People at SJSU always claim Nirvana Soul as the best go to place for coffee. I was always curious since I always pass by on my way to campus and just tried it one day. I ordered the Honey lavender with extra honey, the worker in the tiny space was very kind and agreed to my request. Very very delicious and she even detailed it for me as well. I would 100% come back.

When I tell you that I went here a lot in my 4 day stay at the Signia San Jose, just trust me. This place is soooo delicious. I am a tea lover and the Lover's Quarrel was the best thing I had. Not the only thing, but I never find unique drinks that are warm and tea based. Not only did it warm my body on the rainy days, it warmed my soul. Walking in, it is a funky and positive vibe. From rainbows to quotes like "I can do hard things," this place started off my day just right. All of the employees were soo nice and patient. Even the regulars in there were nice and helpful. I mean, the love coming out of here was so apparent. The food was so good too. The chorizo cheddar waffle was unique and pretty good. Egg bites? Delish. Quiche? Swoon... If you are looking for a welcoming place with drinks to start your day off right, don't skip Nirvana. My only complaint is that there isn't one by me in Long Beach.

And Café We Go Small satellite location, located inside the historic Hotel DeAnza, to the popular locally-owned coffee roaster and purveyor. This is Nirvana's third location--with a fourth one on the way inside the MLK, Jr. Library that's being constructed as I write this. It's also worth noting they're SJ's first black-owned coffee shop. The Good: *Entrance inside the hotel and from the outside (located along Notre Dame Ave). *Decent selection of lattes and coffee, including cold brew *Waffles, oatmeal, and a few other assorted breakfast items. *Friendly service The Meh: *Not as big of a selection of lattes and food as the S 1st St, but plenty good enough. *No space for dining in or outside *Metered street parking only (M - Sat 0900 - 1800) The Ugly: *Tiny spot that can barely accommodate more than a few people at a time inside. Conclusion: Nice hidden spot to grab a cup of Joe if you're staying at the hotel or need some place that won't be too busy during the morning rush.

Tried Nirvana Soul Coffee Express on a Sunday morning and loved it! The Banana Chai Latte was delicious -- a perfect blend of flavors. The service was super friendly and impressively quick. Will definitely be back!

The banana cream felt lacking as well. Even after mixing the cream top with the matcha, it felt unsatisfying and not enough banana flavor. Each drink is hand-whisked, so well worth the wait. Their cold foams were delicious and super flavorful as well. I was so excited to try the mango sticky rice matcha, as I hadn't seen this flavor anywhere else. The drink has a creamy salted coconut milk cold foam on top and some mango puree and glutinous rice on the bottom. Once everything was mixed, the mango flavor does get lost unfortunately. But still, the drink was amazing and rich. The guava li-hing matcha was sooo vibrant! I loved how the tropical flavor of the guava cold foam sprinkled with li-hing balanced out the earthy matcha. I've tried other guava matchas with guava puree on the bottom rather than cold foam on top, but I definitely prefer the latter to preserve the matcha flavor. The employees were kind and we came on a weekday afternoon with a short wait. Order at a kiosk. Limited seating inside. I wouldn't say this is an ideal study spot, but it is very aesthetic and bright. Parking was not a problem since this location is in a plaza.

There was a mix of people studying, working, and chatting with friends; it's a very lively community spot. Despite how chaotic it was, the space was generally clean and the service was great. The cashier made sure to get our names and address us by them. The decor is beautiful, feeling intentionally designed. I thought it was really cool that they have a slow coffee bar area specifically for pour overs (I think) where tech isn't allowed, so people are just supposed to sit and enjoy their coffee. I've never seen that before in a coffee shop. The menu is extensive. Since it was later in the day, the baked goods were half off, which was a nice surprise. I got a blueberry latte and an Asian fusion focaccia bread. Blueberry latte - I liked this! The blueberry flavor was subtle and not overly sweet or artificial tasting. It added a light fruity note to the coffee without overpowering it. Fusion focaccia bread - This was tasty, but I felt the original price was steep ($12). My piece was around 6" x 3". The shiitake mushroom flavor was strong and I loved the addition of scallions and Chinese sausage sprinkled throughout the bread. Overall, this is such a cool addition to coffee culture in the South Bay. It feels like shop from a big city like SF, NYC, or Chicago instead of little ol' SJ. Parking is close, but you will need to pay after 90 minutes (which can get pricey if you plant there). I want to call out that the decor of Playbook has not changed much from that of Voyager's resident there. The only big difference is the vinyl that you get your drinks out of (which is a small change). When you get to Playback, there is a kiosk located near the front entry to order drinks. While this is convenient and typical for drink places, I do think it removes the homey feel to cafes that you get when you can interact with their baristas, and the layer of community is a bit disconnected. While I was there, I ordered the Teddy Graham latte to try out since it seemed like one of their staple drinks when I did my research. The drink itself was good, toasted, with a nice subtle graham flavor. I would say though for $9 per drink, it was overpriced. Overall, to be honest, this is a good area to work, and study with friends, I would come back here for this alone. I would think of the extra drink cost as work from home fee/tax. :)
