Shiso sorbet
Jon O.

Great but pricey Japanese dinner in the Madison Park neighborhood of Seattle! Our favorites were the black cod (one of the best in Seattle) and the huge portion of hamachi kama broiled and seasoned to perfection. Chirashi had a good variety of fish but the flavors were a bit muted and for $42 I expected more special ingredients like tobiko or ikura or amaebi, or even just more than one slice of hamachi. Miso soup was very good, I enjoyed the strong bonito flavor. The shiso sorbet was refreshing if you like that flavor, and the matcha ice cream could have been more bitter. Ambiance is great and service is fantastic, I really appreciate them taking care of our large group with professionalism and pro-activeness. Parking lot is tiny so be prepared to park on the streets.

For the price point of this place, I expected something special but the sushi here was just... fine. Everything was very fresh, but I wish there was more flair. We came for Valentine's Day and each table had a pink, red, or white Glassybaby which I thought was very cute. Our server was very nice and the food came out very quickly despite the holiday. We got the chirashi, combination sushi, toro nigiri, salmon nigiri, tuna nigiri, and 3 rolls. The rolls only came with 4 pieces, which is really like half a roll in my opinion, and the nigiri felt dense like there was a lot of rice compared to the fish ratio. The chirashi and combination sushi came with miso soup which was nice. The total came out to around $200 with tip, which I thought was a little pricey for the amount of food. Again, everything was very fresh but nothing really stood out.

I've been a long time fan of Nishino! Located near the Arboretum in Madison Valley, and unless you're specifically looking for it, you may just miss this gem of a Sushi restaurant. The first few times I came through in the '90s, I had their Chawanmushi, and I'm so glad they kept it on the menu, it is a staple order for me every time! Although Sushi is what most people come here for, I actually love their other dishes, like the Miso Black Cod. I usually take a look at their specials because they feature items that are in season and fresh. Not too long ago Nishino featured a 4-course meal for $40 on select weekdays. It included a soup, appetizer, entree and dessert! A total bargain and it brought us back! Just follow their IG page for specials like this!

Pretty loud and service can be slow when the place is packed and the day that I went, there was no air conditioning. They just had oscillating fans running. I didn't see any Japanese people other than the chefs working so that could explain the standards. The food was perfect and filling without being too much although the prices are very high for what you can get in different part of town overall very good for quality Japanese food on this side of the hill.

Sushi was fantastic. Sashimi chefs choice was really good, but be prepared for sticker shock. Yellowtail hamachi was literally so good. Highly recommend. Tempura oysters were not great. The tempura was too light to make the dish balanced- the oysters kept falling apart with the fry. Ambiance is definitely higher end- a great special occasion area (~100/person with apps drinks and sushi) Service was great too.

A friend of ours recommended we try Nishino on our trip to Seattle and it was one of the best recommendations we've ever gotten! It's an unassuming somewhat hole in the wall restaurant, but the food was absolutely incredible. As soon as we arrived, we were seated promptly by smiling, friendly staff. The dining room was very clean, and decorated simply but beautifully. The ordering style is à la cart, where you actually right what quantity of which item you want on the menu. It was fun! To start off we got the shrimp dumplings, which were perfectly cooked and seasoned. We then got salmon tartare on crispy rice, which was literally probably the best thing my husband and I had on our entire trip in Seattle. It was so good! We then tried a few pieces of sushi (salmon and Hamachi) which were both delicious. We also had the black cod with miso, which had a perfectly buttery composition and flavored deliciously. We also had udon noodles with chicken, which war by far the best udon noodles I have ever had in my life. Lastly, we had the banana tempura for dessert, which is always a hit!

Shiso "sorbet"

What an outstanding meal! Delicate flavors, beautifully prepared, and the service was outstanding. We tried some things we had never had before, and they were delicious. Tempura parsley and sweet onions, so delicate, and tasty. Who would have thought? The miso glazed, black cod was delicious, as were the pickles that came with it: lotus root, and mushroom with ginger. We also would highly recommend the albacore tartare with taro chips. For dessert, we had the shiso sorbet. The flavor was delicious, although the texture was more like chunky shave ice, not as smooth as I would have expected for a sorbet. One more really nice thing about this restaurant space: it is not noisy. One can have a thoughtful conversation, and not hear other conversations nearby. And there is no mood music to interfere. Highly recommend.

Nishino is a solid sushi restaurant in Madison Park area, but nothing compelling to return to. The ambiance reminded me of an older cruise ship style - muted tones, white linen table cloths, basic nonthreatening appearance. Any restaurant could be here. They had a small white board with specials written on it that they brought table to table. Felt a bit weird. My friend and I were the first customers of the night and they sat us against the wall. Not a problem. I noticed the table density was tight - it wasn't possible for the waiter to turn around between our table and the table next to ours without stepping out and then stepping back in. I thought no biggie, I bet this place will not be full by the time we leave so no worries. The next party of two they sat at this closest table. Not to either table against the same wall as the table we were against - despite that they were at a much more comfortable distance away and the one never was occupied while we were there. Nope, they sat this party of two right beside us and I felt like we were part of their conversation. I learned more about these strangers than I think they'd be comfortable with. Now Nishino isn't a basic sushi restaurant. They marinate their fish. They are quite heavy handed with their vinegar. I didn't mind it, but it was certainly noticeable. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll along with a variety of nigiri. The nigiri was solid. The shrimp tempura roll was more cucumber bits and rice than it was shrimp. I don't need a wide roll - I am fine with a narrow roll that tastes like the primary item versus being drowned by the others. The multitude of cucumber slivers also didn't hold up. They'd fall out of the roll the instant the seaweed wrapper was broken. The waitstaff was delightful. Very polite, very prompt. They are the reason I'm giving this three stars versus two. It's a solid restaurant but in a city with no end to sushi restaurants I can't see a reason to return.

Shrimp dumplings. Delicious!

Finally had dinner here, year after moving to the area. I wish I had not waited so long. We are outside, and it was raining hard that night. We stayed dry in the cute tent they had set up, which was romantic. There was a space heater on our legs, and we kept our jackets on. We enjoyed sushi, miso and vegetable tempura. He had the spicy mushroom soup which was delicious and definitely worth ordering. The dungeness crab dish (crab and mushrooms baked in a spicy creamy sauce) was a dish we were divided on... he liked it, I did not. It was too creamy for my taste. The shrimp dumplings were been my favorite dish. Service was great! I look forward to eating here again!

Ask the Community - Nishino

Do we need reservations?

It's a good idea, and is required for the omakase.

How many courses is the omakase and how many pieces of nigiri are included in that?

They don't offer omakase anymore. Instead, it comes in the form of "chef's choice sashimi platter": you can tell them what you like or your budget, and the chef will choose and serve you the cuts of fish all at once.

Anyone know if it's air conditioned? A fairly new seattle problem.

You would be comfortable there, last time I checked...ac was working. That problem is everywhere atm.

Super great, totally the highlight of our food trip…read more So many dishes we didn't expect. Service: great, our lovely person was willing to have a conversation about how much food we ordered, as we were unsure about how much to get for a party of 5 and traveling--leftovers isn't a viable option. I will say, there are way too many nice folks clearing and not enough coverage for the tables. So order and then don't expect them to return for a minute, but not an issue, just an observation. Food: FANTASTIC! Nice free edamame to start! From soup to sushi, super great--the tempura is on point--no basic dishes here, only the very best. Seriously, I love salmon roe, and this was the best I've had, better than Kashiba (and that's saying a lot, if from the same provider, I'm just an idiot), wow!!! The fish liver was a little miss for me, but you don't see it a lot, and glad to try. Rolls, generous and perfect. Grilled fish--omg, Nobu has nothing on this, and at least half the price maybe (don't quote on that), and super nice size. We needed two orders of the seafood dumplings! All scallop and shrimp (as I recall) no filler. We'll be back from Portland just for these, money! Atmosphere: it's loud, and I mean loud, but it's the thing there, intentional and more of a "we didn't expect it" not a ding at all, people are having a great time and a vibrant place. I will say, if I came here again, we'd book the tatami room for a little separation as we are a larger and older group. Would recommend to anyone and super great prices!! Not to give too much away, but, 5 people stuffed on 5-Star food and maybe a little tipsy for around 50 bucks a person--in these times, yes!!!!

*Reservations are highly recommended*…read more The lobby and waiting area have one large and one short bench. After being called in, you walk down a short hallway and get seated. We chose the counter seats after waiting for 40 minutes in the lobby and was told it may be another 30 min to get a table. However, I strongly advise against them unless you're planning a quick lunch. The seats are extremely uncomfortable, and people constantly walk past you. Food we ordered: * Crispy rice sampler: A-OK. The tuna is chopped and smothered in spicy mayo and masago * Ahi tuna poke: Recommended! * Ora king salmon sashimi: Decent, kind of fishy though * Filet mignon plate: A-OK but not very filling * Ponyo roll: A-OK * Umi house roll: Would not recommend * Ginger chicken plate: Very salty and does not come with rice The ambiance here is moody and dark, with multiple seating options including a bar, sushi bar, main area, and semi-private floor seating. The food was decent, and the service was fine. The turnaround from ordering to receiving the food was relatively quick, taking about 10-15 minutes. Considering the quality of the food I experienced, their happy hour might be more worthwhile. However, at regular prices, I don't think it's a good deal.

The food was as amazing. Not a place I could afford to come to too frequently, but it's such a treat! Since my wife and I love sushi and were flying back home to LA the following morning, I immediately reserved a table for us at the restaurant for that same evening. Sushi Kashiba is known for its omakase, or chef's choice dinner. However, we went with the set tasting menu called "Peak" since we're not fans of surprises. The Peak option included 14 pieces of nigiri sushi, a cup of salmon roe garnished with wasabi, a fried shrimp head, 2 maki rolls, a light sashimi salad, and miso soup. Additionally, we ordered the tempura set which came with shrimp and assorted vegetables. We came here with high expectations, and this place did not disappoint. Every piece of sushi was a work of art-fresh and perfectly prepared. I've never had toro, tamago, and eel this good. And I've been to some highly regarded sushi restaurants in LA. I even enjoyed the shrimp head. It was crunchy and incredibly delicious. This isn't your typical neighborhood sushi spot. It's a high-end establishment that serves nothing but the best the world has to offer. For that privilege, it's going to cost you. The damage for our meal was over $450. And that was without any alcohol. However, it was totally worth it. I would most definitely come back here again if I were to ever return to the Emerald City.

I was around the corner (literally) at a cafe, learning about the history of Seattle's Japantown, when I decided to look up recommendations of restaurants in the district to eat at. Maneki came up, and right after I read about how difficult it is to eat there as a walk-in without a reservation, I looked at the time and realized they were about to open for the evening. So I thought, "challenge accepted," and was in front of their doors in about 30 seconds. There was no one waiting and I was pretty shocked; it wasn't until 5:00 on the nose that other people walked up and got in line behind me, most without reservations. So if you're trying to do a walk-up, don't wait until 5:00 to get in line. Get there early. The owner was nice when I told her I didn't have a reservation and she said while all her tables were full, she had bar seating open if I was interested. I said yes, so I was seated in the Hannya Room (and happened to be wearing my Yakuza Majima sukajan with a hannya on the back) with a handful of other people (bar seating is very limited, maybe 12 seats tops, and the room is very narrow). The bartender was cool and offered to take our phones and take photos of the specials on the wall in the foyer so we all didn't have to walk back over there. I actually ended up getting one of the specials, the chicken katsu cutlet with beef curry. From the regular menu, I got a yaki onigiri and some gyoza (which are described as grandma's recipe and handmade), and from the bar I ordered the reggae punch cocktail (Iichiko saiten shochu, peach schnapps, and cold brew oolong tea). The regular menu is extensive, with a lot of comfort dishes and signature dishes I haven't seen elsewhere. Whether you want meat or seafood, there's something for everyone here. The meal was absolutely delicious. The only thing I didn't care for, unfortunately, was the yaki onigiri, because I felt the shoyu they used was just way too sweet. Yaki onigiri is one of my most favorite things on the planet, and Ippuku in Berkeley makes them perfectly. I was expecting the one at Maneki to be on that level, but I was disappointed. But other than that, the curry had great flavor and bit of a kick of heat, and wasn't skimpy on the beef. Lots of potato, too. The katsu was breaded and fried perfectly and the cutlet was pretty generously sized. The gyoza were great, not oily, each one stuffed with meat. I enjoyed the reggae punch and would order it again. I also ordered a glass of iced oolong, so I was feeling pretty refreshed on this warm afternoon with my two drinks. The bartender, who was handling both drinks and food service, was a nice guy with a good sense of humor. The owner also chatted with me on my way out and gave me a little history about why they decided to name the bar the Hannya Room, and some background on all the hannya masks on the wall in the bar. I'd love to come back here the next time I'm in Seattle, but especially to be able to dine in one of the tatami rooms. This was a great meal and it was awesome being able to support this important part of the local history of Seattle's Japantown.
