Came here with a friend in the late afternoon to catch up 2 hours before closing. The store was PACKED. There was a mix of people studying, working, and chatting with friends; it's a very lively community spot. Despite how chaotic it was, the space was generally clean and the service was great. The cashier made sure to get our names and address us by them. The decor is beautiful, feeling intentionally designed. I thought it was really cool that they have a slow coffee bar area specifically for pour overs (I think) where tech isn't allowed, so people are just supposed to sit and enjoy their coffee. I've never seen that before in a coffee shop. The menu is extensive. Since it was later in the day, the baked goods were half off, which was a nice surprise. I got a blueberry latte and an Asian fusion focaccia bread. Blueberry latte - I liked this! The blueberry flavor was subtle and not overly sweet or artificial tasting. It added a light fruity note to the coffee without overpowering it. Fusion focaccia bread - This was tasty, but I felt the original price was steep ($12). My piece was around 6" x 3". The shiitake mushroom flavor was strong and I loved the addition of scallions and Chinese sausage sprinkled throughout the bread. Overall, this is such a cool addition to coffee culture in the South Bay. It feels like shop from a big city like SF, NYC, or Chicago instead of little ol' SJ. The coffee here is wow amazing. They seem to specialize in pour over and have a sample station set up so you can try the coffee before committing. I had one that tasted like peach gummy rings, not something you'd expect from coffee. Service was wonderful. Although there was a line when I came, it moved quickly. We also tried the food. My daughter treated me to coffee and snacks here this morning and it was great! I am normally a "burnt offerings" kind of coffee guy (think, Peet's dark roast) but I have to admit there is merit to being able to taste subtlety in your drink and that is what this place is all about. We had pour overs (speedy), a banana toast with black sesame spread under the bananas, and a Japanese croissant-like pastry called a "shioko-pan". Pastries were great! They have a large selection. We thought both of our choices were excellent. The selection of pour overs changes all the time. It is like wine tasting - they give you a lot of descriptions and there is a pre-purchase decision tasting station that has small paper cups and small pitchers of sample coffee to help you figure out what you want. In addition, they have more normally priced espresso drinks, including Americano, that span the gamut of froth, milk, no-milk, etc. Real barista stuff, including artwork. I am lactose intolerant, so we went with the pour overs The pour over selections were complex in flavor. They are more lightly roasted and carefully brewed than I am used to. Lots of fruity notes and other things happening. I would write more about my selection, but since they turn them over all the time, you will just need to evaluate what is happening that day. They have complete information on sourcing, tasting notes, etc. All really top shelf as an experience. In fact, if you are out just looking for a caffeine and bounce, this is not the place for that. It's really a nice place to just chat and sip. They have some noise treatments on the walls and ceiling to keep it from being crazy noisy. It's not the library, but you can carry on a conversation, which is a nice change. So, our outing probably cost as much as lunch somewhere but it was really fun. The barista who did the pour over was super precise and answered by questions about what he was doing. You should see the ritual - it's all got purpose. This is one review I've been hesitant to write for a very selfish reason. I've finally gotten over my greedy desire to gatekeep this place. Everyone already knows Moonwake is a great coffee shop, the lines in the morning, especially on the weekends, are clear evidence of this. Even some regulars affectionally call it "Moon Wait" because of the queues. But this place and, more importantly, the people who work here, deserved to be recognized. Moonwake is a bright spot for some great dark coffee! There, I said it. The place is welcoming and has a great vibe. Sometimes you just know when a place feels right. Whether it's the plants all over the shop, the friendly staff dedicated to their craft, the comfortable interior, the amazing pastries (I highly recommend the shoi pan, or salt roll, and the mushroom tart), the bright airy atmosphere, the attentive and inviting pour-over bar, or the great playlists, this place is something special. What a beautiful cafe in an unassuming strip mall, behind a fabric shop. The cafe is bright and airy with live plants everywhere and a beautiful tree taking center stage. The view of the roastery and collection of tea cups adds to the ambience. At my first visit, I asked the staff for recommendations and they did not disappoint. I ordered a plain latte and I really enjoyed the fragrance and flavor: not too bitter and well balanced by the milk. I really enjoyed coming to Moonwake Coffee Roasters. Although the line was long the baristas were super speedy we got our drinks so fast and the cashier was also great at providing recommendations and telling us the details of the items we asked about. The inside was very modern with a cement circle in the middle and a baby tree in the middle which is a vibe. You can also see where they roast the beans too which is pretty cool. We ordered for a group the cryo-cortado, espresso tonic, marzipan latte with oat milk, vanilla with oat milk, and cardamom orange latte. I took a sip of each hehe. My favorite was the espresso tonic as it was very refreshing and I got slightly fruity vibes which I really enjoy. The cryo-cortado was very interesting it was extremely creamy and coated the tongue was a little salty. The lattes were good and nothing super crazy imo my least favorite was the marzipan one I think I'm just not an almond syrup fan. For a snack we got the black sesame banana toast heated up and it was phenomenal, I'd highly recommend trying it. Already one of my two favorite slow bar experiences in the Bay Area! Staff was amazing and their whole shop is a tribute to speciality coffee. They have a wall of drippers and even roast their own beans. I tried their Sidra and Batian coffees. I would say they're light roast and fruity/balanced coffees. Our drinks were ready within 10 minutes or so. * Egg salad sandwich - pretty small serving for the price tag. Egg salad is heavy on the mayo so its quite creamy and rich. The bread is soft and pillowy. The fish roe on top is unique touch and adds a briny finish to the palate. * Pumpkin squash latte - This was a unique approach to the beloved PSL. The pumpkin spice flavor was strong yet not overwhelming. The latte itself was creamy and slightly sweet. This drink was quite comforting on a rainy weekend afternoon. * Tiramisu- Probably one of the best tiramisus I've had in a while. The ladyfingers were perfectly saturated in the espresso essence without being soggy. The mascarpone cream was light and complemented the ladyfingers well. * matcha latte hot- This was one of the worst matcha lattes I've ever had. The matcha tasted poor in quality and quite bland. The drinks quickly arrived after ordering, which was impressive given the line. The baristas clearly knew what they were doing, and the latte art was stunning. I tried the cardamom orange latte, and both the cardamom and orange flavors were extremely faint. It was a solid latte but nothing exceptional (minus the pretty latte art). My friend tried a pour-over coffee that he really enjoyed, which was supposed to have notes of honeysuckle and kumquat? I didn't particularly enjoy it nor did I taste the honeysuckle/kumquat, but I'm also not a coffee enthusiast. I was excited to try the miso browned butter pumpkin bread. As a lead parent for my child's grade, we host monthly coffee chats for parents to come together and connect. While most grade levels tend to go to a Starbucks, which is fine, I wanted something different and unique. A friend suggested Moonwake, and at my next personal friend coffee date, I decided to make this establishment our spot so I could scout it out. And let me tell you, it was love at first sight, we knew we had to make this our parent meetup spot for the academic year. The ambiance felt very cozy and welcoming, there's even a raised seating tree well with small trees, which is something I've not seen in a coffee shop before. There's lots of tables of various sizes, and in the back there's also a long bar-stool height table that easily houses 15+ people. I tend to come a little earlier at opening to try and grab a third or half of the table before our crowd comes. The menu has quite the assortment, many of them asian inspired. They have both delicious food (the egg salad sando with fish roe on top is A+) along with the drinks. I try something new every time, and nothing has disappointed yet. The staff are super friendly and accommodating. They were so patient as I ask questions or let me decide what to choose for the day. The clientele have also all been quite pleasant and accommodating, and sometimes we have a polite and friendly chat to pass the time. Overall, we've been so happy with our choice of locale to host our group regularly - parents often tell me how delicious and tasty it is, and we have built a much stronger community, with Moonwake as our foundation. If you arrive after 9:30, be prepared to sit outside. I had the mocha with oat milk and my friend had the iced matcha and egg sando with caviar. At over $7 per drink, I wasn't super impressed. This is my favorite coffee shop in the South Bay right now. I came here earlier this morning and enjoyed everything this place has to offer. I like the ambiance with the natural plants everywhere, simple and modern furniture, and the overall design of the coffee shop is just on point. This has become my favorite cafe and my go-to. All the baristas are incredibly busy but always so nice and patient with all of the patrons. If you want to rush in and out and chug your coffee, then this place isnt necessarily for you. But if you want to slow down and enjoy something really good made with care by people who really care about the product, quality and taste, then you have to try Moonwake. The quality of everything I've had here is top notch and now they have in-house pastries that are mind blowing good. My favorite are the LBG (radish cake) foccacia with chinese sausage, mushroom and green onion and their take on a cardamom bun. My biggest complaint about cardamom treats here is that they are generally too sweet and not cardamom enough for me. This is likely the best Ive had, not too sweet slightly crispy and very cardamom-y in the best way possible. I think their in-house baked goods are currently available only from Thur-Sunday, so check first to avoid disappointment. But I love that their constantly expanding the menu.
