounded by other light fixtures. The tables and chairs and the booths also reminded me of vintage café style furnishings . The round tables and chairs were very unique in that barrel style. Bottom of the tables were a metal cut out design, making them very unique. Our server was absolutely wonderful. Very patient and helpful. Next time I'm in town I will definitely return.!!! read more

Great local diner serving what I would call "upscale" diner food. They always have a good selection of cakes and pies. The wait staff is usually local young folks and it's not bad service. The menu here is not lacking but sometimes I still find myself looking for something more. We do love the options for sides though, you want a side of bacon with your meatloaf, no problem, deviled eggs for a side, got you covered, how about some Texas caviar! My wife was a little disappointed they were out of salmon which was her first choice but the filet she ordered instead was really good - quality tender meat, could have used a bit more seasoning but we were impressed with the quality of the cut. I had the roasted beet salad as a side and it was fantastic! Highly recommend. I also had the pork tenderloin with a honey mustard sauce. The tenderloin was tender but maybe a tad dry from being slightly overcooked, overall I felt it was ok. We both got deviled eggs as a side, they were a little dry, not much seasoning going on but we do like the option of a deviled egg as a side so we were ok with it but it could be better. This is the best!! Plowman's Kitchen has repurposed the old Taylor High School - in particular, the band hall! There are decorations of a drum set as the chandelier when you enter the front door, a bass drum as a table, many instruments adorn the walls in addition to old photos of majorettes, stage band, and students from THS! So creative! The food!!!! The BEST biscuits and gravy ever! The biscuits must have been placed on the grill first which gave them a bit of a crunch on the outside and fluffy, yummy, inside. Came around 9:30am on a Sunday. Not too many folks eating, and therefore the wait staff was extremely accommodating and allowed us to sit outside with our dog! The food order was taken quickly (and again they were VERY accommodating to specific substitution requests!). We both got the standard breakfast (eggs, sausage/bacon, and a side). I upgraded to the biscuits and gravy. The food was filling but not overly heavy as can sometimes happen with diner food. Some of my fruit was in bad shape, but there was a large enough portion that I could pick around it! The tables outside were a bit dirty, but it was our choice to sit outside. When you first walk in you're met with some unique decor: lights made out of drums, clarinets repurposed as lamps, high school band photos along the walls, with shakos atop the waiting area. It was very niche and intriguing- something I've not seen in a restaurant before. Our wait time wasn't too long, we were seated and helped in a timely manner. They had a display case of desserts that were calling my name but breakfast was the plan. I orders the Brussels sprouts for the table appetizer with some waters to wash it down. They were topped with bell pepper and a balsamic glaze. Think the dish would have been better with tomatoes rather than bell peppers and maybe a bit more glaze but it was still pretty good. For the main course I was torn between a sandwich and eggs Benedict. Per the server's recommendation I ordered the eggs Benedict paired with homestyle breakfast potatoes. With my son accompanying me, I ordered him the kids pancake plate paired with homestyle breakfast potatoes, sausage, and scrambled eggs. Our breakfast orders are where this restaurant loses a few stars from me. When I first received my eggs Benedict the eggs were way overcooked- almost hard boiled. A traditional eggs Benedict has a poached egg that is runny in the middle- these eggs did not give, the runniest part of the egg was the hollandaise on top. I asked if they could be remade because they were very clearly made incorrectly. The waitress was very understanding and could see the issue with the quality. I did have to wait a while for a new plate but I still had some Brussel sprouts to snack on. When I received a fresh plate the eggs were properly poached and made for an enjoyable meal. The kid's pancake plate posed another egg issue but this time undercooked. I have a toddler with a huge appetite, he ate a few of the scrambled eggs and then refused them. Nearly half of the eggs were undercooked- egg whites still wiggling around making for an unsafe meal for my toddler. The sausage, pancake, and potatoes were all great. The sausage is some of the best breakfast sausage I've had but they definitely missed the mark with their eggs. With eggs being a huge staple in our breakfast experience I was very dissatisfied with the inconsistencies and lack of proper preparation. read more

Met my brother for dinner there, as it's roughly 1/2 way between Smithville and Georgetown, and not Austin... yet. The Shrimp and grits were amazing and a large portion. Oh, get the deviled eggs. My brother got the pork tenderloin. He said it was like a 5 star restaurant in taste and size. But, reasonably priced, so if you have a huge appetite, maybe get a larger size or share an appetizer. I love that it's in the old band room! Being a band geek in high school, I loved the ambience. It was pretty warm in there, so don't expect to escape the heat, though. I didn't mind it, but others would have. Also, they only have the specialty drinks listed online, so I would recommend adding their beer/wine selections as well. I've learned that I have an auditory processing issue, so when servers list out options and I'm alone, I can get a little lost. If my husband is there, he can tell them immediately. Just something to keep in mind. My brother and I agreed that is going to be our new spot when we get together for family dinners. Especially since they have a gluten free menu! My nephew has celiacs disease, so it really is the perfect place we've been looking for! read more

We stumbled upon this joint in Taylor, and what a treat!! They have turned the old school into businesses and apartments; they even kept the old lockers! What an excellent idea; way to go, Taylor!! Plowman's is in the old band hall. They paid homage with a light filter that was an old drum set and majorette hats on display. The waiter was so down to earth! It is so refreshing to have someone care and enjoy their work. He was funny and joked around with my kid, which made her smile, so win-win!! This is a scratch kitchen, and you can tell. They take pride in what they serve, and it shows!! My daughter ordered the Club Sandwich; it has three pieces of bread, so stretch your mouth out! She took the top piece off, and it was perfect for her. She ordered a side of Mac n cheese, which, to be honest, could have used something. It was delicious, but with everything else being SO good, I was expecting more. I ordered the Ham and Jam ham sandwich with jalapeño jelly!! It was so good!! I would warn you; the crust is hard, so watch the roof of your mouth. I will get it again but cut the hard crust off. We ordered 2 pieces of pie to-go, so I'll report back later. Stopped in here for some breakfast. This place is a hidden gem in Taylor. Greeted by super friendly servers and laid-back chilled vibe here made this a surprising visit. My family and I came to eat the other day and our server was Becky. We absolutely loved Becky and remembered her from the Texan Cafe. She has always been our favorite server and we were so pleasantly surprised to now have her at Plowman's because it is one of our favorite places to eat. Taylor, Texas has the run of the mill fast food chains, but why not try something different? Well, today I did just that Plowman's Kitchen caught my attention and I gave it a try. The restaurant is in the old school near downtown I was seated and noticed how cleverly decorated the place is. Really neat light fixtures caught my eyes! The menu is a little something for everyone I have no idea why I went with the strawberry salad, but dang glad I did! It was so good, I'll definitely do it again when I get a chance. Just because they have so many homemade pies and cakes, I had to try one. Lol Just as well stay with the strawberry theme! Give me the strawberry cheesecake! My family's been in the food business for over a century here in Taylor Texas. The people that own this restaurant have done a wonderful job with the remodel of the old band hall. This used to be the band hall in the old school and now part of Old Taylor High with a history that I couldn't begin to tell but the decor makes sense when you're here. Very much an old school diner feel with comfort food. They have daily specials that, from everything I've tried, is worth going in for. My favorites being the Cajun pasta and blueberry French toast. Portion sizes are decent and we typically take home a little togo box. The pies and various desserts are delicious. The lunch sandwiches come with one side and there's a good amount to choose from. Good portions and good pricing. Never been unhappy with their lunch menu so far. They also do a tea service from on certain days for $65. As far as service goes, we have never had an issue, there is one gentleman who seems grumpy up front, don't let that fool you, anyone who goes here likely know who I'm talking about, but he's hands down my favorite server. Very attentive, honest, quick, and I like his sense of humor. Now for the items I have tried and not a fan of, the sourdough pancakes, this can be chalked up to a personal taste possibly. The country gravy, on the 2 occasions we have tried it, was sweet. Made it difficult to eat. Needed a lot of pepper and salt. Meatloaf has been dry. Was not worth finishing the meal. The mashed potatoes with the meatloaf though were excellent I will add. Overall. I will continue to go here and keep trying new items. read more
