After driving to Taylor and working up an appetite, I used yelp to find an amazing restaurant. Plowman's came up and I was excited to try it. Walking in, I was impressed by the decor. They've got old drums as decorations for the lights and by the seating. The menu is small, but it allows you to make fast decisions. The first day I went, I tried the chicken sandwich with fries. It wasn't outrageously special, but it did the job. The fries were good and the service was fair. The next day, I had a competition and came here again afterwards. I ended up getting the breakfast burrito. I loved that you can get anything on the menu at any time! The breakfast burrito was a bit on the smaller side, but it was perfectly crafted! We just left Plowman's Kitchen after visiting the Loose Screw in Taylor. These two places are located in the old elementary and high schools in Taylor, TX. This is a must see for various reasons. The Plowman's food is excellent and service top notch. The Loose Screw is across the schoolyard and has an excellent selection on tap along with various eclectic stores, cafes, and art studios located in the various "classrooms". Not to mention Mother's Basement Arcade also located there. What a fun visit and excellent repurpose of the old school buildings. Lots of events and food trucks too. Something for everyone. This diner has so much character! Located inside the Old Taylor High School and family owned. Even though we have only been in the area for a few years we felt welcomed and like we have been part of the Taylor area community for years by the staff. Coming from a smaller, tight knit community in WI this place was nostalgic to us of our favorite hometown diners. There are beautiful instruments used as lighting and decor and plenty of historical items and information lining the walls. We did not make a reservation, but called and asked for availability and we had a difficult time reaching someone on the phone. We did eventually get someone to pickup and they let us know we would have to wait a bit for a table but to come on by. We were checked in on and reassured we were not forgotten while waiting and there is plenty of cool decor to checkout while waiting. For a weekend early afternoon breakfast and a place that seemed to also be suffering from employee shortages that's amazing that we only had to wait about 15/20 minutes. Very attentive and friendly servers, came by multiple times to check in and always made sure we had enough coffee. We received our food pretty quickly as well and it was presented beautifully. We decided to check out the enormous Breakfast Board. For 2 people we had some leftovers we were able to take home. The food was good, nothing too different or mind blowing in flavor but a solid good breakfast that fills you up. The fruit provided was also nice and fresh and sweet. The servers and busboys were quick to clean up tables when customers left to ensure it was ready and perfect for the next guests. Very family friendly location and tables are spread out enough to accommodate strollers even. The parking lot is a bit small, but it is very easy to find close street parking for free as well. Overall the cute atmosphere and the amazing service will definitely bring us back to try out more items to hopefully find some more flavor in the dishes and maybe sit outside on the patio next time. I came to Taylor for a little day trip and came here for breakfast since it was highest rated in town. Now that I've been, I have no idea why. It starts with a lengthy wait and after you are sat, you wait some more. Next thing was the server telling us the laundry list of things they were out of. Then the food took forever to come out and when it finally did we were starving so we ate it but the pancake was dry and overcooked, the potatoes were undercooked and the biscuits and gravy was so bland. Definitely was not worth the wait and I'm so annoyed I wasted a meal on this place. They also seem very understaffed and the server was not very attentive or friendly. read more

Plowman's has become the "go to" spot on my visits to Taylor. The service and food has been terrific. Each time I get to visit, the hostess/waitress always has a smile on their faces and enjoy where they work. The meatloaf and seasonable vegetables hit the spot every time. Back in the area, so after reading the yelp reviews, 3 of us decided on this spot for dinner. And can I tell you it did not disappoint! The ambiance in this old School house is charming and unique. 3 meals were: 1st- Meatloaf with mashed potatoes and fried okra. portion was large, taste was very good and the okra was fried to perfection. 2nd- Honey Dijon pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and veggie. Super tender, juicy and flavorful. 3rd- Shrimp pasta with garlic bread. The Alfredo sauce was very flavorful with lots of parmigiana. Sauce could have been a bit thinner but who wants sauce dripping down their chin, in a restaurant anyway. The shrimp were spiced and cooked perfectly. Everything was Delicious! Lastly- 2 deserts: Better than... (sex) Pie, is amazing, very sweet but wonderful with coffee the next day. And cheesecake, very creamy, not dense, not overly sweet. Our new must stop restaurant on our frequent trips through Taylor, Texas. The Plowman's Kitchen is a very attractive restaurant built in the old high school and the dining room is in what appears to be the old cafeteria. It is decorated with memorabilia from old Texas restaurant institutions like Earl Abel's (San Antonio) the Night Hawk (Austin) and others. The food is amazing. On my most recent visit, I told the waiter that Mom's Meatloaf is actually better than Mom's (forgive me Mom!). Portions are generous and the veggies and fruit were surprisingly fabulous! We were a party of 5. Started off with a carafe of mimosas. It was enough for all of us to 1.5 each. We started off with the basket of pastries. They were warm when they arrived and the largest one with icing was my favorite. It was flaky but all were delish. My guests were fans of the scones. One friend talked about the eggs Benedict for days and was happy with her choice. Someone else got the French toast, another person got the eggs your way. Typical traditional breakfast, my last guest got that massive breakfast platter. He did try to order 2 other items before that and they were already sold out before 11:30a (the salmon and chicken pot pie). I did feel the French toast tasted better than the pancake but that's just personal preference. I also loved the sausage over the bacon. I ate the chicken fried chicken with mashed potato's and Mac n cheese. All tasty. I went with the lavender drink as my 2nd cocktail and it was so good. Highly recommend and save room for pie. I want to love this place I really do.. it's a cute atmosphere and family friendly. But I kid you not this is the 4th time out of 5 in 3 months that they are out of a menu item. I specifically keep trying because I love their BBQ Shrimp appetizer. But I assure you this is the last time I will waste my time coming here. I was told that they purposely run out of the sauce on Sunday because they close early.. ok so why at 1pm on Monday ( 5 hours after opening) are you still out of it. And mind you it's been different days of the week each time. The other menu items are mediocre at best and very inconsistent but they have a great thing going with that BBQ shrimp recipe. I come for that and my kids enjoy the chicken tenders (they're kids) easy to please. And my oldest got the club sandwich, it was dry and the bread was over toasted. I got the burger medium rare (so pink) added bacon and a fried egg. The burger was well done and the egg was fried hard so it was like eating a hard boiled egg yolk. Call ahead if you want bbq shrimp they are probably out. I've ran kitchens before and to purposely run out of an item and not prep it the next day is absolutely unacceptable practices. They clearly need some help in the kitchen with consistency and quality. I know times are tough but that's what Standard Operating Procedures are for. read more

My experience here was actually pretty bad. We went on a hot summer afternoon for late lunch. We were sat near completely open glass windows, away from any fans, and there was no circulation. We were sweating, fanning, and so uncomfortable with the heat. It was like a standstill heat, and I even was using the condensation on my drink to cool off. This completely ruined the experience for me and we all agreed that we would not be back until it is cold outside. With that being said, our waiter was funny, prices were fair, and the food was actually really good. On food alone this is a 4 star restaurant! We are excited to come back but never in this heat if they don't offer air conditioning, a fan, ventilation, or close their blinds in the heat of the summer. read more

What can I say about Plowman's Kitchen? I've been coming here religiously ever since their doors opened. I guess I can say I'm a regular (lol) It is hands down Taylor's best kept secret! Although it's not a secret anymore lol they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, have a bar and bakery. Their food is absolutely amazing. Their pies and pastries, scrumptious! Their drinks? Omg you have to try their mimosa flights! That's my favorite part! Their outdoor patio/seating area is perfect. The staff is so friendly. The place is very clean and open. It has a very vintage flair to it. The decor and lighting is so cool! This place is a must when visiting Taylor. A few of my favorites, the breakfast board and pastry basket, the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and steak veggies, Eggs Benedict, Ham and Jam and all their pies! If and when you ever go to Taylor, TX this place is a must place to stop, and see, and eat. Plowman's Kitchen is actually in the gymnasium and band hall of the old Taylor High School. Upon entering we were meet by John who is the greatest greeter in the world. He made us feel at home in his home. There were 8 of us and he went right to work setting up a perfect place for us but also made sure we checked out the decor all over the place. Right above us as we entered were three beautiful drums turned into a chandelier, hanging is another place a clarinet into a lamp. All over the place were instruments made into art pieces. Then he showed us the pies, OMG should have started the meal there. John was also the bar tender making cordial floaters, top shelf gin cocktails, and of course beer. Appetizers..must have fried green tomatoes and the pimento cheese like no other. Our orders were all different from the Filet Mignon, C F Steak, Salmon Croquettes, the Cuban, the Italian BLT, Turkey Club, all were great, fantastic, delicious, and a couple of plates have almost licked clean. There were a couple of duplicates. John cracked up teasing all of us that we ate like good children. He was great, checking if we needed anything........and you know what he was fantastic not only to us but to all who were in the restaurant. This place just doesn't feel right. First of all, nobody (including the staff) is wearing a mask. There are zero COVID safety protocols in place, that I could see. The server was nice, but did not visit our table more than once. We waited a weird amount of time for our check. The place seemed clean, other than the mass amount of flies. The food was very bland and unremarkable. No flavor whatsoever. We asked for a side of bacon, but for some reason they put it in the breakfast taco? I didn't notice an excess of bacon, but we paid for it anyway. I wish we would have eaten at home. We will not be back. read more

this is a tough review for me to write. Some folks in our party of 6 had a positive experience and a good meal, but 3 of us, not so much. First, they were very busy. We had to wait about 15 or 20 to be seated. My observation told me that they had more tables than they had wait staff. our server was very young, so training is a gap That really needs to be addressed by management. Most young folks have never paid for a sit down meal and don't really understand the formula or requirements for good meal service. Our food came pretty quickly, but 3 plates were missing things that the waiter (not the kitchen) usually adds to the plate. We had French toast, fries, and toast, as parts of our order, but there was no butter, syrup or jelly on the corresponding plates. We waited and waited for the condiments while our meals turned cold. When my butter finally arrived, it was liquid (not solid) In a small plastic cup! Obviously, it had melted somewhere earlier in the process. My toast was cold and stale, so basically inedible. we also asked for napkins that never came. If we had a more experienced or better trained waiter or waitress, I am sure that our dining experience would have been much better. Potentially 4 stars instead of 3. The other 3 meals were pretty decent. Another complaint is there was no childrens menu during brunch. Not sure why, but we drove from Bastrop specifically to eat at Plowman's (for the first time) and there was nothing stating no childrens menu on Sunday on their website. Not ok when you have hungry kids who are picky eaters. They have a pretty serious issue with flies! This needs to be addressed. read more

Pork was super thin and so over cooked flavor was very good. they recooked it and it was better but still a bit tough, but again good flavor. Deserts are delicious! I come back for that alone. We came here for breakfast and the waiter named Sean told us the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner menu all day, so we had dinner for breakfast! We had a filet mignon which comes with 2 sides and it was perfectly cooked, juicy and yummy. We also had a salmon mignon and it was also tasty. The indoor seating was very nice! They also had pastries but we didn't try but they look good! Would definitely recommend it and go back! read more
