I ordered Barya for my birthday party and was very impressed! I loved the Filipino fusion take on many of my favorite dishes, including the oxtail lumpia and peanut butter dipping sauce! That was a crowd favorite and gone by the end of the night, I will say that sauce in particular should he swerved warm but it was honestly fine cold. It was easy using their website to send in inquire for the catering event. It's important to be detailed on what you want, where the location willl be and how many people you plan to have. Day of the event chef rod was texting me asking me a couple follow up questions to ensure food came correctly! He came on time and had everything ready to go. The first time, I ordered the turon. I saw the other reviews that said the sauce was amazing so I asked for another container of it, but Selena said "NO" rudely. It was in a tiny container. It turned out I didn't like the sauce because it tasted like vinegar. I really liked the turon, though. The second time I ordered it the following week, all I said was "the sauce with the turon..." and Selena interrupted me saying "ONLY ONE OF THEM." I asked her if they make it with vinegar and she said "NO", but when I asked what was in the sauce, her partner said it WAS with vinegar. So, not the best customer service. The horchata was just OK. This review is specifically for the ube black sesame horchata. It contains coconut condensed milk and oat milk. It was very strong on the sesame, which I unfortunately felt overrode the ube flavor, since ube tends to be a bit weaker on its own. I wish the ube flavor were stronger. But if you really like sesame, then you may enjoy this. They gave a paper straw, and I really appreciate the environmental sustainability but unfortunately the straw got too bent to be usable before I got to the end of the drink. read more

While waiting for my Kona coffee and crêpe, I was thinking I should get a little snack at this unique looking Filipino food truck. My co-teacher got some lumpia so I figured I would get an order of Turon. I honestly haven't had any since that one spot on East side shut down post pandemic. The order was $9 for 2 pieces of Turon, with a sauce, which was fine since I was thinking how big the pieces were from the East side spot. Lol when my order was ready, it was nice warm and crispy and smelled delicious! I was just kind of sad to see them as little snack sizes and it looked as if they cut the Saba Banana into eighths if not, quarter sizes. Hee. Fancy cutting? My co-teacher said that the lumpia was OK but nothing she couldn't make at home. Especially since she's Filipino. The Turon was good, but very small in size and the dipping sauce had a really good flavor! I wouldn't mind trying some other things on their menu, but I wish their Turon would have been bigger and maybe added some jackfruit inside..... since that's what I'm used to with that delicious banana caramel sauce. The ambience was fine, I had to ask a valet driver where I could park since their location is out in front of a hospital and there's no real parking area since it's the pick up section of the hospital. Masarap! First time at the Barya Kitchen food truck last Friday for the Mexipino event at the flea market and we absolutely loved it. The line was never ending all night and we stood for about 30 minutes, totally worth the wait! Once we actually ordered the wait time for the food was pretty fast maybe 10 minutes at most. Food was piping hot, fresh and flavorful. Exactly what we were looking for at the night market . We ordered the combination plate: bistek and sisig, one of their specials the white adobo carnitas taco and the ube black sesame horchata. Everything was a solid 10/10. I've had ube horchata before, but never this good before, we think the black sesame added an extra layer of deliciousness to the drink. The meats: unctuous, tender, a flavor bomb. Everything complimented each other, I loved the crispness of the atchara. Also adored the way the shanghai lumpia was wrapped, so cute! The perfect bite. Service noticeably inefficient, the order line moved much slower than the lines at other food trucks and eateries at the event. Luckily, the food was delicious. Ordered the combination rice bowl serving some of my faves--beef bistek, pork sisig, and lumpia. The lumpia was nice and crunchy, filled with tasty ingredients, and the bistek and sisig were cooked nicely and had good flavor. Only issue was the bistek was chopped similarly to the sisig. Finally got to try them this past October at the Filipino & Mexican American Heritage month Oasis Makers Fair at the Tetra Hotel in Sunnyvale. I totally forgot last time. They'll hand you a buzzer to let you know when it's time to collect the goods at the right window. Customer service has always been courteous and efficient. Food comes out pretty quickly when there's no line. Expect a wait when it's busy of course. The sisig is a bit too fatty for my taste but I love the bistek! Chopped tender beef with a pan fried exterior served with hot steamed rice, sautéed onions, green onions, pickled red cabbage, and a lime wedge. Don't forget the crispy lumpia! Tried this food truck at an event in Sunnyvale. I had to wait like 20 minutes in line and maybe another 10 for my food to come out. Honestly, I probably wouldn't wait that long for the food again. I had the pork sisig rice bowl. It was $20 and they politely ask that you pay in cash, zelle or venmo, vs a credit card, which they will charge a fee for. I thought the bowl was just aright. It was a bit oily. But had good flavor. It was a decent sized portion, and I think I had some pork belly left over. It's served with pickled cabbage and onions and a lime. It was a very warm afternoon so I was grateful for the large canopy to stand under while I made up my mind on what to order. The menu is small and many items were sold out by the time I arrived. Opted for the Shanghai, lumpia and Turon. Customer service was good as I was greeted with a smile by both of the owners who work the truck. LUMPIA - 5 pieces for $14 These were tasty although pretty skinny and cooked to order so they were nice and hot. TURON - 2 pieces for $9. These were really good. I love banana desserts so I enjoyed these. Both items came with one itty bitty teeny tiny dippy sauce each. Would ask for more if I come back again. These were both tasty but way too expensive in my opinion. Over $25 for two very small appetizer items was a little shocking. Tried the Birria Lumpias with consomme and the Pork Sisig. The Pork Sisig tasted more like dry version pork belly adobo. It was good but didn't have the sisig flavor which is usually a hint of sourness from lemon or mayo and a light spicy kick from jalapeno. Could not taste the Jack cheese from the lumpia filling. Meat was pretty muted that I could taste more of the wrapper. They were crispy. Some of the Lumpias had hollow sections, no meat filling. Consomme was good. Pretty pricey. Even during the summer events when it is hot as balls (& I know the inside of the truck is significantly hotter), I see them hustling to get those orders out. There is a reason they always have a line & sell out early on. My go-to order is the pork sisig rice bowl. For $20, you get a good amount of food that'll fill you up! I love the blend of flavors (the more vinegary, the better in my opinion) with the combination of rice (2 scoops) & side of pickled veggies. Their lumpia is also a great option for a snack. You can definitely tell that they make everything by hand & they're not skimping out by selling those frozen grocery store ones. The last time I had food from Barya Kitchen was before Covid when they were at Camino Brewing. At that time, I remember getting the sisig, the inihaw, and the oxtail lumpia. Everything, especially the oxtail lumpia, was fantastic. At that time, they seemed to be a very "under-the-rader" food truck, meaning they were only appearing every once in a while, which disappointed me as I really liked their food. The most recent time I had food from them (and the basis for this review) was when they were at the Taylor Street Market. I did a quick Instagram search and it seems like they have a more "regular" food truck schedule compared to pre-Covid. It also seems like they have done a complete revamp of their menu. They seem to now have a Filipino-Mexican fusion menu. I got the quessabirria tacos, the birria lumpia, and the bistec bowl. Let me start off by saying that if you get the tacos, you don't need to get the lumpia and vice-versa. They are basically the same thing and both are delicious. Both use pork adobo as the filling, which is what makes them rather unique. The bistec was honestly just fine. It wasn't the best I've ever had. I would probably have still given this place five stars except the total cost of my food was $60. I definitely think this truck serves better than average Filipino food but it was still a little hard to justify such a high price point for only three dishes even with something special like the lumpia. Overall, I don't think this new menu is bad but I definitely think I had a more "five-star experience" with the old menu. The owners here definitely have a "creative gene" so I'm hoping they will continue to change the menu every once in a while. read more

I tried a variety of items from Barya Kitchen at the Philippines Independence Day event at District Six and all the food we ordered was SO delicious! We ordered the lumpia shanghai, birria lumpia, pork sisig taco and bistek taco. Both kinds of lumpia were really good! I had never had a birria fusion lumpia and, wow, it was so good dipped in the consume they served it with. The tacos were good but I definitely preferred the pork sisig taco over the bistek. I did want to try a rice bowl so I was sad to see they ran out early on in the event but that means I'll have to try it next time I see the truck. I hired Barya Kitchen to cater a family event. Amazing food! My guests had never really tried Filipino food and they loved it. Highest compliment was that we had a bunch of 3-6 year olds who kept coming back for multiple rounds of chicken inihaw and bistek. Even the pickiest eaters didn't stand a chance when served Chef Rod's creations. My personal favourite however will always be the oxtail lumpia. I'm always a fan of places that try to bring Filipino food into the mainstream... beyond "pika pika" style deli joints. So when I heard Barya Kitchen, a pop-up that does modern Filipino fusion cuisine, had an "Ode to Jolibee" event at Camino Brewing on March 14th, I thought I'd check it out with my partner. While I can't deny the food was great... the execution of this event was terrible. First off, the event was suppose to happen from 12-7 pm; there was no option to pre-order, so you either had to order take out onsite or order onsite to dine in. My partner and I got there at 12:45 pm and they were already out of their one desert item - the peach mango pie. What the hell - how do you run out that early?! It only went downhill from there... we placed our orders, and waited. And waited... and waited. I noticed other people had been waiting awhile for their food as well, so it wasn't like they had forgotten their order. They were simply... backed up. My partner would go up to check on them, and they would just apologize stating that they were backed up and only had 2 people. During a trip to the bathroom, we overhead them asking someone to run out to get rice. I can understand during COVID, times are tough and staffing has to be limited... but this was such poor planning on Barya Kitchen's part. They also had to balance take out orders, so I'm not even sure how long those guys were waiting. Had they taken pre-orders, they could have anticipated the demand and planned better... I wouldn't have had to wait 1.5 hours for food. That's how long I expected to be there for, even for a pop-up. They were clearly overwhelmed and whoever runs the operation needs to do a better job. I have to praise the staff at Camino Brewing - Barya Kitchen operates separately from the brewery, but the staff kept us pre-occupied with great tasting beer (and I normally don't like beer; see my other review for Camino Brewery) and even gave us a discount on our tab at the end of our visit. They really didn't have to since the fault was on Barya Kitchen's part... but honestly if it wasn't for their great service and beer, I may have rated my experience even worse than 3-stars. When our food finally came (1.5 hours later)... we were practically starving, but luckily the food was served hot and tasty. We ordered pretty much 1 of everything available at the time we ordered: - Fried Chicken and Rice w/ Mushroom Gravy: We actually ordered 1 for each person, which was good foresight since I was so hungry I didn't want to share. The chicken was good - the meat was moist/tender, and the skin was crispy. Was it better than Jolibee's fried chicken? I can't be sure since I was STARVING so it tasted amazing at the time, but they definitely nailed that satisfying savory-ness Jolibee chicken has. I especially liked the eating it with the mushroom gravy - in fact it tasted amazing poured onto my rice, which had been topped with fried garlic. - Impossible Burger Steak w/ Mushroom Gravy: I'm actually not a fan of the original dish at Jolibee, but this was very good! Light and moist, and it was quite flavorful... especially with that bomb mushroom gravy. - Filipino Sweet-Style Macaroni: This was basically Filpino style sweet spaghetti with ground beef and hot dogs (I think they used smoke franks?), and instead they used macaroni pasta. The sauce was great and true to Jolibee / Filipino roots... my only issue is I don't think the macaroni pasta held the sauce as well as spaghetti or a long noodle would have done. Otherwise it was nice that the sweetness wasn't too overbearing. I'm so happy we ordered a lot of food up-front... because a lot of things ran out during that 1.5 hour, so we wouldn't have been able to top-off given how hungry we were. The only thing left to purchase was the macaroni pasta. Keep in mind, by time we got our food it was already a little past 2 pm and they were suppose to be serving until 7 pm (or sold out). Usually I've seen pop-ups run out in the last 2-3 hours, but to be out of stuff so early in the day... there was some really poor planning. Overall... solid food, terrible execution on a great concept... I think a 3 is fair. Hopefully they can do better in the future on planning, meeting demand, and getting orders completed, because my first visit did not hold a great first impression. It frustrates me when I have to rate a place down on service/execution... but a 1.5 hour wait for food is not something to overlook. Please do better Barya Kitchen! read more

The adobo chicken wings were crispy, thiccc, with a slight tangy umami flavor from the sauce. Went to an event where this truck was the only one there. Unfortunately, it was clear they were not built for events. They had exactly 2 buzzers for orders, so every 2 people they would stop taking orders. During these long (10min) pauses I had time to hear them interact with other customers and they were short and a bit rude. My interaction with them was similar: "you have to wait", "what do you want". The food though was excellent. The sisig, lumpia..etc were fantastic. You can tell how much care they put into the food. Can we just taco bout how delicious these tacos look? Originally hailing at Camino Brewery, Barya Kitchen is now located at Ludwig in dtsj! Right now they're focusing on Tacos Delano, which is their Filipino and Mexican fusion concept that brings the best of both worlds!! We tried out their whole menu which includes their oxtail birria lumpia, birria taco combo, braised beef quesotaco, bistek asada street taco, bistek asada quesotaco, and their mango pineapple aqua fresca. You know the food is bomb when you demolish everything on the menu LOL. My girlfriend and I seriously loved the oxtail birria lumpia and quesatacos! They do NOT skimp on the cheese here, every bite was so gooey and cheesy--it was such a guilty pleasure come true. The pandan avocado crema sauce on the bistek asada street taco is also so unique and delicious with the steak meat. Everything was just awesome and this was one of the best taco dinners we've had in a while! I found out about Barya Kitchen from Camino Brewing and I absolutely love them! I'm so sad to see that they only have 2.5 stars on Yelp. Although I do see where the other reviews are coming from, here are some of the reasons why I justify coming back every time: - I know it's run by a small team and they're getting really popular! I've missed a few items because they sell out so quickly, but I'm just happy to see that they're getting business during a difficult time like right now. - I love their modern twist/fusion style and they're so innovative with their food! I can't wait to see their future collaborations as well. - I've been able to try their oxtail birria tacos and lumpia, lechon kawali, and the special Ode to Jollibee menu. Barya serves the most perfect lumpia, every bite is so balanced with just the right amount of filling and crunch on the wrapper.
