This used to be the band hall in the old school and now part of Old Taylor High with a history that I couldn't begin to tell but the decor makes sense when you're here. Very much an old school diner feel with comfort food. They have daily specials that, from everything I've tried, is worth going in for. My favorites being the Cajun pasta and blueberry French toast. Portion sizes are decent and we typically take home a little togo box. The pies and various desserts are delicious. The lunch sandwiches come with one side and there's a good amount to choose from. Good portions and good pricing. Never been unhappy with their lunch menu so far. They also do a tea service from on certain days for $65. As far as service goes, we have never had an issue, there is one gentleman who seems grumpy up front, don't let that fool you, anyone who goes here likely know who I'm talking about, but he's hands down my favorite server. Very attentive, honest, quick, and I like his sense of humor. Now for the items I have tried and not a fan of, the sourdough pancakes, this can be chalked up to a personal taste possibly. The country gravy, on the 2 occasions we have tried it, was sweet. Made it difficult to eat. Needed a lot of pepper and salt. Meatloaf has been dry. Was not worth finishing the meal. The mashed potatoes with the meatloaf though were excellent I will add. Overall. I will continue to go here and keep trying new items. read more

An absolute diamond of a restaurant. My wife had the biscuits and gravy, my son had the meatloaf and I had the cheesesteak. All of us enjoyed our meals. Excellent food, prices were well worth it. Cheaper than Whataburger! The service was good, no complaints. Drinks were refilled regularly and the hostess didn't rush us or walk off despite our indecisiveness with the menu. The location is inside an old high school. That really threw us for a loop at first because I didn't know I'd be driving into a residential area to find it. This is a hidden gem in Taylor and a must visit. The good is amazing, the people are even better. Feels like your visiting family. It's actually past of the old highschool in the band hall. They have musical instruments as decorations all over honoring the buildings original venue it's so cool. Oh and get the Snickers pie it's so dang good I can't even begin to explain just how good it is. They recommended I get it and do glad I did. This place is SO good! I was driving home from Austin and went through Taylor, TX to do some shopping at antique stores. I asked one of the stores where to eat and they recommended Plowman's - so glad they did! I ordered probably the most boring thing on the menu, the grilled Turkey sandwich with fries and it was the best flippin sandwhich I've ever put in my mouth! Seriously, I haven't stopped talking about it. The bread is fresh, the bacon had unbelievable flavor, not the cardboard you buy at the store, the secret sauce YUM! I also took a slice of the chocolate pie and Ali's dream pie home and they were also fabulous. I live two hours away and I'm already planning to drive my parents and husband back down there just to eat. RUN to the Plowman's if you are within 200 miles. read more

Then the bacon jalapeño dip were a toss up between which was better. I liked both.. probably leaning toward the dip. The enchiladas were good but nothing to write home about. Also no banana pudding today. I'd definitely like to try this place again but maybe not on a weekend.. I'm thinking I may have better luck of them not being out of things if I went on a weekday. Alas, I am not usually in taylor so it'll probably be a very long while until I go back. Next time I will be trying chicken fried chicken probably. Suggestions for them- maybe cut down so many options on the menu if running out of so many things. However they have breakfast all day. Oof. After reading such nice things here and elsewhere we made the long trip to Taylor, arriving at 6:30 for dinner. Here's what they were out of: Shrimp, so all shrimp dishes were out. Baked potatoes. Pimento cheese. Fried green tomatoes. Their daily special. And when I ordered enchiladas, it was apparently the last one of those for the night. Serious sourcing and inventory issues seem to plague this place. I mean, it's not even 7pm on a Saturday night, so dinner service is just beginning. It's too bad, it's indeed very cute inside. The hostess Kileigh was super nice. So how was the food? It's okay. I mean, good, but not memorable. Yum deviled egg, good bacon jalapeño dip. The chicken enchiladas, well how do I say this, I liked them more because they tasted like someone who made them at home instead of in a restaurant. (And I think that's kind of the point here.) Bonus star: Since they were out of two of the three appetizer sampler items, they let us construct around, which was really nice. read more

We tried Plowman's Kitchen today on the way home from church in Austin. The location and the story behind the restaurant was kinda cool, but our experience didn't live up to some of the others reviews here. I first heard about this from someone making a comment on Facebook about them having the best pies in Central Texas. We decided to have breakfast, I had a basic breakfast platter, and my husband had the biscuits and gravy, his usual. I subbed out the cottage fries for some grits on my platter, they were disappointing. Very dry and sticky, kinda like Thai sticky rice. I'm used to southern grits being buttery and creamy, you know, like you use a spoon, but not too much liquid. I asked for my eggs to be a soft scramble, they weren't, also dry. I asked for some fresh grits, and was told they were made this morning, it was about 11:30 when we were there. They offered to take the charge off our ticket and I told her that wasn't necessary. The bacon was excellent. My husbands biscuits and gravy was underwhelming as well, just gravy on biscuits, no sausage in the gravy. We were going to get a piece of pie to take home, but honestly, we took a look at the pie case, and they all looked like a pie I could make myself with a graham cracker crust, some instant pudding and some whipped cream. All in all, I'm hoping that breakfast just isn't their strong suit, and maybe we should have gone there for the lunch or dinner menu. read more

We are visiting Austin & l found a gem of an eatery in Taylor, Texas. The restaurant use to be the school Band Hall back in the day. They have photos from the 40's & 50's & shakos too. I would highly suggest everyone try the fried green tomatoes & Brussel sprouts appetizer if you're in town. It was SO delicious, the chili jam on the tomatoes... mmmm They gave a large portion of meatloaf & my BLT was tall and yummy! Took a day trip to Taylor for a bit of antique shopping and dining. And found this gem. It is housed in one of the old school building and they have really made a warm inviting place to dine. Our waiter John was a hoot and made the experience entertaining, Now to the food. Their menu has a wide range of options of what I would call elevated comfort foods. We both decided on the salmon croquettes and they did not disappoint. They were well cooked and seasoned with a dill caper sauce that was quite tasty. I had the cowboy caviar and Mac and cheese for my sides while my Mom selected mashed potatoes and seasonal fruit. This place was definitely a great find and the price point was great. John had a great personality and took great care of us. He made good recommendations. The food was very delicious! We decided on the chicken fried steak. Came here today looking for vegetarian options and saw the Veggie Sandwich on the gluten free menu online. We were looking forward to trying that. The server told us that was no longer offered, so we had to change our plan. So disappointed. As a vegetarian, eating out sometimes is a challenge as we have to plan eating out at certain places. It would be nice to have updated and accurate information posted on your website. We did love the fact this was an old school band hall, and enjoyed seeing the musical decor. read more

Every time we come here I'm happy with my experience! Plowman's is an adorable restaurant located in an old school building, the vibe is so unique and I love the decor. Service is friendly and I love that everything tastes so fresh! One of my favorite items to order is their beet salad with grilled chicken, I swear there must be some sort of magic sprinkled on those beets because I couldn't get enough!!! They were roasted perfectly and had this rich sweet and savory coating that had me begging for more. Cute spot in a transformed school. The people were very nice and my online order was done quickly. I give 3 stars because my Ham and Jam was supposed to have Brie cheese but it did not and the ham was barely grilled and looked gray. Also the tea tasted old. Mac and cheese was good, reminds me of McAlisters Mac and cheese but better. I don't live in the area so I'm disappointed I couldn't get the full flavor of the sandwich I ordered. read more

Had a tasty little lunch here while working on our Granger property and I'm glad Yelp led us here. The food was tasty, although my salmon was a bit overcooked. The service was good and the tea was refreshing on a 90 degree day. We will definitely be back to sample some of those baked goods! The food is traditional Americana. We had meatloaf, chicken fried steak, Mac and cheese, okra, and mashed potatoes, all hot and cooked. John (server) was the best part at least for this old soldier, a bit rough around the edges but with a huge heart for service. Before I forget the pie was also spot on not too over the top just right, and food portions were good. I've seen some of the other posts about food portions and I'm not sure what people are expecting. PS. I'm going back, I still need to try 2 other dishes. The food is delicious (: we don't come often because the menu is kind of limited, not a lot of what we usually eat but we go every blue moon for a special occasions and/or if we want something specific that they serve. Over the past year the food has come cold or under cooked. The order is not correct when it comes to the table. I can understand once in a while but it seems to be getting worse. I would advise that the owners get more involved with the kitchen and training of staff. If was so much better two years ago. Such a cute restaurant. Went with co workers. They looked understaffed initially but once you were seated our waitress seemed consistent. I had a tuna melt, Mac and cheese and deviled eggs. Eggs had a little to much garlic on them BUT so happy to see this on the menu. Mac and cheese was bomb. Tuna melt was good but I mean when can you go wrong with tuna. My coworkers got chicken and meatloaf. Neither of them thought their foods were that great. I know I would for sure go back to give them another try. read more

After driving to Taylor and working up an appetite, I used yelp to find an amazing restaurant. Plowman's came up and I was excited to try it. Walking in, I was impressed by the decor. They've got old drums as decorations for the lights and by the seating. The menu is small, but it allows you to make fast decisions. The first day I went, I tried the chicken sandwich with fries. It wasn't outrageously special, but it did the job. The fries were good and the service was fair. The next day, I had a competition and came here again afterwards. I ended up getting the breakfast burrito. I loved that you can get anything on the menu at any time! The breakfast burrito was a bit on the smaller side, but it was perfectly crafted! I would definitely come back to try more on the menu. The next thing on my list is the pasta!!! read more

Love how they've repurposed this part of the old school building and the band decor ambience. We had salmon croquettes, deviled eggs, Mac and cheese, cfs, mashed potatoes, eggs Benedict. Food was wonderful and the only complaint was cfs was a little tough. Jalapeno gravy was delicious; we could've used more of that, same with the hollandaise... wonderful; wished for another spoonful of it. Instead of English muffins, they use homemade biscuits! Love that. Mashed potatoes homemade too and great. The interesting part of the menu are the sides they offer. In addition to the usual ones, we like that they offer deviled eggs, bacon, sausage, cowboy caviar. We shared a slice of allies dream pie, very rich. I really wanted to like this more than I did based on the other reviews. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, and maybe it was just my meal. We got seated after a short wait and this was pleasant considering we were afraid of a crowd. Service was cheerful, pleasant and helpful. Very good menu selections made choosing difficult. Wife and friend got the Benedict and those were good. Other friend went with the Salmon patties and these were very good and hot. Important for those. I went with the classic CFS to give their offering a go. The steak was on the tough side and grisly. The okra was not great either. So, maybe it was just mine. Now dessert saved the day. Great selection. Two had German chocolate cake, one had Chess pie and I got the Lemon Blueberry pie. All solid but we all agreed the lemon blueberry was fantastic. In my top three pies ever! Worth stopping again and trying something else. If you go get that pie! read more
