We needed fast breakfast and a pick me up for the last day of Fanime, which is the Memorial Day Monday, so a lot of other businesses were not open or were not open that early yet, but we saw Voltaire Coffee Roasters on our way to the con. They had some Fanime specials for the con (katsu and egg salad sandwiches, spam musubi), seasonal drinks, of course coffees and teas, and non caffeinated drinks, as well as some food too (heated up pastries, both sweet and savory). There's a restroom with a code and a couple seats and tables with outlets to charge your devices. Service was welcoming and efficient especially after the crowds started to pick up. I got the: 1) Egg Salad Sando: -You can tell these were handmade in store. They had cute washi tape to hold the packaging together. -Solid egg salad sandwich. Slightly sweet white bread and generous amount of egg salad inside the sandwich. Creamy mayo taste that isn't too sour or tart, lots of egg in it. Perfect for an anime con next door. 2) Cappuccino: -I got this no sugar and sugar free and it came out with some pretty latte art. I thought it was mostly ok and boyfriend thought so too, but after several sips and when it was too late since we really had to get to the con, it just became too disgustingly sweet for him and he had to throw it away. 3) Yuzu Fresh Fruit Sparkler: -Yuzu puree with sparkling soda water. -Refreshing and not bad, but even after mixing this was a bit sweeter than what I would have liked and again, in our rush to leave, we couldn't really get this adjusted. I ended up pouring most of it in a water bottle to enjoy later and put in my bag. But ended up not finishing it in the end. Maybe next year I'll try again or just stick to the food stuffs. read more

We were staying at a hotel nearby and were looking for coffee shops within walking distance. This one looked promising so we walked over and found ourselves in this very cute cafe. The team here was nice and we ordered a flat white and an iced Chai. The drinks didn't take too long to come out and we ended up sitting outside for a bit so we could sip on our drinks. My husband's Chai was a bit too milky, reading other reviews it seems like we should have ordered it extra strong so we'd have a bit more spice. He finished it quickly and ended up asking me if I could look up a new spot that might have a better Chai. My flat white was good, and I sipped it slower before we ventured off to our second coffee shop of the morning. Definitely a cute little cafe, but it's worth asking extra questions about their items to make sure you're ordering right for your tastes. For lovers of spicy Chai, ask for extra spice here. read more

They are serving The Best coffee in down town San Jose! It has been a while that I got a copy from them as I hardly ever go to downtown San Jose. This is an excellent coffee shop that's getting everything right! The small cafe is located in Downtown San Jose. When we walked in, we were immediately given a warm greeting. They had a beautiful display case of baked treats and we ordered the ham and cheese croissants. They have a small toaster oven and are able to warm them up. The croissant was really good! So buttery with a nice gritty mustard inside. For a drink, I ordered my usual matcha and was pleased to see them using a chasen to prepare the powder. It was very well made! Only adding sweetener if you'd like. The matcha powder shines. They had some seating available so it was easy to enjoy before jumping on the road. Of all the coffee shops in the area, this place felt like the one that was making craft coffee and drinks. You know how coffee shops seem to either be focused on the sugary drinks and aesthetic or they're purists focused on drinks without the extra stuff. This is the later. read more

They play slow, smooth jazz music in the background that helps me reset from the busy atmosphere outside. I come here mainly for the pour over coffee. Not a lot of places do a pour over, so this place is special to me. This morning I felt like I needed a nice, toasty medium roast to wake me up. I ordered their Brazil, which has a nice nutty taste. And, while they have good options such as bagels, and avocado toast, I was drawn to a slice of Quiche Lorraine. Though I am far from a quiche expert, I was very happy with the one I had here. The crust was flakey, buttery, and had its crunch intact (even warmed up). The insides filled the bill, too. Got my eggs, bacon etc delivered in a very tasty way. Cinnamon is optional upon order and part of the original recipe! I wanted to try something more authentic and true to form. My friend is lactose intolerant, so he opted to purchase the strawberry sparkler made with in-house puree. I really enjoyed the Spanish latte. It's sweet and not commonly offered, at least at the cafes I frequent! This is definitely a hit and is relatively easy to make. We needed some coffee and we love going to quaint coffee shops and trying new things. I ordered a Spanish latte which had condensed milk in it; plus reduced the sweetness, and it was very tasty. The regular sized drinks are kind of small. We also ordered a Americano and it was pretty good. Service was fine. Liked the coffee so much we took home the espresso beans. There's a parking structure right across the street if there isn't parking available. There were people taking up spots for awhile working, but there were a few tables available. I got the Casia latte (lavender + earl grey + espresso). I enjoyed the aromatic tea flavors with the burst of caffeine in it. Friend got the nutella latte, reminded her of a yummy mocha. Chill ambience, good service, reasonable prices, and tasty coffee. I swung by on a random weekday morning and this place was pleasantly busy with meetups or people trying to work/study. The line moved along super quickly, and the baristas were incredibly friendly. We are on a mission to find some nice coffee shops to sit and do work on the weekend, and Voltaire came up on our social media. We came here around noon on a Saturday, and were served very quickly, and the staff was super friendly. We both got lattes, they were really good, and there was plenty of space to sit. I got a salmon toast and it was good, but I wish there was more lox. We also got a breakfast wrap, the flavor was good but nothing to write home about. We sat in the little corner booth which was so adorable, and were able to relax and do some work. Overall it was nice, but since the doors were open it was a little warm and some flies were flying in. Highlights are the staff and coffee. This quaint coffee shop is the perfect study spot!! There's lots of seating inside, outlets, and free wifi. Parking is not bad, there's 2-3 spots of 2 hour parking in the front but also more street parking spots on the street to the right of the shop. If you're planning to stay a long time (6 hours+) I would recommend to park at the lot right across with a $10 flat rate. I loved the interior decoration and the barista was very friendly and welcoming! I got the matcha latte with honey and was a little bland, next time, I'll ask for them to make it a bit more creamy and sweet. They give it to you at the most perfect, sippable temperature immediately, for instant enjoyment. The counter is in the middle I ordered a Mexican mocha and my husband ordered a Nutella latte. I used the bathroom and it was very clean that's always a plus. This small cafe tucked downtown really impressed me with their coffee! I was in the area getting brunch and thought I would pop in to do some work with the remaining time I had on parking. Nutella Latte ($6): so good! The barista told me Nutella is surprisingly not as sweet as you think, so I went with the hot Nutella latte with whole milk, no adjustments. Came out very pretty, good espresso and rich mocha flavor. Sweetness was just right. They have pretty big cups so very reasonably priced too. I think their hot drinks are better than their iced, but maybe just from the specific things I've tried. 5/5 Seating: quite a good amount of seating for a small cafe. There are individual tables and seating at the window area with barstools. I loved that there were plenty of outlets! Service: nice and very quick--lots of downtown employees come through for a quick afternoon pick-me-up, but drinks come out efficiently despite a line Parking: difficult as expected for downtown SJ parking. There's a free 90 minute lot nearby if you don't mind some walking, otherwise it's going to be metered street and you can only pay/park maximum 2 hours before you move to a new spot and pay again. Weekend is free, but I would not want to come downtown on a weekend if you don't like crowds or traffic. Overall, I think Voltaire Coffee Roasters is one of the better cafes downtown. There's strong competition in the area, but I would definitely come here again to try the rest of the menu. read more
